The Buckeyes just grabbed a five star QB BOOOOOOOOM!

Ohio State currently already has a quarterback in the 2017 class, four-star Danny Clark. But the Buckeyes have been active over the last several months in trying to secure the services of a second, more dual-threat QB to add to this class. And today, they found their man, in a big way.

Five star quarterback Tate Martell, of Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, committed to Ohio State. Martell, who visited Ohio State in late March, was previously a Texas A&M commit. He reopened his commitment on May 5.

Martell is the top ranked dual-threat QB in the nation, per the 247Sports Composite. He's also the top ranked player in the state of Nevada, and the 33rd best recruit in the entire country. His commitment, should it stick, would be a monster addition for the Buckeyes, serving as one of the top recruits in what is already shaping up to be a historically great class.

Martell's commitment also likely is a very positive sign in Ohio State's hopes to land five-star wideout Tyjon Lindsey, who played high school football with Martell and is very close to him. The Buckeyes have been pursing Lindsey doggedly, and his commitment would even further cement Ohio State's grip on the top ranked national recruiting class.

At 5'10, 203 pounds, Martell brings a very different look to Ohio State's QB room, when compared to other Buckeye quarterbacks like Dwayne Haskins and Joey Burrow. While a capable passer, Martell is much more of a running threat, more akin to what Braxton Miller brought to the table. His addition gives additional flexibility to the kinds of packages Ohio State can use in the future, as there isn't a true dual-threat QB currently on the roster (although Burrow, Haskins and Clark aren't exactly statutes).

Martell picked Ohio State over USC, Cal, Alabama, and virtually every other major player. Expect other schools, especially USC and Cal (where he has a relationship with their offensive coordinator) to continue to recruit Martell over the next several months.

The possible All-American got a taste of his own medicine for once.

Ohio State's annual women's clinic took place Sunday.

While the need for such a clinic when so many women are already active and/or lifelong football fans is a bit of a debated issue, that the event remains so popular and allows for plenty of women from the Central Ohio area and beyond to interact on a personal level with the OSU coaching staff each fall can't be considered anything but a good thing. Buckeye Nation is big and diverse and if there's a chance to cater to a specific subset of it once a year of all levels of football expertise, sign me up.

While the annual afternoon long event in the past has offered little in the area of GIF-able moments, this year proved to be the exception.

During some tackling drills, in which the women attendants were able to practice their tackling form, one woman in attendance gave Ohio State captain Raekwon McMillan a lesson in what it feels like to be tackled by an All-American talent:

Does anyone know if she has any eligibility left?

Here's a few other photographic highlights from this year's women's clinic, which once again seemed to be a smashing success:

Great turnout for the Women's Clinic today! Best Buckeye fans out there! pic.twitter.com/0Dk71CHZLi

The Buckeyes capped their season by seeing six players selected in the three days of the MLB Draft.

The Major League Baseball draft came to an end on Saturday, and the Ohio State baseball team made quite a nice showing. After left fielder Ronnie Dawson was selected in the second round by the Houston Astros on Thursday and center fielder Troy Montgomery went in the eighth round to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, four more Buckeyes were taken on the draft's final day on Saturday.

Jacob Bosiokovic, Michael Horejsei, Nick Sergakis, and Tanner Tully all had their names called by big league clubs, and will now have the opportunity to make their professional dreams a reality.

Bosiokovic was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 19th round, No. 560 overall. A redshirt junior, the Delaware, Ohio native slashed .275/.347/.488 in 2016, with 11 home runs and 34 runs driven in. Bosiokovic has a year of eligibility remaining due to sitting out 2015 after Tommy John surgery, but his recruiting class is the group of seniors that will be departing the program.

Horejsei went to the Chicago White Sox in the 21st round, the 626th player selected. As a shutdown left-handed reliever, the Cleveland St. Ignatius product appeared in 34 games as a senior, going 1-0 with a 2.61 earned run average. Horejsei limited opposing hitters to just a .156 batting average, sported a 0.84 WHIP, and had a 4.33-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Sergakis capped off a tremendous senior year by being drafted in the 23rd round, No. 700 overall, by the defending National League pennant-winning New York Mets. The Columbus native was a first-team All-Big Ten honoree in 2016 after slashing .332/.451/.542 with 18 doubles, 10 homers, 47 RBIs, and 15 stolen bases. Sergakis was in the top ten in the conference in slugging, on-base percentage, runs scored, hits, RBIs, doubles, home runs, walks, hit by pitch, and total bases.

Tully, who was also a first-team All-Big Ten selection, was taken in the 26th round by the Cleveland Indians with the 782nd pick. The lefty from Elkhart, Indiana went 8-3 as a junior in 2016, with a 2.59 ERA. In three seasons, Tully is 18-10 with a 2.93 ERA, and was named Freshman of the Year in the conference in 2014. With a year of eligibility remaining, he will have a big decision to make as to whether to go pro or take his chances at boosting his draft stock as a senior.

That's a lot of talent Ohio State will be looking to replace in 2017, and a testament to how special the 2016 season was for the Buckeyes. Congratulations to this group of draftees, and good luck to them in their professional careers.

PCLogo_women-150x150.jpg

I mentioned to Joe that I’d come out of “retirement” to do this recap. It involves Ohio State Women’s golf (sort of), a prestigious, local (for me) amateur tournament and a top notch course that I’ve played a few times. Why wouldn’t I dust off the Dell and put something together?

This week (June 8 – 10) marked the 5th edition of the Women’s Porter Cup (WPC) played on the beautiful Niagara Falls Country Club (NFCC) in Lewiston, NY. The event is 54 hole stroke play that features an international field. The Buckeyes were well represented in the 83 player field (Jaclyn Lee, Zoe-Beth Brake, Niki Schroeder and Jessica Porvasnik). The Buckeyes were also represented well, with all four players finishing in the Top Twelve..

I’ve played NFCC several times and the vistas of the Niagara Escarpment from the closing holes and the clubhouse are stunning. The course is also a load to play; it is narrow, tree lined and is heavily bunkered. The challenge to golfers are the numerous bunkers that always seem to come into play and the wind that can come ripping across Lake Ontario and up the Escarpment. You need to bring your “A” game to Lewiston. Okay, so much for the travel guide, back to the tournament recap…

Overall

The Buckeyes were a force in this event. If the Porter Cup was a team event, Ohio State would have absolutely rolled. Jaclyn Lee tied for 3rd place with a score of +3, 216. Zoe-Beth finished in 5th place with a score of +5, 218. Niki Schroeder finished in 9th place with a score of +9, 222 and Jessica Porvasnik finished tied for 12th place with a score of +11, 224.

Curiously, in the player profiles and scoring, Zoe-Beth was listed as “Zoe”. If she keeps playing this well, she can go by any name she chooses. In last year’s WPC, Jessica tied for 4th with a score of -1, 212. Jaclyn tied for 16th spot with a score of +8, 221 and Zoe-Beth tied for 49th with score of +21, 234.

On a layout and during conditions where players found it difficult to break par, the Buckeyes had two outstanding performances. Jaclyn Lee’s opening round of 68 was the best score of that round and Niki Schroeder’s final round 69 was the 2nd best of that round. In the field of 83 players, there were only 5 rounds in the 60’s. Ohio State players had two of those rounds.

Coaches Hession and Strom, as well as the players had to be thrilled with this performance. This event was another good experience for these returning Buckeyes. The more high level events they play, the better they’ll be in the upcoming season.

1st Round

Wednesday’s 1st round was played in October-like conditions. Temperatures were in the low 60’s, sky was overcast and winds were blowing 25-30 miles per hour. All in all, challenging playing conditions. How’d the Buckeyes do? Let’s find out.

Jaclyn Lee

Jaclyn navigated the testy conditions well, shooting a 68 (-3) to gain the top spot after 18 holes. She was one of only two players to break par (71) on the day. Like I said, these were challenging playing conditions.

Zoe-Beth Brake

Zoe-Beth/Zoe shot a solid 73 (+2) to place her in the top five. A good start for her.

Niki Schroeder

Niki rolled into the clubhouse with her round of 73 (+2). Okay, I see a trend starting with the Buckeyes.

Jessica Porvasnik

Jessica shot a … you guessed it… 73 (+2) to join her Buckeye teammates in the top 12.

If this were a team golf event, the Buckeyes would be in good shape right now.

2nd Round

Thursday’s 2nd round was played in somewhat better conditions; at least the sun was out. Temperatures were in the low 70’s, the sky was sunny and winds were blowing 15-20 miles per hour. All in all, these were still challenging playing conditions. Let’s check in on the Buckeyes…

Jaclyn Lee

The course got the better of Jaclyn on Thursday, since she shot a 76 (+5). The 180 yard par-3 4th hole crimped her score as she recorded a triple bogey 6. Aside from this hole, Jaclyn played a solid round.

Zoe-Beth Brake

Speaking of solid rounds, Zoe-Beth was 1 under par through 16 holes, before bogeying #17 and #18 to finish at 72 (+1).

The 17th hole plays as a short’ish par 5 for the women, but it is all uphill. From the #17 teebox, you’re starting to climb back up to the top of the Escarpment. The green has enormous bunkers left and right of the green as well as front left and front right of the green. That’s a lot of sand to navigate through, particularly playing uphill. There isn’t much in the way of visual keys to assist with shot placement.

The 18th is the hallmark hole of the course. It’s a 175-yard par-3 that is all carry on the tee shot, since you’re still climbing to the top of the Escarpment. It is framed with huge bunkers front left, front right, rear right and rear left. When you stand on the tee box, you see… sand. There is also a pronounced back-to-front slope to the green, so being above the flag is no bargain. For a little ol’ par-3, this is a tough finishing hole.

Niki Schroeder

Niki didn’t fare too well, shooting an 80 (+9) for the day. Some days are like that. Fortunately, she played well in the 1st round, and there is a 3rd round to be played.

Jessica Porvasnik

Jessica kept things under control with her round of 74 (+3). She’s still in the top ten at this point.

3rd Round

Friday’s 3rd round was played in gorgeous conditions. Temperatures were in the mid 70’s, sky was sunny and the winds were a light breeze. How’d the Buckeyes do?

Jaclyn Lee

Jaclyn recovered from her 2nd round score by shooting 72 (+1). This placed her tied for 3rd place, only 1 stroke out of 2nd position.

Zoe-Beth Brake

Zoe was impressively consistent with a score of 73 (+2). Her three rounds were 73-72-73. All pretty damn good rounds in windy conditions on a course where level lies and flat putts were hard to come by.

Niki Schroeder

After Thursday’s not-too-good round, Niki bounced back with a 69 (-2) to move her into 9th place. Niki tied for 2nd low score of the day.

Jessica Porvasnik

Jessica shot a closing round of 77. This was probably not the kind of final round she was anticipating. Still, she has played well at NFCC in her two appearances.

LGHL Meet Ohio State's new number one wide receiver, Noah Brown

Meet Ohio State's new number one wide receiver, Noah Brown

usa-today-8322911.0.jpg

While his coming out party was delayed for a season, Noah Brown is ready to take the Big Ten by storm.

Ohio State is in dire need of some new production at wideout, but luckily, they have some options. If you aren't familiar with Ohio State's redshirt sophomore Noah Brown, go ahead and fix your eyes on the motioning wide receiver positioned on the top of the screen in the below video. It'll make you feel better about everything.

At 6'2 220 lbs, Noah Brown is a force to be reckoned with on the football field. The physicality that Brown displayed in the above clip was on constant display in 2014, and it was enough for Brown to be one of the few freshman during head coach Urban Meyer's tenure to not require a redshirt. While Brown and his one career catch didn't exactly fill up the stat sheet as a freshman, Brown's presence as a great perimeter blocker gave the Buckeyes' offense a reliable backup for starter Evan Spencer.

Unfortunately, Brown's true coming out party was put on hold, as a broken leg during Ohio State's 2015 training camp sidelined Brown for the entire season. Having cut weight in the off-season from a hefty 245 lbs to a lean 222, Brown was set to start from day one for the Buckeyes before his terrible injury.

You don't often see a college wide receiver with one career catch penciled in as a playmaking starter, but with Brown, this may just be the case. Receivers with Brown's willingness to block don't simply fall off trees, and it seems 2014 was simply scratching the surface of Brown's abilities as a receiver. Plus, it's not like we haven't seen receivers continue to succeed after breaking their leg. But just where does all of this Noah Brown hype come from?

"I feel like personally he was one of the best receivers last year...Him and Mike (Thomas) were pretty much unguardable last year." - Terry McLaurin

Similar to Ohio State's redshirt freshman running back Mike Weber (who could be beast), much of what we know about Brown's ability comes secondhand. While redshirt freshman receiver Terry McLaurin may have given Brown his highest praise yet, McLaurin is far from the only one excited about the possibilities Brown brings to Ohio State's offense. I realize no Ohio State teammate is exactly going to go on record saying Brown is a bad or average player, but when you're receiving this type of praise from these types of people, it's usually for a good reason:

J.T Barrett: "I think a lot of people forgot about Noah Brown...Noah Brown was going to be a big part of our offense going into Virginia Tech until he got hurt."

Curtis Samuel: "Nobody had really seen what he could do, but Noah is a big-time player...He came in every day when players weren't here, always working on his hands, always watching film. We knew he was going to have a big season. Him having that setback, it hurt us a little bit."

Kerry Coombs (cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator): "Noah Brown is a phenomenal player...He's back, so I'm not worried about last year. I'm on to this year. He's playing. He's going to be a great player. He's hard to cover. He's a big, strong buck who can catch the ball. He is a tough dude."

And finally, King Urban: "Every injury is awful...it's not even close, it's the worst part of the job...Your heart goes out to him. You never want to say you feel more sorry for this guy but a guy like Noah Brown, there's nobody that worked harder. He was playing very well."

Typically praise for an relatively unknown player falls in one of two buckets. They're either a very talented prospect who is still learning the ropes , or they're the hard practice worker who keeps trying and trying to crack the starting rotation. It looks like with Brown the Buckeyes may have the best of both worlds. Brown's impact on the field should play a huge role in defining the Buckeyes' 2016 offense, thanks to two key attributes that it appears Brown brings to the table.

Perimeter Blocking

While it was a short lived storyline, Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott started off the 2015 season with a bang, but had a mini slump (for Zeke's standards at least) for the next few weeks. Following an electric 80 yard touchdown run on his first carry of the season, Elliott kept his streak of 100 yard games alive in the following weeks, but the big plays fans had come to expect from Elliott were missing. If Elliott could break off multiple 50 yard runs against the likes of Wisconsin and Alabama, why couldn't he do it against Hawaii and Northern Illinois?

The answer, as Meyer explained, lied in the Buckeyes' perimeter blocking. Few receiver rooms in America stress blocking as much as Ohio State, but the group of Jalin Marshall (former high school quarterback), Braxton Miller (former quarterback, year one at wide receiver), and Michael Thomas (inconsistent blocker) while talented, failed to provide the type of consistent downfield blocking that could really spring a big run.

Obviously the 2015 Buckeyes made adjustments to improve their perimeter blocking (including the move to more two tight end sets and the utilization of Paris Cambell and Curtis Samuel as reliable blockers), but this really was an issue that more people should have seen coming into the 2015 season. 2014 had Evan Spencer's legendary blocking ability, Corey Smith's knack for devastating blocks is well documented, and of course Brown was well on his way to establishing himself as a great blocker.

This could be the secret that no one is talking about for the 2016 Ohio State offense: Brown, Smith, and Samuel could very well be the best group of blocking receivers in the country. Elliott was a master at turning nothing into something, but the more chances Ohio State running backs get to run untouched through the secondary, the better.

The look of a true number one receiver

With Mike Thomas gone, Barrett needs a new primary receiver in the passing game. Who better to fill the role than the ‘big, strong buck who can catch the ball'? Maybe a large, talented, physical and hard-working wide receiver is exactly what the doctor ordered for Barrett and the Buckeyes' offense.

The reason why I'm more willing to believe in the hype surrounding Brown versus say Torrance Gibson (not to say I'm down on Gibson) is because the hype is rooted in college production. Yes, that production has been mostly been seen in practice thus far, but that is still much better than the typical case of a new receiver being a high school stud or track star.

And guess what, worst case scenario Brown fails to become the same wide receiver he has been in practice. Opponents still better watch out, because Brown is a football player, and if not getting 50+ receptions this year is something that could anger Brown, Big Ten linebackers better keep their head on a swivel because Noah Brown is coming.

Bold. Brilliant. Benevolent. Or, in a word, Buckeyes. Across the country, people often think “sports powerhouse” when they think of The Ohio State University. And make no mistake: The school’s earned that reputation by winning the first-ever playoff for the college football national championship last year and turning in several outstanding performances on the gridiron and in several other sports for several decades now. But those who are part of this close-knit community — whether they live in Columbus, Colorado Springs or Corpus Christi — know that OSU has more to offer than top-notch athletics. Much more. Euro 2016

France sqeeks by 2-1 on Payet's sweet shot.

I don't think there are any perfect teams and this is perhaps the most open European tournament in some time:
France (my favorite to win) struggled a lot with Romania and has a shaky defense. Griezmann is in a funk going back to his missed penalty in the Champions League final.
Germany saw a couple of defenders retire after the World Cup and has injuries on the defense as well.
Spain is in transition from its golden era.
Belgium is 2nd in FIFA rankings but are stuggling to break through into being an elite tournament.

I am personally rooting for France, Ireland, and Poland.

Ohio State's speedy center fielder has a chance to make his professional dreams come true.

Ohio State baseball's Troy Montgomery was selected by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim with the 246th pick in the eighth round of the 2016 Major League Baseball amateur draft, on Friday afternoon. Montgomery joins teammate Ronnie Dawson, who went 61st overall to the Houston Astros, as Buckeyes chosen in this year's draft.

The Fortville, Indiana native had high expectations entering his junior season in 2016 after receiving second-team All-Big Ten honors the previous year and being named a preseason third-team All-American by the NCBWA. Montgomery had a rough start to the year, but came on strong at the close of the regular season and into the Big Ten tournament and NCAA regional, finishing up with a .297/.423/.466 slash line, 14 doubles, eight home runs, 34 runs batted in, and 21 stolen bases.

Montgomery hit .500 (6-for-12) in the final regular season series against Minnesota, followed that up with a .409 (9-for-22) showing in earning Big Ten All-Tournament team honors at the conference tournament, and capped his year off with a .600 (6-for-10) average in the NCAA tournament.

A very successful 2015 campaign that saw him slash .317/.431/.493 with 12 doubles, six triples, four home runs, 27 RBIs, and a school record 35 stolen bases put Montgomery on the map and made him one of the top positional prospects in the Big Ten.

The head coach also called out a kid who wasn't paying attention and touched on the importance of showing respect.

"When you go visit the high school coaches in the state of New Jersey, a lot like in our home state of Ohio, they care about you, not as a football player only, but as a student, as a person, what you're doing on the field and off the field."

- Urban Meyer at New Jersey Satellite Camp Held At FDU

Amid the wildly contested satellite camp discussion among college football coaches and fans, teams are hot on the trail this summer so long as they aren't violating any NCAA rules. Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer and his staff, including New Jersey native and former Rutger's head coach Greg Schiano, joined former Buckeye coach and current Rutgers head coach Chris Ash for a camp held at FDU.

Meyer lauded Schiano's work ethic and football tenacity having come from the Garden State, and drove home that New Jersey is a very important part of the recruiting trail for Buckeye football, with the state producing some of his favorite talent since his time coaching at Notre Dame.

He was sure to include points about the latest graduating set of Buckeyes finished their collegiate career with 50 wins in four years, along with a National Championship and over a dozen(!) NFL draft picks. Meyer stressed the importance of the off-field stuff being just as important as the work they do on the field, noting that these young players are being watched very closely and how attendees can make the most of their time in front of coaches.

"It's not often that a coach will tell a player to skip practice, especially a rookie quarterback as raw as Jones."

- Jeff Hunter, Buffalo Rumblings

Cardale Jones was minutes away from practice last week when a text message from head coach Rex Ryan changed his path from the Bills' facility all the way to Cleveland. Ryan insisted that Jones make his way back to Ohio to be present at the birth of his son, Owen, telling the quarterback he would regret it the rest of his if he missed it.

Jones was particularly thrown aback when the head coach reached out and put this personal moment ahead of the team's needs. The rookie quarterback made it to the hospital just in time to see his second child born; a memory that was followed by officially signing his NFL contract days later.

BREAKING: @LILBTHEBASEDGOD officially curses D'Angelo Russell
It's our @Toyota Best of the Best segment!https://t.co/imKC7y9NCk

Not that former Buckeye, and No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, D'Angelo Russell needed anything else to curse his career -- he got it anyway. After a rookie season with the Los Angeles Lakers that included significantly little playing time, in addition to the Nick Young/Snapchat debacle that landed Russell on a short list of snitches in the league and his teammate in hot water with his fiance.

Following the ordeal, there were reports and rumors that his teammates weren't speaking with him and found it hard to trust the young player. Trust with secrets is one thing, but when that lack of trust makes it's way to the court, you got Russell essentially being the victim in a game of "keep away". When asked how much worse things could get for the team and specifically the rookie, Lil B bequeaths, "a lot".

Still eight months away from his 21st birthday, Russell has a lot to learn, but plenty of time to get there and get back in the good graces of his teammates, colleagues and fans.
