MSU defensive tackle Damon Knox won’t return for 6th year

Defensive tackle Damon Knox will not return to Michigan State for a sixth year, the school released Friday afternoon.

MSU coach Mark Dantonio said in a release that Knox, who graduated in December, will instead be pursuing a career in law enforcement. An athletic department spokesman said MSU never officially submitted paperwork to the NCAA to apply for a sixth year.

“Damon has been a major contributor to our success the past five years,” Dantonio said. “We appreciate his time and commitment to the Michigan State football program and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

For college football fans, this time of the year can be rough to get through. Teams don’t start fall came for another three plus months. The continuous story line topics continue to repeat themselves from the spring as content creators run out of ideas to cover the team you’re rooting for.

Coaches and players though continue to stay busy through the recruiting cycle, talking to future players, as the roster starts to solidify itself when decisions from months prior become official. Right now, the recruiting cycle will be the top news to follow as we inch closer to June.

With the weekend coming to a close and before we say goodbye to free time, relaxation, and finishing up the honey-do list — here are some of the top Ohio State football headlines across the web from the weekend.

Schmidt to Transfer; Felder will not Enroll — Cleveland.com

Urban Meyer has two more spots opening up on the roster before the start of the season and it looks like with the recent transfer news of offensive lineman Grant Schmidt and corner Kareem Felder not enrolling for the upcoming semester.

There still hasn’t been word on Felder’s future but Schmidt — who is believe to be the first Ohio State commit from the state of South Dakota — might be looking to return closer to home to finish up his college career.

According to Ari Wasserman above, the situation for Felder is academic related.

Todd Sibley Enjoys Visit to Pitt — 24/7 Sports

Ever since Hoban went gangbusters in the Div. III playoffs and made their run to Ohio Stadium to secure a state championship, Ohio State fans have been excited about the prospect of Todd Sibley playing for the Buckeyes as a future star running back.

Now, after being asked to grayshirt, those dreams are becoming more and more separated from reality.

Sibley, who ran for over 2,000 yards as a senior, recently visited the University of Pittsburgh and said everything about the experience was outstanding.

Mike Vokovcan at Pittsburgh Sports Now spoke to Sibley about his interest in Pitt before he visited on Friday.

“I think the one thing interest me most about Pitt is the history of great running backs that have come through Pitt. So many great names, and I feel like if I ever had the opportunity to be apart of the team then I could to be one of the great running backs to play at Pitt and make a name for myself.”

The Ohio State commit has expressed interest in several other schools. Michigan, Missouri, Penn State, Michigan State, Virginia, and Wisconsin are all considered to be in the mix if Sibley decides to move on from Ohio State.

Haskell Garrett still has a solid commitment to Ohio State — Scout.com

The no. 2 rated defensive tackle in the class of 2017 talked to Scout.com about his current recruiting process and where he stands with his current commitment to Ohio State. Despite making the pledge to Urban Meyer and defensive line coach Larry Johnson in early February — teams like Oklahoma, UCLA and USC continue to show interest in him. They also believe they have a chance at landing the Bishop-Gorman product.

In the video, Garrett confirms his solid commitment to Ohio State, not having plans to make any other official visits, and the recruiting process for teammates Tate Martell and Palaie Gaoteote. The quarterback and linebacker are also targets for the Ohio State coaching staff.

High Street is the Key to linking Ohio State and Columbus — Columbus Dispatch

While Donald Trump sits in his campaign bus, figuring out ways to build a wall across our country, the idea of tearing a figurative one down on the Ohio State campus is being talked about.

Jim Weiker touched on High Street as the separator of the Ohio State campus and the neighborhoods surrounding.

Wyatt contrasted OSU’s layout with that of other campuses such as MIT’s in the Boston suburb of Cambridge and Drexel University’s in Philadelphia, which have stretched their tentacles into surrounding neighborhoods.

Architect Graham Wyatt talked about potential ideas to fix the issue at the OSU Center for Real Estate’s annual conference.

The book “On Campus,” written by Robert A.M. Stern’s staff, cites several other examples of “embedded” campuses, including the University of Michigan’s and Miami University’s in Ohio.

In those university towns and others — Iowa City also comes to mind — it’s possible to walk from the campus to the town without noticing you’ve crossed a border.

That can’t be said about Ohio State, where High Street serves as a firm line of demarcation between campus and civilian life.

The intersection of 15th Avenue and High Street in particular remains a “diamond in the rough,” Wyatt said.

“There’s huge potential at that intersection,” Wyatt said. “It’s primed for new commercial development.”

Reeves tackles new hockey chance at Ohio State — LaCrosse Tribune

Joe Mellenbruch has a great feature on Jacyn Reeves, who will be transferring from Union College to play at Ohio State. Reeves scored 5 goals as a freshman and ranked second in points for the Dutchwomen.

“I’m really excited,” Reeves said. “I totally believe in their program, and Jenny Potter definitely knows what she’s talking about. I’m really excited to work with them, and if I give it my all, which I’m going to do, I’m really excited to see where it takes me. I think I can accomplish a lot.”

The young squad managed to improve throughout the season, and should be better next year.

As the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Tournament begins today with round one matchups, notably absent from the lineup is the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team.

It was all that could be expected of a rebuilding year for Ohio State. Having graduated two of its top scorers and its faceoff specialist, it was no surprise that the midfield would be down from last year and that the attack would struggle to find a rhythm. Predictably, with a formidable schedule in a formidable conference, 2016 was going to be a rough season for the young squad, but the team was better than the record might indicate.

The Buckeyes finished the season with a 7-8 overall record, going 2-3 in conference. Ohio State had one of the toughest schedules in college lacrosse, playing all of 2015’s final four tournament teams, including top-rated Denver on the road and at one point losing six-straight games, all of them against ranked opponents. Of these losses, four were by just one goal.

In conference, while the team finished second from the bottom of the Big Ten, the squad still came out ahead of Michigan, who did not win a single conference game. The Buckeyes hung with Maryland, the top team in the conference, losing by only two goals. Ohio State also ended the season on a high note, beating Rutgers in Columbus on senior night. The Scarlet Knights would go on to lose to Maryland in the finals of the Big Ten Tournament, and both Maryland and Johns Hopkins would make the field of 16 in the NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament, with Maryland earning the No. 1-overall seed.

Perhaps the highlight of the Buckeyes’ team was strong play by the defense and goalie, Tom Carey, who recorded 141 saves on the season, including a 16-save performance against Marquette. Robby Haus, who was selected in the fourth round of January’s Major League Lacrosse Draft, played alongside fellow senior Chris Mahoney on an experienced squad that allowed just 9.04 goals per game, which placed the team in the top-20 nationally in scoring defense. Carey also had a strong contribution from the goal, leading the Buckeyes to a 0.917 clear percentage, placing them No. 2 nationally in the category.

The Buckeyes also ranked in the top 10 nationally for faceoff wins, led by faceoff specialist Jake Withers, who also led the team in ground balls with 110 on the year--more than three times that of Robby Haus, who was second on the list. Withers was an anchor in the young midfield, winning 60.7 percent of faceoffs played.

While the Buckeyes had a strong overall defense, allowing just over nine goals per game, the offense was relatively stagnant, especially at the start of the season, coming in at No. 39 of 68 Division I men’s lacrosse teams in goals per game, scoring an average of just 9.4 goals per game. Ohio State also had issues maintaining possession, and came in at No. 5 nationally in turnovers per game.

Still, there were highlights on the offensive side of the ball. Attackman Carter Brown and midfielder Johnny Pearson led the Buckeyes in scoring on the season with 20 goals apiece on the season. With Brown graduating, and being selected in the seventh round of the Major League Lacrosse Draft, Pearson will need to continue his late season surge into next year. Attackmen J.T. Blubaugh, Austin Shanks and Eric Fannell each had 15 goals on the season, and will anchor the attack next season. Blubaugh recorded a season-high six points (goals and assists) against Detroit in February, but it was Pearson who proved to be the team’s consistent high-scorer, recording four goals in three separate games.

With an experienced midfield and attack, expectations are certainly higher for the Buckeyes come next season. And with excellent young players on both sides of the ball, there is hope for a strong, all-around squad across the field. Freshman defenseman Matt Borges, for instance, who saw action in all 15 games this season, came into the season as one of the top defensive recruits nationally, and now has a season’s worth of experience on the field and sideline to add to his repertoire.

While this season may have been a disappointment on its own, the team managed to overcome significant losses and a tough schedule to barely miss out on a 0.500 season. The outlook for the now-experienced team should be much brighter.

Under the watchful leadership of Head Coach Melissa Schaub the Buckeyes have increasingly gotten better. In the 2012-13 season as Interim Head Coach the path became clear rather fast. With back-to-back appearances to the NCAA Tournament in 2014 & 2015 – it only gets better for 2016.

UCLA earned the right to advance into the second Round by defeating Notre Dame on Friday the 13th, 4-1. Their season is now over with a 15-6 record and a National Ranking of # 27.

Today’s victory extends the Buckeyes winning streak to 15 – a Program record. The Ohio State University has dropped just 4 team points during this 15-game winning streak. They are currently 30-2 and are Nationally Ranked at #4.

Next will be Georgia Tech who earned the right to move on with a sweep against #13 South Carolina, 4-0. The Yellow Jackets #17 improved to 19-8 for the season. The stars for the Yellow Jackets that the Buckeyes will face are: Kendal Woodard, Paige Hourigan, and Rasheeda McAdoo.
The Buckeyes are strong, though. A determination is flowing evenly through their matches that indicate prosperous results for them.

Today’s win breaks down like this:

As I mentioned, next up is Georgia Tech. They will confront the Yellow Jackets @ 8:00 p.m. on Thursday May 19th. I will be back with a preview and the location of play – as well as where to find it on the radio or television … let’s support our Buckeyes. They are looking mighty good.

Until then…

GO Buckeyes!

The Buckeyes will be looking for a sweep of the Wolverines on Senior Day on Sunday in Columbus.

The Ohio State baseball team seems to be peaking at just the right time. The Buckeyes clinched a series win over Michigan on Saturday with a 7-3 victory in Columbus, improving to 12-8 in Big Ten play.

Ohio State's John Havird took the ball and struck out a career-high nine batters en route to his sixth win of the season. After a rough first inning, the lefty settled in and allowed two runs on eight hits over seven innings without issuing a walk.

Ronnie Dawson, Troy Kuhn, and Tre Gantt each had two hits apiece to pace the offense. Dawson hit his 10th home run of the season, a mammoth shot, and drove in two runs and scored three.

Wolverine starter Oliver Jaskie wasn't terribly sharp, but also didn't get a lot of help from his defense in this one. The lefty allowed seven runs in his 3.2 innings, but only three were earned. Jaskie gave up seven hits and five walks while striking out seven.

Michigan wasted no time in touching up Havird, scoring twice in the top of the first courtesy of a two-run homer to right-center by Carmen Benedetti.

In the bottom of the second, Ohio State trimmed the lead in half thanks to some two-out hitting. Gantt doubled into the right-center gap and came around to score on a looping single to center by Nick Sergakis.

The Buckeyes claimed their first lead of the day in the third due in large part to two errors by Michigan second baseman Ako Thomas. Dawson reached base to lead things off on the first of those miscues and moved to third on a double down the left field line by Kuhn. A sharp grounder off the bat of Troy Montgomery then ate up Thomas and allowed both runners to come around for a 3-2 advantage.

More two-out hitting extended the Ohio State lead in the bottom of the fourth. Craig Nennig picked up an infield single and scored when Dawson tripled into right-center. Dawson came plateward on the play as well thanks to the third error of the day on Thomas, making it a 5-2 ballgame.

Jaskie couldn't recover after that, yielding a bunt single to Kuhn and then walking Montgomery, Jacob Bosiokovic, and Jalen Washington in quick succession to force home the Buckeyes' sixth run of the day. Keith Lehmann relieved and was able to strike out Brady Cherry to leave the bases loaded, but the damage had been done.

In the top of the eighth, the Wolverines cut the lead to 6-3 when Cody Lugbauer absolutely crushed a hanging breaking ball from reliever Michael Horejsei over the wall in right field. Seth Kinker came on for Ohio State and struck out Dominic Jamett to finish the frame.

Dawson got that run right back in the bottom of the frame with his no-doubt moonshot to right on a similar hanging breaking ball, giving the Buckeyes a 7-3 lead heading into the ninth.

Kinker worked the ninth to close things out and give Ohio State the series-clinching win.

The chance for a sweep will come on Senior Day at Bill Davis Stadium for the Buckeyes on Sunday. The game will air live on Big Ten Network and is scheduled to get underway at 3:00 p.m. ET.

One Buckeye leaves the program while another won't enroll.

Saturday morning marked a big transaction day for Ohio State football.

According to an Ohio State spokesperson, one current Buckeye and one future one won't be with the Buckeyes when they break camp this fall.

Grant Schmidt, a South Dakota product who'd been evaluated as a sizable project type, is leaving the OSU football team. The specific circumstances surrounding his departure aren't immediately known. Schmidt was redshirted last season and wasn't expected to be a prominent member of the depth chart this fall.

Three-star Baltimore, MD defensive back prospect Kareem Felder, expected to join the Ohio State football program this summer, will not be joining the team as planned. His reasons for not enrolling, be it qualifying, medical, or otherwise, were also not immediately made available.

The moves should solidify Ohio State's standing at the NCAA mandated cap of 85 scholarships heading into the 2016 football season.

Best of luck to both in their football playing and beyond futures alike.

Mike Conley, Kosta Koufos, D'Angelo Russell, Jared Sullinger, and Evan Turner will find their way into the news this summer.

Unfortunately, not one of the five former Buckeyes suiting up in the NBA is still playing. Jared Sullinger and Evan Turner's injury-depleted Boston Celtics were bounced in the first round. Mike Conley (Achilles) wasn't able to suit up as his Memphis Grizzlies were swept by the San Antonio Spurs in the first round. And Kosta Koufos' Sacramento Kings and D'Angelo Russell's Los Angeles Lakers were nowhere close to playoff basketball.

But all five potentially face critical pivot points in their careers this summer, whether it be through free agency or personnel moves that are out of their control. In alphabetical order, here's the lowdown on what's going on with each former Buckeye this summer:

Mike Conley

Conley, 28, is entering free agency for the first time, as the four-year, $45 million extension the former Ohio State point guard inked with the Grizzlies in November 2010 will expire on July 1. Conley will be an unrestricted free agent, meaning the Grizzlies, the team that selected Conley with the fourth overall pick in the 2007 draft, will not get a shot at matching any contract offer(s) that come Conley's way.

The odds appear to be against Conley re-upping with the Grizzlies. Star center Marc Gasol will be 32 next season and is coming off foot surgery. Zach Randolph and Tony Allen, the other two members of Memphis' 'Grit-and-Grind' core, will be entering their age-35 seasons in 2016-17 and are clearly in decline. Jeff Green and Courtney Lee were traded away during the season. In the short-term, Memphis -- currently sans a coach -- will be worse than it has been in previous years.

Conley will be one of the NBA's top free agents. Not only is Conley the consummate point guard who involves his teammates, he is a capable 3-point shooter, a strong defender, and one tough mother who plays through pain. The Spurs will reportedly pursue Conley, as will any other NBA team in need of a point guard.

Kosta Koufos

After signing a four-year, $33 million contract with the Kings last summer, Koufos appeared in 78 games with his new team in 2015-16, averaging 6.8 points and 5.4 rebounds in 19 minutes per game. In 14 starts, Koufos racked up 11 points and 9.1 boards a game.

One of the most interesting storylines over the NBA's offseason will be the fate of DeMarcus Cousins, the Kings' productive-but-mercurial franchise center. Cousins' production has never been in question, as the 6-foot-11, 270-pound behemoth has been named an All-Star in the past two seasons. But Cousins has seemingly clashed with anyone and everyone associated with the Kings over his first six campaigns in the NBA, and it remains to be seen how his relationship will develop with new coach Dave Joerger.

Should Cousins be dealt in a blockbuster trade, Koufous could become the Kings' starter at center or at least take part in a timeshare with Willie Cauley-Stein.

D'Angelo Russell

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 draft flashed brilliance in his rookie season, including a 39-point, ice-in-his-veins outburst on March 1. There were also low points, notably his season-long dissent with former Lakers coach Byron Scott and Russell recording teammate Nick Young admitting that he cheated on Iggy Azalea.

Things are looking up for Russell, though. Los Angeles hired Luke Walton as its new coach, and the ex-Laker has already expressed his admiration for Russell's game. Kobe Bryant cumbersome salary and retirement tour mercifully at an end. And L.A. also has only just over $26.1 million in salary committed for next season. How the Lakers dole out that freed-up cash will go a long way in dictating the trajectory of Russell's career.

Jared Sullinger

Sullinger is set to net his first taste of free agency after completing his fourth season with the Celtics. Sullinger, 24, is a restricted free agent, though -- meaning the Celtics, if they so chose, can match the terms of an offer sheet the 6-foot-9, 260-pound forward inks with another squad.

How the market develops will be an interesting study for Sullinger. The former Ohio State star missed most of the second half of the 2014-15 season, but rebounded to start 73 games this year, averaging a tad over 10 points and eight rebounds per game. It's well-known that the Celtics, a team comprised mostly of role players, are in search of a true star player, and that strategy could affect how Boston approaches Sullinger's free agency.

Evan Turner

Turner flourished in his second season under Celtics' coach Brad Stevens, notching 10.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists while shooting a career-best 46 percent from the field. After making 57 starts for Boston in 2014-15, the 27-year-old Turner thrived coming off the bench in 2015-16, leading one of the NBA's most efficient bench units.

As an upcoming unrestricted free agent, how Turner decides his fate will be compelling case. The former No. 2 overall pick looks to have found a niche in Boston under a coach who has figured out how to utilize his strengths, but it's likely Turner could find a larger payday elsewhere.

The Tournament’s # 4 seed – The Ohio State University Women’s Tennis team shut down the Youngstown State Penguins, 4-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Championship Friday on the Varsity Tennis Courts.

The Buckeyes, hosting NCAA first and second round matches for the first time, will take on the 27th ranked Bruins of UCLA at 4 p.m. Saturday in the second round. The Buckeyes have bolstered their record to 29-2 on the year, and are seeking to move on to the Round of 16 for the first time in program history.

The Bruins, in their earlier match against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame won, 4-1.

The Buckeyes are on an impressive roll – winning their last 14 matches. They picked up wins on courts one and two in doubles to take a 1-0 lead vs. the Penguins. The squad then won in straight sets on courts two, four and six for the team victory. The win extended the Buckeyes’ home winning streak to a program record 14 and was the program record extending 18th shutout of the year. Ohio State has dropped just three team points during its 14 match winning streak.

Ohio State claimed the doubles point for the 27th time this season. Ohio State dropped just three games in the first three matches off the court to complete the sweep. Sneed, ranked No. 113, posted a shutout of her own on court six, downing Ana Stroe 6-0, 6-0, for her eighth straight win. On court two, No. 96-ranked De Santis defeated Brendel, 6-0, 6-1 to put the Buckeyes up 3-0 as she mastered her seventh win in a row. Starting pitcher Tanner Tully was lights-out for the Buckeyes, who got a much-needed win against the Wolverines.

In a huge spot, Ohio State got exactly what it needed on Friday night, holding on to beat Michigan 3-2 to start off the final weekend home series of the season. With the victory, the Buckeyes improved to 11-8 in Big Ten play and inched closer to securing a berth in the conference tournament.

This game belonged to Ohio State starter Tanner Tully, who looked every bit the ace of the staff that he's grown into as he picked up his fourth consecutive quality start. Tully tossed eight innings of one run ball, scattering five hits and striking out eight in improving to 7-3 on the season.

Wolverines' starter Brett Adcock had one rough inning, giving up all three of his earned runs in the fifth, and took the loss. For the game, the lefty went 6.2 innings, allowing six hits and walking four while striking out nine.

The offense for the Buckeyes was delivered by their two co-captains. Jalen Washington homered and Nick Sergakis drove in a pair with a single, which was all Tully needed.

Michigan took the early 1-0 lead thanks to a Tully wild pitch. Jonathan Englemann doubled with one out in the top of the second, advanced to third on a sacrifice fly, and came plateward when a breaking ball in the dirt got away from Buckeye catcher Jalen Washington.

Adcock worked out of trouble in the second and remained in control into the fifth. That's when Washington belted his second homer of the season, a solo shot over the left field wall to tie the game at one.

Ohio State wasn't done in the inning, tacking on two more to take a 3-1 lead. After the Washington homer, Brady Cherry doubled into the left field corner and Tre Gantt walked. Both runners advanced a base on an Adcock balk, setting up Sergakis to deliver a two-run single to center.

From there, Tully was lights out. At one point, the lefty set down 16 Wolverines in a row, commanding the strike zone and never allowing the maize and blue to get anything going.

Michael Horejsei struck out the first batter of the ninth inning, and Yianni Pavlopoulos relieved him to close things out, but things got interesting.

Pavlopoulos allowed a run and put both the tying and winning runs on base with two outs, but a highlight reel diving catch by Troy Montgomery in center field ended the game and preserved the win. It was the 11th save of the season for Pavlopoulos.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. ET on Saturday, and will stream live on BTN Plus. John Havird will be on the bump for the Buckeyes against Michigan's Oliver Jaskie.

As the losers of the spring game back in April, the Scarlet team had to lay down some mulch in a prominent part of campus

"The Buckeyes' football team – at least half of them – are back to work in Columbus...doing yard work."

Eric Sager, Eleven Warriors

As a recent tradition, the losing side of the spring game has to put down fresh mulch on Buckeye Grove – the well known spot next to the Shoe that houses buckeye trees for all the All-American selections.

With the Scarlet team losing to the Gray team back on April 16, 28-17, it was time for them to get to work (or lack thereof).

Last week, Pat Elflein was inside the Shoe collecting his degree from Ohio State. Today, he was out movin' mulch.

Will Smith's Buckeye tree got some decorations. Smith was recently shot and killed in New Orleans in early April.

""You won’t play forever," they said. "Start making plans for the future now instead of later," they warned us."

Na'il Diggs, The Cauldron

You here the story time and time again: Professional athletes squandering their money from their pro days. But what happens when the athlete isn't the solely responsible for the financial demise?

In a piece written by former NFLer Na'il Diggs, he talked about how the financial institutions that were supposed to guide him, instead took advantage of him.

From buying a house when the housing market was about to pop, to the impending high mortgage rates, Diggs talks about the headache of dealing with the financial side of being an athlete – while at the same time, worrying about a) how many more playing days one has left and b) saving money for the future.

It's a riveting read, and opens your eyes to the fact that athletes are taken advantage of.

Look at the case of Columbus Blue Jacket Jack Johnson. It wasn't a bank that took advantage of him; it was his own parents.

Tournament Play Begins

For Buckeyes women's tennis, it's time for the NCAA Tournament. On Friday, the No.4 seeded Buckeyes hosted the opening round of the tournament. While UCLA and Notre Dame duked it out earlier in the morning, the Buckeyes had the task of taking on Youngstown State.

The Buckeyes jumped out to a 1-0 lead, and continued to not look back.

With the 4-0 win, Ohio State will play back at home on Saturday against UCLA at 4 p.m. The winner of that contest will move onto the Round of 16.

Ohio State is all over the place in post-spring Top 25s. With all of their roster losses, should we consider Ohio State a top ten team? The Big Ten favorite? Something else? Our Luke Zimermann broke it down on the LGHL Facebook page earlier today. You can watch the full video above.

The Buckeyes are in need of a series win against their biggest rival to solidify their Big Ten tournament chances.

There are just six games remaining on the Big Ten schedule for Ohio State. Two weekend series that will determine if the Buckeyes make the trip to Omaha for the conference tournament. Currently in a tie for sixth place in the standings, head coach Greg Beals and his squad can ill afford to turn in any poor performances the rest of the way.

At 10-8, Ohio State is even with both Maryland and Penn State. The Terrapins swept the Buckeyes in College Park in early April, and so hold the tiebreaker. Penn State was not on this year's schedule.

Just a game behind, and one spot out of the Big Ten tourney, is a 9-9 Illinois team who own a series win over Ohio State. A game behind them is Iowa, the team the Buckeyes took two of three from last weekend. To say things are tight heading into the penultimate series of the regular season wouldn't do the situation justice.

Ohio State must win. It's that simple. If the scarlet and gray wants to make a trip to the postseason, a series win this weekend is imperative. And what would a must-win scenario be without the Buckeyes' archrival Michigan being in the opposing dugout?

A 10-2 win over nationally-ranked Florida Atlantic on Wednesday was a template for how Ohio State needs to finish out. There were three home runs, savvy at-bats and baserunning, and solid pitching and defense. Every starter reached base at least once, and all but one scored a run. Five pitchers combined to yield just six hits.

It was the kind of complete all-around performance it will take to beat a Wolverines' squad that has spent the majority of the season in the national polls.

Michigan Wolverines (34-13, 12-5 in Big Ten play)

Michigan began the season in the top 25, and head coach Erik Bakich's team has played like a top-caliber team for most of the season. The Wolverines pound the baseball at the plate and the strike zone on the mound among the best the Big Ten has to offer. Currently sitting in a tie for second in the conference, a series win for Ohio State will be no small task.

The maize and blue are second in the conference in hitting with a team batting average of .316, and take the top spot in on-base percentage and runs scored. Michigan scores nearly seven runs per game, a full run better than the Buckeyes, and boasts six regulars with an average above .300.

Sophomore shortstop Jake Bivens has been tearing up opposing pitchers all season, raking at a .387 clip, leading the Big Ten with 75 hits, and placing second with 49 runs scored from the leadoff spot.

The 3-4-5-6 spots in the lineup for the Wolverines are really going to present a challenge for Ohio State's pitching staff, as there aren't any glaring holes. Junior right fielder Carmen Benedetti, one of the top draft prospects in the conference, hits at a .343 clip, leads the team with 18 doubles, and sports a .995 OPS.

Behind Benedetti, junior catcher Harrison Wenson leads the Big Ten with 53 RBIs and paces his team with six home runs, senior center fielder Cody Bruder hits .374 and is second in the conference with 44 RBIs, and sophomore first baseman Drew Lugbauer has five homers and 40 driven in. All three own an OPS north of .900.

So keeping Michigan off the board will not be easy. But neither will scoring against them. The Wolverines' hurlers limit the opposition to a Big Ten-best .229 batting average and have struck out a conference-high 395 while yielding under four runs per game.

The weekend rotation is experienced, and starts with junior Brett Adcock, who is 6-3 with a 2.88 earned run average in 59.1 innings of work. The lefty has held opponents to a .170 batting average and sports a menacing 11.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

Joining Adcock are fellow southpaws Oliver Jaskie and Evan Hill. Jaskie, a sophomore, leads the team with seven wins and 63.1 innings pitched. He allows just a .213 batting average against and has a WHIP of 1.20.

Hill, the only senior among the group, is 5-3 with a 3.52 ERA, and averages just under one strikeout per inning. His .279 opponents' batting average is the only seeming weak spot in a starting rotation that has been lights out since February.

As if the starters weren't daunting enough, the bullpen may be even better. Among the top four relievers in appearances for Bakich, none yields a batting average over .254 to opponents, and collectively they average better than a strikeout per inning. Late leads do not often disappear against this group.

The pressure will be on Ohio State this weekend in Columbus. Michigan is a virtual lock for the Big Ten tournament, and is very likely headed to the NCAA tourney as well. Given the balance of the Wolverines' team, pulling out a series win would rank among the finest achievements for the Buckeyes all season. It would also help them solidify their own spot in the postseason.
