'09 UT OL John Martinez (USC Signee)

And what I'm saying is that this shouldn't be about tackles v. guards, it should be about OL vs. other positions.

I see your point...but the problem is we OL more suited with OG playing OT right now....

but again...I have a feeling Martinez will end with an offer because of possible transfers or other issues...

I agree with Mililani....but I have a feeling that his offer is waiting on other recruits, not so much a new scholly being open since McDougald hasn't been a "commit" for awhile now

And the position he plays (Center/Guard). We need Tackles at this stage.

Really? I see Hall and Longo as tackles and we have both Shugarts and Adams at tackle. That's 4 young ones, with James, Henderson, and Norwell all being top notch tackles in '10. We have Mewhort and Linsley already, but we have no guards in last years class, since we missed on Jenkins. So that means only 3 interior OL in '08 and '09 so far (just enough to fill it up with no injuries) and 4 tackles (enough for a two deep). Add to that that there is a plethora of great tackles for '10 and that no interior OL has popped up other than maybe Taylor Miller, and I say we need another interior OL for this class...I want Martinez. I don't think this is strictly numbers though, as offers have opened up and went to other players. For some reason, I just don't think he's as high on the staff's board as ours.

I think Hall will ultimately be a guard, especially if we can get Norwell, James and possibly Henderson. He can definitely play tackle, but he might be better inside anyways. Plus, if he stays at tackle, he'll be sitting for 3 years behind JB, assuming he is forced into action as a true frosh because of our lack of depth. Assuming Adams and Shugarts can stay healthy, they'll be starting, and Hall is too talented to not be on the field.

I wouldn't mind an offer to Martinez, if for no other reason than quality depth. But he came to camp and left without an offer. We'll see what happens when/if he makes it up here on the 22nd, but I don't an offer coming. I think the staff, much to my shagrin, are happy with the numbers they are bringing in on the offensive line this year.

Also, if it were up to me, I'd only go after guys who can play tackle unless they're dominant inside guys Brew, Linsley or Mewhort. A good tackle can play guard, but a guard can't usually play tackle (Browning and Rehring, for example). Our tackle depth is abysmal, and it seems to be a problem every year.

I never count on potential commits from two classes out ('10 in this case), when we're still working on the incoming class. What if Hall and/or Longo get hurt or not pan out? If we have an extra ship or two this class, why not first address the area of most need now?

Nor do I...I'm just saying that on paper, we have more tackles and to me it seems we need guards more than tackles at this point. I do think another OL in this class would be great.

I agree with Westbuck that Hall can play guard but I think there will be some transitioning there. I think a true guard like Martinex would be nice.

Not trying to hi-jack Martinez' thread, but when talking about guards, I can't envision a better prospect than Linsley(for a spread option type offense with Pryor and Berry). The video in his thread was one of the best O-lineman tapes I have ever seen. When your guard has assignments to take out a linebacker and then track down safeties 20 yards down the field, you have something special. I think Hall stays at tackle, b/c there won't be an intereior need while he is at tOSU, IMO.

Not trying to curb the discussion, but since when is hijack spelled with a dash in the middle?

Martinez is certainly a need and the idea that we can simply rely on what we have has been a failed strategy by the staff. We all think Adams, Brewster, Shugarts, Mewhort, Linsley, and Longo will be good, but OL is the most difficult position to project. It NEVER hurts to have another OL prospect, esepcially as good as Martinez. Earlier in the year, many would have said that OL was one of our deeper positions, but we see how our depth has been exposed. We are still 1-2 injuries from disaster.

Tackles is what we need...Not really inside guys...

Why though? We have a two deep with Adams, Shugarts, Hall, and Longo at tackle, plus tons of talent in '10 at tackle and nobody showing up yet at guard other than maybe Taylor Miller...why do we need more tackles this year? Is Hall actually being projected at guard by our staff? The way I see it with '08+'09 OL:
LT: Adams, Longo (Norwell?) (Henderson?)
G: Linsley (Taylor Miller?)
C: Brewster
G: Mewhort
RT: Shugarts, Hall (James?)

- To me, the interior looks solid besides depth, even if you move Hall inside. We'll have Boren but he is a junior. Also, who else do we have young at guard? Connor Smith (transfer? no pt hardly), Evan Blankenship (no pt), Browning moves inside? Then at tackle, Andy Miller (lots of pt) and Bryant Browning (starter) are both fairly young. Seems to me we are beyond set at tackle but we are in need of guards.

You can always move inside...Longo could very easily move inside, same with Hall, Shugarts as well...

It sucks when you don't have depth on the outside...Much like this year PSU game and 2 years ago when Barton went down and we didn't have a RT...

I would honestly say that if we land Hall we should be done with this class, and then go get some big timers next year...
