Elder outlasts rain, double OT
Elder 35, LaSalle 34
BY TOM GROESCHEN | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Years from now, tens of thousands of Elder football fans probably will claim they were there for this one.

The Panthers beat Greater Catholic League rival La Salle 35-34 in double overtime at Elder's Pit on Saturday night, in a thrilling game that actually began Friday night. The game was suspended in the second quarter Friday by thunderstorms.

"The people that came back sure got their money's worth," Elder coach Doug Ramsey said. "It means a lot to win, because we think all the GCL games this year will probably be close like this."

Elder (4-1, 1-0 GCL-S) is No. 4 in the Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll. La Salle (3-2, 0-1) is No. 7.

The Pit seats just more than 9,000 and had been filled Friday night. About 4,000 fans returned Saturday.

In the end Saturday, Elder's final score was a 2-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback John Groene to 6-foot-7 junior tight end Kyle Rudolph to start the second overtime. Ben Van Oflen's PAT kick made it 35-28, Elder.

La Salle then got the ball for its possession, as overtime rules give each team one possession starting at the other's 20-yard line.

La Salle scored on a 4-yard run by senior Billy Parker, cutting Elder's lead to 35-34. But then, La Salle's standout junior kicker Aaron Walter - 4-for-4 on PAT kicks to that point - hooked the PAT wide left.

That ended it, and Elder players and some students raced happily onto the field.

"The kids played their guts out," La Salle coach Tom Grippa said.

Rudolph used his height to catch three TD passes in the end zone. He caught six passes overall for 63 yards.

Quarterback Johnny Groene, a junior, completed 25 of 36 passes for 271 yards and four TDs, with one interception. He also rushed 24 times for 74 yards and a TD, as he made his first start in place of injured regular Derrick Ventre (broken hand).

"He made some plays. He's gutsy," Ramsey said of the 5-11, 160-pound Groene.

Elder junior wideout Nick Olthaus had nine catches for 130 yards and a TD. Elder's standout running back Pat Williams was limited to 25 yards on 12 carries.

The game was actually a defensive slugfest most of the way. The score was tied 7-7 entering the final five minutes of regulation, then each team erupted for 14 points in the final 4:13.

"It was hard coming back, after last night," Ramsey said. "You wonder how the kids will react. It took us a while to get going."

Elder defensive lineman Jeff Rieskamp led the defense with three sacks, and La Salle linebacker Ben Martin had 2? sacks.

La Salle junior wideout Devier Posey had six catches for 100 yards and a TD, and returned a kickoff 94 yards for a TD. La Salle's Vince Harris rushed 13 times for 60 yards. Lancers senior QB Brian Jacob was 15 of 22 for 193 yards and a TD.

La Salle football star chosen

Got a press release from the U.S. Army All-American Bowl (football) folks, saying their selection tour will visit La Salle on Tuesday to name a Lancer to the annual Army all-star game. The name is not listed, but I'll go out on a limb and say it will be linebacker Ben Martin.

The annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl will be televised live from the San Antonio Alamodome on NBC on Jan. 6, 2007 at 1 p.m.
