Matt James, a standout junior offensive tackle for reigning Ohio Division I champion St. Xavier, said he is trying to avoid the temptation to get bigger.
At 6-7 and 285 pounds, James is a big man. Scholarship offers already have arrived from the likes of Ohio State, Michigan and Tennessee.
?No one has really talked to me about gaining weight, but I would assume they would probably want me to gain some,? James said.
James guesses 310 would be his playing weight in college.
?That way I?d still be able to move,? he said. ?I know I?m probably bigger and stronger than most kids I see in high school, but that will change in college. I?ll have to make sure I?m still as fast as everyone.?
James missed the first two games this season because of a foot ailment. He said his weight did not help cause the problem, but St..X trainer Mike Gordon said the Bombers? medical staff still advised James to think about trimming some weight for good measure.
?We were trying to work on some weight loss for him to be able to function without pain,? Gordon said. ?He?s a kid who?s not overweight, he?s just big. We feel if our kids eat healthy and it?s under our guidance, they?ll be OK.?
