Game Thread #1 Texas at #2/#3 tOSU, Sat. Aug. 30th, 12pm ET, FOX

I’ve been trying to talk sense into people about Arch since he signed with UT. The most jarring thing to me was that he was in one of the smallest divisions in LA and didn’t dominate. He was quite average and never got past the 2nd round of the playoffs and was blown out every loss. 5star #1 QB hardly ever get blown out the way he did, and have games where he can’t even get 100yds. He’s a solid QB at the HS level, but I honestly wouldn’t even put him at Ewers’ level. And im Sure the high level talent at Texas will bail him out of a lot of situations. But I doubt his arm and legs will lead UT to a title and that’s what they expect from him. He has unimaginable pressure, and he’s a very nice kid and I feel bad for the amount of vitriol he’s going to get this week. And it’s all due to pressure from his last name which he can’t help

I don’t think you meant to do it, but you just described “Sugar” Shane Morris’s HS career.

Sayin obviously didn't light the scoreboard on fire but what he did do is "make the routine plays routinely." He was very accurate on short and intermediate throws, which I think is sort of an underrated skill for quarterbacks in general b/c it doesn't make highlight clips. Arch did not do that at all. He had some brutal misses on throws that just have to be completed at this level.

I’m glad we escaped. I think as the season progresses the offense will open up quite a bit and Sayin will dazzle. That is likely the best defense we will play this season by a decent margin.

I haven’t read this thread yet, but I have re-watched the game.

The ‘Shoe was rocking, it was great to experience the constant yelling on every Texas snap. The student section in the end zone was more engaged than I’ve seen in quite a while. My voice is shot.

Enjoyed the Skull Session and definitely enjoyed the defensive effort. Sayin was solid in protecting the ball and being accurate, he obviously wasn’t helped by some surprising early drops. Perhaps Arch Manning was a little over-hyped, I know that’s shocking.

It was good to see Corso’s final pick happen on the field, and they had to hustle to roll that set off the field because the drum major was about halfway through the ‘O’ and the set was still where the ‘h’ was about to happen.

Also enjoyed seeing in person the unveiling of the ‘2024’ up there on the list of Natty years. And to see the first win in the ‘Shoe against an AP #1 team since 1985 Iowa.

This low-scoring game reminds me of a Miami-FSU game that was played on Labor Day, before which Bobby Bowden complained that it's too hard to get a new team ready to play another elite team on the first weekend. It was a defensive battle, much like this game, and the final score was I think, 10-3. I don't remember what happened last year in those big games on this weekend, but yesterday's contest in the 'shoe seems pretty standard. Bucks' coaching staff did an amazing job of preparation, the good guys got it done, and that's that afaic.

College football grades: Alabama gets 'F,' Georgia and Oregon earn 'A' marks in Week 1 report card

A look at how national championship contenders fared in Week 1 action as the 2025 college football season commenced

Texas
Grade:
C-
Result: 14-7 loss at No. 1 Ohio State
Title odds: +750
Texas played great defensively, but the Longhorns' passing game was a disaster for roughly 56 minutes as Arch Manning's starting tenure began with a thud. Ten of his 17 completions went to running backs or tight ends, and Texas didn't gain 10+ yards on a pass until the fourth quarter. There's no shame in losing on the road to Ohio State, but the offensive performance was concerning.

Ohio State

Grade: A
Result: 14-7 win vs. No. 1 Texas
Title odds: +600
Ohio State pitched a shutout for over 56 minutes in a near-perfect debut for new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. The offense sputtered some, but Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin outplayed counterpart Arch Manning. For a program that lost both coordinators and 14 NFL Draft picks, it was an encouraging start against an elite opponent.

We had nine possessions on Offense. Four of those started inside our 10 yard line. Three of them started inside the 5 yard line. One possession ended because of a dropped ball (Klare). We scored TDs on two possessions. One drive was for 80 yds and the other drive was for 87 yds. Each drive took 13 plays to score. Both drives took exactly 8 minutes and 57 seconds each. Time consumed on both drives was 17 minutes and 54 seconds. According to USA Today.

Ok, field position, new QB, new RBs, but it felt like 1961 again with Woody insisting on making the running game work. I felt like both coaches trusted their defense more than their offense. Did anyone notice if Patricia made any changes to his defense after the Bucks went up by 14?

Final thought, maybe both teams played it tight knowing that 1 loss to a top 3 team wouldn't get you in trouble come CFP selection time.
