Let's talk Big 12, TV deals, basketball attendance, and Tulane's dope new helmets.

It's been a hot second since we've had a Hangout in the Holy Land, thanks to my travel schedule and all, but that doesn't mean we don't have things to talk about. Matt and Colton fire up the ol' podcasting machine and hit the biggest stories.

On this podcast, Ohio State basketball's attendance woes are discussed, along with The Schott as a quality college basketball venue. Can the Buckeyes regain some home court muscle this season?

Dennis Dodd's recent article on how Big 12 expansion could impact the Big Ten's TV deal is also broken down, and get nitty gritty into the numbers.

Tulane has some really good new uniforms, so we talk about those too. And other stuff!

You can find us on iTunes, thanks to our fancy iTunes page, or our fancy SB Nation podcast page. You can also subscribe via RSS on Android and Windows Phone devices. If you're listening on iTunes, writing us a nice review would certainly help other people find the show.

The Ohio State Women’s Track and Field Team finished up the season at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championship out west – in Eugene, Oregon.

First up for the Buckeyes was senior SoSo Walker who earned Honorable Mention All-America honors in the 400-meter dash with an 18th-place time of 53.44.

Next up, senior Alexis Franklin raced to a time of 57.07 in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing 12th overall for the Second Team All-American.

Honorable Mention All-America honors in the 200-meter dash went to redshirt senior Aisha Cavin, who finished 18th overall in a time of 23.64.

In the field category, senior Alyssa Gary earned Honorable Mention All-American – her first All-American award at Ohio State – with a 23rd-place finish at 15.24 meters (50-0).

The 4×400-meter relay – freshman Karrington Winters, Cavin, Walker and Franklin – closed the day with a 16th-place finish overall in a time of 3:35.38, good for Second Team All-American honors.

Cavin, Franklin and Walker each earned a pair of All-American awards Thursday, bringing their career totals at OSU to nine, five and five, respectively. Winters earned her first All-American honor as a Buckeye.

The Women’s Team this year produced some exciting moments. It all played quite well to the end too. We at Buckeye Nation are proud.

Great Year Ladies.

Sam-150x150.jpg

The season for Softball is over for the Buckeyes. They finished up the year 34-20-1 overall and were 13-9-1 in Big Ten play. Their season came to a screeching halt in Knoxville on May 22 in a loss to Tennessee 10-1. But we aren’t here to discuss that. They had a fantastic year and deserve notice. Our hats go off to the Scarlet and Gray Softball Team of 2016.

What we are here to discuss is Making The List. The season of baseball, softball, track, swimming, etc., is upon us. With The Ohio State University announcing the inductees for The Ohio State University Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2016 I have suddenly found an obvious inductee into our own wall of honor.

Sam Marder is the only three-time All-American in program history, finishing her career at Ohio State by cementing her status as one of the greatest power hitters in the Buckeyes history after setting both the single-season and career records for home runs (19 and 61, respectively). The 2010 OSU Female Athlete of the Year from Calabasas, Calif., wrapped up her career with a .384 batting average, .778 slugging percentage and .571 on-base percentage. These are ALL records – to this very moment at OSU. She also holds the record for RBI’s (191), total bases (438) and walks (232). A four-time Ohio State Scholar Athlete, Marder’s walk total ranks No. 5 all-time in NCAA Division I history, while she is also 26th in career home runs and her slugging percentage is the 15th-highest.

Marder was named the Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year in 2009-10 after her senior season. She was the leader of a senior class that finished with 159 wins—second-most in school history—achieved the program’s highest national ranking (No. 12).

In 2009, her junior year, Sam led the nation with a school-record 67 walks – including 18 intentional. Behind the plate, she threw out 16-of-21 base-runners, including two during the NCAA Tournament. Led by Marder, the 2009 Buckeyes went 47-11 and advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals.

In her sophomore year , Marder was an at-large selection to the Third Team All-America list after leading the nation in on-base percentage (.633) and walks per game (1.07, 60 total) while ranking second in batting average (.475) and eighth in slugging percentage (.842). Marder was also ranked among the national leaders in RBI (25th, .96 per game) and home runs (14).

On September 9th of this year Sam will be at a dinner that will announce this year’s (2016) Inductees for The Ohio State University Athletic Hall of Fame. And the following day at halftime of the Football Game versus Tulsa Sam will be a part of the small group introduced to the feverish Buckeye crowd. I am certain Sam’s blood will be boiling with Scarlet and Gray pride and a tear or two will come her way. Because such an honor just does not come to everyone. And Sam Marder just happens to be one of those that it has arrived.

Great job Sam!

“ Hell, there are no rules here – we’re trying to accomplish something…” ~ Thomas Edison

Leave it to Thomas Edison, an Ohioan and considered “The Father Of Invention”, to appropriately summarize the goals for the 2016 Ohio State football team. No rules – just accomplish something.

“Something” is a pretty vague and open concept. Considering how much talent Ohio State lost to graduation and the NFL Draft, considering how I have written throughout spring practice about how 44 players on Ohio State’s roster are either redshirt freshmen or true freshmen…Damn right, Mr. Edison. There are no rules. Ohio State fans are just looking to see what this team can accomplish against a much tougher schedule in 2016 than 2015, with tremendously talented, yet inexperienced, players.

**

Nebraska Cornhuskers (Game 9)

2016 OSU Opponent Ranking: 7 out of 12

Players Recruited By Ohio State: N/A, surprisingly. Ohio State did recruit DL Greg McMullen years ago, but McMullen announced his intention to quit football earlier this spring.

Game Date: November 5, 2016

Kickoff Time: 8pm EST, telecast TBD on ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2

Location: Ohio Stadium

Rationale For The Ranking: Nebraska was truly snakebitten during 2015. Coming off a 5-7 season under Mike Riley, the Cornhuskers can only go up, right? Right?

Here’s a better reason why I think Ohio State will be in good shape for this game ~ Nebraska will be coming off another road game, at Wisconsin. Ohio State has a challenging game of their own the week before against Northwestern, but at home. Oh, by the way…This is a night game in Ohio Stadium. Do you think Urban Meyer may be wanting to send a message as November begins? I was in attendance in Ohio Stadium in 2012 the last time Nebraska visited; I have no doubt the crowd will be revved up for this one also.

Prediction: Ohio State will be coming off a home game against Northwestern, while who knows what kind of condition Nebraska will be in after a road game at Wisconsin. Look for many of Ohio State’s top recruits to be in attendance, as Coach Meyer always salivates at the opportunity to showcase Ohio State football in night games. This could be a preview of The B1G Championship Game in December, depending on how Nebraska responds after such a trying 2015 season.

Previous Rankings:

8 – at Maryland
9 – Indiana
10- Rutgers
11- Bowling Green
12- Tulsa

An in-state target for Thad Matta and the Buckeyes dropped his group of 10 potential schools on Thursday

Young down to 10

From the 2017 class, small forward Kyle Young (Massillon, OH / Jackson), who Ohio State offered not even one month ago, dropped his list down to ten schools – and the Buckeyes made the cut. The 6'6, 205-pounder trimmed his list from 16 schools.

The schools schools still in the mix for Young besides Ohio State are: Butler, Clemson, Florida, Michigan, Michigan State, NC State, Purdue, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The good news for the in-state Buckeyes is that according to the 247Sports Crystal Ball, Ohio State is the odds on favorite to secure the commitment from Young at this point in time.

So blessed and thankful for all the amazing schools that have recruited me. I have narrowed it down to 10 pic.twitter.com/6tHaKA1jvA

— Kyle Young (@kyleyoung3144) June 9, 2016

Young comes in graded as the 100th best prospect in the 2017 class. The four-star prospect also grades out as the third best player in the state of Ohio, one spot below the aforementioned Wesson, and also 18th at the small forward position.

If Head Coach Thad Matta and the Buckeyes were able to reel in Young, it would bolt them into 4th in the 247Sports Composite team rankings. As of now, the only recruit committed to play for Ohio State from the 2017 class is Kaleb Wesson (Westerville, OH / Westerville South).

However, it is worth mentioning that it is very early to pay super close attention these recruiting rankings, as there is plenty of time for things to get shuffled around.

Martell talks Buckeyes

In a brief discussion with Luke Stampini of 247Sports.com, 2017 QB Tate Martell (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) shared his thoughts on Ohio State, which may very well put a smile on the face of many Ohio State fans. In the link, Martell references his good relationship with head coach Urban Meyer and Co-offensive coordinator Tim Beck, and speaks on the success of Meyer.

"He’s obviously had success, every single one of his quarterbacks has been a Heisman Trophy candidate," Martell said of Meyer. "That offense being able to run the ball, pass the ball, whatever he needs to do with the quarterback. It’s always worked for him obviously. He’s always done really well, had winning records."

It is worth mentioning that in the interview piece, Stampini writes that the Buckeyes are considered the favorite for Martell. Not earth shattering news because that definitely seems to be the consensus right now but it is nice to hear for Buckeye fans as Martell will be in Columbus this weekend for a visit to the campus.

At Land-Grant Holy Land, "Tate Watch" has been covered extensively. Below are a few great pieces covering the recruiting of Martell, as well as his recent invitation to one of the premier QB camps in the United States.

dawson.0.0.jpg

One of the premier offensive weapons in college baseball is taking his talents to the next level.

Ohio State baseball's Ronnie Dawson was selected by the Houston Astros with the 61st pick in the second round of the 2016 Major League Baseball amateur draft, on Thursday evening. Dawson is the highest-drafted Buckeye since pitcher Alex Wimmers went 21st overall in 2010.

The 6'2, 225-pound Grove City, Ohio native had a monster junior campaign in 2016, slashing .331/.419/.611. Dawson showed off all of his tools in helping lead Ohio State to a Big Ten tournament championship and its first NCAA tournament regional berth since 2009, leading the team with 85 hits, 55 runs scored, 25 doubles, 13 home runs, 51 runs batted in, and 21 stolen bases. For good measure, he also finished the year on a career-high 12-game hitting streak.

Those numbers resulted in Dawson being named third-team All-American by both Baseball America and Louisville Slugger and to the All-Big Ten first team.

During the Buckeyes' Big Ten tournament title run, Dawson was the catalyst. He earned Most Outstanding Player honors after hitting .578 and breaking tournament records with 15 hits and six doubles. His heroics included a 10th-inning go-ahead home run against Michigan State and a first-to-home sprint in the ninth inning to score the go-ahead run in the championship game against Iowa.

For his career, Dawson slashed .316/.395/.517, with 50 doubles, 24 home runs, 110 RBIs, and 47 steals. He is the only player in program history to amass at least 50 doubles, 20 home runs, and 40 stolen bases in a scarlet and gray uniform.

While still having a year of eligibility remaining, being drafted in this position makes turning pro a no-brainer. Dawson was one of the top positional college prospects in this year's draft, possessing a rare combination of power and speed. With his work ethic and talent, he may someday be seen in big league stadiums across the country.

In two seasons for the Buckeyes, Samuel has only touched the football 98 times, but has recorded eight touchdowns.

"The Buckeyes have an established superstar in quarterback J.T. Barrett. But part of the excitement around Samuel is the mystery surrounding who he could be."

- Brian Bennett, ESPN.com

There are plenty of spots up for grabs on the offensive side of the football for Ohio State heading into this season, but the most exciting player on this year's offense might be someone who has already seen plenty of work in his first two seasons in Columbus. Curtis Samuel made a name for himself in 2014 during his freshman year by rushing for six touchdowns on just 69 touches for the Buckeyes. Last year saw a decrease in the involvement of Samuel in the offense, as he touched the ball just 39 times. A lot of the reasoning for Samuel seeing less activity was because of the reliance of Ezekiel Elliott in the run game, as well as the offense struggling to find their footing for most of the year.

With Elliott and H-back Braxton Miller having moved on to the NFL, it seems like all the cards are falling into place for Samuel to have a big impact this year. The question is how will Urban Meyer utilize Samuel. Not only can Samuel be used as a running back, where he is averaging 6.9 yards per carry through his first two seasons with the Buckeyes, but the junior could also take over at H-back. During the offseason, Samuel had surgery to repair a foot problem, but he should just fine for the season opener. After being on the field for a select number of plays during his first two seasons, it sounds like Meyer is ready to unleash Samuel this year.

"I think any time in football when you've worked with different people, there's relationships. But make no mistake about it, when you compete, you compete."

- Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Greg Schiano via Dan Duggan, NJ.com

After spending 11 seasons as the head coach at Rutgers, where he compiled a 68-67 record from 2001-11, Greg Schiano returned to New Jersey yesterday for the Tri-State Showcase recruiting camp. Schiano left Rutgers to coach the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but now returns to the college coaching ranks as an assistant on Urban Meyer's staff. After guiding the Scarlet Knights to just three wins in his first two seasons in Piscataway, Schiano really started to make his mark on the program. Before Schiano took over as head coach, the only appearance Rutgers had made in a bowl game came all the way back in 1978. In six of the last seven years Schiano was in charge, he led his teams to six bowls games, notching at least eight wins in five of those years.

Now former Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Chris Ash is in charge of the football program in Piscataway. Ash knows that had it not been for the hard work that Schiano put in during his time at Rutgers, Ash might not be where he is today. While both Ash and Schiano had great things to say about each other at Wednesday's camp, which featured more than 1,000 high school players, things will be quite different on the first day of October. Then the Scarlet Knights will travel to Columbus to take on the Buckeyes. Even though Schiano and Ash will be facing their former programs, it will be all business for their squads.

"I think it's something that's overlooked, but this year we may get to see it. I like playing receiver. It's another opportunity to get out in space and get the ball in your hands."

- San Francisco 49ers running back Carlos Hyde via Joe Fann, 49ers.com

During his first two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, Carlos Hyde has only hauled in 23 passes, but he is intrigued by the idea of Chip Kelly using him more as a receiving threat out of the backfield. Last year Hyde hauled in 11 passes, but had the former Buckeye played more than seven games that total might have been a lot higher. During the first two days of San Francisco's mandatory minicamp, Hyde has the 49ers first-year head coach with his hands. The growth of Hyde's receiving skills could make him an even bigger threat for the 49ers, after he started to make a name for himself last season before injuries shortened his sophomore campaign.

It's no secret that Kelly likes to get the football in the hands of his running backs out of the backfield through the air. In 2015, Philadelphia's running backs caught 128 passes, while San Francisco's running backs caught just 87 passes. The improvement of Hyde's hands certainly has him looking like a three-down back this coming season, which could allow for him to put together a true breakout season, which he looked to be on his way towards last year before the injuries hit. After tallying seven touchdowns in his first two seasons in the NFL, it seems like a safe bet that Hyde will at least double that number if he is able to stay healthy throughout the season.

"Former Ohio State football player Ray Griffin is one of four former college players who had lawsuits filed on their behalf Wednesday alleging they suffer from the effects of concussions suffered during their college careers."

- Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

40 years after his time at Ohio State, Ray Griffin is one of four former college football players who have filed suit against the NCAA and Big Ten after alleging they suffer from the effects of concussions they suffered during their college careers. The other three players involved in the suit haven't been named, but were identified to have played for Tennessee, Michigan, and Duke. The suit seeks to be a class action lawsuit, representing "all individuals who participated in Ohio State's varsity football program between 1952 and 2010."

Griffin is the brother of two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin, and he went on to play in the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals for seven seasons. Griffin might be best known during his time at Ohio State for intercepting a pass in the 1975 Ohio State-Michigan game, which setup a game-winning touchdown run by fullback Pete Johnson, which earned Ohio State a spot in the 1976 Rose Bowl. Griffin alleges that during his time at Ohio State he was subjected to repeated head impacts in practices and games, and suffered numerous concussions each year. Throughout the years Griffin has started to experience severe depression, short term memory loss, anxiety, impulse problems, anger issues, and other debilitating problems.

LGHL Why we should pump the brakes on Michigan as a top-5 preseason team

Why we should pump the brakes on Michigan as a top-5 preseason team
Chad Peltier

499069470.0.jpg

We've talked about why Michigan should be a great team before. Here's why we should pause before anointing them playoff contenders.

Earlier, we looked at the most compelling reasons why Michigan has garnered multiple top-5 preseason poll rankings.

Among the reasons both the data and media members give for including Michigan among the likes of Alabama and Clemson are Michigan's statistical performances last season (eighth in the final F/+ rankings), solid recruiting (a 55% blue chip rate), and several star players including Jabrill Peppers, Jourdan Lewis, and incoming number-one recruit Rashan Gary. The strength of the team is clearly supposed to be the defensive line and secondary, where last year's strong defense almost entirely returns.

But there are plenty of reasons why the data isn't exactly abandoning the Buckeyes as Big Ten favorites. Let's dig in to where the Wolverines might be deficient in 2016.

About the quarterbacks

Let's get it out of the way from the beginning: Michigan currently does not have a quarterback. Noted Quarterback Whisperer Jim Harbaugh managed to get a serviceable performance out of Iowa transfer Jake Rudock last season -- enough for Rudock to get drafted by the Lions in the sixth round -- but that one-year experiment now means that Michigan is back to square one.

One of the primary challengers, Wilton Speight, served as Rudock's backup last year, but his action was extremely limited. Speight managed just nine completions on 25 attempts for under a hundred yards. He turned in a more efficient spring game performance, going five for six, but his primary competition is presumptive favorite (and Houston transfer) John O'Korn.

O'Korn has the momentum even after sitting out last season, and should enter the year with more team and playbook experience than Rudock had to begin 2015. Even despite his early shakiness, Rudock was developed in Harbaugh's system quickly, eventually providing a steady enough hand to lead the 17th-ranked passing S&P+ attack. But this critical uncertainty makes it difficult to really buy stock in the Wolverines offense.

The defense could use some linebackers

Speaking of uncertainty, how about replacing an entire starting position group? James Ross, Joe Bolden, and Desmond Morgan have all left, leaving only Ben Gedeon with significant experience at the position. Bolden and Morgan led the team in tackles, and their loss, along with senior defensive back Jarrod Wilson, is the only reason Michigan only returns 73% of their defensive experience from last season. As Bill argues in that article, returning defensive backs matters significantly more in terms of predicting defensive S&P+ than any other defensive position group, but a mostly-green linebacking corps isn't exactly a dream situation for the Wolverines defense.

The other side of recruiting -- contending with Ohio State

Michigan's recruiting was a strength last week. Despite moving from Brady Hoke to Jim Harbaugh and the rollercoaster of expectations that coincided with declining expectations in the previous regime and the subsequent coaching transition, the Wolverines have maintained an exceptional blue chip recruiting ratio of 55%. That's certainly reason to put them ahead of most of the field for College Football Playoff contenders.

The issue is that Michigan's primary rival and division mate has recruited even better -- and really, significantly better. Where Michigan recruited 48 blue chip players to Ann Arbor, a 55% blue chip percentage, with an average 247 Composite Ranking finish of 17th over the last four years, Ohio State has snagged 69, with a 71% blue chip percentage, and an average finish of fourth.

Ohio State could essentially field an entire extra starting offense and defense worth of blue chip recruits that Michigan doesn't have on their roster. Where Ohio State has been consistent in recruiting, with fourth, seventh, third, and second-place finishes, Michigan had fifth, 37th, 20th, and fourth-place finishes due to the coaching transition.

Accumulated talent is a strong predictor of on-field success, which is why, as Bud said back in 2014, Ohio State "is the safe bet to win the Big Ten every year."

The offense is not very inspiring, even outside of the quarterback race

Going back to Bill's chart of returning experience, Michigan is 76th overall in returning experience (Ohio State is ranked much lower here, obviously) with only 53% of the offensive experience returning.

Sure, Michigan returns De'Veon Smith, who is hot off a 100-yard Citrus Bowl performance, and has four-star and former Buckeye commit Kareem Walker on the way, but the Wolverines rushing attack ranked just 61st on the year in rushing S&P+ and 52nd in adjusted line yards. The only early All-American level candidate on offense is probably tight end Jake Butt, who at least joins experienced wideouts Jehu Chesson and Amara Darboh. These are all strong, experienced skill players, but it would be a stretch to expect a top-20 rushing attack, given last year's offensive line performance, the lack of returning offensive experience outside of the top receivers, and the need to break in a new quarterback.

Problems on the road

Michigan's schedule is interesting. Don't be surprised if the Wolverines appear to justify a top-5 or top-10 preseason ranking through the first seven games. Of their first seven opponents, only Penn State has a remote chance of knocking the Wolverines off, though they've got quarterback turnover and a new offensive coordinator to break in as well.

But Michigan faces their three toughest opponents all on the road at the tail end of their schedule next year, beginning with Michigan State at the end of October. From there, the Wolverines face Iowa and Ohio State on the road in the last five weeks of the regular season. The optimistic way of looking at this is that it gives the team time to develop -- especially for a green quarterback. But it also means that the Wolverines could cruise through easy games and not give us a true sense of how good they are or not until late.

Overall there's no doubt that Michigan is going to be a good, if not great, team in 2016. Jim Harbaugh has the chance to prove he won't follow Brady Hoke's path of diminishing returns following a stellar debut season. But the biggest issue for Michigan's success in 2016 isn't any issue on the team -- even the quarterback race. Instead, it's Ohio State and The Game. Which is exactly how it should be -- for both teams.

The former Ohio State standout returned to his roots.

James Shields' White Sox debut didn't exactly go as planned.

After a brutal outing (2 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER), Shields was jeered with boos as he left U.S. Cellular field.

But when one door shut, it opened a window ... er, of sorts.

One time Ohio State star J.B. Shuck, a utility player for the White Sox, isn't exactly lighting the world on fire with his pinch hitting at the moment. He's managed to cling on to his roster spot with his versatility though, and Wednesday night allowed him to put that on full display.

Trailing the Nationals 10-0, Shuck was called in to pitch for the first time ever in his major league career. Though he'd seen action in relief in the minors, Shuck hadn't pitched at the highest level after serving as a left-handed starter part-time for the Buckeyes.

Despite a tiny bit of rust, Shuck looked the part, hitting 91 mph on the radar gun and even retiring NL MVP Bryce Harper:

Shuck seemed to take the experience in stride, as he told MLB.com's Scott Merkin post game:

"I started for three years [at Ohio State]. It was an adrenaline rush. You joke around about it all the time, but you get out there and it was like all right, here we go."

You can read more about Shuck's inaugural go as a major league pitcher at MLB.com, including the Nationals who faced him's reaction to seeing his on the mount debut.
