If this kid is a football player like his dad was, weather like that MIGHT be a good thing.

I really think weather is played up by fans more than it is players.

If weather was a factor at all why would a player from California or Florida ever leave the state?

Weather might not be a factor for kids who grew up in regions with snow and cold, but it is definitely a factor for some. JB SHugarts discussed it in an interview saying how tough it was, and how it can be a difficult transition for southern kids.

The main reason that I think we have a strong chance is because of his father. Sure the relationship between Gene Smith and JT is helping but I think it would be unlikely for Nick to decommit once he has made a decision. tOSU has had a lot of success in getting the interest and JT has always told the kids to make sure they only committed when they were ready.

Long story short I don't see Nick falling in love with multiple programs i.e. Boyd...

If you get him, you're getting a quality prospect. Not someone thats going to jump in and immediately compete for a starting job, but he's a good player without a doubt. Physically similar to Tate Forcier (not as fast IMO), but a playing style more like E.J Manual, a guy that can run but sits back more often than not.

And I'm sure you guys are all over it by now, but ND and Nick never shared the same sort of mutual interest many suspected early on. We liked him, but not enough to put him over other prospects we liked more for our system, and more importantly he wanted to blaze his own trail and step out from the shadow his father casts over that program. Plus it would be wierd playing the same position as his older brother - and passing him too because he is flat out better than Nate. Would make for strange family dinner conversation IMO.

Anywho, I'm guessing somewhere between a high 3 to mid 4 star level prospect to give you guys an idea. Needs to bulk up, and doesn't have towering height, but he's a pretty accomplished passer with some athleticism. I think he'd fit in nicely and help transition once Pryor moves on. A "sneaky good" prospect is how I'd describe him (if thats even possible as a Montana son).

Calves,
It's been opined around these parts Joe Montana doesn't care much for your corpulent head coach.
Can you shed any light on that?

I find it odd that ND hasn't offered considering they are in the market for at least 1 QB and have offered at least 3 all ready.

Nick Montana by all accounts is a legit talent. LSU, OSU, FSU, Stanford offers a year from signing day attest to that. Texas and 'Bama appear on the verge of offering.

Something doesn't smell right in regards to his recuritment by ND.
It could be some combination of Nick telling ND he is not interested (cut his own path, depth chart, Weis) or perhaps ND doesn't think that much of him (but how do explain the early offers to the Golic brothers).

I've heard it when Charlie's "Jersey" routine rubs a recruit the wrong way, and I have yet to hear anything to the affect with Montana.

Honestly, I think it boils down to:

a) Not wanting to compete at the same position as his brother (as in make his brother feel bad once he blows by him on the depth chart).

b) Not wanting to follow in Dad's footsteps.

c) Not having that much interest in the Irish (even back in last fall, I remember hearing that he was fairly fond of USC).

d) Our staff not being that high on him. Weis favors tall guys, and pocket passers more often than not, and he doesn't really fit that bill.

For someone who wasn't very interested in the first place, in spite of a boatload of info on ND at his fingertips (two siblings going there, probably countless family trips to the campus, I'm certain Dad could tell him anything he wants to know, etc), the staff probably came together and said it wasn't worth the chase in the end. Other guys had more interest, and projected as either an equal or better fit for the scheme the Irish run.

Its more compelling to think that there's a conspiracy behind it, but I really think its the little things adding up, hard as that is to accept for many, including a pocket of nostalgic Irish fans that are beside themselves.

EDIT:

As for the Golic brothers, Mike is a project but he is legitimate. His early offer was a combo of wanting momentum, having a need at Oline, and planning on taking two centers so being able to take on a weight room project.

As for Jake? That was pretty much political. With the brother already on scholarship, and Jake getting D1 interest, we pretty much had to follow the precedent we laid with Mike.

Clausen was also a no-brainer offer. There are exceptions to the prototypic QB the Irish go after (Budmayr was 6'1" on a good day), but its usually a tall guy and/or a classic drop back player.

And like I said, there wasn't one smoking gun that KOed the "Montana to ND" bandwagon that so many people assumed would be rolling.

So why have the Irish offered Devin Gardner? He's clearly not the prototypical drop back passer. Are they thinking more ATH then QB?

Back to Montana, I was kind of taken aback by the offer when I first heard, mainly due to the negative comments about him in various places. But after thinking about it, and doing some research, I like the offer. Here's hoping he has a good time in C-Bus and commits soon after.

From sources I trust....not Ohio State ones I might add:

Nick has made it pretty clear (to the Irish staff) that he isn't looking the way of ND at this time....mainly due to his brother being there.
