BTN Looking back at Big Ten lottery picks in last 10 NBA drafts

Looking back at Big Ten lottery picks in last 10 NBA drafts
Brent Yarina, BTN.com Senior Editor via Big Ten Network

The 2016 NBA Lottery is Tuesday night, which got us thinking about recent Big Ten lottery picks. There’s been a dozen from the Big Ten in the last 10 drafts, none higher than Ohio State’s Greg Oden (No. 1; 2007); three Big Ten names have gone No. 2 (Evan Turner, 2010; Victor Oladipo, 2013; D’Angelo Russell, 2015). School-wise, Indiana and Ohio State pace the Big Ten during this time frame, boasting four lottery picks apiece. Michigan has two, while Illinois and Wisconsin each has one. According to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman, Ohio State junior Trevor Thompson has decided to pull back from the NBA Draft process and return to Ohio State for another season.

Ohio State big man Trevor Thompson told ESPN he has withdrawn from the NBA Draft.

— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanESPN) May 17, 2016

After transferring from Virginia Tech in 2014, Thompson split time with Daniel Giddens at center during his first season in Columbus, starting 28 games for head coach Thad Matta.

The Indianapolis native averaged nearly 18 minutes per game during the 2015-16 season, scoring 6.5 points per game and grabbing 5 rebounds per contest.

Thompson shot 52 percent from the floor and 75 percent from the charity stripe. The Big man only averaged two free throw attempts per game though in his first season with Ohio State.

By returning to play for the Buckeyes, Thompson will be the favorite to start in a very talented incoming front court. He’ll rejoin sophomore David Bell as well as freshman Micah Potter at the center position.

Marc Loving, Keita Bates-Diop, Jae’Sean Tate, Derek Funderburk, and Andre Wesson will fill out the other two forward positions.

Before transferring to Ohio State, Thompson averaged five points and five rebounds during his freshman campaign with Virginia Tech.

Defensively, he returns in 2016 as the team leader in blocks.

Thompson should start next season, but could see competition from other big men in the program.

Thompson had declared for the NBA Draft in late March.

Nearly two months after making himself eligible for the NBA Draft, Ohio State center Trevor Thompson will return the Buckeyes, per ESPN's Jeff Goodman. Thompson's decision to come back to school was an expected one, as it was unlikely that he would have been drafted, especially after missing the NBA Combine.

The 6'11, 250-pound rising redshirt junior appeared in all 35 games for the Buckeyes in 2015-16, making 28 starts. Thompson averaged 6.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while shooting 52 percent from the field. Thompson arrived at Ohio State two seasons ago after he transferred from Virginia Tech following his freshman year.

It's fair to say Thompson's declaration for the draft was centered around a recent NCAA rule change that permits underclassmen to enter their names into the NBA Draft without forfeiting their eligibility. As long an early entrant did not sign with an agent and withdrew from draft consideration by May 25, the player's eligibility would remain intact. (Early entrants that were invited to the 2016 NBA Draft Combine had 10 days after the combine to withdraw, but Thompson was not granted an invitation.) As Cleveland.com pointed out, Thompson could have also worked out with each NBA once and maintained his college eligibility.

With freshman center Daniel Giddens transferring after the season, Thompson should receive the bulk of the minutes at center next season, with his only competition for playing time being rising redshirt sophomore David Bell (who played just 47 minutes during conference play) and incoming freshman Micah Potter.

Stewart Mandel released his way-too-early top 25 college football poll earlier this month, and now it’s time for another respected FOX Sports personality to do so. Bruce Feldman shared his list Monday, and, like Mandel, he has Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State included. Both put Michigan and Ohio State at No. 5 and No. 9, respectively. They disagree on Iowa and Michigan State, though, with Feldman placing Iowa at No. 14. See where Feldman ranks the Big Ten teams, plus get a portion of his team-by-team analysis, below. 5. Todd Sibley “Asked” to Grayshirt: Questionable Decision on Urban’s Part
Ken

toddsibley-150x150.jpg

On Monday’s episode of Script Ohio, Joe Dexter hosted a bit of a discussion on Urban Meyer’s decision to “offer” a gray shirt to 2017 running back commit Todd Sibley.

Once you click to the show, you can see I was in a bit of disagreement with the guests on this. I suggest that you give the show (22 minutes) a good listen, it’s an interesting discussion. It is well worth your time. Below, I’ll come out with my reasons why I think Urban is full of shit with this decision.

Both sides don’t do it

Spare me the “recruits decommit, too’ pablum. Sibley may have been asked to take a grey shirt, but this was a fait accompli; the decision had been made to pull his scholarship for a newer, shinier model. Perhaps, as Chuck suggested, Todd viewed himself as a “commodity”.

It’s conjecture, but let’s assume it’s true. The problem with the “commodity” view is that the valuation of commodities fluctuates over time. Maybe the more accurate mindset is a player is a ‘resource’.

The “adults in the room”, nominally, have the power in this relationship. There are far more players capable of playing college ball than there are scholarship opportunities. You (the high school student) may be providing the “supply”, but I (the coach) am controlling the ‘demand’.

Half-baked decision-making

There seemed to be the implication that higher”rated” recruits that Sibley are coming on board at Ohio State. We’ll discount that OSU’s staff considers recruiting service “star ratings” as a guide, since they are notoriously fickle. Since the OSU staff felt that Sibley was “good enough” to be offered a scholarship, then then pull the scholarship, the decision makers are making some flawed decisions.

Look, if the kid was good enough to be offered a scholarship, then (lacking evidence to the contrary) he’s good enough to maintain that status. Urban, please explain why Sibley fell out of your favor.

What price loyalty?

Sibley was a, relatively, long standing commit to the Ohio State program. We have an Ohio “kid” who seems to be pretty good, good enough to have been offered a scholarship, and wants to play at OSU. From OSU’s perspective, that has to be a pretty good situation. Identify talent early in the process, then lock them into being a Buckeye.

This works fine, until a school decides that they don’t wan’t to take you to the dance. Yes, Sibley’s grey shirt ‘offer’ is a year out from him being on campus. So, if there was a question on his worthiness, why extend an offer so early in the process?

Not helping recruiting

This nonsense is just, IMO, going to make the recruiting effort a bit harder. A player gets an early offer from Ohio State.. is it legit or is it ‘until I find someone better? Two things: you can bet that other schools will use this against Ohio State and you can bet it will delay the decision-making process of the high school kids later in the recruiting process.

Urban says he wants to “build a fence around Ohio” regarding recruiting. His actions are going a lot further than his words.

In my worldview, no one has ever ‘walked on water’, least of all Urban Meyer.

The No. 2 overall player in the 2017 recruiting class wants to take an official visit to Columbus, while two Buckeye commits receive prestigious invitations.

Dylan Moses wants to check out Columbus

The country's top-rated OLB and the No. 2 overall prospect of 2017, made it known Monday afternoon over Twitter that he wanted to take an official visit to Ohio State. Dylan Moses (Bradenton, Fla. / IMG Academy) has been a name associated with most recruiting programs for a couple years now. He has obtained 40 scholarship offers throughout his recruitment and many of those are from the best college football programs in the country.

As it stands today, LSU, Texas and Alabama are the favorites to land the five-star prospect, but their chances of securing a commitment from Moses took a hit Monday. This is because Urban Meyer and the Ohio State football program may get another chance to convince him otherwise.

The Buckeyes, who already have accumulated the No. 1 recruiting class of 2017, still interest Moses and the feeling is definitely reciprocated. The fact that Moses wants to use one of his limited number of official visits on Ohio State should speak to the seriousness of his interest.

Ohio State may not be the current favorites to land Moses, and his interest in visiting the campus very well may be just to ensure he is getting everything out of his recruitment process as possible. However, you can be assured that the schools leading the way in his recruitment are nervous of what will happen if the visit comes to fruition. Meyer is known as one of the best recruiting coaches in all of college football and the football program he has built at Ohio State is proof of that.

Two Ohio State 2017 commits receive invitations to The Opening Finals

Two of the commitments in Ohio State's 2017 class received invitations to the prestigious camp in Oregon, The Opening Finals. Four-star OT Jake Moretti (Arvada, Colo. / Pomona) along with four-star S Brendon White (Powell, Ohio / Olentangy Liberty) were the newest members of the class to receive invitations.

Moretti and White will join fellow Buckeye commits Marcus Williamson (Westerville, OH / IMG Academy), Isaiah Pryor (Lawrenceville,GA / IMG Academy), Antjuan Simmons (Ann Arbor,MI / Pioneer), JK Dobbins (La Grange,TX / La Grange), and Haskell Garrett (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) at the camp held at the Nike headquarters.

Both Moretti and White received their invitations to the camp after shining in the regional event in Chicago last weekend.

Although the Ohio State Men’s Golf team wasn’t selected for the NCAA Regional qualifier (I thought they should have been…) the Buckeyes have two players playing in the Individual status category. There are six regions. The low 5 teams and the low Individual from each Region will advance to play in the NCAA Championships, May 27-June 1 in Eugene, OR. Since the OSUMG team is not participating, my focus will be on following the progress of Individual play. I’ve also listed the teams, in case you’re interested..

Here are the Individuals:

1. Lloyd Jefferson Go, Seton Hall University
2. Patrick Flavin, Miami University (Ohio)
3. Billy Walthouse, University of Rhode Island
4. Otto Black, University of Toledo
5. Tee-k Kelly, The Ohio State University
6. Will Grimmer, The Ohio State University
7. George Baylis, University Akron
8. Trent Wallace, Illinois State University
9. Luke Graboyes, Cornell University
10. Evan Russell, University of Hartford

Here are the teams, listed in order of seed: 1. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2. Florida State University, 3. University of Florida, 4. University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. 5. Baylor University, 6. Pennsylvania State University, 7. University of Memphis, 8. Kent State University, 9. University of California, Los Angeles, 10. East Tennessee State University, 11. Campbell University, 12. University of Idaho, 13. South Dakota State University

Now, on to Round 1:

In a somewhat embarrassment of riches, Tee-k Kelly and Will Grimmer both shot 70 (-2) for their opening round. This places them T-5th overall. That placement means nothing, but it’s good to set the context of where they stand in relation to the other 73 golfers.

Here’s what’s important; both Tee-K and Will are tied for 1st place in the Individual competition. Since only one Individual player advances, Tee-k and Will have positioned themselves well for the 2nd round.

Tee-k

Tee-k started with a bogey on his 1st hole (not good) but responded with a birdie on #2 (always good). He parred holes #3 – #8, then birdied his next 2 holes to move to -2. He parred his next five holes, then finished birdie-bogey-par to wrap up a very solid opening round. He is 1 shot clear of Luke Graboyes (Cornell).

Will

Will opened with four consecutive pars, went birdie-bogey, then closed with three pars for a front side 36 (E). He was hanging around the Individual leaderboard, T-3rd at the turn. Will thrilled the field with 2 birdies /7 pars on his back nine holes to move into a tie for 1st place (Individual) with fellow Buckeye Tee-k Kelly.

They each showed different strengths in the first round. Will played the par 3’s very well; he averaged 2.75, -1 to par and T-2nd overall. Tee-k played the par 4’s in 3.80, -2 to par, ranking him T-3rd. They each played the par 5’s in 4.75, -1 to par. This was middle of pack’ish, but averaging under par is a good effort.

This is a bit of a tense event for Individuals. For team play, there is a bit of “slop” since 5 of 13 teams from each Region advance to the NCAA Championships. With Individual play, it more resembles Thunderdome, except worse. In this case, 10 men enter, 1 man leaves.

On to round 2 on Tuesday.

Go Buckeyes!

Of the 69 players in the NFL who went to Ohio State, who have had the highest earnings over the length of their career?

"...those who have gone onto the league from Columbus have done well for themselves, with total career earnings of $463,584,158, an even more impressive figure when you consider that 15 of those players are going to be rookies this coming season."

-Alex Gleitman, Bucknuts

Ever wonder who the most profitable Buckeye is in the NFL? Of the 69 former Ohio State Buckeyes football players currently in the NFL, 51 are on rosters throughout the league and are earning income. Others, like nose tackle Ryan Pickett, have not officially retired, but are also not playing football anymore. According to data from Spotrac, the total number places Ohio State at the No. 6 spot in current NFL players from the school. The data, which tracks career earnings for all players, shows who the top-earning former Buckeyes are for the length of their careers.

At the top of the list is Cleveland Browns safety Donte Whitner, who has earned over $61 million during his nine-year career. Pickett came in at No. 2 with $45.62 million in earnings, followed by New York Jets center Nick Mangold, whose career earnings total $39.58 million. Linebacker A.J. Hawk, Mangold’s classmate, took the No. 4 spot, having earned $36 million during his career.

While none of the 15 rookies made the top-20 cut, despite massive rookie contracts, New York Jets wide receiver Devin Smith came in at the No. 20 spot after his rookie season, earning just over $3 million. However, assuming that these 15 players play through their initial, four-year contracts, they are expected to earn a cumulative $111 million on the low end.

Pickett, wide receiver Santonio Holmes, guard Rob Sims and safety Will Allen, who are the top-earning, inactive players on the list, came in at the No. 2, 5, 11 and 13 spots, respectively. Surprisingly, long snapper Jake McQuaide, who went undrafted in 2011, has been with the Rams his entire career and comes in at the No. 18 spot.

Check out the full list here.

"We’re thrilled to be able to continue our season in the NCAA Tournament. It’s a testament to our senior class and the leaders on this team who have pushed us the entire year."

-Ohio State softball head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly, via the Ohio State University

Despite losing out to Northwestern in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament last week, the Ohio State Buckeyes softball team has earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament scheduled to begin this weekend. The team is headed to the Knoxville Regional, where they will face No. 22 Arizona in the first round of the tournament. The other two teams in the four-team regional include No. 14 Tennessee and Marist, who won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The first round consists of 16 regions of four teams each playing a double-elimination structure, with one team from each region advancing to the super regionals, best-of-three series.

Ohio State went 33-18-1 on the season, including 13-9-1 in conference. Highlights of the regular season include nine wins over teams with an RPI in the top 75 nationally, including six of these games won outside of Columbus. Four Buckeyes were named to All-Big Ten teams, including two, Cammi Prantl and Alex Bayne, who were first-team selections.

This is Ohio State’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2010, and the eighth in program history. The team has previously made it to the super regionals in 2009, but has not made it to the College World Series since 1982.

In all, six Big Ten teams were selected to the 64-team tournament field, including Minnesota, who won the conference championship over Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament last weekend. Michigan, who is ranked No. 2 nationally, is the only school in the conference to host a regional, and is looking to avenge its loss to Florida in last year’s finals.

The No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes women’s rowing team is cruising on its way to history, winning its fourth-straight conference rowing title over the weekend in Indianapolis. The win is also the seventh title in program history, a Big Ten record.

With four first-place finishes in five events recorded Sunday on wins by the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four and third varsity four, the Buckeyes tallied 174 points to defeat No. 11 Wisconsin, who finished in second place with 159 points. No. 10 Michigan came in third with 154 points, followed by No. 14 Indiana with 115 points. Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan State and Rutgers rounded out the results. The Buckeyes earned a second-place finish in the second varsity four, and did not participate in the second novice eight final. Due to high winds in Indianapolis over the weekend, all preliminary events Saturday were cancelled, so all races conducted Sunday were finals.

Five Buckeyes earned all-conference honors at the conclusion of the tournament, including three who were named First Team all-Big Ten, and junior Sarah Peffley won the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The Buckeyes, who are three-time defending NCAA champions, will head to Gold River, California for the NCAA Championships at the end of the month.

"Sometimes you have to offer a guy early (who is) out of state to get in the game. I leave more up to the position coaches who understand that area. If you want to get in the game, sometimes you have to do that. I won’t say it’s positive or negative."

-Urban Meyer, via Ari Wasserman, cleveland.com

Urban Meyer and his position coaches have taken a truly national approach to recruiting. While this means that many young prospects across the country receive offers from Ohio State early on in their high school careers, it also means that many native prospects do not receive the same offers until much later in their recruiting cycle.

Meyer has built up the number of incoming freshmen who are not from the state, with less than half of each incoming class made up of players from Ohio. In a state where many of the elite players grow up as Ohio State fans and dream of playing for the Buckeyes, the coaching staff cannot easily afford to fill the class too early and risk losing out on elite recruits from outside Ohio.

Ohio State will generally offer several players in Ohio early, aiming to get the best players in the state in a given recruiting class. But that often means missing out on "second tier" players, who may then receive offers from other schools--like Michigan--and would not receive an Ohio State offer oftentimes until their senior year. While Meyer says that many of these are "fine players," it is simply not feasible to offer 100 players in-state. While the native players are certainly not lower on Meyer’s priority list, however, he is able to get in the game later with these types of recruits who may be considering leaving the state. Michigan commit Leonard Taylor, for instance, received an offer from the Wolverines early on, but now that the Buckeyes have followed up with an offer of their own, Meyer has a chance to bring him to Columbus.

The Ohio State Buckeyes lost 12 players to the NFL Draft, but that didn't dissuade Athlon Sports magazine from ranking them third in its preseason top 25. “The Buckeyes have the fewest returning starters (six) of any Power 5 team,” Athlon writes ...

If the oddsmakers in Vegas are correct, Ohio State will have a very stiff test early in the season.

We're still a long way from the start of the season, but that doesn't mean Vegas hasn't started thinking about who it likes in the biggest games of the year. Per the South Point Hotel, Ohio State is in an unfamiliar place for their early season matchup against Oklahoma. They're listed as underdogs.

South Point Hotel CFB lines: Pitt -9 PSU; ND -6 MSU; OU -9 OhSt; Neb -2 Ore; OU -14 Tx; Ark -1.5 A&M; Bama -3.5 UT; Clem -1 FSU; OSU -6.5 UM

Ohio State isn't used to being listed as an underdog, and certainly not a nine-point underdog. But if you think about it, that line doesn't seem that unreasonable. The game is at Oklahoma, and the Sooners return their quarterback and many key contributors from a team that won the Big 12 and made the playoff last season. Ohio State, on the other hand, returns J.T. Barrett, but must replace key contributors at nearly every position group.

Needing to replace all of that talent isn't enough to make South Point take Michigan over the Buckeyes, though. The Wolverines might be getting a lot of preseason love, but they're listed as 6.5-point dogs to Ohio State for their showdown in Columbus.

ESPN's FPI doesn't think very highly of Ohio State's chances to upset Oklahoma, giving them only a 19% chance at a win. They see the Michigan game as more of a tossup, giving the Buckeyes a 51.6% of winning.

If Ohio State is looking for some bulletin board material for their long slog of an offseason, they need not look very far.

It'll be tough, but a huge sweep of Michigan gives them a chance.

Ohio State baseball's sweep of Michigan over the weekend wasn't just significant because it was Michigan and it knocked the Wolverines out of contention for the regular season Big Ten title. The three game sweep also just might revitalize something that could have justifiably been written off for dead several weeks ago: Ohio State's postseason hopes.

The last few seasons have been marked by inopportune late season and late inning collapses, but this year, Ohio State baseball just might be hitting its stride at the right time. The Buckeyes have won 10 of their last 12 games, including a 10-2 trashing of a ranked Florida Atlantic squad, not to mention the sweep of Michigan, a squad that had also picked up recognition in some baseball polls. Now, Ohio State, (35-16-1), sits in sole possession of 3rd place in the Big Ten standings, and has an outside chance at a regular season title.

Others are stating to take notice. Baseball America wrote this morning that Ohio State has now played themselves right on the tournament bubble.

Bubble might actually be a bit kind, despite Ohio State's gaudy win-loss record and comfortable place in the Big Ten standings. The Big Ten isn't the powerhouse in college baseball that it is for football or basketball, and only three or four teams could secure bids. Ohio State's RPI, while improving, is still far below the typical standard for an at-large team. Right now, Ohio State has an RPI of 76. Last year, the Buckeyes posted an RPI of 46, and still missed the field. Last year, most of the at-large teams had RPIs in the 30s and 40s.

Why is it so low? The Big Ten schedule didn't do Ohio State's computer profile many favors, as the Buckeyes missed many of the top teams in the conference, like Nebraska, Indiana and Michigan State. In fact, Ohio State has only played three games total against the top seven squads in the Big Ten standings, and those were the Michigan games over the weekend.

Ohio State has a few nice out of conference wins (they've beaten a ranked Coastal Carolina team as well as FAU), but most of the non-Big Tens schedule was pretty soft. When you add in a few losses to struggling teams, like Illinois State and Northwestern, and two blown late-inning leads in a series sweep by Maryland, and you can see why the Buckeyes aren't held in higher esteem by the computers.

The good news is, there is time to fix it.

The Buckeyes have just four regular season games left. They have a home game against Eastern Michigan, which is an absolute must-win, and then travel to face the Big Ten leading Minnesota Golden Gophers for the Big Ten season finale. EMU won't give the Buckeyes any brownie points (they're 20-30 and have an RPI of 185), but Minnesota has an RPI of 41. Getting some quality road wins would dramatically improve Ohio State's profile.

They'd also improve Ohio State's Big Ten Tournament seeding situation. The top eight teams in the conference get bids to the conference tournament. Ohio State will almost certainly be there, but things could get complicated if the Buckeyes get swept by the Gophers. A series win would keep them out of the basement, and make things easier on themselves as they try to set up an extended run.

The most direct way for Ohio State to make the tournament would just be to win the Big Ten Tournament and get the auto-bid. Given their middling computer profile, it will be difficult for Ohio State to earn a bid any other way, but it isn't impossible. If the Buckeyes can grab a series win against Minnesota -- or better yet, a sweep -- and pick up a few more RPI top 50 victories in the tournament, they can rehabilitate that profile enough to give the committee something to really think about.

If the Buckeyes struggle against the Gophers, then it's tournament championship or bust.

The road may be narrow, but Ohio State is playing some of their best baseball of the season right about now, and that's a welcome change from previous seasons. Now, they've given themselves at least a chance.
