TROTWOOD ? Add C.J. Peake to the growing list of defensive backs from Trotwood-Madison High School to get Division I football scholarships.
The 6-foot-2, 212-pound safety has given a verbal commitment to the University of Wisconsin. He picked the Badgers, who went 11-1 this season, over Michigan State, Boston College, Tennessee, West Virginia and Louisville.
"I felt like Wisconsin was my best opportunity to come in and play right away," Peake said. "They lose four guys at safety. I liked the campus and was impressed by the facilities when I took my visit. They're always one of the best defensive teams in the country."
Peake, a first-team Division II All-Ohio pick, is ranked as the No. 3 safety in the state behind Eugene Clifford of Colerain and Nate Oliver of Lakewood St. Edward ? both headed for Ohio State. He's ranked No. 19 nationally by the Rivals.com Web site.
Peake is the fourth DB from Trotwood in the last three years to get a D-I full ride. Several other Rams safeties and cornerbacks went on to the Division II, III and NAIA levels after playing for T-M head coach Maurice Douglass, a former defensive back with the NFL's Chicago Bears.
"The hardest thing for me in college will probably be adjusting to the speed of the game," Peake said. "I'll have to improve my tackling and coverage, because everyone will be a lot bigger and faster."
Peake was recruited by Wisconsin offensive line coach Bob Palcic, a University of Dayton graduate who coached at Carroll High School and UD. Peake's host for his visit was defensive back Shane Carter, a sophomore from Troy.
Peake is one of five current Trotwood players to give verbals to D-I colleges. The others are wide receiver Myke Sawyer, cornerback Shawn Knight and safety Marcus English to Eastern Michigan, and linebacker Tyson Patrick to Toledo.
