C&G Top 30 (California) USCFootball.com | last sorted on 1/3/2005
The top 30 players in the state of California. These rankings were compiled by USCFootball.com.
Name Pos. Rating Ht/Wt Hometown Schools
1 Marlon Lucky RB 6-0/202 North Hollywood (CA) Nebraska
Maybe the best running back prospect in the nation. Reminds us of former Bronco great Terrell Davis.
2 Rey Maualuga LB 6-2/253 Eureka (CA) list
He can destroy lead blocks or run down a play from the inside out. Naturally powerful.
3 DeSean Jackson WR 5-11/170 Long Beach (CA) Poly list
Poly players get labeled as raw, but Jackson is as polished as they come. A real ankle breaker too.
4 Luthur Brown LB 6-3/227 Lakewood (CA) list
A smart football player who reads plays fast and takes good pursuit angles.
5 Mark Sanchez QB 6-4/211 Mission Viejo (CA) Southern Cal
A much more mobile quarterback than he gets credit for. Gives him some upside.
6 Averell Spicer DE 6-2/260 Rancho Cucamonga (CA) Southern Cal
Throws the shot-put 58' and shows that power on initial contact with blockers.
7 Erik Lorig TE 6-4/250 Rolling Hills Estates (CA) Peninsula list
Peninsula doesn't throw the ball much, so we don't assume he'll play offense in college.
8 Will Harris DB 6-3/195 Covina (CA) Charter Oak Southern Cal
Harris has the potential to play corner if he can get faster. A good cover man, but not super physical.
9 Charles Brown OL 6-6/249 Pomona (CA) Diamond Ranch Southern Cal
We project him as a tackle, but if he can get his 40-time down, he could play tight end.
10 Kevin Thomas DB 6-0/166 Oxnard (CA) Rio Mesa Southern Cal
A bit light under the pads, but very aggressive and smart around the ball.
11 Aleksey Lanis OL 6-5/313 Los Angeles (CA) Crenshaw UCLA
A smart, hard-nosed blocker with a very nasty streak to him. Also has a 3.8 GPA.
12 Syd'Quan Thompson ATH 5-9/178 Sacramento (CA) Grant California
Returning Junior Player of the Year. Thompson is a great return man as well as a top corner.
13 Jeremy Childs WR 6-0/180 Los Alamitos (CA) UCLA
Has the hands of USC's Steve Smith, but not quite as tough or agile.
14 Austin Usher WR 6-2/195 Los Angeles (CA) Jefferson list
Not quite as tall as his original listing, but still has a great frame and good speed.
15 Aaron Ware ATH 6-0/180 Westlake Village (CA) Oaks Christian UCLA
Still labeled as an "athlete", but he'll probably end up playing running back in college.
16 Robert Peele DB 6-0/180 Fresno (CA) Edison list
Peele moved from safety to corner this year and looks to have found a permanent home.
17 Cary Harris DB 6-1/180 Sherman Oaks (CA) Notre Dame list
Cary has great field presence, but his vitals are unconfirmed. Claims a 10.7 100m.
18 Kevin Bemoll OL 6-5/295 Mission Viejo (CA) Ohio State
Bemoll is bigger than former Diablo tackle, Drew Radovich, but not as athletic.
19 Bret Lockett ATH 6-2/188 Diamond Bar (CA) list
Bret has legit 4.5 speed with a 190lb frame. He's also a leader and tireless worker.
20 Rodney Picou OL 6-4/299 Moreno Valley (CA) Canyon Springs Nebraska
Picou drops this far because of grades. Otherwise, he's rated the best guard prospect in California.
21 Brandis Dew ATH 6-5/248 Hemet (CA) Hemet Texas-El Paso
Dew has the arm to play QB, but his physical skills may be better severed on the line.
22 Matt Kopa DE 6-6/268 Elk Grove (CA) Elk Grove Stanford
Made a big splash at the Palo Alto Nike Camp. More likely an offensive tackle in college.
23 David Gettis WR 6-4/198 Los Angeles (CA) Dorsey list
Recently ran a 21.50 200m and a 46.39 400m in track. His ranking could jump this summer.
24 George Hypolite RB 6-3/245 Los Angeles (CA) Loyola list
Hypolite is a very versatile fullback who is capable of making plays with the ball in his hands.
25 Nick Howell OL 6-5/253 Fresno (CA) Bullard Southern Cal
A name on the rise, Howell has a lot of the same upside Charles Brown does, but he's not as athletic.
26 Michael Shelton DE 6-3/211 Compton (CA) Dominguez Arizona
Known for his skills on the hardwood, Shelton is starting to realize his talents on the gridiron.
27 Prince Hall LB 6-0/239 Moreno Valley (CA) Alabama
At 240lbs, Hall actually ran back kicks for Moreno Valley; scoring on kickoff returns of 88 and 92 yards!
28 Michael Coleman ATH 6-2/225 San Bernardino (CA) Arroyo Valley Southern Cal
Coleman is a tremendous overall athlete, but where he plays at the next level remains open to debate.
29 Edward Dickson TE 6-6/225 Bellflower (CA) list
Dickson is still pretty lean, so he could put on another 20lbs of muscle before his freshmen year in college.
30 Roberto Wallace WR 6-4/203 Oceanside (CA) San Diego St.
Derek Shaw gets the hype, but the best athlete in Oceanside is Wallace. His upside is tremendous.
