LGHL Ohio State linebacker Raekwon McMillan a potential future NFL star

The junior linebacker is ready to raise his game to another level this season and prepare himself for the NFL.

"2. Raekwon McMillan. The Buckeyes' middle linebacker was just another highly talented player among many in the OSU defense last year. This year, he'll be counted on for much more leadership."

- Chase Goodbread, NFL.com

NFL.com is doing a series called "16 for '16" which features several articles that break down college football's best. This time around, the list was 16 defenders that will be stars in the NFL. Making the list at the second overall spot was Ohio State linebacker Raekwon McMillan. The junior linebacker has been a rising star with the Buckeyes since his highly competitive recruitment ended with him choosing to head to Columbus for his college career. The 6'2 defensive star led the Buckeyes in tackling last season with 119 tackles and played a tremendous role in Ohio State's road to a Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame.

Returning for his third season, McMillan is 'the guy' this year, and will look to head a young but talented defensive unit. His leadership will be key early on in the season for the younger players, but his impact will surely be felt all season long. McMillan is a very solid tackler and is quick enough to be a threat in coverage as well. It makes sense that McMillan is gaining attention on a national level with his skill set, and certainly passes the eye test when determining who will be successful in the NFL.

Carrying on @N_Vannett81 legacy reppin the 81 next year

— Jake Hausmann (@Jake_Hausmann) May 31, 2016

Ohio State may have lost Nick Vannett to eligibility, but the Buckeyes have found another No. 81 to take his place. 2016 four-star tight end Jake Hausmann hasn't been on the team for very long, but will be looking to slip into the shoes (or in this case, jersey) of Vannett by taking over No. 81 with his new team. Hausmann along with Luke Farrell committed to Ohio State as a part of their 2016 recruiting class. Hausmann in particular committed to the Buckeyes over offers from Florida State, Michigan, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State, Tennessee, and Wisconsin, among others. He was rated as the fourth-best tight end in the country as well as the fifth-best prospect at any position from the state of Ohio.

Of course, whether Hausmann makes the same impact as Vannett did on the field remains to be seen. Though he may have a difficult time this season, with Marcus Baugh projected to be the starting tight end. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility to see some rotating, however, as the Ohio State coaching staff has been known to do that especially getting some work in for some younger players at key positions.

"But the Buckeyes had enough energy left to let out an extended roar upon finding out Monday afternoon that they are a second seed in the Louisville Regional and will be playing Horizon League champion Wright State (44-15) in a semifinal at 2 p.m. Friday."

- Mark Znidar, The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State baseball sealed a Big Ten tournament championship against Iowa and was slotted to head to the Louisville Regional for the NCAA tournament this past week. Now, the Buckeyes are preparing to play Wright State on Friday, with a chance to extend their excellent postseason run. This run marks the first time since 2009 that Ohio State has made the field for the NCAA tournament and you can bet head coach Greg Beals wants to keep the momentum going. The Buckeyes have won 15 of their last 18 games, an impressive stretch that has been accomplished at the perfect time. Now the team will look to continue that on Friday.

The two-seeded Buckeyes, should they get past Wright State, will have to face either Louisville or Western Michigan at the next stage. And though imagining trying to beat Louisville on their own field isn't fun to think about, Ohio State is focused on one step at a time.

The gift that keeps on giving yields once again.

Oh, Bret Bielema.

The Southeastern Conference's king of gab just doesn't know when to quit.

While previously he's shown inclinations that he couldn't stop thinking about Urban Meyer and Ohio State and then even when he's not trying to talk about them failed to do so, his latest talking point du jour casts a broader net over Ohio sports.

During a Tuesday press conference, Bielema tried (and failed) to land a metaphor about Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry and the Cleveland Cavailiers' LeBron James that'll make even the most die hard Steph Stans groan:

Bielema has told Arkansas players in past "we need to be a little more (Steph) Curry and a little less LeBron" in terms of team chemistry.

— Jon Solomon (@JonSolomonCBS) May 31, 2016

The same LeBron James who's been to six straight NBA Finals, winning two, and hoisting two NBA Finals MVP and four league MVP trophies for his troubles.

LeBron's noteworthiness for being one of the more selfless teammates in the NBA aside, if Arkansas was able to emulate what either player brought from a team chemistry stand point, they'd probably be pretty well off. The Razorbacks limped to an 8-5 season dropping games to Toledo and Texas Tech and finishing the season unranked after beginning in the Top 20.

Alas, at least Bielema realized when he was playing with fire, even if but a little too late:

Bielema also joked that he doesn’t watch basketball and he probably shouldn’t be using that analogy.

LGHL It's not you, Marcus Baugh, it's Urban Meyer

It's not you, Marcus Baugh, it's Urban Meyer

usa-today-9043236.0.jpg

The tight end position has routinely been neglected in Urban Meyer's offense, so why should this year be any different?

Marcus Baugh is by all accounts a pretty great football player and person. I mean, the guy may not be super active on Twitter, but when he is, we are treated to low-key hilarious Ricky Bobby quotes and timeless Boobie Miles words of advice.

Last season Baugh made a name for himself as the Buckeyes' number two tight end, consistently providing sound blocks in the Buckeyes' two tight end packages. #BaughMania reached its height during Ohio State's recent spring game, with seven catches for 64 yards, Baugh displayed surprising athleticism for his 6'5 255-pound frame, and production seldom seen from an Ohio State tight end.

In an offense that just lost its top five receiving threats, this could be the perfect opportunity for the returning Baugh to leverage his familiarity with J.T. Barrett into a big year, right?

Sadly, I disagree with the idea that this could finally be the year a talented Ohio State tight end breaks out in Urban Meyer's offense. This is in no way a slight on Baugh and his skillset, but expecting a breakout year from Baugh goes against everything we should expect from an Urban Meyer run offense.

Tight ends under Urban Meyer

The talent has always been there for Meyer's tight ends. First it was leading Fickell-era receiver Jake Stoneburner who was garnering high expectations from the media, as well as himself. However, even after moving from an offense that once threw the ball four times THE ENTIRE GAME against Illinois to the lethal Meyer spread attack, Stoneburner was regulated to an afterthought in Meyer's offense. Sure, Stoneburner managed to increase his yardage and reception totals with Meyer on board, but a receiver stat line of 16 receptions for 269 yards and four touchdowns is hardly anything to get excited over, and this is even after Meyer dubbed Stoneburner as a player who could seamlessly play both tight end and wide receiver.

But maybe Stoneburner wasn't the athlete we all thought he was. Maybe Jeff Heuerman, drafted in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos, would be the man to push the tight end to the forefront of Meyer's offense. The 2013 season saw success from Heuerman in the form of 26 receptions for 466 yards and four touchdowns, which was great, however a lot of that success came on plays like this:

In an offense that was essentially "find different ways for Carlos Hyde and Braxton Miller to run all over the defense", Heuerman's role was to make the defense pay when their eyes got caught too deep in the Buckeyes' backfield. This is the reason for Heuerman's very high yard per catch total, but the fact of the matter is that Heuerman was usually the lucky recipient of a blown coverage for a lot of his production.

While injuries played a role in Heuerman's senior year yards and touchdown totals being cut in half, the emergence of Nick Vannett as a receiving threat also made Heuerman's already scarce opportunities even more rare. Vannett managed to score five touchdowns in Ohio State's magical 2014 season, and while a different Buckeyes quarterback meant a more sophisticated passing game, both Vannett and Heuerman continued to mostly produce by virtue of their involvement in the running game. This is evidenced by Vannett's touchdown in the national championship against Oregon:

With a productive junior season, and a skill set that had scouts comparing Vannett to the great Rob Gronkowski, the sky seemed to be the limit for Vannett's senior season in Columbus. You know where this is going. For the first time in Meyer's tenure at Ohio State the top two tight ends on the roster failed to find the end zone even once, as the plays that used to leave tight ends streaking down the field seemed to be replaced with more wide receiver focused play calls.

Put simply, Urban Meyer has never utilized his obviously talented tight ends at Ohio State, so why should we expect a change now? There are two key reasons that potentially point toward a Baugh breakout.

Spring Game hero

While I'm not quite in the camp that says any spring game takeaways are completely useless, I do agree that there is a wild amount of speculation that comes from basically an open practice. We've seen the great Michael Thomas flourish in the spring game before later transitioning to a hero on Fall Saturdays, but there was still an entire season between these two feats.

It is true that Baugh's situation is notably different from a guy like Thomas, as Baugh, barring injury, projects to be Ohio State's starting tight end this season. The increased usage in the spring game that led to six receptions for Baugh could be a sign that Meyer is finally ready to more regularly incorporate the tight end into his offense, or it could be a case of Barrett finding more time than usual to check down to his tight end in a spring game that typically lacks quarterback pressure and big plays downfield. You can decide for yourself, but I'm taking the latter option.

Ohio State weapon selection

The other case for a Baugh breakout is in regards to Ohio State's weapon repertoire. Heuerman and Vannett undoubtedly saw their opportunities decrease at the hands of the numerous NFL wide receivers in the Ohio State offense, and Baugh just saw most of those playmakers depart for the NFL. Add in the stable quarterback situation and a new running back and it appears that all the stars are aligning for Baugh to get all the opportunities in the world.

Once again, you can take these above facts as a sign that Baugh is sure to breakout, but I wouldn't be too quick to sleep on the Buckeyes options at receiver. Noah Brown would have started last season if not for a broken leg. Corey Smith makes an impact in his own special way, and a barrage of skilled freshmen receivers is highlighted by the talented Austin Mack. This doesn't even mention the return of Curtis Samuel or the potential emergence of Mike Weber. All in all, where does Baugh get his touches from?

None of this is to say I'm predicting Baugh to have a terrible statistical season, however the past has shown us that Meyer seldom finds room in his offense to consistently feature the tight end, no matter how talented the tight end, and no matter how depleted the roster. With Baugh's athleticism and large frame there is no reason why he can't be a red zone monster if properly utilized. The question is, does Urban Meyer care?

The Buckeyes make the cut for five-star QB Tate Martell, while five-star RB Cam Akers reschedules his official visit to Ohio State.

Ohio State included in Tate Martell's list of top schools

Five-star QB Tate Martell (Las Vegas, Nev. / Bisop Gorman) has become a hot name in Ohio State recruiting circles in the last six months. Seen as the No.1 dual-threat QB of the 2017 class, the former Texas A&M commit has been in constant contact with Ohio State as he heads into his senior season of high school football.

Martell last visited the Ohio State campus back in March, when he was still committed to Texas A&M. Since then, he has decommitted from the university and the mutual interest between him and Urban Meyer's football program has increased significantly.

Last weekend, Martell released his list of top schools to Scout.com. Ohio State was included in this list along with California, Colorado, Miami, UCLA, USC and West Virginia. Martell doesn't seem to have any official visits set as of yet, but he did tell Scout.com that he plans on using all five.

It is crucial for Meyer and the Buckeyes to get Martell back to Columbus, and that will likely happen. The Buckeyes already have four-star QB Danny Clark (Massillon, Ohio / Archbishop Hoban) committed to the 2017 recruiting class. While space in that class is limited for the Buckeyes, Martell would be a huge get moving forward.

Cam Akers reschedules official visit to Columbus

Five-star RB Cam Akers (Clinton, Miss. / Clinton) was originally scheduled to visit the Ohio State campus this week. Akers, who took a two-day trip to Columbus with his father back in March, had been wanting to return with both parents in June, but unfortunately his visit this week has been postponed.

Akers' father confirmed the news with 247Sports over Memorial Day weekend. His father went on to mention the official visit has been rescheduled for the weekend of Ohio State's annual Friday Night Lights camp, which takes place July 22 this year.

The No. 2 RB in the country's father made sure to reassure that moving the date back had nothing to do with any change in Akers' already "strong interest" in the Ohio State football program.

Akers' interest with Ohio State has been rapidly growing recently, and the interest from coach Meyer has been just as apparent. The Buckeyes already have two RB commits in this class in Todd Sibley (Akron, Ohio / Archbishop Hoban) and JK Dobbins (La Grange, Texas / La Grange) but the coaching staff has asked Sibley to postpone his first year of eligibility by asking him to grey shirt, seemingly to make room for Akers if need be.

Sibley's commitment to the school is not now as strong as it once was, but it seems the Buckeyes have the momentum in Akers' recruitment. In the last week, Ohio State has had two of 247Sports' recruiting experts crystal ball Akers to Columbus.

LGHL Urban Meyer teaches his players the importance of freedom on Memorial Day

Memorial Day is more than a three-day weekend. And Urban Meyer is making sure that his players know why.

"But the No. 1 thing, write this down, is this is about honoring the men and women who serve this country. I should have done something like this long before today."

-Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer, via Austin Ward, ESPN

With Memorial Day upon us, we want to take a moment to thank our veterans for their service, and remember our fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Urban Meyer has taken this lesson very seriously this year, and has expanded his off-field "Real Life Wednesday" project to include a week-long series of lessons dubbed "Patriot Week," to teach his players about the importance of their freedom and those fighting for it.

The four-day event includes lectures on different topics, including the differences between political parties, the importance of voting and first-hand accounts of Navy SEAL training. While many of these lessons are taught in American History classes, many of the players acknowledged a benefit to being able to reflect on the lessons leading up to Memorial Day. For example, there was also a thorough discussion of the election process in preparation for November’s presidential election, and a hearty debate about past elections among current players. Speakers included Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted and U.S. District Judge Algenon Marbley, along with professors from Ohio State and former servicemembers. The week concluded with a special Memorial Day workout, where players wore red, white and--yes--even blue.

Perhaps the most powerful moment of the week, however, was hearing from a Navy SEAL about training, serving and, ultimately, losing a friend in combat. The players then wrote letters to the families of fallen soldiers. In the words of offensive lineman Pat Elflein, "that puts into perspective what Memorial Day is all about."

"If you take a look at it, the best athletes we had in ‘65 were the football players. "(Arnie) Chonko, (Don) Harkins and Bo Rein. The rest of us, largely sophomores, learned from those guys, how to win, what kind of attitude to get."

-Steve Arlin, Ohio State baseball national champion, via Bob Hunter, the Columbus Dispatch

With a win yesterday over the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Ohio State Buckeyes baseball team earned a Big Ten title--it’s first since 2007--and an automatic berth into the NCAA College World Series. But as the team prepares to head to their regional, they will be massive underdogs in a sport which has been largely dominated by teams from the south and the west. In fact, no Big Ten team has even made the finals of the NCAA tournament since the Buckeyes won it all back in 1966.

It had been a different story before that. Ohio State had finished as runners-up to Arizona State in 1965. The Big ten had also been champs in 1960 (Minnesota), 1962 (Michigan) and 1964 (Minnesota).

Steve Arlin was an integral part of both the 1965 and 1966 teams for the Buckeyes, earning MVP honors in the College World Series and ultimately being selected 13th overall by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1966 MLB Draft. Arlin’s teammate, Chuck Brinkman, said that Arlin was the best pitcher in the NCAA at the time. Arlin was one of five players who went on to play professional baseball. Some of the best players on the 1965 team were also on the football team playing for Woody Hayes, including shortstop Bo Rein, who also played halfback; Arnie Chanko, who was an all-American in both sports; and defensive back Don Harkins.

Now, 50 years later, the Buckeyes will look to redeem not only Ohio State baseball with a second national title, but also the Big Ten conference as a whole.

It's a THREE-PEAT for the First Varsity Eight! #Buckeyes win it with a time of 6:19.04.

— OSU Women's Rowing (@OhioState_WROW) May 29, 2016

The No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes women’s rowing team continued to make history Sunday at the NCAA Division I Rowing Championships in Golden River, California. The First Varsity Eight, coming off a win in the Big Ten Championships, won its third-consecutive NCAA title--the first team in NCAA history to do so. The third-seeded crew had earned a runner-up finish in its semifinal heat Saturday on its way to the Grand Finals, but edged out California by more than two seconds to win the finals crown.

The Buckeyes finished second overall as a team with 126 points, falling just three points short of California’s total, with 66 points coming from the First Varsity Eight win. The title is California’s third overall, and first since 2006. Ohio State had made history last year by becoming the first school in NCAA history to win three-straight team rowing championships, having defeated top-ranked California in the finals.

Ohio State was one of just three schools to advance all three of its crews, including the First and Second Varsity Eights and the First Varsity Four, to the NCAA Grand Finals Sunday. The Second Varsity Eight earned a second-place finish behind California, earning 42 team points, and the First Varsity Four placed fifth, garnering 18 team points.

Overall, the Buckeyes have earned 10 top-five finishes as a team at the NCAA Championships, including seven national event championships in the last five years. Behind Ohio State, Virginia, Stanford and Washington rounded out the top five. Wisconsin and Michigan finished ninth and tenth respectively

The Buckeyes represented well in their championship run in Omaha.

The real season has just begun for the Ohio State baseball team. After running the gauntlet to win the Big Ten tournament championship, the Buckeyes are now headed to the Louisville regional as a 2-seed for NCAA tourney play.

Ohio State, which won two games against both Michigan and Michigan State in Omaha before outlasting Iowa in the title game, put five players on the Big Ten's All-Tournament team.

Junior left fielder Ronnie Dawson took home Most Outstanding Player honors after hitting .578 and breaking tournament records with 15 hits and six doubles. Dawson was a first-team All-Big Ten performer during the regular season as well, and will likely be the first position player from the conference chosen in June's Major League Baseball Draft.

Joining Dawson on the All-Tournament team were catcher Jalen Washington, second baseman Troy Kuhn, shortstop Craig Nennig, and center fielder Troy Montgomery. Nennig ran wild, tying the tournament record with six stolen bases, and Washington set a record with 55 innings behind the plate while also driving in four runs. Kuhn drove in a tourney-high 10 runs and Montgomery had nine hits, four RBIs, and four runs scored.

In addition to the Cardinals, the Buckeyes will be joined in the foursome by 3-seed Wright State and 4-seed Western Michigan. The Buckeyes will be taking on the in-state Raiders in their first game Friday, June 3rd at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN3.

Minnesota and Nebraska will also be representing the Big Ten in the tournament, going to the Fort Worth and Clemson regionals, respectively.

The winners of each of the tournament's 16 regionals move on to super regional play, which determines the final eight teams that participate in the College World Series in Omaha.

See who's going where in the chase for the 2016 College World Series title.

Ohio State's five wins in five days this past week is culminating in a reward many OSU baseball fans have been clamoring for.

After going 5-1 and capping their weekend with four wins in 48 hours -- largely due to weather related unfairness -- and a Big Ten title, the Ohio State Buckeyes are heading to their first NCAA Tournament regional since 2009.

A source told Land-Grant Holy Land before OSU's championship game against Iowa was complete that the Buckeyes had bid for a regional, but that was seen as a long shot at best with OSU on the proverbial bubble until their tournament winning run.

Greg Beals and the Big Ten champs will enter a Louisville regional field as the two seed with a chance to move on to a Super Regional with a shot to return to Omaha and for the first time since 1967, the College World Series. The Buckeyes will open Friday, June 3 at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN3 against three-seeded Wright State (44-15). The Cardinals are the No. 2 overall seed in the field. Western Michigan is the other team in the regional.

Here's how Ohio State reacted to finding out their seed:
