MASSILLON Dan McCarthy already had the skills, the bright future, the pedigree, the amazing cast of talent around him.

Now, state championship in hand, the Cardinal Mooney High School junior has it all.

The star quarterback/safety made key plays on both sides of the football Friday, rallying his Cardinals from a 5-point halftime deficit to defeat Plain City Jonathan Alder, 26-12, in the Division IV state championship game at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.

Mooney (14-0), the Associated Press poll champion, scored 19 unanswered points in the second half to win its second title in three seasons and sixth overall.

McCarthy rushed for 161 yards, threw for 61 and made a key fumble recovery on defense. He showed why he's considered a Division I talent.

Ohio State, seeing McCarthy as a college safety, already has offered the junior a scholarship. His older brother Kyle, now a safety at Notre Dame, quarterbacked the 2004 Mooney team that won it all.

"Not only do we have playmakers, but the guys make plays," said Mooney coach P.J. Fecko, who has seven or eight Division I college prospects. "We've been fortunate."

Big underdog Alder (13-2), in its first state final, scored on consecutive possessions in the second quarter to lead 12-7 at halftime. A renewed emphasis on running McCarthy out of the shotgun helped turn the tide in the second half.

McCarthy had 15 of his carries and 140 of his yards after halftime.

"We really turned it on the second half," McCarthy said. "We really got the fire going, and our line was doing a great job opening some great holes."

A 33-yard McCarthy run keyed Mooney's opening drive of the third quarter, which ended with McCarthy plunging in from the 1 on fourth down for a 13-12 lead.

"We knew at halftime that going to (McCarthy), we'd be OK," Fecko said. "The way they were playing things and the way we can utilize Danny in the shotgun ... (we) kind of woke up in the second half and moved the ball down the field."

So ended the upset bid of Alder, which committed four turnovers - three consecutively in the second half. Two directly led to Mooney scores.

"They certainly put the ball into the hands of their best player," Alder coach Steve Coate said of McCarthy. "Any outstanding team gets to the point when you know you gotta rely on your best player, and they are going to take you the right way or not get it done."

McCarthy recovered a Luke Bates fumble at Alder's 8 on the last play of the third quarter. On the first play of the fourth, Michael Zordich went 8 yards up the middle for a touchdown and 20-12 lead.

Alder was still alive, however, and seemed poised to get good field position three minutes into the fourth quarter with Mooney backed up to its own 7, facing second-and-15.

Then McCarthy broke loose for a 41-yard backbreaker. It was the linchpin of a 15-play, 88-yard drive that ate up seven minutes and resulted in the clinching TD, a 2-yard run by Brandon Beachum with 3:10 left.

Mike Bates had 73 rushing yards and both Alder TDs. Quarterback Austin Schlosser was 8-of-25 for 91 yards.

"They came out fighting, and we knew it was going to be a dogfight," McCarthy said. "We know what we're capable of doing, and we came out in the second half fighting."

Loeffler and Carr are attacking Ohio this year...

Probably b/c they struck out last year...

With the guys they have offered this year it looks like they could do the same, besides maybe a guy like Sanders if we don't offer, but he will probalby go south if we don't offer...

According to my boy Bill Greene, Michigan has zero chance at McCarthy, Adams or Torrence. They have a slightly above zero shot at Rudolph, althought that is also likely an OSU/ND battle. The only other Ohio kid they have offered so far is Sanders...they have a shot at him, all be it a slim one. Word is he wants to go South if OSU does not offer.

Like Rudolph, McCarthy should come down to OSU and ND...
