Fairfax center Sidney brings complete set of skills
The transfer from Artesia is a big man who can dunk, dribble well and shoot from the outside. He changes the dynamics in City Section.
November 14, 2007

At 6 feet 10, 235 pounds, with the ability to dribble like a point guard, dunk as if he were Shaquille O'Neal and shoot three-pointers with relative ease, Renardo Sidney is no ordinary high school basketball player.

He arrived in the Southland in the summer of 2006 from Mississippi, enrolled as a sophomore at Lakewood Artesia and led the Pioneers to the state Division III championship.

In September, he transferred to Los Angeles Fairfax, the defending City Section and state Division I champion. Harvey Kitani, entering his 27th season as coach of the Lions, is quickly discovering he has never had a player as talented as Sidney.

"What's amazing about the guy is he has a lot of skills," Kitani said. "I'm impressed with the fact he has a pretty complete game."

USC Coach Tim Floyd has zeroed in on Sidney as an important recruiting target. How else to explain Floyd's showing up for a meaningless junior college basketball game this month in which Sidney happened to be sitting in the bleachers? When Sidney left at halftime, so did Floyd.

Sidney turns 18 on Dec. 6, making him a man among boys. And there's another oddity about him -- he wears only size 15 shoes.

"I got little feet for a big dude," he said.

Why does this seem fishy?

How would Floyd know that Sidney is going to attend a juco game? Obviously if Floyd left at the same time then he really wasn't watching anyone in the game. This kid may be like OJ Mayo and maybe we should steer clear.

If he is interested as much as he says he is with regard to Ohio State, I think I would leave it up to Matta on how he might fit in with the team. Thad has been pretty good at that since he has been here.

Sidney has been limited in practice with his new high school due to tendonitis but is starting to round into form. Sidney is averaging around 27 points and 16 rebounds through the first four games (4-0). UCLA, USC, Ohio State and Texas have been in to watch him play.

Renardo Sidney, the country's No. 1 junior player, scored 32 points as he led Fairfax (Los Angeles) past San Diego 62-34 at the Amare Stoudemire Invitational Classic.

HAINES CITY, Fla. ? There was a buzz in the gym with the anticipation of a late night showdown between Jeremy Tyler, the No. 1 sophomore and Renardo Sidney, the No. 1 junior in the country. However, most of the crowd at the Amare Stoudemire Invitational Classic headed home at halftime since Tyler and his San Diego High School team had no answer for Sidney and Los Angeles Fairfax High School.
Final score: Fairfax 62, San Diego 34; Sidney 32 points, Tyler 0 points.
The numbers tell the story. The 6-foot-10 Sidney dominated the game from the outset. He made 14 of 21 shots from the field. He also had nine rebounds, two blocks and two assists.
Guarded by Tyler from the outset, Sidney got going after initially struggling against the athleticism of Tyler. Sidney figured out that he couldn't just go through Tyler, but would have to use his outstanding body control to outmaneuver the sophomore.

When asked about his recruiting situation, Sidney rattled off an unconvincing school list of UCLA, USC, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Ohio State. When pressed on who is really recruiting him the hardest, however, USC was the only school mentioned. In fact, USC assistant Gib Arnold showed up an hour or so before the game after spending 13 hours flying to the Orlando area from an event in Hawaii.

In his highly anticipated match up against the No. 1 prospect in the 2010 class Jeremy Tyler, Sidney dominated the game to the tune of 32 points, nine rebounds, two blocks, two assists and two turnovers. Dominguez does in Sidney, Fairfax
Press-Telegram staff reports

Despite first-half foul trouble to its best player, the Dominguez High boys basketball team showed off its depth, not to mention some clutch free-throw shooting, in knocking off Fairfax, 57-52, in the championship game of the Amare Stoudemire Invitational on Saturday night in Davenport, Fla.
Junior guard Jordan Hamilton led the Dons (7-1) with 17 points and 10 rebounds, despite picking up his third foul early in the second quarter.
Junior forward Marquis Moody came off the bench to score seven points to help replace Hamilton's production.
In the fourth quarter, Dominguez knocked down all 13 of its free-throw attempts, including six from Hamilton and four from Bryce Cartwright.
The Lions (7-1) were led by 6-foot-10 junior center Renardo Sidney's 20 points. Sidney, a transfer from Artesia High, was selected the tournament MVP.

Prized recruit gives hope to Bruins fans
Saturday, January 12, 2008

The Press-Enterprise

LOS ANGELES - Renardo Sidney isn't ready to choose a college yet, but he did offer UCLA fans some hope.

As he sat courtside at Pauley Pavilion on Saturday waiting for the UCLA-Washington State game to begin, the coveted Los Angeles Fairfax High junior said he does not intend to go anywhere outside California.

"That's a hint for you," Sidney said. "I love it here too much to leave."

UCLA is one of dozens of schools recruiting Sidney, but the Bruins have not offered the 6-foot-10 big man a scholarship yet even though many recruiting services rank him as the nation's top prospect in the class of 2009. Questions about Sidney's attitude, work ethic and conditioning have dogged him even after leading Artesia High to a state title last year before transferring to Fairfax this fall.

"People say I'm lazy or whatever, but how can you be lazy scoring 30 points a game?" Sidney said. "Right now my conditioning is where I want it to be, and I'm working hard to keep it that way."

Sidney, a Mississippi native, is also being recruited by Ohio State, Florida and Texas, among others.

A group of UCLA students made it clear they hope Sidney dons a Bruins uniform one day by chanting his name before tip-off. Sidney acknowledged the cheer with a pump of his right fist. Then he spoke glowingly about the UCLA program.

"I really like UCLA," he said. "I like the way they're an up-tempo team. They get the ball inside well and they play defense well. It's definitely a great program."
