Jones visit to IU was 'great'

Mount Vernon (N.Y.) senior forward Kevin Jones made an official visit to Indiana last weekend and was present at Hoosier Hysteria. His brother, Gerard Jones, said the family left Bloomington with a good impression of the school and the coaching staff.

"It went great," Gerard said. "Everything was great the way it was. Kevin liked it all and the Indiana fans are some of the best in the country. They did everything to impress the recruits.

"It meant a lot to Kevin that the fans took the time to learn a lot about him."

And perhaps something that left and even more lasting impression was a conversation with the coaching staff. Gerard Jones said the coaches pulled them aside and informed them of the news that was about to break - that coach Kelvin Sampson and assistant Rob Senderoff were about to be punished by the school for recruiting violations.

"We really appreciated that from them," Gerard said. "They didn't have to tell us but they did. They turned themselves in when they could have swept it under the rug. But they didn't do that; they took responsibility."

Jones said the violations won't stop Kevin from looking at the Hoosiers.

Kevin Jones has also already made an official visit to Ohio State and has upcoming visits to West Virginia this weekend and later to Massachusetts and Pittsburgh. He's slated to make an unofficial later this week to Seton Hall and is also still considering local colleges Syracuse, St. John's and Rutgers. He expected to sign in November.

"The timetable is still the same," Gerard said. "We have a couple of weeks to go. It's going to be an extremely tough decision with everything. Already with (Ohio State and Indiana), we have certain things we like about each school.

"Indiana and Ohio State did a great job and there were things he took away from both schools and I am sure there will be things from the other (three) schools. The impression they made on Kevin is going to make (a decision) that much tougher."

Gerard said he has talked with Kevin and hopes his brother has "a gut feeling" on what school to attend after all the visits are complete.

Personally, I feel that we have a good shot with Jones.......he is still developing a consistent jump shot but he is a very good inside player right now. I hopes were raised when comments were made about the Ohio State visit when speaking about the Indiana visit. :wink2:

Though I never coached directly against Jones (was too young), those Mount Vernon kids are gamers. They have produced some kids who just flat out know how to get it done, despite not always being the most polished. If Jones' attitdue is anything like the kids we faced, he will be a great addition to any college team - hopefully the Buckeyes!

Kevin Jones is coming to the University of Massachusetts, and the men's basketball team hopes he likes what he sees.

The 6-foot-8 senior forward from Mount Vernon, N.Y., a top-30 recruit in many analysts' eyes, will make his official visit to UMass today. Jones will then make his college decision soon, according to his older brother, Gerard, who is supervising his brother's selection.

UMass is a finalist with Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Indiana, West Virginia, Seton Hall, Rutgers and St. John's.

looks like IU might be out of the running with the departure of their assistant coach

Kevin Jones, a forward from Mount Vernon, N.Y., ranked among the nation's top 100 seniors, had been considering IU and attended the opening practice, Hoosier Hysteria.
"Coach Senderoff played a major part in recruiting Kevin and being a New York guy, kind of helped me and my family with the whole situation," said Gerard Jones, Kevin's brother who is handling Kevin's recruitment.
"When a kid leaves the house, you want some type of security that someone is looking out for the kid. Indiana is definitely one of the schools Kevin was strongly considering. Now with this happening with Rob, it does make us take a step back and look at the situation."
Kevin Jones is scheduled to visit Pittsburgh this week. Gerard said his brother plans to sign during the early signing period that begins Nov. 14.
"With everything going on, we'll have to take a look at everything a little more closely," Gerard said.
