Buckeyes in 2016: Six super sophomores to watch

When Ohio State won the national championship in 2014, it was a group of players from the 2013 recruiting class that helped put the Buckeyes over the top. Second-year players who played key roles on that team included sophomores DE Joey Bosa, RB ...

Former Ohio State offensive lineman Chase Farris ready to rejoin Taylor Decker on the Detroit Lions

Chase Farris signed as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Lions, pairing back up with his Buckeye teammate Taylor Decker.

"When you go into the free agency process, you really want to do your research on where you have your best chance of seeing the field. You don't want to go somewhere where you might have practice squad hopes or something like that. And I felt the Lions really gave me the best opportunity to get on the field as fast as possible."

- Chase Farris via Dave Birkett, Detroit Free Press

Former Ohio State offensive lineman Chase Farris was one of the few handful of Buckeyes not to be taken in the 2016 NFL draft, but still was able to find a new team to call home. The Detroit Lions called Farris up and signed him as an undrafted free agent following the draft, bringing Farris to Detroit with his former Ohio State teammate Taylor Decker. Decker was drafted by the Lions with the 16th overall pick in the first round. Now the two former Buckeyes will get a chance to team up in Detroit and help protect quarterback Matthew Stafford. While Farris was one of four total linemen that the Lions drafted, he feels confident that this team gives him one of the best spots to compete for playing time.

Though Farris played right tackle for Ohio State last season, he's said that he's looking to be as versatile as possible for the Lions and is focused on being able to play both inside and out on the offensive line. After working out with Decker at LeCharles Bentley's offensive line academy in Arizona, and then a workout together for the Lions, Farris felt comfortable with his chances about ending up with the team. He might not have been drafted, but Farris still got a $10,000 signing bonus and another $10,000 guaranteed of his salary in 2016.

"Ohio State made a seamless transition from Carlos Hyde to Ezekiel Elliott the last time it had to replace a superstar tailback. The Buckeyes may do so again, but the picture after spring is not so clear cut as when Elliott ascended."

- Brian Bennett, ESPN

When examining the biggest question marks for Ohio State following its spring camp for the 2016 season, one of the key positions that stand out is at running back. The Buckeyes lost Ezekiel Elliott to the draft, who was an All-American at the position. Returning running back Bri'onte Dunn enters the year as the senior and was thought to be an early favorite to win the job. But with having to sit out here and there with some injuries this spring opened the door for freshman Mike Weber to take a shot at the starting spot. And although Weber displayed his ability in the spring game, the coaching staff hasn't been too convinced it's his job to lose.

Dunn and Weber have been 'neck-and-neck' throughout camp in a position battle that will surely rage on in fall camp and potentially could see split time between the pair during games should one not emerge outright as the lone starter. The good news for Ohio State is that another position, the defensive line spots, seem to be strong as ever, or at least, aren't giving much of a drop-off. With members including Sam Hubbard, Jalyn Holmes, Tyquan Lewis, and Jashon Cornell, the line is set up to be another strong position group this fall.

"27. Cincinnati Bengals - Raekwon McMillan, LB, Ohio State. 31. Seattle Seahawks - Pat Elflein, OG/OC, Ohio State."

- Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com

If you haven't had enough of the NFL draft, there's already a mock draft for the 2017 draft class. It's no surprise that Ohio State made a couple of spots on the list, either. Linebacker Raekwon McMillan is the first Buckeye mentioned on the mock, and it makes sense considering the expectations for the junior are fairly high for the upcoming season. Should he anchor the linebacking core for the Buckeyes and have an excellent season, it's entirely possible he jumps to the next level. The leader on defense for 2016 had a strong showing in 2015 as the starting middle linebacker for Ohio State. He did share the load with Darron Lee and Joshua Perry, however, and will now be looked at as one of the stars on the defensive side of the ball.

The second and only other Buckeye to make it on the mock draft was offensive lineman Pat Elflein. The offensive guard is switching to center for Ohio State this season and returned to help improve his overall ability. He could have declared for the 2016 NFL draft but instead returned to the team to gain experience and gain some versatility for the next level. One of the top returning starters, Elflein is projected to go 31st overall to the Seahawks in this mock draft, though it being so early, there's plenty of time for movement along the projection board.

MotS&G Why Ohio State cannot be discounted against Oklahoma

Why Ohio State cannot be discounted against Oklahoma
JT Perry
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

Ohio State will be replacing twelve 4th round or better players in 2016, including the heart of both their offense and defense in Running Back Ezekiel Elliott and Defensive End Joey Bosa. How does a team meet the lofty expectations, placed on them by a needy fan base, after losing so much talent from the following year? Development is the quick answer and, lucky for Ohio State, it is something that the coaching staff is quite accomplished at doing. The talent is on the Ohio State roster, which is something that we are well aware of, after Ohio State has signed top-3 class after top-3 class. The biggest question is how will young players react in a hostile environment when they have never played a meaningful snap in a real college football game? That answer will almost certainly be evident on September 17th in Norman, Oklahoma.

The third game of the season, against the Oklahoma Sooners, is the one that everyone has circled on their calendars. The game is a great bet to be a primetime game on ABC and Ohio State will most likely be the considerable underdog going into it. Oklahoma, who brings back Heisman candidate Quarterback Baker Mayfield, will be at least a top-5 team at the time, and may even be the number 1 team, if things go their way. The reason that I believe Ohio State has a great chance to take care of business in Norman is Baker Mayfield. How can Oklahoma’s star Quarterback be the decisive key to a game in the other team’s favor? The same way that Baker Mayfield was a key for Clemson and Texas getting wins against the Sooners in 2015. Mayfield struggles against pressure in his face from a relentless pass rush. Ohio State may be replacing key figures in Joey Bosa and Adolphus Washington, but Defensive Line coach Larry Johnson, has recruited like a mad man and is one of the best at developing the prospects into NFL caliber linemen. Reflecting back on the spring game, you saw the Quarterbacks being swallowed up on a consistent basis by young guys, such as Jashon Cornell and Davon Hamilton. Granted some of this may have been due to a depleted offensive line playing in the game, but I believe some of these young tackles will complement the returning ends of Sam Hubbard and Tyquan Lewis, to lay feast to Baker Mayfield that night.

Oklahoma will look to also establish the run against Ohio State with their two returning backs, who have been very impressive in action previously, in Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon. This is the element of Oklahoma’s offense that could potentially doom the Buckeyes. Although the rushing stats against the Buckeyes defense last year was not terrible to say, there were times where teams had much success running the ball between the tackles against Ohio State (see Western Michigan and Michigan State games). The key to shutting down Samaje and Mixon again will be the physical mentality of the defensive line. Redshirt Freshman Robert Landers is a guy that could be a key factor in plugging the middle for the Buckeyes. Another guy, who you might see play some of the 3 technique, is true Freshman Nick Bosa. Does that name sound familiar? Yes, Nick Bosa, who is Joey Bosa’s little brother, will see some time at the 3 technique this season and could be key to helping shut down the run game of this dual headed attack of the Sooners. If the Buckeyes are able to successfully limit the run game of the Sooners, the Sooners could very much be in a lot of trouble in Norman.

On the offensive side of things, losing a guy like Ezekiel Elliott is never a good thing, but Ohio State brings back veteran leadership in Redshirt Junior J.T. Barrett as the signal caller. J.T. will be surrounded by youth at almost every position, except center, where Senior Pat Elflein will look to lead the offensive line. Although you have some first time starters on the offensive line, there seems to be considerable confidence in the 1st string line. Now if a guy were to go down, well let’s just say that that confidence may start to wane. J.T. will get a few guys back at Wideout in guys like Noah Brown, Corey Smith, and Curtis Samuel, while also adding new game day faces in Torrance Gibson, Austin Mack, and Binjimen Victor. The keys will be how many crucial drops will the young guys have that can really impact the game and also if J.T. Barrett will be capable of hitting the deep ball. Barrett did a great job of hitting the deep ball to Devin Smith in 2014 when they faced Michigan State in East Lansing and this was a key to a buckeye victory. Much like that 2014 game, J.T.’s ability to hit guys like Noah Brown, Torrance Gibson, and Austin Mack deep will determine how much success Ohio State has on the offensive side of things.

Replacing Ezekiel Elliott in the backfield will be a dual headed tandem, much like the one the Sooners hold, in Senior Bri’Onte Dunn and Redshirt Freshman Mike Weber. Bri’Onte will provide some leadership and game day experience, but it is Mike Weber who provides the potential to be the next wave of successful Ohio State back. Weber will not have to face one of the more dominant Defensive lineman that the Sooners had last year in Defensive End Charles Tapper, who went to the NFL. Tapper was one of the more dominant guys on the Sooner’s defense, but just like Ohio State, you can expect Oklahoma to have guys on their roster to replace the production of a guy like Tapper. If Weber can realize that he does not have to be Ezekiel Elliott, but he just has to be Mike Weber and is able to produce, the running game will be enough the compliment the pass in Norman.

Before you place your bet on a veteran Oklahoma team, who appeared in the playoffs last season, to beat a young greatly inexperienced Ohio State squad in Norman, take into account all the details that are enclosed in this article. Sometimes football is just about match-ups, and from my view, Ohio State matches up very favorably with the Sooners. The games aren’t played on paper though, so we all will just have to wait till September 17th to find out.

Two against UAB Mid-Week Series

http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/050216aaa.html

Purdue Series

The Buckeyes swept Purdue over the weekend in West Lafayette to get right back in the B1G picture.

http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/042916aaa.html

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Ohio State baseball team claimed a doubleheader sweep at Purdue Friday in West Lafayette, Ind. Behind strong pitching and defense with some timely hitting, the Buckeyes won game one, 3-1, before holding on to a 3-2 victory in game two at Alexander Field. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 27-14-1 overall and 7-7 in conference play, while the Boilermakers drop to 7-33 overall and 2-15 in the Big Ten.

“Doubleheaders are normally split, especially on the road, so it was great for our ball club to get two wins,” head coach Greg Beals said. “We left some opportunities out there, but we pitched and played good defense. To me, the story of the second game was Ryan Feltner. He came in and finished it off with four scoreless innings for us. It was good to see Bosi [Bosiokovic] back. He was able to post up on the front side and just swing. He stayed behind the ball and hit a couple balls really hard tonight.”

We now know when Ohio State will play under the lights in 2016.

The Big Ten Conference Office and those in charge of scheduling for the ABC/ESPN networks announced the primetime schedule for it’s three major channels.

Ohio State will play in four of the conference’s seven primetime games throughout the 2016 season. The Buckeyes will be featured for four straight weeks.

Here are the following games that have been selected to broadcast.

Oct. 15 – Ohio State at Wisconsin, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2, 8 p.m. EDT

Oct. 22 – Ohio State at Penn State, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2, 8 p.m. EDT

Oct. 29 – Northwestern at Ohio State, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2, 5:30 p.m. EDT

Nov. 5 – Nebraska at Ohio State, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2, 8 p.m. EST

The top conference game featured in week one of the conference season will be Michigan traveling to Rutgers. Nebraska and Wisconsin will join the featured bill alongside Northwestern at Ohio State on Oct. 29. Featured games in the Big Ten Conference will wrap up on Nov. 12 with Michigan travelling to Iowa.

Depending on the record of both teams, It wouldn’t be surprising if the network picks up Ohio State at Michigan State on Nov. 19.

The primetime non-conference slate has yet to be announced. Ohio State’s week 3 trip to Memorial Stadium to take on Oklahoma, could very well be the featured game of the week.

Ohio State sends offer to 4-star Alabama commit

Recruiting never stops at Ohio State, as the staff is already building on the 2018 class.

Buckeyes offer 4-star Alabama commit

Urban Meyer has become notorious for being able to poach talented recruits from some of the best programs in the country. His most recent attempt however, may prove to be the most difficult.

Monday afternoon, 247Sports reported that Malcolm Epps (Houston, Texas / Dekaney) received a scholarship offer from Ohio State, despite being committed to Alabama. The four-star TE committed to the Crimson Tide a little more than two months ago, and up until this point his recruitment wasn't in question.

However, Epps told 247Sports that Ohio State was one of his "dream schools," while growing up, along with Oregon and UCLA. The No. 4 rated TE of the 2018 class still has two more years of high school before he has to make a decision, but expect both Ohio State and Alabama to continue to recruit him heavily.

Epps is seen as one of the best prospects of his class. The 6 foot 6 inch, 214-pounder has been able to show play-making abilities already, which has allowed him to stand out among his peers. He has shown the strength to get through linebackers but he also possesses enough speed and athleticism to run with safeties.

Ohio State currently has no commits at TE in the 2017 class. If this doesn't change by National Signing Day 2017, expect Meyer and the Buckeyes to go all in on Epps, as he excels as both a blocking and catching TE. In his interview with 247Sports, he mentioned that he was going to be scheduling a visit to Columbus, so look for the coaching staff to get him on campus sooner rather than later.

Buckeyes offer 4-star WR

Ohio State assistant coach, Kerry Coombs, tweeted out Monday morning that he was going to be in South Florida and made it known that he was looking towards the future for Ohio State.

Planting the flag all over South Florida today! #tonsoftalentpracticingdownheretoday #lookingforthe12membersofthedraftclassof2021! #GoBucks

— Kerry Coombs (@OsuCoachCoombs) May 2, 2016

While Coombs was in Florida, the Buckeyes sent out the second scholarship of the day to an elite 2018 prospect. Elijah Moore (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) is a four-star WR and plays football for a program associated with many current, former and future Buckeyes.

Moore is currently seen as the ninth best receiver in his class, according to 247Sports, and has seen an influx in schools interested in his talents. Along with the Buckeyes, Moore received an offer from Auburn yesterday. Ohio State and the Tigers join Alabama, Miami, Mississippi State and Tennessee as programs that have offered Moore in the last three months.

Miami, is currently seen as the favorite, as he took two visits to the school in April. Moore has yet to visit any other school at this point in his recruitment process and still has two years of high school left before he plays college football. Look for Moore's recruitment to gain much more momentum as he enters his senior year.

The move also caught the eye of one of Ohio State's most important targets for the 2017 class, in five-star WR Trevon Grimes (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas).

My young Bull !!!! Show him some love #BuckeyeNation ❕ https://t.co/vsibzGVP4D

Ohio State one of top 3 schools for a 4-star ATH

Class of 2018 ATH, Jermaine Eskridge (Tampa, Fla. / Jefferson), announced his list of top ten schools, in order, yesterday on Twitter. The four-star athlete already holds scholarship offers from 33 different schools, and he is only a sophomore in high school. Luckily for the Buckeyes, the team landed in the top three of his list of 10.

Top 10 schools pic.twitter.com/RpDJTEWFP0

— EJ2 (@Iam_Jermaine4) May 2, 2016

Early on in his recruitment, Eskridge was committed to Kentucky. However, after offers started pouring in, the 6 foot 3 inch, 180-pounder decided to decommit from the program late last year.

Ohio State follows North Carolina and Miami on the wide-receiver's list, and tops hometown schools Florida and Florida State, with Alabama closely behind. Eskridge's recruitment will be one to follow, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him gain a fifth star by multiple recruiting databases by the time everything is said and done.
