'05 CA OL Kevin Bemoll (California signee)

First of all, we have a ton of prospect possibilities at other more needed positions (rather than OL where we are currently stacked).

Second, perhaps the NCAA will come forth and give the buckeyes a green light of some sort for their initial report, and it will be in time to assure recruits like Ashley and Bemoll that we are gonna be clean.

Plus this kid really didn't like the idea of being so far from home.

it looks like the distance from home is the real factor and the ncaa allegations are a scapegoat.

the kids top 5 this summer were miami, osu, florida,ou and lsu. now he isnt considering any of those, and he's looking at oregon and the cal bears. his teammate and good friend isnt concerned in the least bit by the allegations, yet bemoll is so concerned he decommits? looks more like a case of cold feet.

Maybe Bemoll wants to play early and looking at the OL right now, the recruits that came in last year, and this class that might not be likely. That has changed since the line looked like Swiss cheese most of the year. Boone is going to get a head start on all of the others and is rated higher than Bemoll. We already have Sims, Downing, Mangold, Datish, and Barton coming back next year with starting experience. I would love to see Kevin change his mind and become a Buckeye, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. It takes a special kind of person to be willing to go to college that far from home. I loved only being a hour away from home when I was in college. Just far enough that I could go home whenever I wanted but far enough that I didn't feel that I was still at home. Maybe Petey had Kevin talk to Freddy about homesickness. :p

I was a lot more upset last night in my beer fog. It didn't help that USC looks unbeatable and they get everyone back next year. I'm kind of over it now. I'm glad that he didn't just turn tail on signing day, but who do you go after now? Does the team settle for Cordle and Boone (exceptional O linemen, but I think they needed to sign more than two) or do you go after someone else?

I'd feel better if he would come out and say "It's just too far from home." I think the speculation is that he's worried about the Troy Smith thing. That could have an effect on other recruits, whereas if he's just worried about the distance, that's understandable.

I love this site because the recruiting talk is rational and not insane. I was over on bucknuts trying to talk buki919 off the ledge yesterday. He's expressing betrayal towards Bemoll.

Good luck K. Bemoll, if you don't pick the Bucks. Do what's in your best interest (which we hope is to be a Buckeye), this is not a decision you get to make throughout your life. Good Luck and Go Bucks!

Maybe the staff knew this last week and this coupled with the Pettrey gray-shirt was the 2 more openings we had been hearing about.

I am sad to see him decommit but I cant fault the kid - he is putting faith in something that may not be there when/after he gets there. Couple that with there being 3000 miles away from his family and I can see why he would make this decision. Do I agree with his concern, no, but I understand it.

OTOH I have heard/read that the OL class for '06 is phenomenal, especially in OH. I suspect we give this scholly to someone else this year [another RB, CB or LB] or pocket it for next year. It all depends on how the next 5+ weeks go.

I can understand a recruit in CA getting cold feet based on all the stuff being said. Again, I think ESPN has been shameless in its attack on OSU. The Alamo Bowl coverage was a disgrace. Mark May and Trev Alberts have abolutely no sense, let alone class. I do not believe there is a lack of institutional control and I do not believe OSU will be place on any type of probation. The problem is, it doesn't matter what my perception is, the perceptions of the recruits matter most.

I fear the perception among undecided or teetering recruits is that OSU is an uncertain place to be right now. The last 2 classes have been quite strong though not spectacular like the 2002 class. Coincidentally or not, most of the 2002 guys were originally Cooper recruits. What's my point? It is not unlikely that OSU will finish with a whimper instead of a bang in February. The last 2 signing days haven't been kind and we lost Bemoll yesterday. I don't see a mass exodus or anything, but I fear the worst with Ashley, Wells, Wilson, McCoy. I'm sure staff is working extremely hard to ease any concerns the recruits may have. Things just seem to be up in the air, this class could be anywhere from top 5 to not in the top 10.

I can't say that I blame the kid for not wanting to travel over 3000 miles away from home to go to school, that would be very tough. Look at the Fred Davis situation now, Bemoll probably doesn't want to be caught in the middle like Davis is now. I highly doubt that this has anything to do with Troy Smith.

CriticalSteve, I doubt he'll even consider how we finish...it looks like he may have some personal issues which are making want to stay closer to home. He probably won't care how high or low we rank in recruiting ratings (which mean garbage anyways).

i wonder if personal issues = girlfriend.

zuttah chose rutgers last year over osu primarily because his girlfriend went there.
