The Buckeyes and the Bills seemed to have struck up a mutually beneficial relationship in this year’s NFL Draft. As tBBC’s Western New York Correspondent©, I may be able to delve a bit deeper into this relationship.

The Bills are an original franchise team of the AFL and began play in 1960. They are entering their 57th season of play. For a team to play, it needs players. What is the historical connection, in terms of the NFL Draft, between the Bills franchise and the Buckeye “franchise”? Let’s take a brief look of ‘what was’, then look at ‘what is’.

Until the 2016 Draft, there had been only 17 Buckeyes drafted by the Bills, so the connection is not necessarily deep nor strong. Here are the Buckeyes the Bills drafted, including this year. Let’s just say the draft history of Ohio State and Buffalo has been “on again, off again” for both parties. Some were selected during the joint/competing NFL/AFL drafts in the ’60’s. Some Some players had solid tenures in Buffalo. Some were with the Bills for a couple years; others for a cup of coffee..

Year RD Player Pos
1960 1 Birtho Arnold OL
1960 1 Jim Houston E
1962 20 Sam Tidmore E
1963 23 Bob Middleton E
1964 4 Paul Warfield WR
1965 1 Jim Davidson T
1966 18 Greg Latushtka E
1971 2 Jan White TE
1974 8 Greg Hare QB
1979 1 Tom Cousineau LB
1995 3 Marlon Kerner DB
1999 1 Antoine Winfield DB
2001 1 Nate Clements DB
2001 7 Reggie Germany WR
2004 3 Tim Anderson DT
2006 1 Donte Whitner DB
2006 3 Ashton Youboty DB
2016 3 Adolphus Washington DT
2016 4 Cardale Jones QB

I have a couple observations:

  • The Bills were fairly unsuccessful when drafting Buckeyes when both leagues were competing for talent. Maybe the players felt their skills were better honed for the more button-down NFL approach to the game. Maybe they were more comfortable with what they felt was a more stable situation in the NFL. Who knows?
  • As you see, there were a few stretches where Buckeyes were not drafted by the Bills, notably from 1980-1994 and 2007-2015. For NFL teams, draft day can be hit and miss. You hope for more “hits” than “misses” and you hope your “hits” are big ones. A quick scan of the Bills draft day history showed some sketchy decision making.
  • The few draft “hits” of Ohio State by Buffalo were probably in the position group of defensive back. There didn’t seem to be an attraction by Buffalo to OSU defensive linemen, and let’s face it: Ohio State isn’t ‘Quarterback U’.

So, how do the 2016 Buckeye draftees fit in? I gave a hint in the weekend draft recap. Let’s look a bit deeper. First up:

Adolphus Washington

Adolphus was selected by the Bills with the 17th pick of the 3rd round. Per my recap:

The Bills defense went from “great” in 2014 to “abysmal” in 2015, particularly in the realm of sacking the quarterback. A-Wash can provide an inside burst that was lacking last year. I doubt that Adolphus starts, initially, but I can see him in the DT rotation with Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams. Although “only” 32 years old, Williams is oldest player on Bills roster. AWash may rotate into the starting lineup if all goes well.

But there’s really more to it than that. There was a fair amount of turmoil for the Bills, particularly on the defense last year with the change in defensive philosophies. Former defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz ran a fairly simple to implement aggressive approach and the defense prospered. Rex Ryan takes over as coach and installs “his” defense, which according to player comments was complicated, confusing and passive. Perhaps, but a lot could be that it may take more than a year for a defensive philosophy to sink in.

Adolphus wont’ have his life cluttered with this philosophical change. For him, it’s all new; he has no bad habits to extinguish. On Buffalo’s defensive line, Kyle Williams brings steady play-making to the team, but he’ll be entering his 11th season. I do see Adolphus getting a legitimate shot to work into the starting lineup of Williams/Dareus. Although I think that AWash needs to work on being a bit stouter against the run, his quickness at point of attack is important and can’t be taught.

Next, the pride of Glenville High School:

Cardale Jones

When: 4th Round, 41st Pick

Where: Buffalo Bills

Cardale was selected by the Bills with the 41st pick of the 4th round. Per my recap:

The Bills have two QB’s on their roster; Last year’s starter Tyrod Taylor and former #1 pick EJ Manual. Tyrod was somewhat effective as a starter, but there is doubt if he is the long term answer. EJ is probably a functional back-up. His problem was that he was drafted too high, which created expectations that he in no way could fulfill. With Cardale going in 4th round, time has been bought for his development. Plus, his strong arm will be an asset on throwing in late season Lake Erie winds.

A few minutes after this selection, a brother-in-law texted me that he “loved the pick”, along with various ‘heart’ and ‘thumbs up’ emoticons. The next morning, another brother-in-law emailed me looking for “the book” on Cardale.

Strong armed kid, mobile in the pocket. when he makes a mistake, he has a “short” memory – he gets back in the huddle and rallies the team. His skill set didn’t mesh that well with Ohio State’s fast-tempo zone read philosophy. He’s mobile enough to keep pass plays alive. He doesn’t have quick sideline-sideline mobility, but is very good at downhill running once he breaks contain. I think that Cardale will be a better professional than college QB. He and his girlfriend have a toddler (daughter) so Cardale does have some serious motivation to make this work.

A 4th round pick is about right for him. He’ll need a year or two of tutoring. He may be the QB the Bills expected to get when they drafted EJ..

Obviously, Bills General Manager Doug Whaley is of similar mind.

“We think our situation’s good for him,” Whaley said, via the Buffalo News. “He’s going to come in and be a three, be able to develop, be able to learn under some professionals that have been at their craft for a while, with EJ and Tyrod.

“We like his skill set. He’s got the talent to possibly be a franchise guy. Is he there yet? Absolutely not. He’s got a lot of work and a lot of ways to go. But this guy’s driven, this guy’s a proven winner; he’s undefeated.”

I anticipate Adolphus and Cardale to have solid NFL careers, hopefully with the Buffalo Bills. Maybe this creates more “Buckeyes -> Bills” situations, we’ll see. Regardless where their travels take them, they will be contributors to their teams.

It may just be a coincidence, but there is a strong tradition of former Buckeyes with the New Orleans Saints.

"He and I have been friends for a long time. I think [that] matters some...Urban and I came up out of the Midwest at the same time. He was at Colorado State as an assistant and I was at San Diego State recruiting the same areas, and over the years [we] have just always kind of stayed in touch."

-New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, via Mike Triplett, ESPN

Of the dozen former Ohio State Buckeyes selected in last weekend’s NFL Draft, two went to the New Orleans Saints in the second round, thereby making up 40 percent of the Saints tiny draft class. Wide receiver Michael Thomas, who went No. 47 overall, and safety Vonn Bell, the 61st-overall pick, are continuing a tradition of Buckeyes in New Orleans--a sentiment that has been put in sharp relief with the passing of former Buckeye and Saint Will Smith. Former Saints players tweeted their support of the picks and of Smith following the selection of both Thomas and Bell. Linebacker James Laurinaitis, another former Buckeye who joined the Saints in the offseason, also offered his support to the younger Bell via Twitter.

While Thomas and Bell address the Saints needs on both sides of the ball, the fact that both came from the same school and were selected in the same round could just be a coincidence. However, in head coach Sean Payton’s words, it doesn’t hurt that he and Urban Meyer have a good relationship, having recruited the same areas in the past as college coaches.

Bell has impressed the Saints throughout the scouting process, delivering on several of Payton’s requests for more information and film--a request that Payton himself did not task lightly. While the fact that the Saints traded up for Bell might be questionable, there is little doubt that Bell was a steal at No. 61 overall, or that he was a strong pick for a team who ranked consistently at the bottom of most defensive statistical categories last season.

And while analysts may critique the Thomas pick, as he does not play defense, the departure of Marques Colston means that the Saints need to add another big receiver to complement the smaller Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead.

"This is such a good feeling right now. I am so proud of the team and what they have accomplished. Today is the reason why you put in all the long hours. For them to get to run out and celebrate is a feeling they will never forget. They deserve this."

-Ohio State women’s tennis coach Melissa Schaub, via BTN.com

In a culmination of two outstanding seasons, both the Ohio State men’s and women’s tennis teams won their respective conference tournaments over the weekend, capping undefeated Big Ten slates for both squads. Though both teams had already earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament, with the conference champion determined based on regular season schedule, the tournament championship is still a cherry on top of a fantastic year.

For the women, who are ranked No. 5 nationally, this year’s tournament title is the first in program history, having lost in the finals twice previously. After a first-round bye as the No. 1 seed, Ohio State defeated ninth-seeded Wisconsin 4-0 to move on to the semifinals. The Buckeyes followed up with another sweep of No. 4-seed Illinois and a trip to the finals, where they downed third-seeded Michigan by a score of 4-2 and avenged the loss in last year’s tournament finals to the Wolverines. With the win, the team has won 13-straight matches heading into the NCAA Tournament, and are 28-2 overall on the season. This tournament berth is the Buckeyes’ third straight, and 13th in program history.

The No. 4 men’s squad has also been on a roll, having won its last 14 matches, including three in the conference tournament, en route to a 30-2 overall record. After downing Nebraska 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament, the Buckeyes backed up their strong performance with another sweep over No. 24 Michigan in the semifinals. The men then capped off their tournament with a 4-1 win over No. 17 Illinois, who had defeated the Buckeyes in last year’s finals, to earn their 11th Big Ten Tournament title, and the ninth in the last 11 years.

The fields for both the men’s and women’s NCAA tournaments are scheduled to be announced Tuesday.

"Just the signing bonuses alone, which range from Bosa’s projected $17,017,226 to Jones’ $383,393, have an expected total of $60,526,660. Unless a player does something to cause his contract to be voided, signing bonuses are theirs to keep."

-Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

Urban Meyer may have the ultimate recruiting trump card in his hand in the form of NFL rookie contract totals--a nine-digit number encompassing the projected contracts for the dozen Buckeyes taken in this weekend’s NFL Draft.

With the most picks through four rounds in the history of the draft, those Buckeyes taken have high earning potential early on in their NFL careers--a number totalling more than $111 million on the low end if the draftees play through their contracts. Though the full dollar value of the contract is not guaranteed, the signing bonuses on their own make up a hefty portion and are themselves a tempting pitch for recruits.

Defensive end Joey Bosa and running back Ezekiel Elliott, the No. 3 and No. 4 overall picks, respectively, are projected to earn more than $50 million combined in their four-year rookie contracts, while the five Buckeyes who went in the first round (cornerback Eli Apple, No. 10; offensive lineman Taylor Decker, No. 16; and linebacker Darron Lee, No. 20) are projected to earn a total of $87 million combined over the life of their contracts.

While these numbers put Urban Meyer and Ohio State at a massive advantage nationally, they help to raise the intra-conference recruiting bar to a nearly unreachable level. With just one other Big Ten player taken in the first round in Michigan State offensive tackle Jack Conklin, who was drafted No. 8 overall, the Buckeyes have effectively shown the earning power of coming to Ohio State to potential recruits.

"We like his skill set. He’s got the talent to possibly be a franchise guy. Is he there yet? Absolutely not. He’s got a lot of work and a lot of ways to go. But this guy’s driven, this guy’s a proven winner; he’s undefeated."

-Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley, via Vic Carucci, The Buffalo News

Former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones is perhaps this draft’s most prominent boom-or-bust prospect. After being selected in the fourth round (and tearing his shirt in the process), Jones commented on how excited he was to be playing for "one of the top organizations in the NFL."

Bills general manager Doug Whaley sees the potential in Jones to grow and develop under E.J. Manuel and Tyrod Taylor in Buffalo. With such a big upside in the potential to be "the franchise guy," the 139th pick seemed to be a steal for Jones. In Whaley’s eyes, the worst case scenario is that Jones winds up the solid No. 2 quarterback, and the fourth (basically fifth) round is a good value for a backup. Despite criticism of Jones ranging from his accuracy to his ability to read coverages, Whaley seems to have full confidence in his ability to grow into an NFL-caliber quarterback, citing his more than 60 percent completion percentage. Combined with Jones’ powerful arm, which will come in handy in the windy winter weather in Buffalo, his poise in the pocket and his ability to extend plays with his legs, Jones would seem to be a natural fit in Buffalo’s system. With an 11-0 record as a starter--the best winning percentage for an Ohio State quarterback--Jones is a proven winner, especially against great teams such as those faced in the inaugural College Football Playoff in 2014.

For college football fans that love their Ohio State Buckeyes, the NFL season got more intriguing this weekend.

Overall, 13 former Ohio State Buckeyes (including Noah Spence) were selected by NFL teams.

So far, two other former Ohio State players have signed as undrafted free agents as well. Combine that with the already strong contingency of Buckeyes in the NFL, and the 2016 season becomes intriguing for all of Buckeye Nation.

Here is a top look at Buckeye vs. Buckeye match ups during the upcoming NFL season.

Week 1

Thursday, September 8 — Carolina Panthers at Denver Broncos (8:30 PM ET NBC): Not only do fans get to relive the Super Bowl, they also get another strong taste of Ohio State football. Last time around, the OSU story line was Bradley Roby vs. Ted Ginn Jr. and Philly Brown. This time, you can add Kurt Coleman vs. Jeff Heuerman and DeVier Posey to the mix.

Sunday, September 11th — New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys (4:25 PM ET FOX): The two rookies pitted up against each other. Ezekiel Elliott faces off with his former teammate Eli Apple during the first week of the season. I can picture it now. The NFL world is introduced to the greatest Ohio State draft class with Zeke and Rod Smith exploding for 200+ yards on the ground and Eli picking off a Tony Romo pass to win the game. The off-kilter throw being caused by big Johnathan Hankins.

Week 2

Thursday, September 15 — New York Jets at Buffalo Bills (8:25 PM ET CBS): It’s still hard for me to picture Adolphus Washington trying to smash through Nick Mangold. Also in the mix potentially is Cardale Jones at quarterback for the Bills. Jalin Marshall has a good shot at making the Jets roster and Devin Smith will try to go over the top of Rex Ryan’s defense.

Sunday, September 18 — New Orleans Saints at New York Giants (1:00 PM ET Fox): Eli Apple vs. Michael Thomas. Vonn Bell against Odell Beckham Jr. or Rueben Randle. Enough Said.

Week 3

Sunday, September 25 — San Fransisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks (4:05 PM ET Fox): The first edition of Nick Vannett vs. Carlos Hyde. Two bulldozers who can have an instant impact offensively.

Sunday, September 25 — San Diego Chargers at Indianapolis Colts (4:25 PM ET CBS): Joey Bosa against Jack Mewhort could be fun at times, especially if the Chargers coaching staff plan to twist their top pick inside at times for better matchups.

Week 4

Sunday, October 2 — Seattle Seahawks at New York Jets (1 PM ET Fox): If Tyvis Powell makes the roster, he could play a huge role in covering Jalin Marshall underneath. Also, Nick Vannett might try to become his worst nightmare.

Sunday October 2 — New Orleans Saints at San Diego Chargers (4:25 PM ET Fox): I’d love to see Josh Perry have a huge game against the Saints run game, that is doing everything it can to improve. Something about Joey Bosa pass rushing Drew Brees gives me goosebumps. Especially if he can evade the pressure and get the ball to Michael Thomas.

Week 5

Sunday October 9 — New York Jets at Pittsburgh Steelers (1:00 PM ET CBS): Are you kidding me? Two of the best Ohio State linebackers in school history competing against each other’s opposing offenses? Ryan Shazier and Darron Lee will be fun to watch. The comparison between the two has been thrown out there tons of times during the draft process. Let’s see if the comparison sticks.

Monday October 10 — Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Carolina Panthers (8:30 PM ET ESPN): I’m cheating a little here but Andrew Norwell trying to stop Noah Spence? All I’ll say is if Spence moves inside, I’m giving the edge to Norwell (Go ahead, call me crazy!). This game could also feature three former Ohio State receivers in Ted Ginn, Philly Brown, and Evan Spencer.

Week 6

Thursday October 13 — Denver Broncos at San Diego Chargers (8:25 PM ET CBS): The story line in pregame for this one will be focused on the emergence of Joey Bosa and Brad Roby. It will also possibly feature Joshua Perry trying to stop former Buckeye TE Jeff Heuerman.

Week 7

Monday, October 24 — Houston Texans at Denver Broncos (8:30 PM ET ESPN): Braxton Miller vs. Brad Roby??!? It’s a very good possibility with Miller playing in the slot and Roby slotted at free safety.

Week 8

Sunday, October 30 — Detroit Lions at Houston Texans (1:00 PM ET Fox): This will be a great development game to see where the likes of Braxton Miller and Taylor Decker stand.

Sunday, October 30 — Seattle Seahawks at New Orleans Saints: There are so many good nuggets here. Can Vonn Bell keep Jimmy Graham in check against his former team? Will Michael Thomas studder-step the Legion of Boom into a group face plant?

Sunday, October 30 — San Diego Chargers at Denver Broncos II (4:25 PM ET CBS)

Week 9

Sunday November 6 — Dallas Cowboys at Cleveland Browns (1 PM ET Fox): EZE returns to Ohio to take on the team that probably would have passed on him if he fell to number 8 in the draft. Poor Cleveland fans….

Sunday November 6 — Colts at Packers (4:25 PM ET CBS): If you are a nerd that loves the trenches, this one is for you. Corey Linsley and Jack Mewhort will battle to protect their respected quarterbacks in the game being called, “Luck vs. Rodgers II”.

Monday, November 7 — Bills at Seahawks (8:30 PM ET ESPN): I hope Cardale Jones is starting at this point and that he gets the opportunity to carve the Hawks. Can you tell I’m not a big fan of Pete Carroll?

Week 10

Sunday, November 13 — Broncos at Saints (1:00 PM CBS): Heck yes — an aerial attack on both sides led by Ohio State players and defensively, secondaries that depend on former Ohio State players.

Sunday, November 13 — Cowboys at Steelers (8:30 PM ET NBC): Does it get better than a longtime rivalry between two even teams in primetime? It sure does. Especially when the key match up will be Ryan Shazier vs. Ezekiel Elliott.

Week 11

Thursday November 17 — New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers (8:25 PM ET): Receivers for days. Receivers for days.

Sunday November 20 — Eagles at Seahawks (4:25 PM ET CBS): Malcolm Jenkins will have a chance to guard Nick Vannett.

Week 12

Sunday, November 27 — Chargers at Texans (1:00 PM ET CBS): I hear Joshua Perry and Joey Bosa have agreed not to double team Braxton Miller.

Week 13

Sunday December 4 — Panthers at Seahawks II (8:30 PM ET)

Sunday December 4 — Giants at Steelers (8:30 PM ET ): Eli Apple and Ryan Shazier on the same field. Enough said.

Sunday December 4 — Lions at Saints (1:00 PM ET FOX): TDeck vs. Vonn Bell and Michael Thomas.

Week 14

Sunday, December 11 — Steelers at Bills (1:00 PM ET CBS): Mike Adams will try and stop Adolphus Washington in the trenches. This could be a war of epic proportion.

Sunday, December 11 — Chargers at Panthers (1:00 PM ET FOX): This game will have a total of six former Buckeyes on the field.

Week 15

Sunday, December 18 — Steelers at Bengals (8:30 PM ET NBC): Is it a stretch to use a kicker match up in this game? Mike Nugent might play a role people! (After last year’s playoff game, I want to see this again).

Week 16

Monday December 26 — Detroit Lions at Dallas Cowboys (8:30 PM ET ESPN): A late Christmas present for fans will be Ezekiel Elliott running all over my favorite team’s defense. Hopefully Taylor Decker can get the lanes open for the rushing attack of the Lions to balance things out..

Week 17

Sunday January 1 — Buffalo Bills at New York Jets II (1:00 PM ET CBS)

Sunday January 1 — Seahawks at 49ers II (4:25 PM ET Fox)

2016 SCHEDULE LOOK AHEAD: BOWLING GREEN AT OHIO STATE
Eric Seger on May 16, 2016 at 8:35a @ericseger33

They say you should never forget where you came from, otherwise you won't figure out where you're headed. Or something like that.

Urban Meyer is scheduled to heed some similar thoughts like that throughout training camp and during the first game week of Ohio State's 2016 season. His Buckeyes host Bowling Green, the university that gave the man his first head coaching job, Sept. 3 at Ohio Stadium. Meyer went 17-6 from 2001-02.

The matchup isn't for another 109 days (depressing, isn't it?), but we thought it wouldn't hurt to start looking ahead at Ohio State's 2016 slate. The Falcons are up first and the remaining 11 opponents on the schedule will follow in the coming weeks.

Let's get to it.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State football will play four consecutive night games during the 2016 season, the school announced on Monday.

The Buckeyes will play:

• at Wisconsin, Oct. 15, 8 p.m.
• at Penn State, Oct. 22, 8 p.m.
• vs. Northwestern, Oct. 29, 5:30 p.m.
• vs. Nebraska, Nov. 5, 8 p.m.

All four games will be aired on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.

The game at Penn State had already been announced as Penn State's annual "White Out" game at Beaver Stadium, and it will be the fifth straight time the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions play in primetime.

This comes from ESPN's release of Big Ten night games on its networks. It's possible the Buckeyes could have more than four night games, including one on Big Ten Network and the Sept. 17 game at Oklahoma. The Big Ten Network will announce its night games at a later date.

It's on.

As has become tradition, Urban Meyer's Ohio State Buckeyes will have a heavy prime time flavor this coming fall.

In a release from ESPN, it was confirmed that the Buckeyes will be playing four straight prime time games. Beginning Saturday, Oct. 15 in Madison, WI, the 2016 Bucks will begin a four-game slate spanning three states, each in prime time on one of three ESPN affiliated properties:

October 15 at Wisconsin (8 p.m. EDT on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2)
October 22 at Penn State (8 p.m. EDT on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2)
October 29 vs. Northwestern (5 p.m. EDT on either ESPN or ESPN2)
November 5 vs. Nebraska (8 p.m. EDT on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2)

The Buckeyes in recent years have had as many as five prime time games and with scheduling still to be determined, it's not impossible they'll have more.
