The Buckeye dominance of the NFL Draft continues.

In case you haven't heard, the Ohio State Buckeyes are dominating the 2016 NFL Draft. The Buckeyes had three of the first 10 overall picks in the draft, and set a record Friday night with the most picks in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft with 10 players selected.

The first defensive player off the board was defensive end Joey Bosa at No. 3 overall to the Chargers. The Buckeyes then covered cornerback at the No. 10 overall pick in Eli Apple to the New York Giants. The Buckeyes had a pair of linebackers, Darron Lee at No. 20 to the Jets, and Joshua Perry to the Chargers at No. 102. Safety Vonn Bell went to the New Orleans Saints with the 61st pick, and defensive tackle Adolphus Washington went to the Buffalo Bills at No. 80.

The Buckeyes defense was one of the team's greater strengths from the 2015 season, and to see the majority of them drafted within the first 102 picks was a fitting end to their Ohio State careers.

One Buckeye announces the draft of another.

The NFL Draft has been great for the Ohio State Buckeyes, and early Saturday afternoon, the fun continued for the Bucks, as Joey Bosa announced the Chargers' fourth-round pick at No. 102.

That pick ended up being former Buckeye teammate, in linebacker Joshua Perry. The pair of Buckeyes will now be helping anchor a defense in San Diego that is in need of young talent such as Bosa and Perry.

The two are now the second pair of Buckeyes to join the same team, as Michael Thomas and Vonn Bell were both drafted by the New Orleans Saints on Friday night.

On and off the field, Perry will succeed in San Diego (or LA).

The Chargers were looking for a leader on the field and in the locker room, which is what they got with Joshua Perry and the No. 102 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Perry was a vocal leader for Ohio State during their National Championship run, and was also a familiar face among the community.

Perry finished his collegiate career having recorded 296 total tackles, 18 for loss, 7.5 sacks and an interception. He recorded 124 of those tackles during the 2014 road to the National Championship, earning second place in the Big Ten in total tackles. Perry had a career night late that season against Penn State, where he amassed 18 tackles on the night. His tackling ability and athleticism combined with his passion, will force opposing offenses to account for him when drawing up their schemes.

The fan favorite was invite to participate in the Senior Bowl following the 2015 season, but was forced to sit out with a hamstring issue. He rehabbed well and was able to workout at the NFL Combine, where he was a top performer among linebackers in the broad jump at 124.0" and ran a 4.68-second 40-yard dash. The 6'4, 254-pound Buckeye proved he's a productive tackler and is well-conditioned to play through the fourth quarter.

In addition to his on-field success, Perry is a fan favorite for his off-field character. He was named an all-state AFCA All-Good Works Team member, and was a finalist for the Lott IMPACT, Senior CLASS Award, and the Wuerffel Trophy, and also earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors.

The Ohio State defense has been recognized as one of the more talented groups in the country this season. It’s also been criticized at time for the amount of big plays they’ve given up throughout the first half of the season.

This week, the staff at The Buckeye Battle Cry ponders in our weekly roundtable if Ohio State the intricacies of building such a talented program that blossoms into NFL talent.

Question: What does this draft class say about Urban Meyer and the Ohio State staff’s ability to develop players compared to recruit them?

Ken Kohl
On Twitter @KenKohl1

Of the 13 players leaving (hopefully) for the NFL, as college recruits:three were 5*, six were 4* and 4 were 3*. Let me state that that with an average “star rating” of almost 4 – Urban is a pretty good recruiter of talent, regardless of position. However, I think this is a testimony to player development under Urban.

The 5* players were Vonn Bell, Adolphus Washington and Braxton Miller. I’d say that Vonn produced at a level I would expect for a highly rated recruit. A-Wash was a solid position performer. Not spectacular, but solid. Braxton was spectacular until his injury. After that he was an afterthought. Overall, the 5* recruits produced at expectation.

The 4* players were Ezekiel Elliott, Joey Bosa, Joshua Perry, Jalin Marshall, Taylor Decker and Eli Apple. This list is loaded with regionally and nationally recognized players. I’ll just say that this group met/exceeded performance expectations.

The 3* players were Tyvis Powell, Michael Thomas, Darron Lee and Cardale Jones. Tyvis and Darron were consistently among the top defensive play makers the past two seasons. Michael developed into an intriguing, reliable offensive play maker. Jury is still out on Cardale. When properly tutored in the championship run, he was very effective. When he wasn’t, he was benched. For a bunch of “average” recruits, three of them developed very well and at lest two of them will earn big paychecks in the NFL.

I think that Urban starts with a pretty high level of talent. He improves this by top notch nutrition/physical training support staff and very effective position coaches; Johnson, Warinner, Smith, Fickell, Coombs… This is topped off by creating and communicating an expectation to the players they need to bring their best effort to everything they do. This “need to succeed” mindset served the players well in Columbus and is a selling point to their future employers.

Charles Kuehn:
On Twitter @Charles_BBC

This is definitely an impressive draft class and that is almost always a result of both good recruiting and good player development. If we judge a coach’s recruiting based on the star ranking of the recruits they bring in, a rather dubious practice due to nature of trying to uniformly and properly evaluate all high school recruits, then Meyer is clearly one of the best in the country based on his classes ranking at the top of the country annually. However being a highly rated recruit does not guarantee that a player gets drafted in one of the early rounds or even drafted at all. Looking at the 2015 NFL draft, the first round had 8 players who started out as five star recruits, 7 four star recruits, 16 three star recruits, and 1 two star recruit. This certainly shows that player development is more important that recruiting rankings coming out of high school. Thus, it is a major testament to Meyer and his staff’s player development that so many OSU players are expected to go in the first round of the draft.

Of course, we can also tie the player development back to recruiting in that Meyer and his staff identified players that were not only talented but ones who could improve from the system in place at OSU. In the end, it is hard to say whether this year’s draft class is more a result of recruiting or player development as the two are related.

Scott Halasz
On Twitter@OhioStateScott
I think Taylor Decker is the perfect example of how he developed the seniors. He was not very polished as a freshman but he has gotten so much better. He went from someone I thought could be benched to someone who could start week 1 in the NFL.

I’m undecided on the underclassmen however, except for a couple. Jalin Marshall is not ready and there are a couple more. But the fact that they could be drafted based on potential speaks to the overall quality of the program as well as Meyer’s ability to recruit.

Michael Smith
On Twitter @CWGBuckeyes35

I honestly think it speaks more to Meyers recruiting than anything else. When you look at the draft class nearly all of the players are either 4 or 5 star recruits. The player who developed the most under Meyer has been Tyler Decker. Decker wasn’t all that good when Meyer came to town now Decker is poised to be a 1st round draft pick.

JC Collingsworth
On Twitter @Jcollingsworth3

Urban Meyer is one of the top-everything in College Football today. In most discussions around the nation the top tier names mentioned are Meyer & Saban. Other names follow … but these are the two mentioned first.

There are reasons for this. The consistency in top recruitment and development speaks volumes – resulting in the top-echelon pay that they receive. That’s why I am confused about the Harbaugh solution up at TTUN … he is far from a proven commodity.

Evidence of development under the Meyer rule is Michael Thomas, Darron Lee, and Cardale Jones. Each of these players were 3-star recruits and shined brilliantly in their careers at The Ohio State University.

It takes a Village … nice saying with so much truth to it. In the instance of recruiting and development at The Ohio State University it clearly deserves a nudge to mention the wondrous talent around Coach Meyer that assists in the successes that has come out of The Shoe. The Coaching Staff, Johnson, Smith, Coombs & Fickell to mention a few are deserving of notice. The Ohio State University too deserves credit. They allow and finance the whole shebang. They bring in the talent by allowing one of College Football’s reigning superior minds to call Columbus home.

Meyer’s appetite for exhibiting might on the grandest scale in the vision of a group of young men is exceptional and worthy of complete respect. His skills and positivity summoned a trust in some of Tressel’s recruits having them realize their full potential and turned three-star recruits into important members in both the construction of his program and winning the first ever College Football Playoff National Championship when many throughout the Land thought they did not even belong.

But no matter the contributions of his staff … ultimately it is always about the one in charge. Because if all fell apart and the recruitment well dried up then Urban would be sent packing. His word his final – and thus far throughout his career he has proven why he is one of the best – perhaps in the history of College Football.

So in conclusion – I am clearly biased. I think Urban would be as successful even if he were at Appalachian State.

I had to toss that in for all of our TTUN spies wondering what is happening on the sunny side of the street.

Brandon Zimmerman
On Twitter @bzimmerman9

When looking at this recruiting class, it’d be pretty easy to just chalk it up to Urban Meyer’s ability to recruit. The fact is, if you recruit enough top-ranked prospects you will ultimately wind up with numerous players drafted. But I think this is lazy and a disservice to the wonderful coaching staff Meyer has had over the last couple of years. Sure, getting top players year in and year out helps but there are many teams around the country who get top players and do not develop them into first round draft picks. In this draft, Meyer and his staff developed anywhere from five to seven first round draft picks. That is simply amazing.

To take a better look at the development, let’s look at the Top-5 recruiting rankings from the last couple of years.

2012 CLASS

RANKING SCHOOL POSSIBLE 1st ROUNDERS (2016)
1 Alabama 1 (Class did have 2015 1st rounders)
2 Texas 0
3 Florida State 0 (Class did have 2015 1st rounders)
4 Florida 0 (Class did have a 2015 1st rounder)
5 Ohio State 2 (Spence excluded)

2013 CLASS

RANKING SCHOOL POSSIBLE 1st ROUNDERS (2016)
1 Alabama 2
2 Ohio State 5
3 Florida 1
4 Michigan 0
5 Notre Dame 2

I realize this is just a brief snapshot of two years but it shows that simply getting top-ranked players on to campus is not a guarantee to producing top-level NFL talent. A school like Florida is a good measuring stick for Ohio State because they finished very similar in both classes to Ohio State. While they are looking at two first-rounder draft picks in these two classes, Ohio State is looking at possibly seven first round picks. The ability to not only bring in top level talent but to also develop them into NFL caliber players is what separates the Urban Meyers and Nick Sabans of the world from the James Franklins of the world.

Joe Dexter
On Twitter @BuckeyeRadio

My biggest takeaway in the correlation of Ohio State’s talent and development in this draft class is just how much it shows that Urban Meyer has learned to trust his assistant coaches and allow them to have a major impact on these players.

For every Joey Bosa, who is expected to be a star, there is a coach like Larry Johnson — who became the biggest football mentor he’s had to this point. That relationship helped blossom a player into the true talent that everyone expected see. More importantly, it propelled him into being one of the greatest defensive players in school history.

For every Darron Lee, who one coach is willing to go to bat for, there is a coach like Luke Fickell. Head coach Urban Meyer didn’t buy into the benefit of offering the former New Albany quarterback a scholarship. Yet, he trusted in his defensive coordinator and his due diligence. He understood that his staff is talented enough to develop the three-star commit into a top 15 pick in the NFL Draft.

These coaches trust in each other to put the best on the talent.

Going about it different ways is imperative in order to tap into building the best players in the country. This draft class is a pure example of why teams and college programs can never leave any stone unturned.

And what happens when coaches go all in on players they believe in.

The Buckeyes got great pitching and clinched a series win on the road against the Boilermakers.

It wasn't easy, but the Ohio State baseball did what needed to be done on Friday, winning both games of a doubleheader against Purdue. The Buckeyes escaped with a 3-2 win in the nightcap to clinch the series victory and pull to .500 in Big Ten play at 7-7.

The key now will be for the boys in scarlet and gray to finish off the series sweep.

Ohio State got great performances on the mound from senior John Havird and freshman Ryan Feltner. Havird allowed two runs on four hits in five innings of work, walking one in improving to 5-1 on the season.

Feltner tossed four scoreless innings in relief to earn his second save of the year, yielding just three hits and one free pass while striking out three, and coming up huge in a sticky situation in the ninth inning.

Purdue put the tying run on third base with one out, but a strikeout of Cody Strong and a great play on a groundball in the hole off the bat of Alec Olund by shortstop Craig Nennig delivered Ohio State the win.

The Boilermakers hurlers were on their game as well. Senior starter Matt Frawley allowed three runs, only one of which was earned in five innings, scattering six hits while walking two and striking out three in a tough loss. Junior Eddie De LaRiva and sophomore Tanner Andrews combined to throw four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.

Redshirt junior Jacob Bosiokovic continued a great day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with an RBI to cap a 5-for-10 doubleheader. Senior Troy Kuhn added two hits of his own to help lead the charge offensively.

As was the case in the first game of the day, Purdue drew first blood in this one. Strong led off with a triple into the left-center gap and came home on a groundout by Olund for a 1-0 lead.

The Buckeyes came back with a crooked number in the top of the second, sending eight men to the plate and taking a 3-1 lead. It was all of the run production they would manage all game.

Kuhn and Tre Gantt singled back-to-back to open things up and, after Ryan Leffel struck out, a Nennig hit by pitch loaded the bases. Jalen Washington hit into a fielder's choice to Strong at second that scored Kuhn, leaving men on the corners with two outs.

Troy Montgomery then sent a groundball towards the hole between third and short that carromed off the glove of Brett Carlson, allowing Gantt to score. Bosiokovic followed that up with a solid base hit up the middle which brought Washington plateward.

The Boilers cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI single by Nick Dalesandro, but it just wasn't enough.

The finale of the three-game set is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET on Saturday. Adam Niemeyer will be on the bump for the Buckeyes against the Boilermakers' Shane Bryant.

The tight end is looking forward to contributing at the next level.

Despite a limited number of receptions at Ohio State, tight end Nick Vannett was able to show enough talent in the time since his final snap of collegiate ball to hear his name called by the Seahawks with the No. 94 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. His blocking ability, along with his performances at the Senior Bowl, NFL Combine and Ohio State's pro day, were enough to jettison the under-the-radar tight end up to the third round.

Analysts didn't start paying attention to the tight end until the week of senior bowl practices, where he was then given the moniker of "Baby Gronk", a nickname he's since proudly embraced, although admitting, "I'm not as crazy as him, though".

The 6'6, 257-pound tight end chose not to run the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, but impressed with other drills like the 3 cone drill (7.05 sec) and 20-yard shuttle run (4.20 sec). He finally ended up running the 40 in front of scouts from all 32 NFL teams at Ohio State pro day, where he ran a 4.85.

His workouts at all three pre-draft events landed Vannett among the top tight ends in the 2016 class. He will need to be more agressive as a blocker in the League, but has the talent and athleticism to do so. As his role in the Seattle's offense becomes clearer, he may need to work on his route-running and his running technique after the catch, but could see a lot of snaps due to his versatility.

Braxton Miller's elite athleticism and willingness to be a great teammate will only make him more successful in the NFL.

With only one year of wide receiver experience under his belt, Braxton Miller's elite athleticism and unlimited ceiling allowed him to be drafted by the Houston Texans with the No. 85 pick in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Miller had one of the most decorated and respected careers in the vast history of Ohio State football.

Miller came to Ohio State as one of the best quarterback recruits in the country, started as a true freshman and was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year in 2012 and 2013. After dominating the Big Ten as a quarterback for two-and-a-half seasons, he face off against Clemson in the 2014 Orange Bowl, where he left it all on the field and hurt his throwing shoulder in the process. Miller got himself ready to begin his final campaign and leave Ohio State on a great note; however, he re-injured his throwing shoulder just weeks before the first game of the 2014 season. Miller sat on the sidelines in a sling while he watched his two backup quarterbacks lead the Buckeyes on a magical run, that ended in a national championship. With both backups returning to school for the 2015 season, Miller had a choice to make; would he head to the NFL, compete against the two quarterbacks, or change positions to wide receiver, where he could showcase his athleticism.

He took the selfless approach by switching to wide receiver for his senior season, which also helped him become a legit NFL prospect.

In his first game as a wideout versus Virginia Tech, Miller had nine touches for 140 yards and two highlight-reel touchdowns. Although he was underutilized and put into odd situations (obvious keeper plays) after that initial game, Miller showed enough in his limited targets to gain an invite to the Senior Bowl, where he flourished in practice. The former quarterback made the opposing cornerbacks look like high schoolers, as Miller turned them around on the regular and shook them out of their cleats.

At the NFL Combine, the 6'1", 204 lb athlete ran a disappointing 4.5 40-yard dash, but the wide receiver group as a whole struggled in that department. He bounced back by showing his quickness in the agility drills. His three-cone of 6.65 seconds, his 4.07 20-yard shuttle and his 10.84 second 60-yard shuttle all were top performances in his group. Also, he improved his 40-yard dash to 4.41 seconds at the Ohio State pro day.

The former Buckeye has the basics down and the natural athletic ability to become a great slot receiver soon; but his route running, his ability to gain separation and his hands will all need to become more consistent before he is a go-to receiver. Miller's future wide receiver coach will be able to mold him like clay and he will hopefully become one of the most feared slot receiver's and punt returner's in the NFL.

The defensive tackles was strong in the middle for Ohio State the past two years.

Not only does Adolphus Washington have size, measure 6'3 and 301 lbs, but he also is explosive off the snap, which is why Buffalo has selected Washington in the third round with the 80th pick of the 2016 NFL Draft. After registering just a 5.17 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, Washington better that number at Ohio State's Pro Day, running a 4.95 40-yard dash. Add in the his length, with a 34 1/2" arm length, and Washington has the measurables which could allow him to make a name for himself in the NFL.

Adolphus Washington came to Ohio State as a five-star defensive end from Taft High School in Cincinnati, but he was also was the Gatorade Basketball Player of the Year in Ohio after he averaged 23.1 points per game and 14.3 rebounds per game during his senior season. Despite seeing limited time during his freshman year in Columbus, Washington still was able to make a little noise, registering three sacks as Ohio State went 12-0 in Urban Meyer's first year as head coach.

After showcasing some of his skills during his freshman year, expectations were high for Washington heading into his sophomore season. Things didn't quite turn out as planned, with Joey Bosa and Noah Spence earning the starting defensive end positions, leaving Washington to again see limited action. In just five starts for Ohio State, Washington recorded just four tackles for loss and two sacks.

The turning point for Washington came prior to his junior season when Ohio State hired Larry Johnson as their new defensive line coach. Washington was moved to the interior of the defensive line where he teamed with Michael Bennett to create a stout middle of the defensive to compliment what Bosa was doing at defensive end. Washington finished the year with 10.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks, as the Buckeyes won the College Football Playoff.

Before his senior season, Washington slid over to the position Bennett had occupied the year before. Washington notched 49 combined tackles, seven tackles for loss, and four sacks in 12 games. The highlight of the season for Washington came against Western Michigan when he intercepted a pass and returned it 20 yards for a touchdowns. There also was a pretty big lowlight for Washington in early December, when he was cited for solicitation and suspended for the Fiesta Bowl.

Since then Washington has been working hard to atone for the lapse in judgment, not only directly answering any questions about the incident at the Senior Bowl, but also doing the same at the NFL Combine. Washington also tried to let his performance on the field speak for itself, as he had a very strong showing while at the Senior Bowl.

The Buckeyes have tied an NFL Draft record.

It was expected that the Ohio State Buckeyes would be involed in some history during the 2016 NFL Draft, and they tied some on Friday night, after Michael Thomas and Vonn Bell were drafted to the New Orleans Saints in the second round.

With the picks of Thomas and Bell, the Buckeyes have the most picks in the first two rounds in a single draft in the common era. The Buckeyes had Joey Bosa, Ezekiel Elliott, and Eli Apple all go in the first 10 picks of the draft. Taylor Decker, and Darron Lee also went in the first round.

This is certainly a great selling point for Urban Meyer and his program, who have had quite the successful past couple of seasons with a College Football Playoff National Championship, and a Fiesta Bowl victory.

The great thing is, there are surely more Buckeyes to come as the NFL Draft moves along.

Go Bucks!

Vonn Bell brings confidence and a knack for the big play to the NFL.

Vonn Bell will be bringing his big-play ability and his range in coverage to the [TEAM], after he was selected No. #61 overall in the second round.

One could argue that the Rossville, GA native kicked off Urban Meyer's recruiting dominance at Ohio State when he committed to the Buckeyes on National Signing Day, signing with them over multiple SEC schools. His big-play ability shined as a true freshman, when he picked off Clemson quarterback Tahj Boyd with one hand in the red zone during the 2014 Orange Bowl. His knack for the big moment showed again, when he picked off Alabama quarterback Blake Simms on the goal line in the 2015 Sugar Bowl.

The former 5-star is a natural free safety who played more in the box at Ohio State, but will be a pure free safety in the NFL. He has the range and athleticism to play centerfield in Cover-1 and can match up in the slot. He is not going to play in the box often in the NFL, but he is a willing and above average tackler in run support.

The 5'11", 199 lb safety was unable to run at the NFL Combine due to a hamstring injury, but he did finish with 16 reps on the bench press. He healed up and was able to compete at Ohio State's pro day, where he ran a 4.51 40-yard dash and jumped 30 1/2 inches on the vertical.

Overall, Vonn Bell is the perfect free safety for today's pass-happy NFL, with his ability to roam in the secondary from sideline-to-sideline.

And you still won't be able to guard him.

He's arguably the most complete wide receiver prospect in the entire 2016 NFL Draft, and now Michael Thomas will be playing on Sundays with the New Orleans Saints. The Saints selected Michael Thomas with the No. 47 pick, giving Thomas a new place to call home, and build a career in the NFL.

Thomas has been on the eyes of pro scouts ever since 2014, especially after his stellar performance against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl, where he made his signature catch in the corner of the endzone against defensive back Cyrus Jones. In 2015, Thomas had 56 receptions for 781 yards and nine touchdowns, and was without a doubt the Buckeyes' best receiver.

The standout receiver not only has the build of an NFL wide receiver, but has a complete game. He's a great pass catcher, using his hands as opposed to his body, and had a great receiving range, being able to catch the simplest of passes, to going over the back of a defender. If there's a ball up for grabs, he's likely coming down with it.

Thomas measured at 6'3 at the NFL Combine, weighing in at 212 pounds. Questions were raised about his touches, but he didn't show concern, watched film, and did his job. He ran a 4.57 in his 40-yard dash, and a Buckeye receiver best 18 reps on the bench press. He's a complete, and pro-ready prospect. If the Saints able to develop him properly, Thomas should be a good receiver for plenty of years.
