'09 UT OL John Martinez (USC Signee)

ESPN - Walters, Kelley lead the 2009 blockers - Football Recruiting

Best in space

What Scouts Inc. looks for: To be a productive offensive lineman in space, one must have control of his body in terms of balance and agility. These players must be able to hone in on and hit a moving target. The more athletic an offensive lineman is, the better blocker he'll be in the openfield. The offensive linemen who are steady and reliable when kicking out, trapping, logging, and turning upfield are considered to be the best linemen in space. Great effort is often the trademark of a lineman who is exceptional out in the open. To lead downfield or race crossfield to search out the opposition is more of an intangible quality than a physical talent.

1. John Martinez (Salt Lake City, Utah/Cottonwood)

There is no doubt about Martinez's athletic abilities. When you watch this guy in agility drills, pulling and trapping, and leading downfield, it's easy to understand why he has been identified as the best offensive lineman in space. Martinez is the top guard in the country. He has also shown his great versatility by lining up at center. Not only does he have great natural athletic ability, he is fundamentally sound and a great technician. Martinez does an outstanding job bringing his legs with him when kicking out a defensive end or when turning upfield to pick up a linebacker. His legs never quit after initial contact, and he regularly finishes his blocks. He gives great effort getting downfield to pick up an extra block or when going crossfield to get in front of the ball carrier. Martinez rarely misses a block in space no matter how linebackers and safeties try to avoid him.

I apologize if this has been answered before, but I've been keeping up with this thread and I don't think it has...

To any of the (elitist) experts out there, why do you think we haven't offered Martinez? He seems to be one of the most "athletic" OL's in the class, which is what we seem to be needing most on our OL. A lot of people have been raving about him, and it's not like we're taking a ton of OL in this class, nor are we running out of room (I don't think...)

Does the staff just think he's overrated? Already too close to his potential? Just hate taking a lot of OL in a class? Will offer him later?

Really curious because I think this would be a great get.

same here. A lineman that can move but, osu would put him at DT/DE. lol

We'll know exactly where OSU stands with Martinez (and vice versa) after his visit...until then it seems the staff is happy to take Hall, Linsley and Mewhort this year.

Linsley is very athletic as well...I have a feeling they like him the same as Martinez, if not better

...The problem right now is it seems staff is more interested in another athletic OT at this point rather than an athletic OG...mainly because the roster has enough OG's and its easier to move athletic OT to OG...not vice versa (look at Browning's struggles)

I think Martinez's offer rides on the attrition along the OL we will see this off-season

At this point it's as much about the numbers as anything else.
