Selwyn Lymon
Harding, senior
15.8 ppg., 8.7 rpg., 1.0 bpg.
Despite some gaudy statistics last year, Selwyn Lymon doesn’t consider himself to be a great basketball player. He sees himself more as a great athlete who plays basketball.
“It’s fun for me to play basketball because I was always tall,” the 6-5 post player said. “Everyone always said, ‘You’re tall, you must play basketball.’ Then I’d tell them and they’d look at me and say, ‘Oh, you play football?’”
Lymon is better known for football, but he’s also very good as a basketball player, mostly because of his leaping ability. Lymon can dunk with two hands and has been able to dunk since he was in eighth grade.
His leg strength comes from workouts with his father, Terry, who is a power lifter. They started working out together three times a week in their basement when Selwyn was in eighth grade.
“I used to always watch him do it, and one day he asked me if I wanted to get in there,” Selwyn said.
“I didn’t think it was fun with my dad because he took it so serious, but now it’s fun if you are doing it with a friend and it’s helping you out. If you keep being negative about it, you’re going to do it less and less.”
Lymon can bench-press more than 300 pounds. He’ll need that strength to battle inside this season.
“Now hopefully they can’t keep me out as easily,” he said.
