'07 IL RB Robert Hughes (Notre Dame signee)

Rivals $

11/10

Senior film.

My take: Only 12 clips, but Robert shows good pad level and decent speed. Not sure that I would rate him above either Saine or Herron based on the film I've seen. He and Herron are similar style runners, with Hughes being much heavier and Boom being a step faster. Hughes is much more of a grind it out back...he is not going to beat a Big 10 DB to the corner. But he will earn you the tough yards inside and will ocasionally show and open-field move or two. A solid back, no doubt...but I am happy with the two we have on board this year.

I agree on everything you said, I just think that his vision has to be mentioned somewhere. I think that is making him a highly rated recruit.

Good point...which is kind of what I meant by saying he and Boom are similar backs. Both rely on their vision to make them so good...neither has world class speed and neither is just a Beanie-type wrecking ball. But both show good balance and great vision. Like I said, the biggest difference is Hughes looks about 20-25 lbs. heavier, while Boom looks a step faster and a touch more agile with his cuts.

Robert keeps his cleats in the ground..that is good. However, he doesn't have that burst that separates the premiere backs. He will be a good back for a grinding offense, but I do not see him as a featured threat. Not sure how much ceiling he has left...

Exactly...

Hubbard advances in Public playoffs

By Steve Reaven
Special to the Tribune

Driving rain and a stiff wind made Hubbard's offensive gameplan very vanilla, but very effective, in its 24-6 Public League playoff win Wednesday night over Dunbar at Gately Stadium.

The Greyhounds (11-3) used the awful weather conditions to their advantage, unleashing a punishing ground attack, which churned out 290 yards and was employed on 50 of their 52 offensive plays.

"The weather was messed up and the footing was bad, but running the ball like that was fun," said Hubbard's 6' 5", 310-pound left tackle Keith Otis.

Senior running back Robert Hughes led the way with 27 carries for 182 yards. His 1-yard scoring run and a 13-yard halfback option pass to De'Andre Mosley with 42 seconds left in the second quarter lifted Hubbard to a 14-0 halftime lead.

Hubbard's running game became even more dominant after halftime. A 12-play, 80-yard drive to open the second half elapsed more than half of the third quarter on 12 straight running plays and was capped by Hughes' 9-yard scoring plunge. After a Dunbar three-and-out, the Greyhounds answered with 12 more consecutive runs, ending with a 37-yard Juan Coria field goal with 5 minutes 54 seconds left and a 24-0 cushion.

Dunbar (8-6) had a 62-yard pass play from Ceasar Davis to Stephin Williams on the game's last play to avert the shutout.

The Hubbard victory sets up Sunday's matchup against Morgan Park, with the winner earning a trip to the Prep Bowl at Soldier Field next Friday against the Catholic League champion.

"Getting this far is a tremendous accomplishment. The Prep Bowl has been around longer than the state playoffs," said Hughes. "It's an honor to still be playing, knowing that other seniors are done with high school football for the rest of their lives."
