'07 OH DE Ben Martin (Tennessee signee)

Today doesn't count. Martin has been OSU's to lose for quite awhile now, and not one Buckeye or national insider saw this coming.

This cannot be sugar coated, someone on the OSU staff dropped the ball here.

Wow...I can't believe this.

call it sour grapes if you want but I certainly don't trust any SEC schools when it comes to recruiting ethics

working in the FSU basketball athletic dept, i overheard one or two tidbits that were straight out of blue chips and cost us a recruit we thought we had in the bag

anyways, when a team gets in somewhat late and pulls a shocker like this, im a bit skeptical....again, maybe just sour grapes on my part

To add more to the conversation, I'll make what I knew public. I have a friend at LaSalle that knows Ben fairly well and has fed me what he knew for awhile. He said before leaving for the AA game, Ben seemed set on OSU but wasn't sure if he would announce then. Now I wouldn't take that for gospel but every insider was saying the same things and my friend had given me correct info all along the way (Ben's recruitment, his move to MLB, etc.). I think it only stands to reason that something drastic happened while down in San Antonio...it could be a number of things but I think what Eric Berry said to him may have made a big impact at first glance here. I would hope that this is premature but it doesn't sound like it. We definetly wanted Martin bad and there is no way to really sugar coat this as HotMic said. Yes we are loaded at DE luckily but it isn't about position need, it's about getting a top notch player that keeps the fences closed in Ohio. I think there is good reason why all of our insiders were off on this one...Ben just changed his mind last minute and there is no way you can predict that.

Well I can't get read it if it's premium anyways but if he did discuss that then, he did an excellent job of fooling everyone around him. My friend was sold on him going to OSU and maybe it was just to avoid to angry Ohioans if they found out. All reports around him pointed to OSU and nobody had Tennessee even on the radar, so my info wasn't the only like this...I just choose to let everyone in on what I heard. I can't vouch specifically for everyone else but I'm sure they had their reasons as well.

More updates about Martin

I spoke with both La Salle coach Tom Grippa and senior DE/LB Ben Martin for a few minutes on the phone tonight. Here are a few more insights:
  • Grippa said Martin decided to attend Tennessee after he discussed it with his mother, Mona Bell, on Christmas Day.
  • Martin is expected to make the announcement "public" during Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl from San Antonio. The game will be nationally-televised on NBC beginning at 1 p.m. Locally, it will be on Channel 5 (WLWT).
  • Martin said he didn't have much time to speak tonight, but said this of Tennessee: ?It was the place I felt comfortable (with),? Martin said. ?It was the best place for me.?
  • Martin (6-foot-5, 225 pounds) is rated the eighth-best defensive end nationally by Scout.com. He is rated the nation?s third-best strong-side defensive end and the No.2 player overall by Rivals.com.
  • Grippa said Martin significantly affected the La Salle defense. He moved to the linebacker position prior to this past season. ?He affected play-calling because of his presence,? Grippa said. ??He was a force out there. His speed was what made him have a special year. There?s no doubt Ben was one of the best players in Ohio.?

Breaking news: Martin commits to Tennessee

La Salle senior DE/LB Ben Martin has orally committed to play football at Tennessee, La Salle coach Tom Grippa told me by phone from his hotel in San Antonio, Texas a few minutes ago.

Martin, who will play in Saturday?s U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, is expected to officially make his decision live on national TV (NBC).

One of the most heavily recruited players in the country, Martin considered Notre Dame, Ohio State and Florida.

A first-team all-state and all-district selection, Martin was Greater Catholic League South player of the year. He had 112 tackles and seven sacks for the Lancers.

Not sure what to say....besides that I am not paid to contribute here.

Martin to UT....

Wow.

If its true...I'm surprised as it goes against everything since November.

If that's the case...so be it.

However, Im waiting for the announcement.....I Dont buy it.
