With an outstanding incoming recruiting class, Michigan has the second-best odds behind Alabama for this year's college football crown.

"The Wolverines, though, have seen their odds recently jump. Michigan now has 7 to 1 odds to win it all, with Clemson, Florida State and Ohio State trailing Jim Harbaugh’s program with 8 to 1 odds."

-Andrew Holleran, College Spun

Despite the Alabama Crimson Tide remaining the overall favorite to win the third College Football Playoff this season, the Michigan Wolverines are creeping up as the next-best option. According to updated ratings from the Las Vegas SuperBook, Alabama has 5 to 1 odds of winning their second-straight national title. Ohio State is very much in the hunt, however, sitting at 8 to 1 odds to win it all this season. Even with the loss of a dozen starters from last year’s team, which finished at 12-1 and capped the season with a Fiesta Bowl win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Buckeyes return quarterback J.T. Barrett, and still have Urban Meyer running the show. The most obvious test for Ohio State early in the season will be their matchup at Oklahoma. A win could lend significant credibility to the young Buckeye squad, but the game is early enough on the calendar that a loss would not knock the Buckeyes out of the playoff hunt altogether.

Nick Saban’s squad returns a number of key contributors from last season, along with a top recruiting class, all of which places the Tide in prime position for a repeat.

While Jim Harbaugh’s team is unproven, with an untested quarterback and key losses on defense, they have a relatively easy non-conference schedule which could help them to gain the necessary experience early in the season to carry them through to the playoff.

Clemson, like Alabama, returns as a favorite in early odds to win the playoff, but will likely face a similar path through the Tide itself to win a title. Fortunately for the Tigers, they also return their starting quarterback and Heisman finalist in Deshaun Watson.

Finally, Florida State will have to face off against Clemson for a shot to even play in the ACC Championship. However, if the Noles are successful, they have a clear road to the playoff and, potentially, a national championship.

"There’s a certain amount of pressure on second-year guys in summer league to take over. They’re the only players with actual NBA star power and experience at the event, so they’re supposed to deliver a level that is higher than the rookies and players on the outside trying to get into the NBA."

-Matt Moore, CBS Sports

After a rookie season filled with questions about his work ethic, maturity and star-power, Los Angeles Lakers point guard D’Angelo Russell is starting to prove his potential in the NBA’s summer league. And for the second-year player out of Ohio State, this is a critical time to do so, given that he must prove himself to be better than everyone else on the court during summer play.

While Russell was able to get into a rhythm late last season on the court, reported issues off the court with his teammates--specifically Nick Young--left many wondering what his role would be come next season, and how his maturity level might affect the team as a whole, especially as new head coach Luke Walton takes the reigns in L.A. Combined with the loss of Kobe Bryant to retirement, the struggling Lakers are seriously in need of star power.

However, the Lakers are now 2-0 this summer, riding on a game-winning three-pointer from Russell against the Philadelphia 76ers Saturday. Russell has averaged 21 points per game along with 7.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists. While it was largely due to Russell’s play, behind a team-high six turnovers, that the Lakers were in a position to need a last-second game winner, Russell managed to turn it around in the fourth quarter, hitting four of his final six shots to close it out.

Despite struggles for the Lakers as a whole, Russell’s game got stronger as the season wore on. He averaged more than 15 points per game after the All-Star Game, compared to a dozen before, and will have an opportunity to continue to improve moving forward under a new regime in L.A.

"He’s one of those punishing backs. He’s a three-down back. He can do it all: Catch it out of the backfield, he can run between the tackles. He has enough speed to break the long ones. He’s definitely a three-tool player that can just play on every single down. And it helps out the defense a lot."

-Dallas Cowboys safety Barry Church, via Tom Pelissero and Eric Coleman, SiriusXM NFL Radio

Former Ohio State Buckeyes running back Ezekiel Elliott may actually have an impact on both sides of the ball for the Dallas Cowboys come the start of the 2016 season, as his consistent rushing could provide an aid to a struggling defense. With Dallas Cowboys’ defensive ends Randy Gregory and Demarcus Lawrence suspended for four games to start next season, and linebacker Rolando McClain suspended for 10, the Cowboys will likely be relying on a consistent, punishing rushing attack to give the dissipated defense time to recoup between drives, breaking down opposing defenses and flipping the battle for time of possession in favor of the Cowboys. While the Cowboys are actively seeking replacements for the three suspended players, it is unlikely that the fill-ins will be able to adequately make up for what has been lost on the defensive side of the ball, meaning that Elliott could prove to be a key contributor in keeping the defense off the field as much as possible.

Like in 2014 behind Demarco Murray, the Cowboys will be aiming for prolonged drives centered around a strong running game. According to safety Barry Church, that’s what kept the defense fresh in the fourth quarter, allowing for the defense to get more turnovers and win games. As is the case now, the 2014 Cowboys defense was unproven heading into the season, but was able to pull together behind a solid offense. Though finishing No. 19 in the league in total defense, the Cowboys managed 1,650 total rushing yards, placing them among the top-10 in the NFL.

random police shooting

And now from my hometown :sad2:

Source: At least 3 dead in shooting at Berrien County courthouse

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -- At least three people are dead at the Berrien County Courthouse following a shooting, an employee at the county prosecutor's office said.

Three people are dead and one person is injured, said the employee, who wished not to be named. Michigan State Police confirmed the shooting around 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 11.

Two of the people dead are court bailiffs. The other person dead is the shooter, the employee said.

State police have not confirmed those numbers nor the status of the shooter.

The employee at the prosecutor's office said the courthouse is under lockdown, and employees are being kept in their offices.

A Berrien County Commissioner told WZZM's ABC affiliate WBND reporter Vahid Sadrzadeh on scene that a man who was on his way to jail took a gun off a deputy and started opening fire.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder tweeted that police have secured the scene at the courthouse and have begun their investigation.

If you haven’t caught Pokémon Go fever, consider yourself among the fortunate.

Columbus has rapidly become a hot bed for aspiring Pokémon trainers with folks walking, riding their bikes, and driving all around town on the quest to be the very best like no one ever was.

For those not initiated, the game is an ARG, or alternate reality game, that uses your iPhone or Android device to turn run-of-the-mill GPS navigation into a means to collect mythical creatures only you and other players of the game can see. Once you capture those virtual characters, you can participate in battles, for fun, against fellow Pokémon enthusiasts.

Though the game’s not been without its fair share of controversies, it came to light over the weekend that the Ohio State Buckeyes’ own Ohio Stadium was harboring Pokémon — seemingly at the 50-yard line no less:

While probably not a rare enough breed to merit facing potential trespassing charges in an attempt to capture it, that’s surely not stopping some brave young Buckeyes from giving it the ol’ college try.

The New York Jets’ (and former OSU standout) Darron Lee sure seems to be one of them:

The former Buckeye is headed to the team the Cavs beat in the Eastern Conference finals.

A week after tweeting that “change is coming”, former Ohio State star Jared Sullinger appears to be headed north of the border to continue his professional basketball playing.

As first reported by The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Sullinger is expected to sign a one-year deal worth $6 million with the defending Eastern Conference runners up, the Toronto Raptors.

Sullinger, a Columbus native, had spent his entire four year NBA career with the Boston Celtics. He started 77% of the C’s past three seasons of games but with the addition of Al Horford, became expendable. Sullinger joins fellow former Buckeye Evan Turner in departing Brad Stevens’ side.

At the end of Sullinger’s rookie season, he was arrested for domestic violence. While the victim attempted to drop the charges and later refused to testify in court, prosecutors still pushed to convict Sullinger. The charges were later dismissed.

Clothes Call: Ranking the top 10 Big Ten football uniforms
Brent Yarina, BTN.com Senior Editor via Big Ten Network

Uniform rankings are a summer staple. It makes sense. After all, people love uniforms, plus it seems like no two fans feel the same way about a design. Speaking of designs, nowadays, most teams almost have too many to count, much less rank accurately. For example, a team could have the best primary designs, but it’s alternates or loud helmets could bring the overall collection down. How does a ranker account for that? As a result, I thought it would be fun to rank my top 10 Big Ten uniforms worn in 2015. Here’s my list, in descending order. 10.

But that's okay!

If there is one college football narrative that many Ohio State fans wishes was dead and buried, it’s "the Big Ten stinks", followed by "Ohio State doesn’t play anybody." Buoyed by a few years of unlucky out-of-conference scheduling and high profile failings in out-of-conference games by their conference brethren, many fans hoped the dead horse had finally been beaten enough, after Ohio State won a national title in 2014, followed by the resurgence of the Michigan football program under Jim Harbaugh.

But if a few early season prognostications are right, it might not be the last we hear of it.

Apparently, Phil Steele has the Big Ten ranked last in his early season power rankings, setting off a bit of a kerfuffle on Twitter:

Phil Steele has the Big Ten ranked last in the Power 5 conference ratings. I'd like to hear why you all might agree/disagree!

— Jourdan Rodrigue (@JourdanRodrigue) July 9, 2016

Is that fair? After all, lots of other conferences have some pretty lousy teams. To get a better idea, let’s take a look at the math.

The 2016 projected S&P+ rankings came out a few months ago. This metric ranks teams based on their per-play performance last year, returning production, recruiting, and recent success. All 128 programs are ranked. Based on these projections, here are the average ranks of each Power Conference program.

Conference Average S&P+ rank
SEC 28.71
ACC 37.64
Pac-12 40.75
Big 12 43.1
Big Ten 44.87

And here’s how the conference stack up in average S&P+ rating.

Conference Conference S&P+ average
SEC 12.8
ACC 9.2
Pac-12 8.3
Big 12 7.7
Big Ten 7

So, if the math is accurate, the Big Ten is, in fact, projected to be the worst Power conference. The margin behind the Big 12 isn’t very large, but it is there.

Why doesn’t S&P+ like the Big Ten as much?

For starters, because many high profile programs lost so much production. Virtually everybody from last year’s Ohio State team is now in the NFL, and high achieving programs like Michigan State and Wisconsin are also replacing huge swaths of players. As a result, even though all three programs have been consistently solid, the S&P+, and likely Phil Steele, discounts them a bit.

There’s also the question of depth. The Big Ten is weighed down by two struggling programs (Rutgers, at 87, and Purdue at 88), with another three clocking in outside the top 50, more than any other power conference. With the bottom of the league staffed by either very inexperienced head coaches, or perhaps some questionable hires, it’ll take a few more years before the conference can claim the level of depth that others can.

Dead weight, plus the top teams getting discounted (only Michigan cracks the top 10, and only three Big Ten teams make the top 25), equals a lower average rating than their power conference peers.

There’s one potentially large asterisk to the S&P+ ratings. These were compiled in February, before everything fell apart with Baylor. The Bears are ranked 13th in the projections, but with a new coach and only half of their 2016 recruiting class, it is entirely possible that ranking drops dramatically by the first week of the season. If the Bears are only a top 30ish team instead of a top 15 program, the Big Ten could vault the Big 12 in the conference rankings.

The question is, would the Big Ten’s struggles dramatically hurt Ohio State this season? Probably not.

The Buckeyes are going to get the benefit of the doubt, thanks to their out-of-conference road trip to Oklahoma, perhaps the premier out-of-conference game of the entire college football season. The Buckeyes also drew one of the best possible games from the Big Ten West (Wisconsin, Nebraska, Northwestern). If Michigan and Oklahoma are as good as the preseason prognosticators think they are, nobody will care that Indiana, Rutgers and Maryland aren’t very good this season. Ohio State will have the quality wins needed to make a playoff push.

The Big Ten is recruiting well in the 2017 class, and there’s reason to be optimistic that depth will continue to improve over the coming seasons. It may not manifest itself this season though, and you may hear cries that the Big Ten stinks again, especially if the conference stumbles in a few big games in September.

But even if that’s true, it shouldn’t hurt Ohio State too badly. And who knows? The day that narrative dies for good might not be too far away.

Future Buckeye J.K. Dobbins took home first

Nike’s The Opening owned the recruiting coverage over the weekend, as the top players throughout the country made their way to Oregon to compete at the event. For skill position players, they are tested using the "SPARQ" rating system. This particular point system helps measure overall athleticism for players taking into account their speed, power, agility, reaction and quickness.

In addition to the testing, skill athletes are also put onto seven-on-seven teams and compete in one-on-one drills. As for linemen, they are also tested as well and perform one-on-one drills against each other. A huge chunk of Ohio State commits and target were at the event over the weekend – and a lot of them stole the show.

Buckeye commit best in SPARQ testing

As for the testing, the top overall score went to running back commit J.K. Dobbins (La Grange, TX / La Grange), who impressed with his 4.45 40-yard dash time. Coming in second and third place overall were current targets Jeffrey Okudah (Grand Prairie, TX / South Grand Prairie) and Cam Akers (Clinton, MS / Clinton), respectively.

Opening Top 5 Test Scores

5. Darrian Felix 138.38
4. Devon Hunter 139.53
3. Cam Akers 140.13
2. Jeffrey Okudah 142.56
1. JK Dobbins 146.76

— Scout Recruiting (@scoutrecruiting) July 8, 2016

Ohio State has been the longtime leader for Okudah while they are also making a push towards the top of the list for Akers. Wide receiver target Tyjon Lindsey (Corona, CA / Centennial) also posted impressive numbers during the testing session; his 3.86 shuttle time was tops at the event.

Lindsey is announcing his collegiate choice in August. Right now it looks as if Ohio State is the leader here with Nebraska running second.

Myers impresses in testing

In the trenches, offensive lineman commit Josh Myers (Miamisburg, OH / Miamisburg) posted good numbers of his own with a 5.13 40 time, a shuttle of 4.5 and nearly a 30 inch vert. He checked into the opening at 6-foot-6, 310 pounds and these numbers solidified why he's one of the best lineman prospects in the country. Myers was not able to put on the pads and compete during that session because Ohio state rules do not allow players to participate with pads during these summer months.

Garrett good in one-on-one

A player who did participate in many one-on-one drills and had success was defensive line commit Haskell Garrett (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman). Garrett showed his brute strength in testing – qualifying for the finals in bench prep reps. Then, when it came to competing, he held is own and mostly won drills against some of the best OLs at the camp.

Martell-Grimes-Lindsey find Connection

Tate Martell (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) and Trevon Grimes (Fort Lauderdale, FL / St.Thomas Aquinas) had big performances of their own at The Opening.

Martell showed over and over again why most recruiting sites have him as the No.1 QB, as the Bishop Gorman star put on a show during the seven-on-seven games. It helped that he had Grimes and Lindsey on his team--all of which are in the running to become Buckeyes. Grimes showed his pure athleticism and advanced ball skills as he stole the show, also solidifying why he belongs being rated at the top of the wide receivers for 2017.

It's fair to say that the current commits of the 2017 class for Ohio State definitely stole the show at this year's Opening.

Not a commit, but 2018 defensive end Xavier Thomas (Florence, SC / Wilson) is also at The Opening and proving his five-star rating. The 6-foot-3 prospect announced his top four on Sunday and it was a list that included Ohio State. From South Carolina, the Buckeyes will have their work cut out for them battling the two in-state programs as well as Florida State. However, Ohio State remains in a good position and will need to get him back on campus as soon as possible.

No matter what metric you use, this will be an extremely talented team.

The 2016 Buckeyes will be the most talented overall Ohio State team in years -- and maybe of all time.

Following last year's check-in on recruiting trends, I've updated the 4-year rolling 247 Composite recruiting rankings by both point totals and average rating. I've also added two new columns, which use a rolling weighted average that favor experience and seniority, discounting the impact of younger recruiting classes. The idea was to get a sense for how much talent is ready to play, in that more time in the system theoretically should mean more effectiveness -- and that freshmen rarely start at Ohio State.

Overall, these four-year averages, both straight and weighted, are intended to be an estimate of overall team talent. Two of our best predictors for next season are recruiting -- through metrics like blue chip percentage and the 247 Composite Team Rankings -- and last year's performance -- through metrics like the S&P+ and F/+.

Using any possible metric -- straight rolling four-year averages of either total recruiting points or average rating or weighted rolling four-year averages -- this should be the most talented overall team that Urban Meyer has fielded at Ohio State.

Urban Meyer has produced top-ten F/+ finishes at Ohio State since the 4-year straight rolling talent average hit 89.32 -- which means that the average player on the Ohio State roster was a borderline four-star recruit. The overall talent level has only increased since then, where the average player is now at 90.24 -- a firm four-star recruit.

The total point averages confirm the depth of talent at Ohio State and is really shows a more dramatic uptick in talent. While the four-year average point totals have been constant at around 289 points, the weighted rolling average point totals show that the talent in the system is getting more experienced. Now those former blue chip recruits are veterans -- players like Raekwon McMillan, J.T. Barrett, and Sam Hubbard.

As the overall talent base improves, consistency becomes easier to predict -- which is why anything less than a top-ten F/+ finish would be a surprise, despite heavy personnel losses to the NFL.

Commitment Watch: Buckeyes Still Looking to Land First Pledge for the 2018 Recruiting Class
Eleven Warriors
At the end of July 2015, Ohio State already had commitments from ten 2017 prospects. Two of those players – Akron's Todd Sibley and Florida's Bruce Judson – have since moved on, but that doesn't change the fact that the Buckeyes got off to an extremely ...

How the Big Ten spends its summer vacation: BTN LiveBIG
BTN.com staff via Big Ten Network

When it comes to the Big Ten, summer is less about kicking back on the beach and more about giving back. Athletes, coaches and alums from schools like Minnesota, Ohio State, Purdue and Rutgers often spend the summer teaching youth campers how to replicate the skills they’ve learned over the years. In other cases, Big Ten schools let their work off the field make the difference as they teach kids to hone their conflict resolution skills or go to work in communities wracked by crime and income inequality. For these men and women, living BIG expands on the concept of teamwork and creates

Too funny.

D'Angelo Russell is quickly attempting to rebrand himself from contentious "snitch" to viral meme human being.

While the hubbub about Russell's accidental leaking of a teammate's filmed confession of infidelity was nothing if not a bit overblown, D-Lo's doing a great job of winning hearts and minds amongst younger fans and any basketball enthusiasts who enjoy a personality, even if he's getting some crusty "keep it classy" types a bit mock outraged in the process.

In the Samsung Summer League's early game of the summer which saw No. 2 pick Brandon Ingram and the Lakers square off against No. 1 pick Ben Simmons and the Philadelphia 76ers, a surprisingly thrilling post (pre)-season exhibition came down to a 69-67 final possession with the Lakers possessing one last shot for a win with under two seconds to go. D'Angelo didn't fail to deliver:

As if that wasn't enough, Russell immediately showcased his trademark sense of humor with a little bit of light-hearted vulgar self deprecating edge in the process:
He then capped things off by taking a low key potshot referencing former Sixers GM Sam Hinkie's famed motto, "trust the process", a process which saw the Sixers go 47-199 under his reign but routinely accrue high draft picks for their futility:

D'Angelo Russell might not be the hero we need, but he's the hero we deserve.

Will the Buckeyes defense revolve around McMillan?
Scarlet and Game
In 2016, McMillan will be counted on for his leadership – and after leading the defense and all of the Buckeye draft picks in tackles, that shouldn't be a problem. But McMillan is also effective in coverage. A good comparison could be Alabama LB Reggie ...

Baby Registry Shopping (shoot me now)

Went with my wife today to create a registry for our baby. Went around the store and scanned 175 items to add to our list. It took 3 1/2 hours. Aside from wanting to shoot myself, I saw some pretty interesting brands that kept it somewhat interesting.
