'06 MN DT Walker Ashley (Minny...no, maybe USC......no, PSU...no, Minnesota commit)

Wow, talk about coming out of left field. That is some news. This young man has some great potential. It sure looks as if he doesn't make it throughthe clearinghouse which frees him from the SC LOI. This would be a huge get.
This has been posted on another board by several very reliable posters also.....we will see how this plays out.

wow... that's some interesting news...

but how can he enroll at Ohio State if he doesn't have the grades?
does this mean that he will walk on, and if so, who's to say whether he gets accepted at Ohio State? or does he need like one class that he could take at a JUCO to get through the clearinghouse?

i'm a little foggy on the rules...

Walker Ashley has eligibility question marks

Freshman defensive tackle Walker Ashley, who picked USC over the Gophers, is considered a "long shot" to be academically certified by the NCAA Clearinghouse, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. Under NCAA rules, Ashley, a prep All-American from Eden Prairie, will be allowed to practice for two weeks without Clearinghouse approval. If he does not get certification, he cannot attend school and must sit out the season.

Walker Ashley was expected to add depth to the defensive tackle spot, which is the Trojans' biggest question mark following the departure of All-Americans Shaun Cody and Mike Patterson and the recently departed Emmanual Wright, who entered the NFL's supplemental draft.

Ashley was considered the state's top prospect and was named Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year. Ashley, who led the Eagles to a 10-1 record this season, picked the Trojans over Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State and Oklahoma. Ashley played every position on the defensive line and led the Eagles in sacks. He was also an All-Metro first-team pick last season.

Ashley is the son of former Minnesota Viking and Penn State Nittany Lion Walker Lee Ashley.

There had been some talk that Ashley might want to play closer to home and would consider playing for the Gophers.

Sounds like a good possibility he'll be playing somewhere in the midwest.

He'd have to demonstrate a lot of improvement in his grades before being allowed to transfer in. This year, the staff has been a lot stricter about who they offer in terms of grades, and I think it would apply to him too. Tho it sure would be great to land a player like him, given our need at DT for the future.

he would definately address a need on the DL we will have in the near future.....however our admissions dept. and APR situation makes me skeptiical even if there was serious interest by Ashley that this would actually happen, given that he is having trouble enrolling at USC.

i've heard rumor that it is a core course he is missing and that his test score and GPA are manageable. if that's the case, then he could take the class at a JUCO this fall and enroll in the winter without too much hassle i would think.

I can just see BN going apeshit over this one. Maybe I should go back over there and introduce a game I invented, it may be perfect in this type of situation

Shaker... while you are probably right on the money... Clearinghouse issues are different than admissions issues. Interestingly, the minimum core courses for admission for Ohio State lists 13 required types of courses... the NCAA now has 14... so it could be an issue like that.

Of course, none of that takes GPA and test scores into consideration, and that seems more likely to be the problem, though I wouldn't want to speculate.

I guess my point is, with the clearinghouse, you almost don't want to assume what the problem might be... even though it seems like if yuo had problem with the clearinghouse, you would also have problems gaining admission to OSU or USC... its not always the case... and it seems like if USC is letting him practice, he's not necessarily having admissions issues with them, but again... I'm speculating. (Of course, on the flip side, if you get through the clearinghouse okay, you might have admissions issues anyway... see a certain OT from NC, I believe)

At any rate... I guess we'll see what happens.

I'll believe this one when I see it...this situation has happened numerous times before and never come to fruition.
man...what a buzz kill. lets start the madness back up...

I heard from a friend who was at his buddies house while they were online checking internet message boards, and he said he saw somebody quote a reliable source who said he talked to somebody that saw Walker signing up for classes for the Winter.
