'08 NV PF Luke Babbitt (Nevada Verbal)

Babbitt was perhaps a 4 year player who was basketball all the way. Pryor may play 3 years..and basketball will be a "2nd sport". To me it doesn't even come close to making up for the loss.

True, but Terrelle isn't taking up a scholarship. He could provide some depth in 2008 while someone is recruited to fill Babbitt's spot in 2009.

This does open a spot for Eric Wallace to play more at the "4" spot for us, especially with guys like Diebler, Turner and Buford on the wings now (I am expecting Offutt to play more point than on th wing). You can't blame a kid for wanting to stay close to home, it is a big decision. so good luck to Luke at Nevada!
That's a great point. Though Eric Wallace might be considered a tad undersized, his athleticism (and hops) could help him fill a position like that (much like JJ Sulinger did 2 years ago). A lot of where he will play will depend on how he plays once he hits the hardwood, so until then, it's all speculation. Love thinking about that kinda stuff though :tongue2:

Junkie- Where do you think Matta goes from here? Do you think we might try to get back in with Gates, go after the best available, or stand pat with what we will have? Off the top of my head, it seems to me our cupboards will look fairly full at PF (or C for that matter) when '08 rolls around.

Could make things look nicer for Van Tresse and Boynton as well

With only a 9 man rotation this year, in '08 (which is still 2 years away) we potentially will have 11 guys on scholarship. There are plenty of 4's available still, though not many with a current listed interest in Ohio State, but we all know how Matta is on the recruiting front and could stir up some interest from some of these top players if they go after them hard enough.

PG: Crater/Offutt
SG: Diebler/Buford (Offutt)
SF: Lighty/Turner (Wallace/Pryor?)
PF: Koufos/Wallace (Cam Heyward?)
C: Madsen/Lauderdale/Mullens

Now, obviously this isn't exactly a starter/backup depth chart, but just a roster and count for the positions and where guys can play.

As you can see, I added Cam Heyward as well. I don't know how good he really is, if he is solely a banger with no offensive game (which is what I assume) or has some touch around the rim or what, but he did say Matta and Tressel agreed he could try both sports. If Julius Peppers could do it as a DLman, maybe Cam can as well.

Nobody knows if Wallace can/will play at the 4. If KK is a one'n'done player, that suddenly makes PF awfully thin (aka empty)...

Madsen is much more of a PF than a C, but at this point would not be considered "starter material". Not quite empty, but closer to empty than full...

Hadn't said it yet, but good luck to Babbitt at Nevada! I'm absolutely sure he's receiving comparisons to Nick Fazekas over there.

I think Wallace could definitely play powerforward in our system. He's probably more of a powerforward than either Harris and maybe even Sullinger. He's tall, incredibly strong, and extremely athletic. Is he a shooter? No, but Sullinger wasn't really one either. He'll spread the floor not with his shot(though it remains to be seen just how good/bad a shooter he is), but rather with his speed and ability to slash.

I said it before. Lighty is sort of a SG/SF hybrid. Well, Wallace will be a SF/PF hybrid. Offutt will be a PG/SG hybrid. Just tons of versatility in our prospects.

Well this sucks...but is there any chance we just settle on the '08 class and try and add an extra '09 scholly? I agree with HotMic that Pryor wouldn't make up and I'm fine with that since Pryor will likely benefit the football team more than he would the basketball team. I also think there is no way we could get in the mix for Monroe. Good luck to Luke but it sucks he did this so out of left field or just didn't commit in the first place.

My guess is they will look for one in the 08' class...

THis could open the door for Matta to target a big name, but it might be a little late for that...

I also think that this makes PF a big priority in the 09' class...I think that SVT with the way his game has developed since his bout with mono earlier this year, he is going to be a name to keep an eye on...

This is a situation where we really need to hope that we can get two years out of KK...

Well crap. Good luck anyway. :(

I'll take a fairly candid and alternative stance here, I'm a little pissed. For months this guy has tied up a schollie and backs out now. I know he's a kid, but no one should make any commitment of this significance they aren't 100% on. Fairly selfish to wait this long to decommit IMHO.

It will be interesting to see if Matta can pull VT out of Indiana. I think those boys are starting to feel the pressure from their in-state people.
I would like to move the rest of the discussion to the B-Ball recruiting thread regarding other speculation.

Perhaps I see black helicopters circling, but what if Luke is not the one who initiated this? Is there a possibility Coach Matta knows something we all do not regarding a possible scholarship loss due to Greg Oden dropping his classes?

Regardless, I am not about to slam a young man who (after all) is making one of the biggest decisions of his life. He needs to go where he feels most comfortable.

Whoa! Easy with the accusations of "slamming." I'm declaring my irritation with the way he handled it, not the decision he made.
