Ft. Wayne (Harding) wide receiver Selwyn Lymon has every school from coast to coast wanting his services. Harding head coach Sherwood Haydock talks about his prized prospects and takes a stab at the leaders for his services.
Selwyn Lymon, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound wide receiver from Ft. Wayne (Ind.) Harding is one of the most sought after prospects in the Midwest.
Lymon didn’t start his 2004 season the way he had planned, with a 65-7 loss to rival Snider High School but Lymon and his teammates rebounded this past Friday night with a big win.
Lymon has 164 yards receiving in two games but with an inexperienced quarterback at the controls for Harding in 2004, Selwyn’s numbers won’t be as gaudy as other top receivers.
“You just can’t look at the numbers,” said Harding head coach Sherwood Haydock. “You can’t recruit stats. We’re talking about a kid (Lymon) that’s 6-foot-5 and 194-pounds with 4.4 speed and a 300-pound bench press.
“As a junior, Selwyn averaged 24-yards per catch and he didn’t know how to be a receiver yet. This year, Selwyn has learned how to be a receiver. He uses his body, speed and jumping ability extremely well.
“A lot of times you’ll see a football player that runs track. Selwyn is a track start that plays football. The coaches who came through here in the spring just marveled at Selwyn’s stride and fluidness on the track. He’s just so smooth.
“Selwyn’s best attributes are his work ethic, his leadership and what he does after he makes the catch. After Selwyn catches the football, there had better be someone right there to take him down. If not, he’ll take it the distance every time.”
Lymon has several scholarship offers. There isn’t a single Big Ten school that hasn’t offered Selwyn a scholarship. We asked coach Haydock if Selwyn has a leader?
“Right now I’d say it’s Purdue with Michigan #2 and Ohio State third. Michigan is actually closer to Ft. Wayne than Purdue is but coach (Joe) Tiller over at Purdue was the first school to come in and offer Selwyn a scholarship.
“Actually I’ve been quite impressed with Purdue. Coach Tiller could have been out closing the deal with his ’04 recruiting class or visiting other seniors and he chose to come to our school to see Selwyn.
“Selwyn and I sat in Coach (Lloyd) Carr’s office over at Michigan and we were very impressed with coach Carr and his staff.
“I know Michigan is high on Selwyn’s list and he’s always been a big Charles Woodson fan.
“We don’t know much about Ohio State. Selwyn will probably visit there for a game during the season and he’s talking about an official visit as well.
“I’m sure he’ll visit Purdue and Michigan. I don’t know if he’ll take his last two visits.”
Lymon and his harding teammates will try and get above the .500 mark this Friday night against Elmhurst High School.
