AD says school heard of the July charges, but didn't want to isolate senior.

MIDDLETOWN ? Middletown High School Athletic Director Gary Lebo expressed great pride in the emphasis he and the MHS coaching staff has when it comes to character development of the school's student-athletes.
That's why when incidents involving a Middie student, such as the ones that have recently been encountered by senior football player Dwayne "Deejay" Hunter, Lebo tends to look on the positive side of things.
Hunter, 18, will appear at 8:15 a.m. today, Jan. 21, in Middletown Municipal Court for a pretrial hearing on felonious assault charges for his alleged involvement in a BB gun shooting of a teen last week.
After his arrest last week, charges of criminal damaging, assault and aggravated trespassing from July also were discovered. The details of that offense were not released because Hunter was a juvenile at the time.
The incident in July, which occurred just a few weeks before the football season began, has left some people wondering why, when athletes can be kicked off teams for other offenses such as drinking alcohol, Hunter was allowed to play football for the Middies this past fall.

Updated 7:27 PM Monday, May 11, 2009 MIDDLETOWN ? A standout Middie athlete is in trouble again after a female classmate accused him of assaulting and holding her against her will inside a hotel room, police said.
Dwayne ?DeeJay? Hunter Jr., 18, was arrested at Middletown High School today, May 11, according to police.
Hunter, a member of the MHS track team, is one of the top sprinters in the state.
He was charged with assault and unlawful restraint after a 17-year-old girl said he choked and slammed her against a wall Saturday, May 9, at the Middletown Ramada Inn, according to authorities.
The girl, whom police said had a restraining order against Hunter, was encouraged by friends to tell her mother, who called police today.

Middletown cornerback Dwayne "Deejay" Hunter seemed to have a lot of promise. The University of Tennessee offered the 18-year-old a football scholarship for next year, an offer that went unsigned. His 10.50 time in the 100-meter dash at a Greater Miami Conference meet this spring also got Hunter recognized as one of the area's top track and field athletes.

But since January, Hunter's shining future has been tarnished by alleged violence and criminal charges. A Butler County common pleas judge issued a bench warrant Tuesday for Hunter's arrest after he was charged with assaulting a former girlfriend - allegedly choking her unconscious at an after-prom party Saturday at the Middletown Ramada Inn on Ohio 122.

Hunter is due in Middletown Municipal Court Wednesday for arraignment on misdemeanor charges of assault and unlawful restraint.

The 17-year-old girl, a Middletown student, told police she encountered Hunter at the party, where he later started going through the numbers in her cell phone and began questioning her about them.

It was the second time Hunter was charged for assaulting the girl. The first came when he was a juvenile, at age 17, Det. Janice Jones said.

"She stated that he just went off on her, started hitting her and choked her out so that she was unconscious," states a police report describing the latest incident.

When the girl woke up, Hunter demanded she come with him in his car, saying he was going to kill her if she didn't.

"As they were driving, he was hitting her in the face with his hand and fist. He drove to an unknown location. He continued to say that he was going to kill her and continued to hit her," the report said.

The girl tried to hide her injuries from her mother for a day; avoiding her by going to work and staying in her room. Her boss sent her home from work. The girl then nursed her wounds at her grandparent's house. Friends talked her into telling her mom, who called police Monday. Officers noted that the girl's face and lip were swollen. "This is a step in the right direction for this young lady and we hope she sticks to it," Jones said. "We just hope we can empower her to get out of this relationship."

The latest incident comes less than four months after Hunter was charged with felonious assault for shooting a 15-year-old boy in the face with a pellet gun. Hunter was in his car at the time. He passed the boy, doubled back and shot the boy in the eye and chin, Jones said. The boy didn't know Hunter and they had no beef with each other, she said. "It was like a practice drive-by shooting," Jones said. That case is pending in common pleas court, with a hearing scheduled May 29.

Middletown school officials did not return calls Tuesday.

Hunter, reached on his cell phone, hung up. He did not return a message left later on his voice mail.

ESPN Judge bars athlete from team sports -ESPN Rise FOOTBALL

HAMILTON, Ohio -- A standout Ohio athlete has been ordered to stay on the sidelines after pleading guilty to felonious assault.

Dwayne "Deejay" Hunter, 19, was sentenced Thursday to 180 days in jail, 500 hours of community service and five years of probation. Among terms of his probation, Hunter cannot play organized sports -- not even intramurals.

"We're going to see who Dwayne Hunter the person is, not who Dwayne Hunter the star athlete is," Butler County Common Pleas Judge Andrew Nastoff said, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "You're 19 years old. And you are standing right here, six inches away from a prison number and the potential to go away to prison for eight years -- that's two presidential terms."

With credit for time served, Hunter will be released from jail just before Thanksgiving. He will not serve additional jail time unless he violates any aspect of the conditions of his probation, Nastoff said.

The former Middletown High School football and track star pleaded guilty in July to felonious assault for shooting a 15-year-old boy twice in the face with a BB gun. Hunter fired the gun from a vehicle, with one projectile striking the victim's eyelid, according to the Enquirer.

"You were probably an inch away from blinding someone," Nastoff told Hunter, according to the newspaper. Nastoff told Hunter he must get either a full-time job or enroll in full-time schooling within 30 days upon his release from jail.

Hunter had been recruited by the University of Tennessee and Big Ten and Big East schools, but they backed away after Hunter's legal problems surfaced, according to The Associated Press.

"Virtually every Division I school was interested in him," Hunter's attorney, Frank Schiavone, told the Enquirer.

I'm not sure that I totally agree with this. (Assuming that he did graduate from high school) his only chance to enroll as a full time student would be on an athletic scholarship. There should be a provision that would allow him to play (only) college ball during his 5 year probation period. So come Thanksgiving he better be looking for a full time job. :(

Rich Rodriguez would probably be more than happy to take a chance on him. Who knows maybe he could actually graduate from Michigan with a useless General Studies degree. :biggrin:

I agree with you in that football was his chance to get an education. However, it is no one's right to play college football, and he learned that the hard way. I think he'd rather take a half year of jail time with no football than 8 years. Still a sad story though.

I understand she was trying to humble him by taking the way the only thing that probably mattered to the kid and hopefully her approach makes the kid think for a change.

However on the flip side it might appear to the youth (you know how your brain worked at that age, lol) that all anybody really cares about is football and not the victim(s). If he was real good at fishing, car repair, drawing or skateboarding would they ban him from participating in that as well? Probably not. Hopefully this turns out well but I'm not sure about this judges approach. Sentencing him to volunteering 20 hours a week at a battered womens shelter and rehabbing victims of gun violence would of been more serving imo.

Marshall football: Former 4-star recruit joins the Herd

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- A former Rivals.com 4-star football prospect has been added to Marshall's 2011 recruiting class.

Dwayne "D.J." Hunter is enrolled at Marshall University and will play football for the Thundering Herd. Hunter, a 6-foot, 196-pound cornerback, was rated the 17th-best at his position and sixth-best prospect in Ohio coming out of Middletown High School in 2009.

Hunter originally committed to Phillip Fulmer and Tennessee in July of 2008 and remained committed when Lane Kiffin replaced Fulmer after the 2008 season, but legal issues derailed Hunter's collegiate plans just before National Signing Day in 2009. Kiffin pulled Hunter's scholarship offer before Signing Day.

Hunter was heavily recruited by SEC and Big 10 schools, which included the likes of Tennessee, Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State. He took an official recruiting visit to West Virginia on Dec. 5, 2008. Marshall Coach Doc Holliday was the recruiting coordinator for the Mountaineers at the time.

Hunter is eligible to participate in spring football drills.
