'06 FL OLB/TE Colin McCarthy (Miami Signee)

I love how people believe posters who claim to go to school with recruits....

At this point, it is difficult to judge the level of mutual interest between Ohio State and Colin McCarthy.

just my view on things.

first off, a lot of people that have been pretty accurate in the past are still calling mccarthy to osu. secondly, the kid that is his supposed teammate/friend still says he has no clue where he is going. I also wonder about a high school kid that has 900 posts on the rivals main board.

also, mccarthy had stated all along that he would make an announcement after returning from the cali/fl all star game. the timing issue doesnt seem to be much of a factor.

the mutual interest comment is interesting. it does seem that perhaps osu hasnt really gone after him full bore as of late. that could just be my perception. maybe thad gibson coming back into play is a factor.

Just out of curiosity:
How big of a miss is McArthy if he does indeed commit to Miami?

Keeping in mind what LJB said about "mutual interest", if the staff has cooled on McArthy then it's not a big miss at all because they obviously have someone else in mind, right? Unless McArthy told them before, "If Miami offers then that's where I'm headed." Could that be the reason that Ohio State cooled on him (if they in fact did cool on him)?

I don't think it's that big of a miss, I'd wish him good luck. We've got Moeller (if he plays LB in college) and Homan. And maybe we get Gibson and/or Johnson, assuming grades won't be a factor for either. IMHO we have enough outside linebackers, I'd prefer our next LB get to be a little bigger.

McCarthy was suppose to come visit OSU one more time unofficialy. Did he make it up north? Maybe this is sign of his future decision as well.

I think if you look at our LB recruiting right now, it's pretty obvious that Thad Gibson is our #1 OLB. McCarthy would be a great player to have, but if getting a verbal right now from him means no more room for Gibson, the coaches might be hesitant to do that. Not that McCarthy isn't an excellent player, if the coaches do go a little lukewarm on him, it would be because they think they have a shot at Gibson.

I don't think Johnson has anything to do with the offer for McCarthy. Johnson will be a MLB and McCarthy an OLB. I would say the offer to McCarthy has everything to do with Gibson and Gibson alone. I don't see why we don't take all 5 if we can and just red-shirt a couple of them for seperation? If we don't take them then I hope we have alot more verbals on the way.

For those that worry about us taking too many LB's, etc. Remember that you can NEVER have enough big, athletic kids as they can stay at LB (as I think Colin would) or they can be moved to TE, FB, DE. With that being said I see Colin coming in as an OLB recruit and a great one at that. So if news is true this could be the beginning of a great recruiting end (Rose, Small, Colin M, Dublin ??, etc)
