'10 MI DE/TE William Gholston (Michigan State signee)

Bill Kurelic: QB Chandler Whitmer is attempting to help persuade other elite prospects to join him in Illinois - ESPN

OSU-MSU battling for Gholston?

Nobody passed the "look test" better than ESPNU 150 Watch List defensive end William Gholston. During a break in the action, Gholston said USC, Ohio State, Michigan State, Alabama, Tennessee and Florida were schools prominent on his list. However, the talk around Memorial Stadium on Saturday was that Gholston's decision could easily come down to the Buckeyes or Spartans.

There is no doubt that the guy you want to send off the bus first is William Gholston (Detroit/Southeastern). This budding superstar was the most physically impressive man in Champaign on Saturday. He proved to have speed off the edge when lining up at defensive end and often beat the offensive tackle before the opponent could kick back and anchor down.

Why did you guys offer so late? IMO had OSU offered early you would have been tough to beat.

Some programs don't hand out offers like candy in a Halloween parade.
While that is true, it still doesn't explain the late offer. There was a looooooooong delay between offers which didn't make a lot of sense. Especially for Gholston. Hope we still get him.

I'm not sure if offering last september would have kept Gholston from being a Spartan. Can't fault a kid for staying home.

What you dont like candy?:wink2:
When you throw out that much candy, all manners of creatures come swarming to your doorstep. Unless you're desperate for anyone to join your posse, you usually want to be a little more selective.

Lets keep in mind the Bucks offered the LB kid out of Texas before offering WG. They must see specific things on film they are looking for. Also is WG a DE or LB (Leo)? I'm not sure his natural fit is a LB (LEO). I see him more of a DE. I also know he is insistent on playing LB at the next level.

I'm in the boat that thinks we would be in much better standing with Gholston if we would have offered sooner, and I'm not sure why we didn't. I think we stand a good chance if he waits awhile to decide though.

Is there any particular reason why he's not camping at MSU? You'd think he would to help do some recruiting. I'm not doubting that they are his leader, just find that a little bit curious.

Rivals$ (Michigan)--Gholston recaps camp, talks recruiting

William trimmed his list down to Michigan State, USC, Ohio State, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Miami and Michigan. He plans to camp at Ohio State, Florida, Alabama and Tennessee.

I believe it's the same week as the OSU camp, which is a bigger event and better competition (depending on what he's looking for).

I think the offer to Gholston may have a lot to do with the status of Jamel Turner. I was under the impression that these were both LEO/DE/OLB.
Maybe the delay had more to do with Turner's off the field issues and less to do with William Gholston's on the field abilty. Either way, the staff knows who William is, has known for quite a while to be honest, and knows what they want to do with this recruiting year. I'm not going to speculate why they did what they did because it has worked out pretty well in the past. Lets hope they can keep it going with top guys like Gholston! Go Bucks!:osu:
