Game Thread #1 Texas at #2/#3 tOSU, Sat. Aug. 30th, 12pm ET, FOX

I swear it felt like ESPN made a call to the referees at halftime: Texas isn't losing this game.
First drive for OSU in the 2nd half, no flag for tackling Smith before the ball gets to him.
First drive for Texas in the 2nd half, some lineman for Texas clothes-lines an OSU defender, Manning gets outside and picks up the first down. Sure, there's lots of other plays in that drive, and it ended with Manning falling on a pile of bodies, and his backs falling on him. But it felt like Texas was going to take it over at that point.

It really is wild how media is breaking down this game. Fox just ran a halftime segment with highlights and they went from the final score to how unfair it was for Arch to have crazy expectations and this would only help Texas. Then on to the next highlight. 0 discussion about what this means for OSU or how they project now.

I expect this from ESPN but you'd think Fox with their B1G interests would hype Ohio State.

I think sports media as a whole is embarrassed about crowning Arch the next legend and basically declaring Texas was unquestionably the best team all month leading up to this. Of course they are never going to admit they were dead wrong

I didn’t realize that Texas had 180 yards the final quarter as they pressed to catch up. Only gave up 150 yards through 3 quarters which is wild. I’d imagine OSU started purposely giving up the underneath stuff to keep the clock moving.

Add that to the OSU offense going into burn the clock mode and there’s no wonder the total yardage worked out the way it did. What an odd game in that you always felt like the offense was going to make a big play and then there was no concern when on defense after it was obvious we had an edge there.

Odd game.

No sacks given up by the OL vs what should be the toughest front 7 we face all season. Not bad.

Patricia
Hartline
The "D" , especially on magnificent goal line stand
To Ig just because he didnt get called for interference
and lastly for number 73 for the Horns who gave us his all ( closet Buckeye?)

This secondary seems better than last years. I think Matthews is on a different level compared to Burke from last year. Probably should’ve caught that other throw and Sonny almost picked off.

Patricia is going to be fun to have for the next year. He did exactly what he said he’d do which is bring our athletes on pressure. The defense always felt safe though even when he blitzed. Unlike 2022 when Knowles would bring 7 with man coverage.

Agree on Matthews. Might just be better foot speed and closing ability like on the INT. Reminded me of Lattimore. Igbinosun was good last year sans penalties and can play himself into the 2nd or 3rd round this season.

Excited to see more from the defense. I underestimated how much impact Reese can have. If Patricia keeps using him like this all season, he’s going lead the team in sacks and TFL. Dude looked like a monster taking on 300lb OL and throwing them off.
Manning missed throws and the defense will have to work on the handful of plays like when Wingo got wide open, but for game one in a season, that was elite execution. Same for Texas’ defense.

I think the run defense will need some work, but agree that they were happy to give Texas the run and short passes to force long drives. They also did a great job maintaining rush discipline.

Manning making elite throws into tight coverage was the only reason this got close.

Very tough offense to plan for. Mobile QB who can throw and a lot of talent at WR/TE. A lot to be excited for that’s for sure.

Will be illegal what this defense is going to do to Grambling next week lol

I thought the safety opposite Downs was tremendous too. I think it there’s one improvement we could see it’d be from Styles Jr. because he lost contain a few times.

Extremely nitpicking though because I don’t really know if anyone had a bad game.
