No Need For OSU To Feel Defensive About Playing These True Freshmen

via our good friends at Buckeye Battle Cry
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

On August 7th, Ohio State began their fall camp. While expectations are always high for Ohio State football, what type of expectations await the true freshmen who will be Buckeyes? Considering how young Ohio State is across the board, are there any true freshmen who will possibly be able to make an impact?

On defense, Ohio State has several options. Some of these players’ names will not surprise you, as Buckeye fans have been hearing about some of these names since February, when the players signed their letters of intent with Ohio State.

Let us begin with the defensive freshman who has fairly, or unfairly, been the focal point of the 2016 recruiting class ever since he committed to Ohio State – Nick Bosa. Bosa is coming off a knee injury that ended his high school career, and Ohio State has pledged to not rush Bosa into the lineup. That being said, below are some points being made about Nick Bosa that should excite Ohio State fans as the 2016 season approaches…

@OhioStAthletics d-line coach Larry Johnson told me he never has had a true freshman like DE Nick Bosa. pic.twitter.com/oaRbkM3p7v

— Tom Dienhart (@BTNTomDienhart) August 9, 2016

Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer has never struck me as being a very patient man. I believe it will be extremely difficult to remain patient with Nick Bosa, especially when the talent Bosa possesses is staring Coach Meyer and Coach Johnson in the face every day at practice. Bosa may not start, but look for Bosa to be in the rotation along the defensive line a lot this season.

Linebacker is not a position of need for Ohio State this season. With Raekwon McMillan returning, and players such as Chris Worley and Dante Booker ready to contribute at the outside linebacker positions, the idea of not playing some of the true freshmen at linebacker must have crossed Coach Meyer’s mind, right? Think again…

Urban Meyer tells 97.1 The Fan that he has no doubt that linebacker Keandre Jones will play his freshman year.

— Lori Schmidt (@LoriSchmidt) July 26, 2016

Lastly, I am going to name Jordan Fuller from the secondary as a probable true freshman who can make an impact this season for Ohio State. Fuller was recruited as a cornerback, but has also been receiving practice time at safety. Fuller is too good of a player, and the Ohio State secondary inexperienced at three positions, that it makes sense that Fuller will get some playing time at various points this coming season.

The 2016 season is fast approaching, but positive recruiting news is still heading to Columbus almost daily.

The Buckeyes have nearly completed their first full week of fall camp and updates have been a plenty. Urban Meyer and Ohio State have no shortage of talent and he has made that abundantly clear in several interviews with the media. Countless times, Meyer has mentioned that while there is youth, the talent on the team is what excites the staff the most. The reason the talent in Columbus is off of the charts is due to one thing: recruiting. The off the field efforts Ohio State's staff has done to bring top talent from all over the country is easily noticed by anyone, and that doesn't look like it will be changing any time soon.

Bell plans OSU official visit

To be one of the members of Ohio State's 2017 recruiting class, or to even receive the coveted offer, you almost have to be either a 5-star or 4-star prospect and considered to be atop of the list in the country in terms of recruiting rankings. So far, Ohio State has been able to assemble what will be an historical class when it's all said and done.

Yesterday, one of the recruits who owns an Ohio State offer made it known that the Buckeyes would be one of the teams that receive an official visit this coming fall. Markquese Bell, (Bridgeton, NJ / Bridgeton) said in an article with sportstalksc.com that Ohio State along with Michigan, Clemson, Maryland and Florida would all be schools not only receiving an official visit, but also to be in his final five schools considered to land his services.

#STRecruiting: Officials to tell the tale for Bell - DB Markquese Bell of Bridgeton, NJ is set for all five of ... https://t.co/lEhoARuNBf

— SCRN (@ScrnMarketing) August 10, 2016

The talented New Jersey athlete is ranked as the sixth best athlete in the country and the third best player in the Garden State for the 2017 class. A 6-foot-3, 194-pound product, Bell has the ability to be a force on both sides of the ball with his size and speed. As of now, the 247sports crystal ball predictions have Bell leaning towards staying home and playing for Rutgers, but with the Scarlet Knights not even listed in his final five, it is anyone's race to win to land the talented 4-star.

With numbers tight for Ohio State's remaining spots in the 2017 class, Urban Meyer can be selective. If Bell wants in, it will have to be a love affair from both sides.

Blue Smith tops the charts

Huber Heights Wayne just North of Dayton, Ohio has been no stranger to Ohio State. The legendary quarterback Braxton Miller is just one of the former Warriors to dawn the Scarlet and Gray. Currently, Robert Landers is the most recent Warrior to make the short trek East on I-70 to play for the Buckeyes. The connection between Wayne and Ohio State has been strong and that's something both sides can easily see continuing in the future.

Current Wayne product L'Christian "Blue" Smith, a 6-foot-6, 205-pound monster on the football field is easily the most coveted Warrior Ohio State is after. With exceptional talent in both football and basketball, "Blue" has not made a final decision if it will be the gridiron or the hardwood for his sport of choice at the next level. While he will easily excel at either, many believe football will be the one to win it.

Yesterday, the attention surrounding L'Christian continued as he was given an incredible honor as being ranked as Rivals.com's top athlete in the 2018 class. Made publicly via his Twitter, "Blue" let it be known that his satisfaction has not been met as this ranking will only push the talented 4-star to continue to work on his craft and show why he's the nation's No.1 athlete.

I wanna thank GOD my Family and my Team for making me who I am today..The #1 athlete in the country ain't to bad...! pic.twitter.com/wI2mIq6DqJ

— Błå° (@bluesmith_) August 11, 2016

Jay Minton, head coach of the Warriors, was another to mention the drive and attitude L'Christian sets forth proving that his head is in the right place during the recruiting process. Buckeye fans will hear this household name for the next two years to come and will hope to have him in what has started off to be another incredible recruiting class in 2018.

Buckeyes lead for 2018 LB

Via landoften.com's Jeremy Birmingham, Ohio State is leading for another top prospect. This time, class of 2018 linebacker Adrian Jackson (Denver, CO / Mullen) has mentioned that currently the Buckeyes are the leader in his recruitment. The nation's ninth best outside linebacker and Colorado's top prospect in 2018 went as far as to say that he is not considering any other schools for the time being.

2018 linebacker Adrian Jackson says the Buckeyes lead and he’s not looking at any other schools right now. https://t.co/SkItyPrmSe

— Jeremy Birmingham (@Birm) August 11, 2016

With good news surrounding Ohio State's 2018 class lately, the Buckeyes will hope to secure another top national prospect in Jackson. Look for his recruitment to only escalate from here on.

Now that Jeff Heuerman and Nick Vannett are in the NFL, the redshirt junior feels it is his time to shine.

"I have a pretty good role in the offense, better than (for tight ends) in past years. The way it's looking right now, I have a pretty good role in the passing game. We've changed some reads to where I'll be the first read ... or if the first read's covered, I'll be the second read."

- Ohio State tight end Marcus Baugh via Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

It seems like every year Ohio State fans hear about how the team is planning to get the tight ends more involved in the passing game. The last couple years it is a little more understandable about how those plans never really materialize when the Buckeyes have had other offensive threats like Ezekiel Elliott, Michael Thomas, and Jalin Marshall to lean on. This year could be different though, since Ohio State is so young at their skill positions. One reason where there is some optimism for an increased output from the tight ends is because Ed Warinner has moved from offensive line coach to tight ends coach so that he can focus a little more on his offensive coordinator duties. After seeing the problems Clemson had with Alabama tight end O.J. Howard in the national title game, he is looking for ways to get the Buckeye tight ends more involved in the game if the matchups are right.

The player who could most benefit on some of the increased usage the tight ends might get is redshirt junior Marcus Baugh. So far during his career in Columbus, Baugh has had to sit behind tight ends Jeff Heuerman and Nick Vannett. Both of those players are now in the NFL, so it is Baugh's time to shine. So far Baugh has only caught three passes as a Buckeye, but one of those was a 27-yard reception against Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. Baugh also earned the trust of his coaches during the season last year, averaging 38 plays per game the last eight games after only 15 plays per game in the first five. Baugh has the size, athleticism, and hands that are very attractive as a tight end, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him make some noise in this young Ohio State offense.

"We have been working with each other the whole summer so we built that bond and that chemistry on the field. Once you build that chemistry on the field, you can work together and play together."

- Ohio State linebacker Raekwon McMillan via Jacob Myers, The Lantern

It's no easy task to replace players like Darron Lee and Joshua Perry, but at least Ohio State has the luxury of having Raekwon McMillan to lead this year's group of linebackers. McMillan has already started to establish himself as the latest great Ohio State linebacker, but after having Lee and Perry to lean on the last two seasons, this year the spotlight will be firmly on McMillan. After leading Ohio State in tackles last season, now McMillan will be hoping the linebacking corps don't miss a beat this year even though they'll have two new starters.

Unlike when McMillan started to see time for Ohio State as a true freshman, this year's new starters have already seen some time on the field for the Buckeyes. Chris Worley and Dante Booker have taken some snaps for the Ohio State defense, as well as contributing to the special teams unit. Even though Booker and Worley may be the new starters at linebacker, it doesn't mean they'll be cut any slack. Ohio State linebackers have always been held to a high standard, and this year will be no different. The trio has already spent time in the offseason working together so when the season kicks off they'll be comfortable playing next to each other the field, as they try and help the Buckeyes return to the College Football Playoff.

"I'm approaching this year as a make or break year. I'm going to make it or it ain't going to work. I'm really trying to focus in on this year. To me, this is a huge year."

- Former Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde via Jeremy Bergman, NFL.com

Entering his third season in the NFL, running back Carlos Hyde hasn't exactly gotten dealt the best hand. After being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2nd round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Hyde is already on his third head coach. Hyde started out in San Francisco by backing up veteran Frank Gore in 2014 before taking over as starter in 2015. The former Buckeye running back put the NFL on notice when he rushed for 168 yards and two touchdowns in the season opener, but injuries throughout the year only allowed him to appear in seven games. Now Chip Kelly takes over for Jim Tomsula, who was fired after the 49ers went 5-11 in 2015.

Even though there isn't much on the 49ers depth chart behind him, Hyde doesn't exactly feel like his role in Kelly's offense is safe. That's why the third-year pro is focused on making this year his best. Hyde has spent the offseason getting used to the up-tempo offense that Kelly likes to run, but he is hoping he can mirror what LeSean McCoy did in two seasons under Kelly in Philadelphia. As long as Hyde is able to avoid the injury bug this season, it's likely that he'll have a huge season, since Kelly will likely find ways to get the football into his running back's hands early and often.

"The history of golf, nor Ohio State athletics, cannot be spoken of without this historic venue. Opened in 1916, Scioto Country Club has been thought of as one of America's great golf courses for nearly the entirety of its century-long existence, a credit that will be recognized this year when it hosts the U.S. Senior Open starting Thursday and running through Sunday."

- Jeff Svoboda, Scout.com

For most golf fans around central Ohio the only chance to see the professionals play in Columbus is when The Memorial comes to Muirfield in June. This year the capital city gets an added bonus, as the U.S. Senior Open teed off at Scioto Country Club earlier today. The USGA is returning to Columbus for a major tournament for the first time since 1986 when Scioto Country Club hosted the same tournament. Even though Scioto might not be as popular as courses like Augusta National and Pebble Beach, it is still ranked one of the top 50 courses in the world by Golf Digest.

This weekend's tournament will have a decidedly scarlet and grey feel, but that's not just because the course is a couple miles from Ohio State. Scioto Country Club was the course in which Buckeye legend Jack Nicklaus took his first golf shot in 1950. Nicklaus will be serving as honorary chairman for this week's event. While Nicklaus will be overseeing the event, Ohio State will have four former Buckeyes competing in the event. John Cook, Joey Sindelar, and Rod Spittle will all be paired together for the first two rounds of the event, and Brian Mogg will be also be in the field. Mogg, Cook, and Sindelar all helped Ohio State capture the 1979 national title. Hopefully a great weekend of golf is in store for fans in attendance, and it doesn't take 30 years for the USGA to make their way back to Columbus for another major.

Here's who voted Ohio State No. 1 in the AP Top 25
Matt Brown

One AP pollster loves him some Buckeyes.

The full AP preseason poll won’t be released until Aug. 21, but we know that it will have at least one surprising vote for the top team in the country: Ohio State.

John Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News, has published the ballot that he’ll submit to the AP already, and he’s picked the Buckeyes as his top team in the country.

Here’s Wilner’s rationale:

No. 1: Ohio State. Not ready? Too much attrition? Wait ’til 2017? Nah. Urban Meyer proved two years ago that he can make it work ahead of schedule. Yes, the Buckeyes were slammed by departures to the NFL, but they have experience where it matters most (QB J.T. Barrett), there are future draft picks everywhere, and motivation shouldn’t be an issue after last year’s disappointment. Get ’em early — that means you, Oklahoma! — or get the heck out of their way. (Previous: 1)

Wilner also noted that he fills out his preseason ballot as a reflection on how he thinks things will finish in the end, not for who might be best in early September, so his vote is a sign that at least one AP voter thinks Ohio State will be this year’s national champions.

It’s probably also worth mentioning that Wilner is no stranger to using his AP ballot to dramatically distance himself from the opinions of his peers. If you hear about a ballot that seems dramatically different from the rest of the Top 25, there’s a good chance it’s coming from Wilner.

The 2016 Coaches Poll was released last week, with the Buckeyes ranked fifth, ahead of Michigan and every other Big Ten team. Ohio State did not get any first place votes, though. We’ll see if Wilner will be the only one on the 21st.

The 4-star CB Jamyest Williams also revealed his decision date

Decision date set for Williams

As of today, Ohio State’s top ranked 2017 recruiting class features three prospects at the cornerback spot. The Buckeyes already have secured verbal pledges from Amir Riep, Shaun Wade, and Marcus Williamson but that hasn’t took them out of the mix for yet another top flight player at the position.

2017 cornerback Jamyest Williams (Loganville, GA / Grayson), the eighth best CB in the class, released his group of top schools on his Twitter account and, sure enough, Ohio State was one of the five that were included.

As you can see, the other schools that the Buckeyes will be battling for the 5-foot-9, 170-pounder include Clemson, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. Williams, the nations 57th best prospect, also revealed the date in which he will be making his selection — August 27th.

Right now, the 247Sports Crystal Ball currently favors the Gamecocks to land the four-star defensive back.

Unfortunately for Ohio State, they have yet to rack up one single prediction for Williams. With that being said, unless Head Coach Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes pull off something miraculous in the next two weeks, it’s a safe bet that the Loganville native will not be playing his collegiate ball in Columbus, Ohio.

Wade planning officials

Above we discussed how ‘17 CB Shaun Wade was a member of this years Ohio State recruiting class. That hasn’t stopped the five-star prospect from looking at all of his options.

Wade has taken plenty of visits, despite his pledge to the Buckeyes. Now the 6-foot-1, 177-pounder is beginning to think about official visits. According to 247Sports’ Bill Kurelic, Wade will definitely be taking officials to three schools — Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State.

Kurelic says Wade will be in Columbus on Oct. 8 when the Buckeyes take on Indiana. A visit to Michigan will likely come the week before when the Wolverines take on Wisconsin. Wade’s father, Randy, also told Kurelic that his son would be at Notre Dame on Sept. 17.

Bucks give preferred walk-on offer

On Wednesday, Ohio State dished out a preferred walk-on offer to in-state prospect and 2017 running back Alonzo Booth of DeSales (OH), according to the schools Twitter account. Booth does hold a few full ride offers under his belt for the time being. The 6-foot-1, 235-pounder has secured scholarship opportunities from Ball State, Eastern Kentucky, and Navy.

As one could imagine, it would be tough to turn down the opportunity to play college football for free. However, for all we know, maybe Booth would rather walk-on and spend his college at a program like Ohio State. Booth is a Columbus kid, so an outcome like that wouldn’t come as a surprise but that is something that will be determined at a later date but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on.

Booth is currently preparing for his senior season at DeSales High School. The running back will look to put together a more impressive campaign than last season when he tallied 915 yards and reached the endzone 12 times for the Stallions.
