1-loss and in the NC game or no loss Rose Bowl?

What would you rather have happen to the Buckeyes this season?

  • 12-0 but end up ranked #3 in the BCS, but we win the Big 10 outright and go to the Rose Bowl.

  • 11-1, but there is only one undefeated team, and end up #2 in the BCS and go to the NC game.

We ain't Nebraska...and after that clusterfuck and the one with Oklahoma getting into the title game after getting raped by Kansas State, the BCS won't let it happen.

Tressel's #1 goal is to win a national championship, not to get into the second-best bowl game.

There is no mechanism that would prevent it. What if tOSU and another team were the only undefeated teams (and there were no 1-loss teams)? Then a tOSU loss to Michigan would still leave them as one of only two teams with one loss or less.

I think I would always prefer a shot at the NC (and no worse than a 2nd place finish) over merely a RB opportunity or even win. What good is an undefeated season if it does not earn us an NC nowadays?

Go Bucks!

I agree to a point, but I think his #1 goal is to win all their games, and a Big Ten title, then let the cards fall whatever way they will. I think if you asked Jim if he'd rather go undefeated during the regular season, or lose one game.........we all know how he'd answer that question.

Show me a season that had all but two teams in the country with at least two losses heading into the latter half of November...ever.

Exactly...the goal is to win all the games. It's not Tressel's job to worry about what the BCS does...you can only control what you do on the field. Obviously you play to win championships...but I think your first goal is to win.

Personally I don't think we have anything to worry about this year...since we'll start rated too high to miss out on a NC game if we go undefeated...but u never know down the road.

A late Penn State drive against NW was all that kept this from happening this year...so...it CAN happen. Plus, I contend that if Texas or USC had lost one of their last games, they'd have still stayed ahead of Penn State...especially USC...but you never know. You just never know what could happen with the BCS. It's unpredictable. It's flawed. It's sick. It has no place in college football.

Well we haven't had a lot of 12-game seasons in the past, but starting this year we'll have 12-game regular seasons every year.

Actually, up until the 2003 season 12-game regular seasons were quite common (especially you guys). Going back to 1994 (which would include a 10-season span back from 2003 when most teams went to an 11-game season):

Ohio State: '94 (13), '95, '97, '99, '02 (13), '03
Southern Cal: '96, '98, '99, '00, '02, '03, '04, '05

Half of our regular seasons from 1994 (6 of 12) have been 12+ games, while two thirds (8 of 12) of yours have been 12+ games.

Would you rather of been USC of 3 years ago disputed champs with one loss or Auburn from 2 years ago not viewed at all as champions with 0 loses. Auburn for me.

I'd rather be USC 10 times out of 10. An undefeated season is great and all, but nothing beats a National Championship. I repeat, nothing. I'd rather have a National Championship to hold onto down the road, rather than just be bitter and pissed off that you got screwed out of a chance at a National Championship game. You practice and play all season to win the championship.

I don't think there has ever been one, although 1990 was close. But it's not the 'latter half' of November that matters, it's the end of the conference championship games, which didn't exist before. Although tOSU actually ending up BCS #2 after a loss to scUM is extremely unlikely, the extra games make it a remote possibilty.

Look at the AP poll at the end of the 1990 regular season. Then add an ACC championship game for Georgia Tech vs. Miami, and a Big-12 Title game with Colorado vs. Texas. It's probable that a tOSU team that had just 1 loss in its last game would have ended up #2 if Georgia Tech lost their CCG to Miami.

And how Colorado got an NC with a loss, a tie, and a "should-have-lost to Missouri but didn't because of the 5th down" still bugs the hell out of me!
