Ronnie Dawson's big day helped the Buckeyes give themselves a shot at a series win in Champaign.

Ohio State bounced back from Friday's disappointing extra innings loss in a big way on Saturday against Illinois. The Buckeyes beat the Illini 9-1 in Champaign to even the series and give themselves a chance for the series win on Sunday.

Ronnie Dawson stayed red hot, extending his hitting streak to eight games and reached-base streak to a career-high 16 games with a 4-for-5 day. The junior left fielder hit a mammoth home run, drove in two runs, and scored a pair. Dawson has raised his batting average to .316 during his recent tear.

Junior Jalen Washington, who had two hits in Friday night's loss, also continued to swing a hot bat, going 2-for-2 and driving in the Buckeyes' first two runs. His fellow co-captain, senior Nick Sergakis, and junior leadoff man Troy Montgomery each also had a pair of RBIs in the game.

John Havird kept up his string of quality starts, tossing five innings of one-run ball. The senior lefty allowed five hits and three walks in improving to 4-1 on the season.

In the top of the second, Ohio State was able to put its first run on the board. Craig Nennig led the inning off with a bunt single and eventually came around to score on a two-out single to left by Washington for a 1-0 lead.

It was Washington who came through in the clutch again in the fourth inning, extending the lead to 2-0. After Ryan Leffel doubled to left center, the Buckeye catcher delivered another two-out RBI single, this time to short right-center.

Ohio State added another one in the top of the fifth thanks to a couple of defensive miscues by the Illini. Jacob Bosiokovic reached on an error by Illinois shortstop Adam Walton and moved to third when Dawson picked up a double on a chopper that got through the infield and died in short right. Sergakis then hit a groundball to Walton that brought Bosiokovic plateward.

Illinois put a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth, but it could have been much worse. A single, a walk, and a hit by pitch loaded the bases against Havird with nobody out, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Luke Shilling after freshman Ryan Feltner relieved made it a 3-1 ballgame. But a laser line drive off the bat of Pat McInerney was caught by Bosiokovic at first, who stepped on the bag to complete a double play and end the threat.

The Buckeyes got that run right back in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Sergakis. Dawson had singled and stolen second to lead the inning off and made it a 4-1 advantage.

In the eighth, Ohio State tacked three more onto its tally. Tre Gantt walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Washington, and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Montgomery.

After a Bosiokovic walk, Dawson destroyed a ball, hitting it over the scoreboard in right field, as the Buckeyes lead grew to 7-1.

The final two runs crossed the plate in the top of the ninth. Nennig led off with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Gantt walked and came around on a Montgomery double, making it 9-1.

Feltner threw the final four innings in scoreless fashion, yielding just two hits while striking out four and walking two.

Sunday's rubber match will get started at 2 p.m. ET and will stream live on BTN Plus. Ohio State will send Adam Niemeyer to the hill against Illinois' Cole Bellair.

With just as many Buckeyes likely to be taken in this year's first round, we look back at how Ohio State's 2006 picks have fared in the NFL.

In just a couple weeks the 2016 NFL Draft will take place in Chicago, and this year's edition will likely look a lot like the draft that took place 10 years ago. In the 2006 NFL Draft, Ohio State had five players get drafted in the first round. This year's NFL Draft will likely see at least that many Buckeyes get chosen in the first round, if not more.

Much like in 2006 when Ohio State had two players selected in the first eight picks of the draft, this year could see the same thing happen, as Joey Bosa and Ezekiel Elliott are two of the most heralded prospects in this year's draft, with many mock drafts having both of them being taken within the first eight picks. The rest of the first round should see at least Taylor Decker and Darron Lee selected by the time the 20th pick is on the clock. Eli Apple, Vonn Bell, and Michael Thomas also are being talked about as possible first round picks.

With the first round of this year's NFL Draft likely to be dominated by Ohio State players being chosen, we should take a deeper look back at Ohio State's first round draft class from 2006 and see how their NFL careers have panned out since entering the league.

A.J. Hawk

The first Ohio State player taken in the 2006 NFL Draft was A.J. Hawk, who was taken fifth overall by the Green Bay Packers. During his senior year at Ohio State, Hawk not only won the Lombardi Award, but he also was a unanimous first-team All-American selection. Even though Hawk didn't earn quite as many accolades i the NFL, he has still gone on to have a very successful NFL career.

Hawk's performance during his rookie year was good enough to earn him third place in the AP's Defensive Player of the Year voting. During his nine seasons in Green Bay, Hawk registered at least 100 tackles in five seasons. Hawk was also very reliable, starting at least 13 games in all nine seasons with the Packers, and starting 16 games in five seasons.

The crowning achievement for Hawk came during the 2010 season, as the Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. Hawk was able to add a Super Bowl ring to the National Championship ring he earned while at Ohio State.

Prior to last season, Hawk signed a two-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals. Last year Hawk appeared in 16 games for Cincinnati, starting 11 of those games, and recording 24 tackles and a sack.

Donte Whitner

The next Buckeye that was taken in the 2006 NFL Draft was Donte Whitner. While there was no doubt he would be taken rather early in the draft, many were surprised at how high he was taken. The Buffalo Bills decided Whitner was their man, taking him with the eighth overall pick.

The selection of Whitner that early in the draft may have created some unrealistic expectations, but he was still productive in his four years in Buffalo, notching 104 tackles in his rookie season and 140 tackles in 2010. After four seasons in Buffalo, both Whitner and the Bills decided to go their separate ways.

The next stop for Whitner was San Francisco, where the former Buckeye had some of his best seasons as a professional. Not only was Whitner a part of the San Francisco team that made a Super Bowl appearance in 2012, but he was also earned Pro Bowl selections in 2012 and 2013.

Following three seasons in San Francisco, Whitner made a homecoming, signing with the Cleveland Browns prior to the 2014 season. After making 106 tackles in his first year in Cleveland, Whitner earned Pro Bowl honors for the third straight season. Early this month Whitner was released by the Browns, and is currently hoping to latch on with another NFL team.

Bobby Carpenter

While the first two members of the Ohio State defense drafted in the 2006 NFL Draft have found some success in the NFL, the same can't be said for the next member taken. Bobby Carpenter was taken with the 18th pick by the Dallas Cowboys. Carpenter didn't make too much of an impact during his time in Dallas over the four seasons he was there, only recording 96 tackles and starting just three games over that time.

In May 2010, Dallas traded Carpenter to St. Louis for offensive lineman Alex Barron. Carpenter was one of the last cuts by the Rams before the 2010 season started. Miami picked up Carpenter two days after he was cut by the Rams, but the former Ohio State linebacker didn't last too long with the Dolphins, getting released after just five games with the team.

Two days after being released by Miami, Detroit signed Carpenter. Not only would Carpenter spend the rest of the 2010 season with the Lions, but he would also spend the 2011 in Detroit. The highlight of Carpenter's NFL career came in 2011 when he recorded a 34-yard interception return against Dallas, which would spark a 24-point comeback by the Lions.

In 2012 Carpenter appeared in four games with the New England Patriots before being released. Currently he is the host of "Carpenter & Rothman" on 97.1 WBNS-FM in Columbus.

Santonio Holmes

A.J. Hawk isn't the only former Buckeye taken in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft to earn a Super Bowl ring. Santonio Holmes was taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 25th overall pick. During is first season in Pittsburgh, Holmes ended up catching 49 passes for 824 yards. The performance during his rookie season was good enough to earn Holmes a starting job prior to his second year in Pittsburgh, where he caught 52 passes and eight touchdowns.

The 2008 season is where Holmes really made a name for himself, especially when it counted most. Holmes was named the Super Bowl XLIII MVP after catching nine passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. On the final drive Holmes recorded four of those catches for 73 yards, and what would turn out to be the game-winning touchdown with 35 seconds left in regulation.

Holmes followed up his heroic Super Bowl performance with 79 catches for 1,248 yards in 2009, but trouble would soon find Holmes. Prior to being traded to the New York Jets in April 2010, the NFL announced they had suspended Holmes for the first four games of the 2010 season due to a violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

Even with the suspension, Holmes still caught 52 passes for 746 during the regular season, and the Jets made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game before being dispatched by Holmes' former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Holmes spent three more seasons in New York, with his best season of those coming in 2011, where he caught 51 passes.

Holmes spent nine games with the Chicago Bears in 2014, but didn't have much of an impact, catching just eight passes before being released. For his NFL career, Holmes caught 389 passes, with 36 of those being touchdown receptions.

Nick Mangold

While he hasn't yet earned a Super Bowl ring like Hawk and Holmes, the final Ohio State player taken in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft is the one who has earned the most personal accolades. Nick Mangold was taken with the 29th overall selection by the New York Jets.

After starting for three years at Ohio State, Mangold didn't have much trouble transitioning to the NFL, allowing just half a sack in his rookie season. Mangold has earned Pro Bowl honors seven times during his career, and has been selected as a first-team All-Pro in two seasons.

In August 2010, Mangold signed a seven-year contract worth $55 million, with $22.5 million guaranteed, making him the highest paid center in the NFL at the time. Mangold has started all 16 games in seven of his NFL seasons, and has never started less than 14 games during his time with the Jets. Mangold will suit up for the Jets at least for a couple more seasons, as he is signed through the 2017 season.

A pitcher's duel in Champaign ended in heartbreak for the Buckeyes.

In a pitcher's duel that lasted 15 innings, saw nine pitchers take the mound, and 413 pitches thrown, it was a wild pitch that handed Illinois a 1-0 extra inning win over Ohio State in Champaign on Friday night.

Jack Yalowitz stood on third with two outs in the bottom of the 15th inning when Buckeye reliever Kyle Michalik's tailing fastball eluded the glove of catcher Jalen Washington. Yalowitz scored the only run of the game to give the Illini the walk-off win.

Ohio State fell to 4-6 in Big Ten play, while the Illini improved to 5-5, moving into a tie with Maryland for seventh place in the conference standings.

To say that the pitching in this game dominated would be the understatement of the college baseball season. The two teams combined to strike out 33 batters and leave 20 men on base.

Tanner Tully was back to his usual self for Ohio State after a tough start last weekend against Rutgers. The junior lefty threw nine scoreless innings, scattering seven hits while striking out six and walking one in a no-decision.

Illini starter Cody Sedlock, one of the top draft prospects in the Big Ten, lived up to his billing. The big right-hander added to his conference-leading strikeout total, racking up a career-high 14 punchouts in 10.2 scoreless innings of work.

Sedlock's workload reached 132 pitches, which in this age of rampant arm injuries is rarely seen, as he allowed five hits and one free pass.

After the starters left the game, the bullpens were equally as dominant until a pair of singles off Michalik set up the winning run. The Illinois relievers didn't allow a hit in 4.1 innings, while Ohio State's yielded just four in 5.2 innings of their own.

Michalik took the loss, falling to 1-1 in 2016, while Charlie Naso, who worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top half of the 15th, evened his record at 1-1.

The two sides will square off again on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET with John Havird on the bump for the Buckeyes against the Illini's Doug Hayes.

The Buckeyes returned to Indiana, Newburgh, this week for the Big Ten Championship, played Friday through Sunday. The site is the Victoria National Golf Course, a 7,465 yard, par 72 layout. It has a USGA course rating of 77 and a slope of 148. In addition to the length, the other focus will be on accuracy; water hazards come into play on 1t of the 18 holes. (The highest slope rating assigned by the USGA is 155. With a rating of 148, VNGC is a very tough course. )

The schedule is for a three day, three round, 54 hole event. The format is ‘play five count four’, where a school fields 5 players, and the low 4 scores for each round are counted.

This is a fourteen team field, with four teams ranked in the Top-50 by Golfstat: #3 Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, #42 Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, #31 Penn State, #32 Purdue, Rutgers and Wisconsin.

The participating players participating were: Will Grimmer, Tee-k Kelly, Clark Engle, Josh Wick and Grant Weaver. This has been the core lineup for coaches Moseley and Smith for most of the season.

First Round

The Buckeyes got solid performances from Will Grimmer and Josh Wick. The youth played well in the opening round. By the end of the round, the team score of 298 (+10) had them in 9th place.

The Buckeyes were led by Will Grimmer 70 (-2). and Josh Wick 74 (+2). Tee-k Kelly 76 (+4) and Grant Weaver 78 (+6) contributed to the team score. Clark Engle shot a 79 (+7) to round out the team scoring.

The Buckeyes had an up and down round. In their first six holes, their team score was -3 to par, driven by Tee-K Kelly’s round of -3 to that point! Their middle 6 holes was not well played at all, with the team score recording a +12 to par. However, they finished strong, with their final 6 holes showing a team score of +1. That’s a pretty good rebound stretch.

Player scores, below:

Big Ten Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Total To Par
Team 298 0 0 298 -566
Will Grimmer 70 0 0 70 -146
Tee-k Kelly 76 0 0 76 -140
Clark Engle 79 0 0 79 -137
Josh Wick 74 0 0 74 -142
Grant Weaver 78 0 0 78 -138
To Par 10 0 0 0 0

Will had a very efficient front 9, 1 birdie/8 pars, then finished with consecutive birdies for his round of -2. The score placed him in a T-6th place in overall scoring.

Josh had an OK start of +3 on his front 9, then played his last 6 holes in -2 for another strong finish. When you finish a round like Will and Josh, you want to get right back out onto the course.

Tee-K was unconscious in his first hour (or so) of play, shooting 3 birdies in his first 6 holes! (Good god!) However, a double bogey on #17 and a triple on #1 put the brakes to an otherwise tremendous round of golf.

Grant was +2 on his front nine, but ran into a stretch of back-9 bogeys to muddle up his round. However, he did finish with a birdie on his last hole.

Clark birdied his first hole, but had stretched where par putts wouldn’t drop. His score wasn’t up to his standards. Expect it to be Saturday.

Ohio State started extremely well, hit a wall for about an hour and a half, then finished on a very positive note. The six Buckeyes played the 18th hole in an aggregate of -1 (birdies by Grimmer, Wick, Weaver) to end the 1st round. I think this is a good momentum builder for the 2nd round. he young “kids” (Grimmer.Wick) are plying with confidence and the upperclassmen (Engle,Kelly, Weaver) have a good handle on recovering from a so-so round. U think they’ll settle in for a good round Saturday.

The Buckeyes put together a first round comprised of 11 birdies, 56 pars, 19 bogeys, 3 double bogeys and 1 triple bogey.

Ohio State played the par 3’s to an average of 3.35, 7 over par, ranking 11th. They played the par 4’s to an average of 4,28, +14 to par, ranking them T-8th. They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.80, -4 to par, ranking them 4th.

Ohio State had 56 pars, ranking them 3rd, but only 11 birdies, ranking the 13th.

On to the 2nd round…

Go Buckeyes!

This week the team travels to Indianapolis, IN for the Big Ten Championships. It will be contested at The Fort Golf Resort, a course set up to play at 6,221 yards and play to a par of 72. This should be an interesting weekend for a couple of reasons. First, the Buckeyes are defending B1G Champions, so a title defense is in play. Actually, they have won the B1G tourney the last two consecutive years, they are going for a three-peat. Secondly, the ‘play 6 score 4’ format, below, suited Ohio State in their previous event, where they finished in 2nd place.

This tournament is scheduled for three rounds to be played over three days, a total of 54 holes. The format is ‘play six count four’, where a school fields 6 players and the low 4 scores for each player are counted in the round.

The field consisted of 14 teams, with 5 of them ranked in the Golfstat Top 50: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, #No. 50 Michigan, #40 Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, #7 Northwestern, #34 Ohio State, Penn State, #25 Purdue, Rutgers and Wisconsin.

The six players participating for the Buckeyes are: Katja Pogacar, Jessica Porvasnik, Jaclyn Lee, Rio Watanabe, Niki Schroeder and Zoe-Beth Brake.

1st Round

The Buckeyes had stellar rounds by Katja Pogacar and Jessica Porvasnik to position them in a workable position for Saturday’s 2nd round. Ohio State had three steady six hole stretches of play in their opening round. In their first 6 holes, they shot a team score of -1 to par. In their 2nd six holes, +2 to par and in their 3rd six holes, +2 to par. Solid enough play to easily move up in the standings over the next two rounds.

They shot a team score of 291 (+3) placing them in 9th position. The Buckeyes were led by Katja Pogacar 69 (-3) and Jessica Porvasnik 71 (-1). Rio Watanabe 75 (+3) and Jaclyn Lee 76 (+4) contributed to the team score. Niki Schroeder 77 (+5) and Zoe-Beth Brake an 79 (+7) rounded our the scoring.

Katja had an outstanding bogey-free round of 3 birdies enroute to her 69. If you want to catch the exuberance of NCAA golf, this clip of Katja’s birdie on #14 says it all.

Jessica opened her round with a birdie, then blended 2 birdie/2 bogeys for her round of -1, 71. Any sub-par round, particularly in post season play.

Rio had a handful (5) of bogeys, but her 2 birdies on the back 9 put her in complete control of her round.

Jaclyn cruised through a birdie free round without too much damage, since she rang up only 4 bogeys. Nothing great, nothing terrible, just good enough team golf to help OSU stay in the hunt. This was a good round.

Niki was +4 after 4 holes, not a good start at all. She stabilized the patient by playing the final 14 holes in a very good +1 to par. Although her score did not count toward the team total, Niki recovered to put together a solid final three hours of golf. This momentum could be necessary in the 2nd round.

Zoe-Beth had a similar start to Niki (+4 after 4) but managed to clock in a birdie among a few birdies. Although her round did not count either, her solid back nine (+2) likely will give her some momentum going into the 2nd round.

Below is the Buckeye scoring:

Big Ten Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Total
Team 291 0 0 291
Katja Pogacar 69 0 0 69
Jessica Porvasnik 71 0 0 71
Jaclyn Lee 76 0 0 76
Rio Watanabe 75 0 0 75
Niki Schroeder 77 0 0 77
Zoe-Beth Brake 79 0 0 79
291 0 0 291
3 0 0 0

The Buckeyes put together a first round comprised of 9 birdies, 78 pars, 19 bogeys, 1 double bogeys and 1 triple bogey.

Ohio State played the par 3’s fairly well, averaging a 3.04, 1 over par, ranking T-2nd. They played the par 4’s to an average of 4,27, +16 to par, ranking them T-11th. They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.92, -2 to par, ranking them T-9th.

Ohio State had 78 pars, ranking them 1st, and 9 birdies, ranking the 14th.

I think this was a great “pressure” round by the Buckeyes. Coming into the tournament as the 2-time defending champion, they had some sizable targets on their backs. Aside from Katja’s brilliant round and Jessica’s damn good round, the Buckeyes played solid team golf. They understand the “long game” of a three round event. The Buckeyes are only 6 strokes out of 3rd place; a wholly achievable goal for the next round. They are in position to defend their championship.

Now, on to the 2nd round…

Go Buckeyes!

One more win will punch the Buckeyes' ticket to the NCAA volleyball tourney. Vonn Bell talks about the draft (and he might be part of a record-setting Buckeye draft class) and OSU's dive team has fun.

Another day down, and another day chock-full of Ohio State news. Let's take a look at what happened around the flagship institution of Ohio:

"An automatic bid for the 2016 NCAA Men’s Volleyball Tournament is on the line Saturday"

While the football and women's basketball teams got close to bringing home a national championships, the men's volleyball squad are one win away from securing a spot at the NCAA Men's Volleyball Tournament.

The Buckeyes square off against No. 12 Lewis on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET in the MIVA Tournament Championship. If the Buckeyes can pull off the victory, it would be their 20th in a row and 28th total victory on the season.

"I feel totally ready for the pro level"

Vonn Bell to the Arrowhead Pride

With the NFL Draft just a week away, the final rounds of interviews and talks with prospective players are taking place. The latest of the draft bunch from the Buckeyes was Vonn Bell, who spoke about what it would mean if he ended up as a Kansas City Chief.

While the Chiefs have a solid foundation at DB, Bell said he was aware of the potential need in the safety department, as the Chiefs lost one of their safeties to free agency, and the other to retirement.

Mel Kiper Jr. has the former Buckeye headed to the Chiefs at the tail end of the first round (No.28). However, the Chattanooga native wouldn't mind landing at an NFL team close to his hometown; he just wants the chance to play football at the professional level.

"If the Buckeyes make history during next week's NFL Draft, get ready to be bombarded with graphics, #DevelopedHere hashtags and flame emojis from the coaching staff. "

Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

We just wrapped up on Vonn Bell's thoughts on where he might end up going. Now, let's look at what the football world's thoughts may be if Ohio State has a spectacular draft next week.

According to Landis, if the Buckeyes can get six players drafted into the first round, then they would tie the Miami Hurricanes of 2004 with the most picked. Doing a quick rundown of names, here are six of the potential first round draftees: Ezekiel Elliott, Eli Apple, Vonn Bell, Joey Bosa, Braxton Miller, Mike Thomas – and those were just the first six that popped into my head.

Additionally Landis pointed out that the Scarlet and Gray could topple their own record of 14 players picked in an entire draft since the draft structure changed to to seven rounds in 1994.

With that being said, we knew the Buckeyes were a dominant team on the collegiate level; now we all see the potential this team has on the professional level.

Lastly, if the Buckeyes get called one-after-another, it will certainly add to the recruiting juggernaut that Urban Meyer has built since taking over the reigns in Columbus.

"The Buckeyes diving squad spent Wednesday’s practice setting up and making use of a Slip’n Slide with a bit of a twist — or rather, a jump."

Nick Martin, The Washington Post

Making its rounds through the Internet is the Ohio State diving team doing some antics on the diving board. The clip made its rounds through the daytime TV circuit, and now it's here on Land Grant Holy Land to cap off the work week.

This is what happens when the offseason kicks in.

The Buckeyes' swim and dive season ended with a 15th place finish at the NCAA Tournament at the end of March.

It's a long way until the start of the next diving season, but be on the look out for Colin Zeng. The Fujian, China native is the reigning national champion at diving – and the first for the Buckeyes since 2008.

The Buckeyes are in Champaign for a weekend series with the Illini that holds serious implications for the Big Ten standings.

Ohio State has reached the most crucial juncture in its baseball season. Over the course of the next 20 days, the Buckeyes will play nine games against Big Ten opponents, six of which will come on the road, and a pair of midweek games against a team that currently holds a national top-25 ranking in Florida Atlantic. The success or failure of the season may well hinge on this stretch for the boys in scarlet and gray.

The team enters a road series against Illinois riding a three game winning streak, but at 4-5 in conference play, finds itself on the outside looking in at a berth in the Big Ten tournament in Omaha at the end of May. Despite having scored more runs and striking out more batters than any other Big Ten squad, and sporting the fourth-best overall winning percentage in the conference, Ohio State would be going home without a postseason for the first time in head coach Greg Beals' tenure if the season ended today.

The Illini are an identical 4-5 in the Big Ten, so this is a series with major conference tournament implications.

"It's an opportunity for us to one-up somebody in the standings," Beals said after Tuesday night's 9-0 win over Cincinnati. "We need to win that series on the road. We've been playing good baseball at home, and we need to take that on the road."

Last season's three-game sweep at the hands of Illinois in Columbus began a downward spiral for the Buckeyes that saw them lose 10 of 14 in the last month of the season and go from being in the conversation to host a regional to missing the NCAA tournament altogether.

With the exception of last Friday's uncharacteristically mediocre start by Tanner Tully, Ohio State's weekend rotation has been incredibly solid for the past month. The bullpen, which hit a rough patch against Maryland two weekends ago, has bounced back as well.

Offensively, the Buckeyes are simply overpowering their opponents, with the quartet of Jacob Bosiokovic, Nick Sergakis, Troy Montgomery, and Ronnie Dawson all in the top eight in the Big Ten in home runs. Beals' squad is outscoring opponents by an average of over two runs per game on the season.

Ohio State is fighting for its postseason life. While a rough weekend in Champaign wouldn't completely derail the season, a series win against the Illini would give the Buckeyes some breathing room. And a little revenge for the events of last year wouldn't be too bad, either.

Illinois Fighting Illini (18-16, 4-5 in Big Ten play)

Head coach Dan Hartleb guided Illinois to the most successful season in program history a year ago. The Illini set a program record with 50 wins, put together a 27-game winning streak, and advanced to super regionals for the first time. That success, though, also led to nine players being drafted last June and Hartleb looking at the challenge of reloading.
Where those departures have hit Illinois the hardest are at the plate. The Illini are in the bottom half of the conference in most offensive categories and have really struggled at times to score runs.

The leader of the team is undoubtedly senior catcher Jason Goldstein. A first-team All-Big Ten selection and a 17th round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers a year ago, Goldstein leads the team with a .358 batting average, 38 hits, four home runs, 23 RBIs, a .519 slugging percentage, and a .435 on-base percentage. The Highland Park, Illinois native is an All-American candidate and will get plenty of attention from Ohio State's pitchers.

Also having a solid season is the double play combination of redshirt senior second baseman Michael Hurwitz and redshirt junior shortstop Adam Walton. Hurwitz, who didn't not play in 2015, is hitting .302 and has scored 23 runs.

Walton, who received a first-team All-Big Ten nod and was drafted in the 20th round by the Baltimore Orioles, has a .256 average and leads the team with eight doubles and 13 stolen bases from his leadoff spot.

The starting weekend rotation for Illinois has been solid if unspectacular in 2016, which is to be expected when all three members from 2015 had to be replaced. As a team, the Illini allow opponents to hit .260 and sport a collective 3.75 earned run average.

Junior Cody Sedlock is the brightest light among the team's staff, and one of the top prospects in the Big Ten for this June's draft. The 6-foot-4 right-hander is 4-1 in nine starts covering 56.2 innings, and leads the conference with 70 strikeouts. Sedlock holds the opposition to a .247 average and has a 3.5-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Doug Hayes, the redshirt sophomore lefty who will take the ball on Saturday, is 5-2 with a 3.25 ERA in 55.1 innings of work. Those five wins are tops on the team, but his 1.84-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio suggests that Hayes has struggled with his control.

On Sunday, freshman Cole Bellair will be on the mound. The right-hander is 1-2 with a 3.05 ERA in 11 appearances this season, six of which have been starts, with opponents hitting just .224 against him.

Getting to Illinois' starters will be in the Buckeyes' best interest, as the senior righty-lefty combination of Nick Blackburn and J.D. Nielsen have been very effective out of the bullpen, combining for 12 saves and a 4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Reloading, not rebuilding, is probably the proper term for Silver Bullets.

This past Saturday Buckeyes Nation made history, becoming the first school crazy enough about football to pack six digits worth of fans into a stadium -- in April.

If we've learned one thing from spring games over the years it's to not overreact. Guess what? J.T. Barrett is going to have better games. As for that offensive line? The two best players (center Pat Elflein and guard Billy Price) were both out because, you know, it was the spring game.

With that said, we got to watch some football for the first time since January, and that means that there is film to be broken down. Was the game ugly? Yes, but there were also young playmakers everywhere, and fans should be very excited about the 2016 edition of the Silver Bullets.

Columbus, meet Jerome Baker

Jerome Baker, formerly the number one prospect in all of Ohio in the 2015 recruiting class, is apparently the product if Darron Lee and Odell Beckham Jr. were to somehow had a kid together. Ohio State's new SAM linebacker, Baker obviously faced doubts that he could replicate Lee's ability as a spread offense's worst nightmare. While it will take a lot to replicate the future first round picks play on the field, Baker appears to be doing just fine so far.

And get this: my favorite part of this play isn't even the interception! It's that OHIO STATE FINALLY STOPPED A THROWBACK PASS. It seems like every week a team dials up a tight end or full back delay, throwback pass, and it routinely roasts the Buckeyes. Apparently not this year, as Baker did a fantastic job of staying home and putting himself in a position to let his unreal athleticism take over.

Rashod Berry could be a name worth remembering

While Ohio State has a recent history of giving defense players numbers with no real rhyme or reason (Sam Hubbard is No. 6, Raekwon McMillan is No. 5), there's still just something about watching a defensive player with a lower number excel. Don't believe me? Watch this:

With the jersey tucked in behind his back plate and the No. 13, it's safe to say that Berry would be rocking the Zeke-crop jersey if the NCAA wasn't so lame. Looking past the atrocious block attempt by the left tackle for a second, Berry shows unnerving speed for a defensive end. At 6'4, 245 lbs Berry is built to be a nightmare off the edge, and as every football fan knows, every backup is always just one play away from being a starter. Plays like the above is very encouraging for an Ohio State defensive line that's losing three starters.

Denzel Ward can run and hit, and it is fun to watch

You might remember Denzel Ward, No. 12, as that really fast guy on the kickoff team from last year who made a few plays for himself. Now? You know him as the (allegedly) fastest Ohio State Buckeye, and a corner who isn't afraid to drop his shoulder and make a hit.

Yes, Weber had already taken contact and wasn't exactly in a position to put up much of a fight against Ward, but still: WOW.

Often when we think of words like "fast" and "corner", these are not the types of hits that come to mind. Seconds later, Ward came untouched off the edge and sacked Barrett. Can it be September already?
