Mustangs' Woods might have tumor

Monday, October 08, 2007 Mike Peticca

Plain Dealer Reporter
Strongsville wide receiver D.J. Woods might soon face surgery for what doctors believe is a tumor in his lower back.
Woods, who has made an oral commitment to play at the University of Nebraska, said Sunday the problem was detected in a full-body MRI last Wednesday. The 6-0, 180-pound senior said there is a possibility the image on the MRI is a bulging disc or similar problem, but doctors believe it is a tumor.
Woods will undergo tests Tuesday, when doctors hope to make a more precise diagnosis and schedule any surgery.

Woods awaits test results

Wednesday, October 10, 2007
From staff reports
Strongsville senior wide receiver D.J. Woods underwent medical exams Tuesday afternoon for what doctors believe is a tumor in his lower back.
The results of a nerve conduction velocity test - used to detect nerve injury - won't be known until Thursday morning.
"We don't know how much nerve damage there is, if any," Woods' mother, Kelly Woods, said.
After the test results come back, Woods will undergo surgery.
"We were hoping he'd have the operation done sometime this week," said Kelly Woods. "However, it now appears he won't have the surgery until next week."
Woods, a 6-0, 180-pound Nebraska recruit, didn't play in the Mustangs' last two games. He has caught 38 passes for 745 yards and five touchdowns in five games. It is unlikely Woods could return to action even if the Mustangs qualify for the playoffs.

Woods to have back surgery

Friday, October 12, 2007
From staff reports
Strongsville senior wide receiver D.J. Woods will undergo surgery Monday in Akron for what doctors believe is a tumor in his lower back.
On Tuesday, Woods was given a nerve conduction velocity test, which is used to detect nerve injury. Results came back negative on Thursday, said Kelly Woods, D.J.'s mom.
On Monday, doctors will remove any growth they find.

"The doctors say there's a 10-15 percent chance [there's no tumor and] it's a bulging disk," Kelly Woods said.
Woods, a 6-0, 180-pound Nebraska recruit, has sat out the Mustangs' past two games. He has caught 38 passes for 745 yards and five touchdowns. It is unlikely Woods could return even if the Mustangs qualify for the playoffs.
