The Buckeyes fell short on Sunday against the Illini, losing the series.

A late rally for Ohio State baseball ultimately came up short on Sunday as the Buckeyes lost to Illinois by a score of 5-3. With the win, the Illini claimed the series victory, and pulled to .500 in Big Ten play.

A home run by Ohio State's Craig Nennig to lead off the ninth inning against Illinois closer Nick Blackburn pulled the Buckeyes to within two. A single by Jacob Bosiokovic and a double by Jalen Washington put the tying run in scoring position with one out, but Blackburn buckled down and retired Troy Montgomery and Ryan Leffel to end it.

Ohio State is now 5-7 in conference games, and faces an uphill battle to earn a berth in the Big Ten tournament.

The Illini's freshman starter Cole Bellair kept the Ohio State bats very quiet, as he yielded just a run on five hits in 7.1 innings of work. The right-hander improved to 2-2 while walking one and striking out four.

Buckeye left fielder Ronnie Dawson continued to swing a hot bat, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs on the day. Dawson extended his hitting streak to nine games and reached-safely streak to 17.

Starter Adam Niemeyer allowed five earned runs on six hits in 6.2 innings, walking two and striking out six. A two-run first inning and a three-run seventh proved to be Niemeyer's undoing, as he fell to 3-2 on the year.

Illinois wasted no time in scoring against Niemeyer. Leadoff man Jack Yalowitz singled and Doran Turchin followed that right up with an RBI triple to right center. Next up, Jason Goldstein sent a groundball out to Craig Nennig at shortstop and Turchin came home for the early 2-0 lead.

Dawson gave the Buckeyes their first run of the day with his solo shot to left in the top of the sixth, which made it a 2-1 game at the time.

In the bottom of the seventh, though, the Illini broke it open. A bases loaded double by Yalowitz brought three runs plateward and ended Niemeyer's day.

It was Dawson who again came through for Ohio State in the eighth, driving in Montgomery with a double off Illinois reliever J.D. Nielsen that short-hopped the wall in left-center.

There is no midweek game for the Buckeyes this week. They'll be on the field again on Friday in West Lafayette to kick off a conference series with Purdue.

LGHL What if Ohio State's depth chart was determined by recruiting rankings?

What if Ohio State's depth chart was determined by recruiting rankings?

usa-today-9030266.0.jpg

If Urban Meyer and the other coaches were just lazy and started the most talented recruits, what would that depth chart look like?

With spring practice, the record-setting spring game, and "The Land of the Wolves" in full effect, the depth chart heading in to the summer got a little clearer.

Sure, some summer enrollees may shake things up and there are still some notable battles that will continue throughout summer practice and fall camp, but the depth chart at a few key position groups was mostly clarified.

With so many holes in the lineup due to a potentially record-setting NFL Draft class, the spring was critically important for a number of new starters. Nowhere was that more true than on the offensive line, where it looks like true freshman early enrollee Michael Jordan has found himself in front of likely starter Demetrius Knox (who is a former blue-chipper himself). At linebacker, Chris Worley appears to have held off Jerome Baker (for now) at WILL, while Dante Booker has slid right in to the SAM slot formerly manned by Joshua Perry. And in the secondary, where only Gareon Conley returns to a starting role, former three-star safety Malik Hooker looks to be the best of the group.

On offense, Bri’onte Dunn and Mike Weber are locked in an "OR" fight right now for the top spot (though Weber is thought to be trending up), and the backup quarterback spot belongs to Joe Burrow, at least until Dwayne Haskins arrives on campus this summer.

The two-deep may be taking shape for the summer. But how would the depth chart look if the coaches just immediately put the most talented recruits in to the starting roles? I took a look at the Buckeyes roster by position group, ranking the top players in to a two-deep to see how it compares with the penciled-in two-deep heading in to the summer. I looked at the 247 Composite scores for the recruit rankings below.

Cornerback

1 Marshon Lattimore, So. (.9729) Eric Glover-Williams, So. (.9499)
2 Gareon Conley, Jr. (.9322) Denzel Ward, So. (.9021)

It looks like the second-stringers talent-wise could actually be the starting lineup in the fall. According to various reports, the staff would love for Marshon Lattimore to claim the spot, but injuries have slowed his career down so far. Denzel Ward, reportedly the fastest player on the team, would likely be the top option opposite Conley right now.

Safeties

1 Damon Webb, So. (.982) Cam Burrows, Jr. (.9719)
2 Erick Smith, Jr. (.9665) Malik Hooker, So. (.8858)

The only mostly sure thing right now is that Malik Hooker will be one of the two starting safeties -- but there was a huge gap between him and the other three safeties in the two-deep according to high school recruiting rankings. So is this another diamond in the rough like Tyvis Powell?

Defensive End

1 Nick Bosa, Fr. (.9965) Jonathon Cooper, Fr. (.9801)
2 Jalyn Holmes, So. (.9622) Sam Hubbard, So. (.9230)

Thought to be one of the most talent-rich parts of the team despite losing Joey Bosa and Adolphus Washington, incoming freshmen Nick Bosa and Jonathon Cooper bump the projected starters at defensive end. Last year's sack leader Tyquan Lewis didn't make the top four, but his projected counterpart Sam Hubbard, and likely rotational player Jalyn Holmes did. The question for the summer and fall will likely be whether these two five-star recruits can get up to speed to hit the rotation by the beginning of the season.

Defensive Tackle

1 Jashon Cornell, Fr. (.9530) Dre'Mont Jones, Fr. (.9350)
2 Michael Hill, Jr. (.9240) Malik Barrow, Fr. (.8890)

In contrast to defensive end, defensive tackle doesn't quite have the same star power. Jason Cornell moved inside, which gives this group a significant boost, but the two-deep would still be full of players who haven't seen much, if any, playing time. Tracy Sprinkle was a former three-star, while his counterpart Michael Hill is the highest-rated non-freshman in this two-deep.

Linebacker

1 Raekwon McMillian, Jr. (.9894) Justin Hilliard, Fr. (.9817) Dante Booker, Jr. (.9721)
2 Jerome Baker, So. (.9646) Keandre Jones, Fr. (.9540) Nick Conner, Fr. (.9116)

If any group has completely changed since Urban Meyer took over (when Zach Boren moved from fullback to linebacker!), it's this group of linebackers. Easily one of the most talent-rich two-deeps on the team, the linebackers are extremely talented and mostly veterans. Two likely starters post-spring appear in this two-deep too, while the likely third starter at WILL, Chris Worley, is in a battle to hold off Jerome Baker. Incoming elite recruit Keandre Jones continues the trend of blue-chippers who will have to wait their turn at linebacker.

Offensive Line

1 Jamarco Jones, Jr. (.9696) Evan Lisle, Jr. (.9646) Demetrius Knox, So. (.9518) Isaiah Prince, So. (.9488) Matthew Burrell, Fr. (.9484)
2 Michael Jordan, Fr. (.9389) Malcom Pridgeon, Jr. (.9328) Tyler Gerald, Fr. (.9277) Billy Price, Jr. (.9155) Kyle Trout, So. (.9010)

The offensive line had to be almost entirely rebuilt apart from Price and Elflein -- but Elflein didn't even crack the top-ten most talented offensive line recruits for this two-deep. Obviously this group of ten doesn't specify the position, but it's an extremely talented group nonetheless (Ohio State has over ten players who were four-star or higher on the offensive line!). Notable is that Michael Jordan, a second-stringer here, looks at least neck-and-neck with the much more experienced Demetrius Knox for a guard spot. The two likely starting tackles, Isaiah Prince and Jamarco Jones, were also among the top four most talented linemen in high school.

Running Back

1 Mike Weber, Fr. (.9584)
2 Bri'onte Dunn, Sr. (.9537)

It's close in real life and close in the recruiting rankings, but Mike Weber edges out the veteran Bri'onte Dunn here for the starting running back spot. Can either player handle the feature back role? Especially with J.T. Barrett likely challenging for the most rushing yards next season (along with H-Backs stealing carries) the division of touches for the ground game will be interesting to watch.

Tight End

1 Marcus Baugh, Jr. (.9597)
2 Jake Hausmann, Fr. (.9416)

Ohio State has also begun to really stockpile tight ends. With two on the roster and two more coming in (not to mention the recent walk-on graduate transfer from Notre Dame), the Buckeyes look to be in good shape. Urban Meyer and Tim Hinton and given Buckeye tight end recruits plenty to NFL Draft success to entice them to commit (Stoneburner, Herman, and Vannett), but can Baugh live up to his recruiting hype?

Quarterback

1 Dwayne Haskins, Fr. (.9550)
2 J.T. Barrett, Jr. (.9348)

Sorry, J.T., but this two-deep would have you demoted in favor of incoming freshman Dwayne Haskins. Funny enough, Haskins might be one of the most talented quarterbacks Urban has ever recruited.

Wide Receiver

1 Demario McCall, Fr. (.9761) Curtis Samuel, Jr. (.9695) Dontre Wilson, Sr. (.9685)
2 Johnnie Dixon, Jr. (.9639) Austin Mack, Fr. (.9613) Torrance Gibson, Fr. (.9584)

Do you think Urban has had much success selling recruits on "being the next Percy Harvin?" The top three wide receivers are all H-Backs (I lumped them with the other wide receivers), showing that that promise sells more than the actual past production from Buckeye H-Backs. Here's to hoping that Curtis Samuel makes this the year when we really see the Ohio State offense incorporate these speedsters into the system. Otherwise, there's a lot of exciting young talent out there for the Buckeyes to use on the outside -- highlighted by freshman Austin Mack and redshirt freshman Torrance Gibson.

The Big Ten Tournament is this weekend. Here’s recap of round 1.

As a refresher, the participating players participating were: Will Grimmer, Tee-k Kelly, Clark Engle, Josh Wick and Grant Weaver. This has been the core lineup for coaches Moseley and Smith for most of the season.

2nd Round

The Buckeyes got solid performances from Will Grimmer and Josh Wick. The youth played well in the opening round. By the end of the round, the team score of 296 (+8) and maintained their position in 9th place. They are 5 strokes behind Northwestern (might be able to catch them) and 8 strokes in front of Indiana (not like to be caught from behind).

The Buckeyes were led by Tee-K Kelly 71 (-1) and Will Grimmer 73 (+1). Josh Wick 75 (+3) and Clark Engle 77 (+5) finished the team scoring. Grant Weaver shot an 81 (+9).

The Buckeyes, teeing off on #10, had a very solid team score of +2 on their opening 9 holes. However, on their back nine, 1 more double bogey and 2 fewer birdies bumped up the back 9 total. See, it doesn’t take much, possibly 3 bad swings/bounces to have an impact on a round. It happens.

Player scores, below:

Big Ten Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Total
Team 298 296 0 594
Will Grimmer 70 73 0 143
Tee-k Kelly 76 71 0 147
Clark Engle 79 77 0 156
Josh Wick 74 75 0 149
Grant Weaver 78 81 0 159
To Par 10 8 0 0

Tee-K birdied his 6th and 7th holes to go to -2 for his first nine holes, stumbled with double bogey on his 12th hole. He closed out strong with a birdie on his last hole to cap a closing 6 hole stretch of -1. Great golf.

Will was kind of “OK” at +2 through his first 5 holes. Then, wow. He played the final 13 holes in -1 for a very strong finish. Nice work.

Josh carded 4 birdies, but 2 doubles dulled his round. He did birdie 2 of his last three holes, so hopefully some momentum was built for Sunday.

Clark strung together a total of 14 pars for the day, but his 2 double bogeys really stalled his round.

Grant got into trouble on his opening nine holes, shooting +7. However, he did respond with 3 birdies on the back nine to shoot +2 for that span. For the second consecutive round, he did finish with a birdie on his last hole.

This actually wasn’t that bad of a round. They were probably only 3-4 swings from having very solid round and being 1-2 spots higher. They are positioned to make a move up 2 positions, but they need to avoid the “big numbers”. Not profound, but factual. Tee-K, Will and Josh are putting together a good showing. They need a 4th player to step up on Sunday.

The Buckeyes put together a round of 16 birdies (5 more than 1st round), 49 pars, 17 bogeys and 8 double bogeys.

Over two rounds, Ohio State played the par 3’s to an average of 3.30, 12 over par, ranking T-9th. They played the par 4’s to an average of 4,28, +28 to par, ranking them 9th. They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.85, -6 to par, ranking them T-3rd.

Ohio State had 105 pars, ranking them 10th and 27 birdies.

On to the 3rd and final round…

Go Buckeyes!

You’d be all smiles, too, if you did what the Buckeyes did on Saturday.

The Big Ten Championship is this week. The background and 1st round play of the Buckeyes is here.

As a refresher: the six players participating for the Buckeyes are: Katja Pogacar, Jessica Porvasnik, Jaclyn Lee, Rio Watanabe, Niki Schroeder and Zoe-Beth Brake.

So, to help set the context of this recap: In my write-up of the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational, I expressed this: “if the Buckeyes are within a few strokes of you entering the final round… they will hunt you down.”

On the 4ooth anniversary of his death, I’ll let someone far more versed than I, William Shakespeare, explain what happened on Saturday.

Shall in these confines with a monarch’s voice
Cry ‘Havoc,’ and let slip the dogs of war;

  • Julius Caesar Act 3 Scene 1, 270-275

2nd Round

The “dogs of war” shot a -7 score; the best of the round by 5 strokes and moved up 7 positions to 2nd place, trailing Northwestern by 2 strokes. Buckeyes had sub-par rounds by Katja Pogacar, Jessica Porvasnik, Niki Schroeder and Rio Watanabe. They absolutely chased down the field Saturday. This was an outstanding round of team golf.

They shot a team score of 281 (-7), a 10 stroke improvement from Friday, and moved them up 7 positions to 2nd place. The Buckeyes were led by Niki Schroeder 69 (-3), Jessica Porvasnik 70 (-2), Rio Watanabe 70 (-2) and Katja Pogacar 72 (E). Jaclyn Lee 74 (+2) and Zoe-Beth Brake 76 (+4) rounded our the scoring.

Niki built on her closing 1st round momentum to have an even par front 9. Her 3 birdies/6 pars on her back nine powered her -3 score.

Jessica was -2 through 12 holes, then combined 2 birdies/2 bogeys enroute to her round of 70.

Rio birdied her first 2 holes, then birdied 2 of her last 3 holes for her 70.

Katja was -2 through 12 holes, then played her closing 6 holes in +2 for her even par round.

Jaclyn had a mid-round stretch of six holes where she was +4, then played her closing 7 holes in -2. This was a nice closing stretch that should give her confidence going into her final round.

Zoe-Beth was even par through 7 holes. A mid-round stretch of +5 stalled her round, but she finished strongly by scoring 1 in her closing five holes.

Below is the Buckeye scoring:

Big Ten Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Total
Team 291 281 0 572
Katja Pogacar 69 72 0 141
Jessica Porvasnik 71 70 0 141
Jaclyn Lee 76 74 0 150
Rio Watanabe 75 70 0 145
Niki Schroeder 77 69 0 146
Zoe-Beth Brake 79 76 0 155
291 281 0 572
3 -7 0 0

Through two rounds, Ohio State played the par 3’s fairly well, averaging a 3.08, +4 to par, ranking them 2nd. They played the par 4’s to an average of 4,16, +19 to par, ranking them 6th. They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.81, -9 to par, ranking them 2nd. They improved their scoring on the par 4’s and par 5’s in the 2nd round.

The Buckeyes put together a round comprised of 19 birdies (double round 1), 71 pars and 18 bogeys. They cleaned up their play with no score higher than bogey.

Over two rounds, Ohio State had 149 pars, ranking them 1st, and 28 birdies, ranking them T-10th.

After yesterday’s round, I thought the Buckeyes had a reasonable chance to move from 9th into 3rd place. Late in the round they were in solo 2nd place and held that position. An impressive round on “moving day”. They trail Northwestern by 2 strokes. Rest easy, Wildcats… For Sunday’s final round, more William Shakespeare: “..the game is afoot..”

Now, on to the 3rd and final round…

Go Buckeyes!

Ronnie Dawson's big day helped the Buckeyes give themselves a shot at a series win in Champaign.

Ohio State bounced back from Friday's disappointing extra innings loss in a big way on Saturday against Illinois. The Buckeyes beat the Illini 9-1 in Champaign to even the series and give themselves a chance for the series win on Sunday.

Ronnie Dawson stayed red hot, extending his hitting streak to eight games and reached-base streak to a career-high 16 games with a 4-for-5 day. The junior left fielder hit a mammoth home run, drove in two runs, and scored a pair. Dawson has raised his batting average to .316 during his recent tear.

Junior Jalen Washington, who had two hits in Friday night's loss, also continued to swing a hot bat, going 2-for-2 and driving in the Buckeyes' first two runs. His fellow co-captain, senior Nick Sergakis, and junior leadoff man Troy Montgomery each also had a pair of RBIs in the game.

John Havird kept up his string of quality starts, tossing five innings of one-run ball. The senior lefty allowed five hits and three walks in improving to 4-1 on the season.

In the top of the second, Ohio State was able to put its first run on the board. Craig Nennig led the inning off with a bunt single and eventually came around to score on a two-out single to left by Washington for a 1-0 lead.

It was Washington who came through in the clutch again in the fourth inning, extending the lead to 2-0. After Ryan Leffel doubled to left center, the Buckeye catcher delivered another two-out RBI single, this time to short right-center.

Ohio State added another one in the top of the fifth thanks to a couple of defensive miscues by the Illini. Jacob Bosiokovic reached on an error by Illinois shortstop Adam Walton and moved to third when Dawson picked up a double on a chopper that got through the infield and died in short right. Sergakis then hit a groundball to Walton that brought Bosiokovic plateward.

Illinois put a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth, but it could have been much worse. A single, a walk, and a hit by pitch loaded the bases against Havird with nobody out, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Luke Shilling after freshman Ryan Feltner relieved made it a 3-1 ballgame. But a laser line drive off the bat of Pat McInerney was caught by Bosiokovic at first, who stepped on the bag to complete a double play and end the threat.

The Buckeyes got that run right back in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Sergakis. Dawson had singled and stolen second to lead the inning off and made it a 4-1 advantage.

In the eighth, Ohio State tacked three more onto its tally. Tre Gantt walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Washington, and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Montgomery.

After a Bosiokovic walk, Dawson destroyed a ball, hitting it over the scoreboard in right field, as the Buckeyes lead grew to 7-1.

The final two runs crossed the plate in the top of the ninth. Nennig led off with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Gantt walked and came around on a Montgomery double, making it 9-1.

Feltner threw the final four innings in scoreless fashion, yielding just two hits while striking out four and walking two.

Sunday's rubber match will get started at 2 p.m. ET and will stream live on BTN Plus. Ohio State will send Adam Niemeyer to the hill against Illinois' Cole Bellair.

With just as many Buckeyes likely to be taken in this year's first round, we look back at how Ohio State's 2006 picks have fared in the NFL.

In just a couple weeks the 2016 NFL Draft will take place in Chicago, and this year's edition will likely look a lot like the draft that took place 10 years ago. In the 2006 NFL Draft, Ohio State had five players get drafted in the first round. This year's NFL Draft will likely see at least that many Buckeyes get chosen in the first round, if not more.

Much like in 2006 when Ohio State had two players selected in the first eight picks of the draft, this year could see the same thing happen, as Joey Bosa and Ezekiel Elliott are two of the most heralded prospects in this year's draft, with many mock drafts having both of them being taken within the first eight picks. The rest of the first round should see at least Taylor Decker and Darron Lee selected by the time the 20th pick is on the clock. Eli Apple, Vonn Bell, and Michael Thomas also are being talked about as possible first round picks.

With the first round of this year's NFL Draft likely to be dominated by Ohio State players being chosen, we should take a deeper look back at Ohio State's first round draft class from 2006 and see how their NFL careers have panned out since entering the league.

A.J. Hawk

The first Ohio State player taken in the 2006 NFL Draft was A.J. Hawk, who was taken fifth overall by the Green Bay Packers. During his senior year at Ohio State, Hawk not only won the Lombardi Award, but he also was a unanimous first-team All-American selection. Even though Hawk didn't earn quite as many accolades i the NFL, he has still gone on to have a very successful NFL career.

Hawk's performance during his rookie year was good enough to earn him third place in the AP's Defensive Player of the Year voting. During his nine seasons in Green Bay, Hawk registered at least 100 tackles in five seasons. Hawk was also very reliable, starting at least 13 games in all nine seasons with the Packers, and starting 16 games in five seasons.

The crowning achievement for Hawk came during the 2010 season, as the Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. Hawk was able to add a Super Bowl ring to the National Championship ring he earned while at Ohio State.

Prior to last season, Hawk signed a two-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals. Last year Hawk appeared in 16 games for Cincinnati, starting 11 of those games, and recording 24 tackles and a sack.

Donte Whitner

The next Buckeye that was taken in the 2006 NFL Draft was Donte Whitner. While there was no doubt he would be taken rather early in the draft, many were surprised at how high he was taken. The Buffalo Bills decided Whitner was their man, taking him with the eighth overall pick.

The selection of Whitner that early in the draft may have created some unrealistic expectations, but he was still productive in his four years in Buffalo, notching 104 tackles in his rookie season and 140 tackles in 2010. After four seasons in Buffalo, both Whitner and the Bills decided to go their separate ways.

The next stop for Whitner was San Francisco, where the former Buckeye had some of his best seasons as a professional. Not only was Whitner a part of the San Francisco team that made a Super Bowl appearance in 2012, but he was also earned Pro Bowl selections in 2012 and 2013.

Following three seasons in San Francisco, Whitner made a homecoming, signing with the Cleveland Browns prior to the 2014 season. After making 106 tackles in his first year in Cleveland, Whitner earned Pro Bowl honors for the third straight season. Early this month Whitner was released by the Browns, and is currently hoping to latch on with another NFL team.

Bobby Carpenter

While the first two members of the Ohio State defense drafted in the 2006 NFL Draft have found some success in the NFL, the same can't be said for the next member taken. Bobby Carpenter was taken with the 18th pick by the Dallas Cowboys. Carpenter didn't make too much of an impact during his time in Dallas over the four seasons he was there, only recording 96 tackles and starting just three games over that time.

In May 2010, Dallas traded Carpenter to St. Louis for offensive lineman Alex Barron. Carpenter was one of the last cuts by the Rams before the 2010 season started. Miami picked up Carpenter two days after he was cut by the Rams, but the former Ohio State linebacker didn't last too long with the Dolphins, getting released after just five games with the team.

Two days after being released by Miami, Detroit signed Carpenter. Not only would Carpenter spend the rest of the 2010 season with the Lions, but he would also spend the 2011 in Detroit. The highlight of Carpenter's NFL career came in 2011 when he recorded a 34-yard interception return against Dallas, which would spark a 24-point comeback by the Lions.

In 2012 Carpenter appeared in four games with the New England Patriots before being released. Currently he is the host of "Carpenter & Rothman" on 97.1 WBNS-FM in Columbus.

Santonio Holmes

A.J. Hawk isn't the only former Buckeye taken in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft to earn a Super Bowl ring. Santonio Holmes was taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 25th overall pick. During is first season in Pittsburgh, Holmes ended up catching 49 passes for 824 yards. The performance during his rookie season was good enough to earn Holmes a starting job prior to his second year in Pittsburgh, where he caught 52 passes and eight touchdowns.

The 2008 season is where Holmes really made a name for himself, especially when it counted most. Holmes was named the Super Bowl XLIII MVP after catching nine passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. On the final drive Holmes recorded four of those catches for 73 yards, and what would turn out to be the game-winning touchdown with 35 seconds left in regulation.

Holmes followed up his heroic Super Bowl performance with 79 catches for 1,248 yards in 2009, but trouble would soon find Holmes. Prior to being traded to the New York Jets in April 2010, the NFL announced they had suspended Holmes for the first four games of the 2010 season due to a violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

Even with the suspension, Holmes still caught 52 passes for 746 during the regular season, and the Jets made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game before being dispatched by Holmes' former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Holmes spent three more seasons in New York, with his best season of those coming in 2011, where he caught 51 passes.

Holmes spent nine games with the Chicago Bears in 2014, but didn't have much of an impact, catching just eight passes before being released. For his NFL career, Holmes caught 389 passes, with 36 of those being touchdown receptions.

Nick Mangold

While he hasn't yet earned a Super Bowl ring like Hawk and Holmes, the final Ohio State player taken in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft is the one who has earned the most personal accolades. Nick Mangold was taken with the 29th overall selection by the New York Jets.

After starting for three years at Ohio State, Mangold didn't have much trouble transitioning to the NFL, allowing just half a sack in his rookie season. Mangold has earned Pro Bowl honors seven times during his career, and has been selected as a first-team All-Pro in two seasons.

In August 2010, Mangold signed a seven-year contract worth $55 million, with $22.5 million guaranteed, making him the highest paid center in the NFL at the time. Mangold has started all 16 games in seven of his NFL seasons, and has never started less than 14 games during his time with the Jets. Mangold will suit up for the Jets at least for a couple more seasons, as he is signed through the 2017 season.

A pitcher's duel in Champaign ended in heartbreak for the Buckeyes.

In a pitcher's duel that lasted 15 innings, saw nine pitchers take the mound, and 413 pitches thrown, it was a wild pitch that handed Illinois a 1-0 extra inning win over Ohio State in Champaign on Friday night.

Jack Yalowitz stood on third with two outs in the bottom of the 15th inning when Buckeye reliever Kyle Michalik's tailing fastball eluded the glove of catcher Jalen Washington. Yalowitz scored the only run of the game to give the Illini the walk-off win.

Ohio State fell to 4-6 in Big Ten play, while the Illini improved to 5-5, moving into a tie with Maryland for seventh place in the conference standings.

To say that the pitching in this game dominated would be the understatement of the college baseball season. The two teams combined to strike out 33 batters and leave 20 men on base.

Tanner Tully was back to his usual self for Ohio State after a tough start last weekend against Rutgers. The junior lefty threw nine scoreless innings, scattering seven hits while striking out six and walking one in a no-decision.

Illini starter Cody Sedlock, one of the top draft prospects in the Big Ten, lived up to his billing. The big right-hander added to his conference-leading strikeout total, racking up a career-high 14 punchouts in 10.2 scoreless innings of work.

Sedlock's workload reached 132 pitches, which in this age of rampant arm injuries is rarely seen, as he allowed five hits and one free pass.

After the starters left the game, the bullpens were equally as dominant until a pair of singles off Michalik set up the winning run. The Illinois relievers didn't allow a hit in 4.1 innings, while Ohio State's yielded just four in 5.2 innings of their own.

Michalik took the loss, falling to 1-1 in 2016, while Charlie Naso, who worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top half of the 15th, evened his record at 1-1.

The two sides will square off again on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET with John Havird on the bump for the Buckeyes against the Illini's Doug Hayes.

The Buckeyes returned to Indiana, Newburgh, this week for the Big Ten Championship, played Friday through Sunday. The site is the Victoria National Golf Course, a 7,465 yard, par 72 layout. It has a USGA course rating of 77 and a slope of 148. In addition to the length, the other focus will be on accuracy; water hazards come into play on 1t of the 18 holes. (The highest slope rating assigned by the USGA is 155. With a rating of 148, VNGC is a very tough course. )

The schedule is for a three day, three round, 54 hole event. The format is ‘play five count four’, where a school fields 5 players, and the low 4 scores for each round are counted.

This is a fourteen team field, with four teams ranked in the Top-50 by Golfstat: #3 Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, #42 Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, #31 Penn State, #32 Purdue, Rutgers and Wisconsin.

The participating players participating were: Will Grimmer, Tee-k Kelly, Clark Engle, Josh Wick and Grant Weaver. This has been the core lineup for coaches Moseley and Smith for most of the season.

First Round

The Buckeyes got solid performances from Will Grimmer and Josh Wick. The youth played well in the opening round. By the end of the round, the team score of 298 (+10) had them in 9th place.

The Buckeyes were led by Will Grimmer 70 (-2). and Josh Wick 74 (+2). Tee-k Kelly 76 (+4) and Grant Weaver 78 (+6) contributed to the team score. Clark Engle shot a 79 (+7) to round out the team scoring.

The Buckeyes had an up and down round. In their first six holes, their team score was -3 to par, driven by Tee-K Kelly’s round of -3 to that point! Their middle 6 holes was not well played at all, with the team score recording a +12 to par. However, they finished strong, with their final 6 holes showing a team score of +1. That’s a pretty good rebound stretch.

Player scores, below:

Big Ten Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Total To Par
Team 298 0 0 298 -566
Will Grimmer 70 0 0 70 -146
Tee-k Kelly 76 0 0 76 -140
Clark Engle 79 0 0 79 -137
Josh Wick 74 0 0 74 -142
Grant Weaver 78 0 0 78 -138
To Par 10 0 0 0 0

Will had a very efficient front 9, 1 birdie/8 pars, then finished with consecutive birdies for his round of -2. The score placed him in a T-6th place in overall scoring.

Josh had an OK start of +3 on his front 9, then played his last 6 holes in -2 for another strong finish. When you finish a round like Will and Josh, you want to get right back out onto the course.

Tee-K was unconscious in his first hour (or so) of play, shooting 3 birdies in his first 6 holes! (Good god!) However, a double bogey on #17 and a triple on #1 put the brakes to an otherwise tremendous round of golf.

Grant was +2 on his front nine, but ran into a stretch of back-9 bogeys to muddle up his round. However, he did finish with a birdie on his last hole.

Clark birdied his first hole, but had stretched where par putts wouldn’t drop. His score wasn’t up to his standards. Expect it to be Saturday.

Ohio State started extremely well, hit a wall for about an hour and a half, then finished on a very positive note. The six Buckeyes played the 18th hole in an aggregate of -1 (birdies by Grimmer, Wick, Weaver) to end the 1st round. I think this is a good momentum builder for the 2nd round. he young “kids” (Grimmer.Wick) are plying with confidence and the upperclassmen (Engle,Kelly, Weaver) have a good handle on recovering from a so-so round. U think they’ll settle in for a good round Saturday.

The Buckeyes put together a first round comprised of 11 birdies, 56 pars, 19 bogeys, 3 double bogeys and 1 triple bogey.

Ohio State played the par 3’s to an average of 3.35, 7 over par, ranking 11th. They played the par 4’s to an average of 4,28, +14 to par, ranking them T-8th. They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.80, -4 to par, ranking them 4th.

Ohio State had 56 pars, ranking them 3rd, but only 11 birdies, ranking the 13th.

On to the 2nd round…

Go Buckeyes!
