'06 FL OLB/TE Colin McCarthy (Miami Signee)

Care to elaborate on why you think he was having problems taking on the block? How did you come to that conclusion?

Sure. I watched the entire game and pretty much concentrated on McCarthy. McCarthy was alternating series with another kid, so he was not in there as much as some of the other players.

The OL was getting to McCarthy right where he lined up. IOW, he was not stepping up to take on the block or scraping off the block on outside plays. This was very noticeable as a number of running plays went right up the middle and right past McCarthy. In most schemes the minimum you want out of the Mike is to take on a lead blocker in the hole, but McCarthy was not stepping up and was catching the blocker most times. Later in the game, McCarthy was a bit more effective because he was shooting the gap on the snap. I have no way of knowing whether the staff was calling run blitzes for the Mike or McCarthy was doing that on his own. He certainly was not reading a key because he literally would shoot the A gap at the snap.

McCarthy did not look strong to me, which may not be surprising given that his weight was listed at 205 or 210 (can't remember) on the game broadcast. That is quite a bit lighter than the 225 I see mentioned. He looked to me to have good, not great quickness. I didn't see him go lateral enough to form an opinion on his lateral quickness.

Frankly, he reminded me somewhat of Moeller, although Moeller made many more plays in the games I watched. Then again, McCarthy was playing an unfamiliar position against an O line probably better than any Moeller faced. Based on this game, and this game only, I am ambivalent on McCarthy. I am sure the staff has seen a lot more video of him in his natural position, so if they want him I am all for it. He just isn't a MLB at this stage, though.

I didn't watch the game, but I currently play the Mike position on defence. It is nearly impossible (especially against very good linemen) to make a play on the ball if the DT does not hold the lineman going to the ball or atleast make a concentrated effort to get in his way...I don't know but maybe thats what was happening.

Either way, he is projected to be an OLB so why worry?

McCarthy-Spitler-Homan in a few years. Should be quite a trio. Tons of strength inside and tons of speed outside.

Umm, not sure about that trio... but Freeman - Johnson - Homan would be what I would like to see in 2 years, with Laurinaitis, Hoobler, McCarthy, Moeller, Terry, Spitler... etc. backing them up.

Rivals $ (Florida site)

Florida site recruiting news & notes. Says McCarthy and UF commit Jim Barrie were at the Outback bowl watching the Gators and Hawkeyes. McCarthy said it was just to see a good game, and that he was down to Miami, GA Tech, and tOSU. Larry Coker is due in to visit Colin in the next week, as are coaches from tOSU and GA Tech. Colin expects to have a decision ready for announcement by next Friday.

A poster claiming to go to school with Colin says he will be committing to Miami tomorrow. I love how these recruits claim OSU is a leader for so long, then change their mind so quickly. This will make Mark Johnson and Thad Gibson that more important.

I love how people believe posters who claim to go to school with recruits....

At this point, it is difficult to judge the level of mutual interest between Ohio State and Colin McCarthy.
