¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Joey Bosa put his mark on No. 97 at Ohio State. As a three year contributor and two year and change superstar, Bosa became a staple in the opposing backfields of the Buckeyes' opponents.

On Friday night, a day after having his lifelong dream come true and hear his name be called by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on the biggest of stages, Bosa revealed what number he'll be rocking at the next level:

#99

Guess the J.J. Watt comparisons won't be ending any time soon.

The new number definitely suits him, though:

Tanner Tully's strong start and Jacob Bosiokovic's towering home run carried the Buckeyes to victory in West Lafayette.

Ohio State baseball is getting accustomed to close games of late. The Buckeyes were able to hold on for a 3-1 victory against Purdue on Friday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader.

For Ohio State, getting the win in the lidlifter was important, as a sweep of the Boilermakers in this series is badly needed. The Buckeyes, who improved to 6-7 in conference play, are currently on the outside looking in at a Big Ten tournament berth.

In a welcome sight for the scarlet and gray, the top three spots in the lineup came through. Troy Montgomery went 2-for-5, Jacob Bosiokovic, mired in a slump throughout the month of April, was also 2-for-5 and hit a mammoth two-run home run, and Ronnie Dawson remained red-hot, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances.

Lefty Tanner Tully cruised through seven innings, yielding just one run on three hits. The junior ace of the staff struck out five and walked one in improving to 5-3 on the season. It was Tully's team-best sixth quality start in 2016.

For the home team, senior Gavin Downs also pitched well, with one mistake ultimately proving to be his undoing. The right-hander tossed seven innings of three-run ball, the homer by Bosiokovic looming large. Downs scattered eight hits, striking out four and walking two in taking the loss.

Ohio State had ample opportunities early on against Downs, putting runners on second and third with two outs in both the first and third innings, but failed to capitalize.

Purdue went down in order the first time through the order with Tully firmly in command, but the Boilers got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Leadoff man Cody Strong and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Olund. Kyle Johnson then followed that with an RBI single right back up the middle.

In the top of the fifth, though, the Buckeyes bounced right back. Montgomery collected his second hit of the afternoon, a welcome sight after last weekend's 1-for-14 performance, and was followed by Bosiokovic's 10th home run of the season.

An insurance run in the top of the eighth made it a 3-1 Ohio State lead. Bosiokovic singled and eventually came around to score when Troy Kuhn sent a ball through the hole between third and short.

Seth Kinker and Michael Horejsei combined to throw a scoreless eighth and Yianni Pavlopoulos set Purdue down in the ninth for his ninth save of the season.

Game two of the day's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. ET. John Havird will be on the mound for Ohio State against Purdue's Matt Frawley.

usa-today-9273234.0.jpg

It was a night to remember as Decker and four other Buckeyes heard their names called at the NFL Draft.

"John, tell him to write down this name: Taylor Decker"

Lions GM Bob Quinn

After watching the San Diego Chargers, Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants select Buckeyes with their first pick, it was time for the Detroit Lions to do the same.

With the No.16 pick, the Lions went out to get an offensive lineman. It only made sense that they nabbed Taylor Decker.

The Lions posted a video of what was happening the moments before GM Bob Quinn and the Lions pulled the trigger on their pick. After a phone call that included Decker talking to Quinn, head coach Jim Caldwell and majority owner Martha Firestone Ford, the pick was official – and the fourth Buckeye was taken off the board.

"I didn’t take a visit there, and it seemed they had interest in me at the beginning and then it fell off," he said. "It was a huge surprise to me and the best surprise I’ve ever gotten."

Joey Bosa on being drafted to the San Diego Chargers (Columbus Dispatch)

It was known that Joey Bosa was going to be drafted early in the first round. The only questions were when and where. At the No.3 pick, the San Diego Chargers answered both of those questions.

To Bosa's surprise, he would be playing professional football with a lightning bolt on his helmet, and a place that had warm weather that reminded him of home.

"I can’t wait to be on the coast again. I get to go to the beach, get to enjoy the sun, the boat," said Bosa in the story written by Bill Rabinowitz.

Since the day he was recruited to be a Buckeye, the dream was to get drafted. That 2013 recruiting class has shown to be an absolute juggernaut, as Elliott, Darron Lee and Eli Apple all got their named called by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday night.

The quote pulled at the end of the Bosa story is perfect: "I’m sure back then, we all had no idea we would be here getting picked in the first round," Bosa said. "It’s a dream come true."

"OSU grooms its players to play on the next level. If you're a recruit & a little hesitant, don't think twice."

The official Ohio State Buckeyes Twitter account

When you get five members of your squad drafted, it becomes an instant marketing tool. After the 'Buckeye Five' found out what teams they were going to play professional ball for, they sounded off on the effect Ohio State had on getting them to the grandest level of professional football.

As Zeke said, Ohio State gets its players to play on the next level. Lee chimed in and said the facilities are second to none. Also, Lee made a mention about how coach Mick [Marotti] will "get you right".

Strength and conditioning is one of the important aspects to getting athlete's bodies in shape for football. Since Marotti rolled into Columbus under the Urban Meyer regime, bodies have been chiseled, and the performance on the field has reached record breaking levels.

If you were a recruit with NFL ambitions, Ohio State is the place you want to be. Just look at what happened last night.

MotS&G 1st Round of the NFL 2016 Draft: Buckeye Bonanza

1st Round of the NFL 2016 Draft: Buckeye Bonanza
Richard Tongohan

With the recent success with Coach Urban Meyer and his fine coaching staff on the College Gridiron, you almost would be foolish to claim that the Ohio State Buckeyes are one of the more highly regarded College Football Programs in the nation. Without a shadow of a doubt, the Buckeyes have lived up to the tradition and the expectation of excellence and success that many college programs aspire or strive to be. Coach Meyer, the program building architect and his band of excellent coaches have amassed an astounding 50-4 record during their tenure within the Buckeye program. They have effectively restored Ohio State to the powerhouse that the nation and solidifies their place among the other top programs in the nation. With consistent success with recruiting the Buckeyes stay competitive and stay loaded with talent year in and year out, without any drop-off in talent or production. This is only the start of what could be an annual occurrence.

Class of 2013:

The Buckeyes recruiting class of 2013 was by far Coach Meyer’s best and most productive class to date. From top to bottom, the 2013 class became the defining class to Coach Meyer’s legacy, to his legacy as a coach for the Scarlet and Gray. With key players and playmakers moving on in this years draft, they all share memories together and an unbreakable bond with each other. They have experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. They won Big Ten titles together and the Inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship and most recently the Fiesta Bowl against a competitive Notre Dame squad.

Joey Bosa:

The Buckeyes first round dominance was started by the San Diego Chargers and Buckeye Defensive End Joey Bosa at #3 Overall. Many draft pundits were predicting a steep fall down the mid to lower part of the first round, but as we all know, the draft can be filled with twists and turns and pleasant surprises. And this definitely qualifies as a surprise. No one expected the Chargers to pull the trigger on Bosa due to the needs on the Offensive Line, but there was his moment and he would be the first Buckeye taken in the first round. Bosa brings a relentless motor and pass rushing ability as well as the knack for blowing up plays and disrupting timing and wreaking havoc in the backfield. Definitely not a huge need, but it can’t hurt to bring pressure to the opposing Quarterbacks of the AFC West.

Ezekiel Elliot:

At #4 overall, Zeke was removed from the Big Board after Bosa was taken a pick prior. Wow! This was a headscratcher from a needs standpoint. The Dallas defense was in need of an impact player and they passed on Jalen Ramsey of Florida State. The Cowboys signed Alfred Morris to a contract during free agency and the Cowboys still have Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar on deck and many fans were left scratching their heads collectively. There is no doubt that Elliot would be the best out of the bunch and it isn’t even close. Sure Morris has the edge on experience, but I feel that Elliot is far more superior in all aspects of the game. He can run it down defenses throats, he has the speed to pull away in the open field, he can shimmy through the smallest of holes and he can block. He is the full package and he will become an integral part of the Cowboys offense to lessen the burden on Tony Romo. Behind the wall of humanity that he will soon call his Offensive Line, he is a can’t miss prospect because he will be running behind something similar to what he had at Ohio State. The sky is the limit with his potential.

Eli Apple:

At #10, to the New York Giants, Eli Apple will be locking down Wideouts within his division and will see former teammate, Ezekiel Elliot twice a year for the duration of their rookie contracts. It sounds enticing and I am looking forward to the matchup when it comes around. Apple was one half of the Defensive Back Alcatraz, starting alongside Gareon Conley. Never shying away from contact, Apple with wreak havoc and have an opportunity to shut down opposing Wideouts for the next couple of years. Apple can mirror the opposing Wideout, preventing him from breaking away and more times than not, he wins that battle. In the NFC East, a division that has Dez Bryant, Desean Jackson and Pierre Garcon, he will be sorely needed to make stops early and often. I feel that he will fit perfectly into the system alongside DRC and newly signed DB Janoris Jenkins, Apple would be tasked to play the slot man, if he was needed to play right away. Regardless, with time being available he will blossom into a starter as he gets more experience in the NFL.

Taylor Decker:

The Detroit Lions took Decker #16 Overall in the First Round. The Lions will most likely plug him in as a starter with the lack of depth at that position. Decker can play both the pass and the run which makes him valuable. He is not only durable, he is also dependable and he never gives up easily. The Ohio State offense would occasionally lean on him and depend on him to protect the Quarterbacks blindside and he succeeded more often than he had failed. The former Buckeye Team Captain shows the grit and the determination to finish blocks and although he doesn’t have the nasty streak that most people would like to see, he gets the job done. He will lift and reshape an Offensive Line that has struggled for years. Although, he will be playing up north, he will pave the way for Abdullah and company for years and years.

Darron Lee:

With the #20 Overall Pick, the New York Jets took a chance on Lee, a former High School Quarterback and “skinny, pencil necked” Athlete. Ohio State develops players, whether you are highly sought after or an afterthought in recruiting circles. It panned out for Lee and the Buckeyes. The Silver Bullet or the Defensive Missile usually wreaked havoc to opposing offenses throughout his Buckeye career. It will translate easily for Lee in the NFL. He will be called upon to make plays when his teammates are being doubled my offensive lines. With David Harris as the Defensive Quarterback and with Revis Island on one side and a bevy of defensive behemoths throughout the Defensive Line. I think that it is safe to say that Lee has the most ideal scenario to become the most productive out of the five Buckeyes that have been drafted.

So with Round One in the books, I can see a similar outcome during day two of the NFL Draft. With many Buckeye playmakers still waiting to hear their names called, I feel that this would only solidify the Buckeyes both in the College ranks, with recruiting and in the NFL by having so many former players drafted in the draft. It is a perfect storm with exposure and it will only help strengthen the Buckeyes case for years and years. This is always the case with Coach Meyer. You lose the players that you would like to keep, but there are always players that have stayed the path and patiently awaited for their time to shine. They will not waste their opportunity to fill the vacant spaces as they hope to follow the path of the 2103 Buckeyes class. Rounds Two and Three will be an interesting one and more Buckeyes are going to hear their names tonight. Go Bucks!!!

See what we think the future holds for the rest of the massive 2016 Ohio State draft class.

The 2016 Ohio State draft class is special and potentially record-breaking. Filled with possible top-five selections, first round picks and highly conveyed depth players, this class will rival the special Miami draft classes of the early 2000s and could be one of the greatest draft crops of all-time.

There are hundreds of mock drafts out on the internet for the 2016 NFL Draft. But where is the 2016 Ohio State draft class going to be selected? This mock is broken down into where the player should go, based on skill set, draft position, and team need. The second part are other realistic fits, based on team need.

Vonn Bell

Where he should go: Tennessee Titans, second round, No. 33.

Other fits: Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, Tennessee Titans

One could argue that Vonn Bell's commitment on National Signing Day marked the beginning of Urban Meyer's recruiting impact at Ohio State. Bell, a five-star safety from SEC country, surprisingly signed and made his first impact play as a true freshman, picking off Clemson's Tajh Boyd in the Orange Bowl. He improved his following two seasons and became a true ballhawk in the secondary. Bell played more strong safety at Ohio State, but due to his range, he looks like a prototypical free safety in the NFL.

The Tennessee Titans released Michael Griffin and now have holes at both safety positions. They did sign former Arizona Cardinals' free safety Rashad Johnson; however, it was just a one-year deal and Bell would be able to challenge at either safety position. In today's pass-happy NFL, Bell would fit with any team who has a free safety vacancy.

Michael Thomas

Where he should go: New Orleans Saints, second round, No. 42.

Other fits: Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons

Michael Thomas' numbers do not stack up with the other top wideouts, but it was what he did with his chances that makes him a special prospect. Thomas was once just a spring game all-star, then he turned into an excellent route runner, equipped with soft hands. The spokesperson of #Zone6 will bring confidence, route running and the ability to make plays in traffic as a number two or three receiver to the NFL.

The Saints once had an embarrassment of riches, but now outside of Brandin Cooks, they have no true number two option. Thomas would be able to come to New Orleans right away and fight against the likes of Willie Snead and Brandon Coleman for a starting job. He would benefit from playing with one of the top quarterbacks in the league and his ability to gain separation would turn him into one of Drew Brees' favorite targets. There are numerous teams with holes on the outside, including the Bengals, Browns, Texans, Vikings and Falcons, where Thomas would have a chance to be the number two or three guy.

Joshua Perry

Where he should go: New England Patriots, second round, No. 61

Other fits: New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints and Cincinnati Bengals

Starting 39 games, Joshua Perry has been a stable at the SAM linebacker position for Urban Meyer. Perry will bring high character, high intelligence and physical play to wherever he lands. He may not be as athletic as some of the top linebackers in this class, but he has a high football IQ and a nose for the football.

The Urban Meyer-Bill Belichick connection has not always worked out for Belichick, but Perry's character and talent fits a need for the Patriots. New England looks to be changing to a 3-4 defense, where Perry can kick inside next to Dont'a Hightower and challenge Jonathan Freeny for a starting spot. When Hightower and Jamie Collins went down last season, the Patriots' defense struggled. Perry will be able to pick up Belichick's defense quickly and climb the depth chart. If the Giants do not take a linebacker in round one, they could grab Perry right before New England's back-to-back picks at the end of the second round.

Braxton Miller

Where he should go: New York Giants, third round, No. 71

Other fits: Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals

The former quarterback-turned-wide receiver has been all over the place in regards to his draft position. He made the wise decision by switching to wideout and got a year of much needed experience under his belt, but he is still extremely raw. Miller flew up draft boards and was seen as a possible first round pick after dominating Senior Bowl practices and now once the hype has settled, he is seen as a late-second to third round selection.

Miller is the best pure athlete out of all of the wide receiver prospects, yet he route running and hands are somewhat inconsistent. He will strictly be a slot receiver and he should fit next to Odell Beckham Jr. and Victor Cruz. He will not have to make an immediate impact and he can also learn from two of the better route runners in the NFL. Miller would succeed in the Giants' west coast offense, where he could run shallow crossers and slants. Other teams that would be able to accommodate Miller's skill set would be the Chiefs, Eagles, Bills and Bengals.

Nick Vannett

Where he should go: San Diego Chargers, third round, No. 66

Other fits: Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers

In a watered down tight end class, Vannett's name has been thrown around as one of the first tight ends off the board. Underutilized at Ohio State, the tight end has a nice mix of size (6'6, 256 lbs), combined with soft hands and a willingness to block. It took him five years to start, but he made the most of it and performed well during the draft preparation season.

With Antonio Gates aging quickly and the departure of Ladarius Green, Vannett seems like the obvious TE2 in San Diego and the eventual heir to Gates' thrown. Vannett will bring some physicality to the Chargers' run game, while also giving Phillip Rivers another red zone target. The Packers and the Steelers would also make sense, as he could compete versus Richard Rodgers in Green Bay and he would provide better blocking than the newly acquired Green in Pittsburgh.

Adolphus Washington

Where he should go: Buffalo Bills, third round, No. 117

Other fits: Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals

The former five-star recruit was viewed as a first round pick at various times throughout his excellent senior season, but his post-season arrest and subsequent Fiesta Bowl suspension have dropped Washington down the big boards. After playing the nose guard position to free up Michael Bennett in 2015, he slid over to Bennett's playmaking tackle position in 2016, and he was purely dominant.

Rex Ryan is not one to shy away from players who do not have a squeak clean record, and especially if that player can rush the passer. Washington fits Ryan's 4-3 attacking defense that is desperately looking for an interior pass rush to go along with Marcel Dareus. Uncharacteristically, Ryan's front-seven was not able to generate much pressure last season and adding a player with Washington's quickness and talent would sure up those issues. The Rams are a 4-3 team that would welcome Washington's interior depth and he has been linked to the Titans and the Cardinals throughout the draft process.

Tyvis Powell

Where he should go: Pittsburgh Steelers, fourth round, No. 123

Other fits: Tennessee Titans, Baltimore Ravens and Seattle Seahawks

Powell was one of the few surprises to leave early; however, his length and ball-hawking abilities fit with today's NFL. Powell is not overly physical, but he will be a nice depth piece as a coverage focused free safety. Powell will bring energy and leadership, and he should fit into any locker room.

For as talented as the Steelers are at throwing the ball, they are quite the opposite at defending the pass. Powell would be able to learn from veteran free safety Mike Mitchell and get on the field in nickle or passing situations. The former Sugar Bowl Defensive MVP could also provide depth or challenge to start in Tennessee or Baltimore. Seattle could be a darkhorse for Powell to back-up the oft-injured Earl Thomas, while also learning from one of the best free safety's in the game.

Cardale Jones

Where he should go: Arizona Cardinals, fifth round, No. 168

Other fits: Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys

What a difference a year makes. After leading the Buckeyes wins over Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon, Jones was seen as a very intriguing NFL prospect and a first round lock. Scouts and draft pundits drooled over his Ben Roethlisberger-like size, rocket arm and mobility, and some even had him as the first quarterback taken in the 2015 draft. Then, Jones decided to not strike while the iron was hot and return to school to compete for the starting quarterback position. After an up-and-down senior season, Jones' stock has plummeted and he could be selected anywhere from the third to the sixth round.

Jones' best situation would be to sit for a couple of years behind a quality NFL veteran and learn how to become a professional, both on the field and in the locker room. The Arizona Cardinals would be a great fit for "12 Gauge," as he can sit behind Carson Palmer and learn the ropes. Palmer becomes a free agent in 2018, which would give Jones two years to study from one of the NFL's best quarterbacks. The Steelers and the Cowboys would be similar situations for Jones, but the Bills would give him a chance to start earlier, with quarterback Tyrod Taylor set to hit free agency in 2017.

Jalin Marshall

Where he should go: Kansas City Chiefs, seventh round, No. 249

Other fits: Washington, Cincinnati Bengals

Due to the departures of wide receivers Michael Thomas and Braxton Miller, most Buckeye fans questioned why Marshall decided to turn pro, since he would have been J.T. Barrett's number one target in 2016. Marshall will be limited by his size, lack of straight-line speed and ball security issues; which is why he will be a final day selection, or a priority free agent. His biggest issue is that although he does do a few things well, he does not do anything great. Marshall will be drafted or signed by a team who lacks quickness from the slot and a punt returner.

The Chiefs have a little speedster in D'Anthony Thomas, but behind Jeremy Maclin, they have little-to-no depth at receiver. Marshall could compete right away in Kansas City as the fourth or fifth wideout and the starting punt returner. Washington and the Bengals are also two teams in similar situations as the Chiefs and they would be two other options to draft or sign the former Buckeye.

Tommy Schutt

Undrafted free agent

Fits: Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills and Carolina Panthers

Schutt is in a tough situation after his final season was cut short by injury and his lack of an invitation to any scouting-based bowl game. The 6'2, 295 lb defensive tackle will be a priority undrafted free agent with some upside to stick onto a 4-3 team deep into training camp.

Chase Farris

Undrafted free agent

Fits: Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers

Those four teams are the most tackle-needy teams in the draft and Farris could serve as a training camp body.

Yes, there is some football related stuff going on this week, but it’s been a pretty eventful (in a good way) week for Ohio State women’s golf. Information gleaned from Ohio State Women’s Golf site.

The Buckeyes are (again) headed to the NCAA Regionals. This will be the 23rd time in Coach Hession’s 25 years as head coach. (I’d say that’s consistent success.) They will head west to the Stanford Regionals, to be played May 5-7. The top six teams advance to the NCAA tournament.

You can bet that I’ll have coverage of the Regionals. Please check back.

All-Big Ten Selections

Well, they done done it, again. By “they”, I mean juniors Katja Pogacar and Jessica Porvasnik. By “it”, I mean they have earned All-Conference recognition.

For the third time in as many seasons, Ohio State junior classmates Katja Pogacar and Jessica Porvasnik have picked up All-Big Ten recognition. In 2016, both Buckeyes are members of the All-Big Ten First Team, the second such distinction for each. Pogacar makes the First Team for the second straight year after placement on the Second Team as a freshman in 2015. Porvasnik, meanwhile, began her career as a ‘14 All-B1G First Teamer and has returned to the top classification after receiving Second Team honors in 2015.

Katja is averaging 73.06 strokes per round, Jessica is averaging 73.45 strokes. Depending how the courses they played on in their last seven rounds are sloped/rated, I’d guess that Katja and Jessica are carrying a handicap index of close to scratch, maybe even a ‘plus’ handicap. That’s very good.

Congratulations to Katja and Jessica.

New Recruit

Additionally, there is the great news that the team has a top-notch recruit committed to be on campus for the 2016-2017 season, Alex Wright.

“We are thrilled to add Alex to our team for the Class is 2016,” Hession said. “She is a solid player and a great young lady. Coach (Lisa) Strom and I look forward to continue helping Alex develop her game and grow as a person. Welcome to Buckeye Nation.”

Here’s the scoop on young Alex; this is a pretty impressive CV. The Buckeyes will field an experienced mix of accomplished seniors next season (Zoe-Beth Brake, Katja Pogacar, Jessica Porvasnik), a junior (Rio Watanabe) and tested sophomores (Jaclyn Lee, Niki Schroeder). This is a nice situation for young Miss Wright to step into.

tBBC Making The List: Kelly Ann Baird

Kelly-150x150.jpg

With the warmer months upon us for whatever it is that propels my decision making I have decided to go toward the choice of a swimmer in ‘Making the List’ for this week. It seems logical. Swimming is a fantastic sport and it’s very thought refreshes us from the onslaught of heat that will soon be boring down onto us as summer arrives.

Kelly Ann Baird was born and raised in Lexington, North Carolina, attending West Davidson High School. It was there that she swam as a distance freestyler – decorated as a 10-time state champion and a nine-time All-American. She would be voted as the most valuable swimmer three times during her high school career. In 2009 she was a member of the Junior Pan Pacific Team. In 2010 she would be included as a member of the National Youth Team

Kelly came to The Ohio State University in 2011. As a freshman she had first-place touches in the 200 freestyle and 200m backstroke in her first meet as a Buckeye versus Kenyon (Oct. 30); recording victories at Ohio University (December 2011) and the Shamrock Invite (Jan. 28-29, 2012) in the 100 and 1650 freestyle, respectively. She competed in the 2011 Big Ten championships in the 1650 freestyle with a team best time of 16:26.52.

As a sophomore (2012) Kelly ranked first on the Buckeye depth chart in three events – 500 m freestyle, 1000 m freestyle and 1650 m freestyle. She placed seventh at the Big Ten championships in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:15.20 – also competing in the 500 m freestyle at the Big Ten, finishing at # 8. She would be one of ten women on The Ohio State University’s team to qualify for the NCAA championships. She competed at NCAAs in the 1650 m freestyle as well as the 500 m freestyle. There she posted nine individual wins, increasing her career total to 15.

As a junior (2013): Kelly held The Ohio State University’s fastest time in two events – 1000 m and 1650 m freestyle and was part of the 200 m medley relay, which finished fourth at the 2013 Big Ten Championships in a time of 1:37.89. She also competed in the 200 freestyle, 500 m freestyle and 1650 m freestyle at the Big Ten Championship – earning two personal best times over the course of the season: 50 m backstroke (27.66) and 200 m freestyle (1:49.30).

Kelly Ann Baird was primarily a distance freestyle specialist and qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 400 m freestyle, 800 m-freestyle and 200 m-backstroke. She successfully squared points in three Big Ten Championship meets in her Buckeye career.

Just short of completion of a four-year swimming career at Ohio State, Kelly Ann Baird – her senior year she failed to reach the finals in any of her events and earned no points at the Big Ten Championships. This was the first time this ever occurred in her life. She was them approached by Ohio State Women’s Rowing Coach Andy Teitelbaum approached her – offering her an opportunity to row for the Buckeyes.

She was far from over!

Baird would recall: “Leading up during that whole season, I was supposed to make it to the NCAAs,” Baird said. “I was doing really well, and my times were the best they’d ever been. Every athlete wants to finish her career on a high note and know she put it all in the pool. My teammates knew I tried my best, but for me, it just was not enough. It was sad to leave the sport on a note like that.”

Rowing, then, must’ve been looking good.

“The first day, I just could not figure it out,” she said. “I was thinking, ‘This is never going to work.’ These girls had their very first race in a few weeks, and I’m in their boat messing up their practices.”

But Baird quickly went from hopeless to helpful. She even discovered how to overcome the typical rookie mistake that causes a boat to drop dead in the water, known as catching a crab.

“You’re supposed to feather the blade as you pull it toward you to make it parallel to the water. But if you do it too quickly, it gets caught underwater,” Baird said. “The whole boat has to stop for that one person to get her blade out. But I got really good, to the point where I was able to get my blade out quick so the boat wouldn’t stop.”

Baird went on to race novice in the Big Ten Championships, finishing third to earn her first collegiate sport medal. The team as a whole took first, and each member received a championship ring. Her frustrations over the way her swimming career ended dissipated.

The mind shift was complete. When Baird swam relays, the strongest, fastest athletes were chosen. In rowing, the women who can best move the boat in unison make the cut.

Kelly continues to hold the record for the Women @ The Ohio State University in the 1,000 m Freestyle: 9: 46.94 set in 2012

In the 1,650 Freestyle she lists as 2nd: with a time of 16:15.20 – also set in 2012

Kelly Ann Baird to me represents a strong spirit that is driven by perfection. She was the best at swimming during her involvement. When that time came to an end she did not just sit back and relish on past memories. She made new ones – and in a new sport. Kelly Ann Baird is the definition of what it is to be a Buckeye. She has that fight in her heart and soul that will have her successful in all that she decides to do. She is deserving of recognition as a great Buckeye and I am proud to include her – How in the world can I not?

The Buckeyes' Big Ten tournament hopes are dwindling. A sweep of the Boilermakers in West Lafayette this weekend would be huge.

If ever there was a time when the Ohio State baseball team was in need of a series sweep, it's this weekend. And if ever there was an opponent against whom it could be possible, it's this one.

In a tie for 10th place in the Big Ten at 5-7, and finding themselves on the outside looking in at the conference tournament, the Buckeyes are hitting the road for a three-game series against Big Ten cellar dweller Purdue.

Ohio State fell short in its attempt at getting a series win against Illinois last weekend, and its proverbial back is up against the wall in regards to the team's postseason aspirations. With the final three Big Ten opponents being Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota, the Buckeyes must take care of business against the Boilermakers in West Lafayette to have even a shred of hope of making it to Omaha next month.

The series loss to the Illini stings, as it was winnable. Ohio State outscored Illinois 12-7 in the three games, and once again got very solid starting pitching from the trio of Tanner Tully, John Havird, and Adam Niemeyer. Tully put in his finest performance of the season with nine innings of shutout ball on Friday, and Havird yielded just one earned run on Saturday despite lacking the sharpness he had displayed in his previous few starts. Niemeyer was simply done in by two bad innings.

The offense continues to be the question mark for the scarlet and gray. Nine of the team's 12 runs in the series were scored on Saturday, which kind of skews the results. Junior Ronnie Dawson continued his recent tear, going 7-for-15 in the series, driving in four runs and scoring three. Senior Nick Sergakis also had a good series, with a 4-for-10 showing and two RBIs.

Where there is concern in the lineup is at the top. Junior leadoff man Troy Montgomery was just 1-for-14 against the Illini and redshirt junior Jacob Bosiokovic had to be dropped from the two-hole he has occupied all season due to his recent slump. Bosiokovic also exited Sunday's loss after an apparent injury on the basepaths.

In a nutshell, the Buckeyes have a lot riding on this weekend's series. If they can manage a sweep of Purdue and get a little help in the form of losses by the four teams directly in front of them in the standings (Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, and Maryland), postseason hopes will remain alive. That's a lot of "ifs," but it's the reality of the situation Ohio State will find itself in for the remainder of the season.

Purdue Boilermakers (7-31, 2-13 in Big Ten play)

It's a down year for Purdue head coach Doug Schreiber, who is in his 18th season at the helm in West Lafayette. The Boilers are being outscored by nearly three runs per game in 2016, and simply cannot keep opponents off the bases. Both offensively and defensively, Purdue is ranked at or near the bottom of the conference in nearly every meaningful statistical category.

That said, Schreiber's squad has taken a game from both Michigan State and Maryland the past two weekends, so pulling a sweep will certainly not be a given.

With a collective .253 batting average, good for last in the Big Ten, the Boilermakers' lineup appears to be just what Ohio State's pitching staff wants to face. But there are a few dangerous spots in the lineup that Tully, Havird, and Niemeyer will need to be leery of.

The 2-3-4 spots in the order feature seniors Kyle Johnson, Kyle Wood, and Brett Carlson, each of whom is putting together a very solid final collegiate season. Johnson leads the team with a .320 batting average, 49 hits, and 26 runs, to go along with 10 doubles, six home runs, and 27 RBIs.

Wood is the Big Ten's leader in homers, having hit 10 longballs to this point. The first baseman is hitting .263 with 10 doubles and a team-high 29 RBIs.

Hitting cleanup is Carlson, a former transfer from Austin Peay who is in his second season with Purdue. After playing his way into the everyday lineup, Carlson has put up a .307 average with nine doubles, two homers, and 14 RBIs.

The matchup with the Boilers' pitching staff should be a welcome sight for a Buckeye offense that has really struggled in Big Ten play. Purdue's hurlers carry a collective 5.83 earned run average and allow a .314 opponents' batting average. The three starters Ohio State will see this weekend are a combined 2-10 with an ERA just under 5.00.

Friday's first starter Gavin Downs is 1-3 on the year, sporting an ERA of 5.27 and being hit around at a .302 clip. A senior right-hander, Downs has a 1.51 WHIP and just two more strikeouts than walks.

Fellow senior righty Matt Frawley will take the ball in game two on Friday, and has fared slightly better than Downs. Frawley is 1-4, but leads all Boilermaker starters with a 3.18 ERA, to go along with a better than 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a .264 batting average against.

On Sunday, Shane Bryant will be on the bump, another senior right-hander. Bryant is 0-3 on the season with a 6.55 ERA and .341 opponents' batting average in ten appearances, four of which have been starts.

With just four weekends remaining in the regular season, this is the time that Ohio State must come alive. A sweep of Purdue is hugely important for the Buckeyes in both the standings and from a momentum standpoint. If the team is to keep its streak of Big Ten tournament appearances going, it will have to play its best baseball of the year down the stretch, starting on Friday afternoon.

The first round is in the books. Of this year’s 31 first round selections, five of them were Buckeyes. Here’s a “Who, When, Where, Why” look at Thursday’s events.

Who: Joey Bosa

When: 3rd Pick

Where: San Diego Chargers

Why: Bosa is, in my opinion, the best edge rusher in the Draft. The NFL is a passing league, so the more a team can do to take away one offensive dimension from its opponent, the better chance it has to win. Bosa is versatile enough to move inside and, as we saw in the 2015 UN game, is athletic enough to drop back in zone coverage. In addition to his primary skill, pass rushing, Bosa gives a defensive coordinator some scheme flexibility.

Who: Ezekiel Elliott

When: 4th Pick

Where: Dallas Cowboys

Why: Zeke takes his rock hard abs to Dallas’ soft machine. He joins Darron McFadden and fellow Buckeye Rod Smith in the Dallas backfield, and is (at this moment) one of six running backs on the Cowboy roster. Elliott has the skills to contribute immediately and and versatile enough to be a 3-down back. This removes situational guesswork and could open another roster spot for Dallas.

Who: Eli Apple

When: 10th Pick

Where: New York Giants

Why: The Giants have several cornerbacks on the roster, however they allowed almost 4,800 yards passing, last in the league. Picking a top DB is probably a good place to start for the Giants to correct that problem.

Who: Taylor Decker

When: 16th Pick

Where: Detroit Lions

Why: The Lions need to upgrade their offensive line. In anything “O-Line” related in 2015, Detroit was abysmal. They were last in the league in rushing, 10th most sacks and 9th most ‘QB hits’. They need to keep Matthew Stafford healthy and to create a functional running game. Somewhere, Joe Dexter is smiling…

Who: Darron Lee

When: 20th Pick

Where: New York Jets

Why: The Jets already have a good defense, but I think this pick was geared towards one thing; offsetting New England’s offense. At linebacker, the Jets have a ‘need for speed’ and Lee can provide that. He can rush off the edge; in coverage, he can stay with running backs, tight ends and slot receivers. He is a 3-down linebacker for the Jets. Additionally, he is athletic enough to be able to “spy” and tack Buffalo’s mobile quarterback, Tyrod Taylor. This was a pick to specifically help the Jets win the AFC East.

What say you?

MotS&G Any 2015 Buckeyes Going To Be 2016 Browns?

Any 2015 Buckeyes Going To Be 2016 Browns?
Chip Minnich
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

Growing up in the Cleveland area, I have memories of the Cleveland Browns that are quite vivid. I will passionately argue that The Fumble hurt far more than The Drive. I remember being so disgusted when the Browns traded Chip Banks and drafted Mike Junkin. And I proudly wear and own a Brian Sipe jersey, having been in the stands for Sipe’s last game as a Brown versus the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1983, before Sipe jumped to the USFL.

The heartaches and frustrations of the Cleveland Browns fanbase are too many to write; it is painful enough that I remember them. One of the most puzzling decisions the Browns have made since their NFL return in 1999 has been to continually ignore and neglect selecting players from Ohio State.

Yes, I know that the Browns have former Buckeyes Brian Hartline and Terrelle Pryor on the roster. Former Buckeye Simon Fraser played for the Browns as an undrafted free agent from 2005-2007. And I also remember that the Browns drafted former Buckeyes Darnell Sanders in 2002 and Brian Robiskie in 2009. But that’s it – 2 players on the current roster, with a grand total of 5 Buckeyes from 1999 through 2015.

Compare and contrast that with the Pittsburgh Steelers. From 2001, when the Steelers selected Rodney Bailey in the sixth round, the Steelers have picked a total of 8 Buckeyes. The most recent selection was in the 2015 NFL Draft, when Pittsburgh picked Doran Grant in the 4th round. Mike Adams, Doran Grant, Cameron Heyward, and Ryan Shazier are all on the Steelers roster – considering Grant grew up in Akron, and the Browns have a need at cornerback, wouldn’t it be nice to see Grant playing for Cleveland instead of Pittsburgh?

Back to my point. With so many talented Buckeyes in the 2016 NFL Draft, could the Browns wise up and improve their roster with some Buckeyes?

I will quickly add that I do not believe all of the Buckeyes would make sense for the Browns. For example, while Joey Bosa should be a tremendous pro, the Browns are running a 3-4 defense, which would transition Bosa from a 4-3 defensive end to a 3-4 outside linebacker. I am not sure if that would be in Bosa’s best interests as a pro. Besides, I do not believe Bosa will even be on the board for the Browns to pick.

Could Vonn Bell be in the Browns’ draft plans?

I'm told #OhioState safety Vonn Bell has (or has had) meetings, workouts and/or visits with the #Browns, #Bucs, #Lions and #Saints.

— Rand Getlin (@Rand_Getlin) March 25, 2016

Wouldn’t it be nice if the Browns selected Michael Thomas in the second round? How about Nick Vannett in the third round? On day 3 of the draft, picking Jalin Marshall late in the sixth or seventh round? Chase Farris? Tyvis Powell?

Hue Jackson is the latest Cleveland Browns head coach to try and turn around this once proud franchise. A good place to start is to add players from about two and half hours south on I-71.
