A weather delay wasn’t going to stop the Bucks from a 2-0 start.

The Buckeyes got off to a very fast start defensively in this one. Tulsa received the opening kickoff, and on the first play from scrimmage, Ohio State came away with an interception thanks to Marshon Lattimore, setting the Buckeyes up in the red zone. Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, they were only able to get a field goal out of the opportunity.

Midway through the first quarter, a failed exchange between J.T. Barrett and Mike Weber resulted in great field position for Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane got all the way up to the Ohio State 1-yard line, and the Buckeyes stopped them on 4th and goal. The hole was too deep for the Buckeyes, and were forced to punt after three downs.

After starting off near midfield after the punt, the Tulsa offense showed signs of life, but the Buckeye defense held firm once again. Raekwon McMillan batted down a Dane Evans pass that would have put the Golden Hurricane in the red zone. They would settle for a field goal, making it a tied game at 3-3 with 3:22 remaining in the first quarter.

The Buckeye offense began to move in the second quarter, where we saw more Barrett completions, and doses of Curtis Samuel. The Buckeyes were able to work their way inside the 10, but the Golden Hurricane defense held up once again, leaving the Bucks to settle for a field goal to make it a 6-3 game with 10:10 to go in the second quarter.

Towards the tail end of the second quarter, Mailk Hooker got his third interception on the season, and turned it into six, giving the Buckeyes a 13-3 lead after the extra point. On the ensuing Tulsa possession, another turnover gave the Buckeyes the ball among the debris flying around the field because of the increased winds.

As the rain began to pour, Ohio State’s defense stepped up yet again, as Marshon Lattimore got his second interception of the game, and channeled his inner Malik Hooker, taking it to the house to put the Bucks up 20-3 with less than a minute remaining in the half.

After a rain delay that seemed like it would never end, play resumed after 6:30 p.m. eastern time. The Ohio State offense came out, and were moving much quicker than they had during the first half. Curtis Samuel again showed some flashes, and the Buckeyes had a good temp going. J.T. Barrett sealed off the opening drive after a solid block by Samuel to put the Bucks up 27-3.

The rest of the third quarter was pretty quiet for both teams, until the Buckeyes drove down the field, thanks in part to a great snag by Curtis Samuel with two Golden Hurricane defenders on him. Mike Weber would finish the drive with his first career touchdown as a Buckeye, with Ohio State up 34-3.

A Gareon Conley interception gave the Buckeyes another shot on offense, and the Buckeyes would march up the field, and was highlighted by a Braxton Miller-esque spin move by Dontre Wilson. Barrett would punch it in for yet another Buckeye score, and his ninth touchdown on the season to put the Bucks up 41-3. Despite the passing game not being as prolific as you might like it to be, the Buckeyes had a good afternoon on the ground.

Dontre Wilson would get his touchdown, though. He capped off a seven-play Ohio State drive with a 5-yard touchdown run, putting the Bucks up 48-3. On the ensuing Tulsa possession, Nick Bosa forced a fumble, and celebrated with that signature shrug. The Ohio State starters would be pulled the next drive, essentially putting the game to an unofficial rest.

3 things we learned:

1. The offensive line wasn’t great early. We expected Ohio State to come into this one pretty comfortably on offense. Tulsa is known as much more of an offensive juggernaut, that has extreme issues on the defensive side of things. That certainly didn’t show in the first half, as it seemed Tulsa was able to have their way for the most part. The front seven was making Ohio State’s offensive line look fairly bad for one of the top teams in the nation, and the offense looked similar to the sluggishness we saw for much of the 2015 season. The pass rush of the Golden Hurricane made J.T. Barrett look very uncomfortable for much of the first half, which was a big reason for the struggles of the Ohio State offense early.

To their credit, Tulsa was much more able in covering Ohio State receivers when they did hold up in the first half of the game. This perhaps shouldn’t be a huge concern yet, with the Buckeyes returning Billy Price and Pat Elflein on the line, along with the talented Jamarco Jones starting for the first time. The talent is there, and hopefully games against Bowling Green and Tulsa have served as good learning experiences before heading into Norman next week to take on the Sooners.

2. The secondary is good. The roster turnover was pretty significant this offseason. The Buckeyes lost essentially all of their secondary, and while there might be some concern there as to how the new starters would respond, it’s been excellent thus far. As previously mentioned, Ohio State’s offense was pretty non-existent for the first half. It was pretty tough to watch early, but the defense (who had their own struggles early), had one heck of an ending to the first half. Malik Hooker got things going, which should be unsurprising after he had a pair of interceptions last week against Bowling Green. He took a Dane Evans pass 26 yards to the house. He would be followed up two and a half game minutes later by Marshon Lattimore, who had a 40-yard interception for a touchdown. It was Lattimore’s second pick of the game, after he intercepted the first pass of the game.

Gareon Conley got in on the interception party, after Dane Evans left a floater in the middle of the field. Conley made the pick look easy, the fourth that Evans had thrown on the afternoon. Outside of the obvious big plays, the Buckeye secondary was great in both zone and man-to-man situations. If there was a pass within reach, hands were getting on the ball, and hits were delivered to jar potential receptions loose. While Tulsa isn’t great by any means, it wouldn’t have been unreasonable to expect them to find the endzone a couple of times during the game, but the defense was strong. It’s been great to see how they’ve played through eight quarters, and it seems Kerry Coombs and Greg Schiano have these guys right where they need to be heading into the Oklahoma game next week.

3. Mike Weber and Curtis Samuel are exciting. The duo have undoubtedly been the highlight of the offense through the first two games of the season. The offense wasn’t exactly exciting today, whether that was because of bad passes, missed blocks, or stuffed runs. Yet whenever Samuel got his hands on the ball, you found yourself holding your breath, not sure of what was going to come next. He had some flashy runs, and an amazing catch in the third quarter with a pair of Tulsa defenders draped on him. Weber would finish up the drive with his first career touchdown as a member of the Buckeyes.

It seemed like Weber had a sneaky good game. A lot of the attention obviously went on J.T. Barrett, and how the passing attack wasn’t as explosive as many would have expected or liked, which is totally understandable. Yet through three quarters, Weber had 15 carries for 87 yards, and a score. It didn’t seem he got the ball very often, but when he did, he did damage. If Weber and Samuel keep their production up, that’s all the Buckeyes would need when the defense plays as well as it did today. At the same time, I wouldn’t expect the Ohio State passing game to be as inconsistent it was today.

It’s a good thing defensive touchdowns count just as much as offensive ones.

It sure seemed like Ohio State was going to head into halftime leading Tulsa, 13-3, thanks to a lackluster offensive effort. The Buckeyes did not have a single offensive touchdown, and with torrential rain approaching, more points in the near future seemed unlikely.

But Marshon Lattimore had other ideas.

Thanks to Tulsa’s puzzling decision to keep throwing down the field, in the rain, Dane Evans threw yet another interception, and Lattimore grabbed his second pick of the day. But this time, he took it 40 yards to the house.

Who needs offensive touchdowns? An all pick-six offense is innovative, sure, but it’s also effective. Now, the Buckeyes can head into halftime with a more comfortable 20-3 lead, and with heavy rains coming, it might be all of the cushion they need to hand the ball off and slog through the rest of the win.

Lattimore joins Malik Hooker is housing Tulsa interceptions on the day. We’ll see if they have another one in store.

Lightning means you have to play it safe.

Despite unexpectedly clear skies to begin Ohio State’s game against Tulsa, the Buckeyes offense struggled to find much in the way of an identity.

Buckeyes miscues a plenty let Tulsa keep things interesting, before a combination of the Golden Hurricane making mistakes in their own right coupled with a nasty storm front rolling into Central Ohio allowed the Buckeyes to put some distance between them and the visitors.

But with the rain came lightning and with lightning a mandatory delay of at least 30 minutes. As patrons scurried out of the stands into under the awnings of Ohio Stadium to begin halftime, notices throughout the facilities gave fans an update as to the weather situation:

The message here at Ohio Stadium. Lightning causing at least a 30 minute delay. Start of delay is 5:25. #OSUvsTulsa pic.twitter.com/MREUv9nNNE

— Lantern Sports (@LanternSports) September 10, 2016

The Best Damn Band in the Land’s halftime show was ultimately canceled due to the weather situation as well.

If the 30 minute count is from when the delay was first announced, the second half should be expected to resume around 6:02 p.m. ET. Worth keeping in mind each additional reported lightning strike within a 10 mile radius could lead to that start time being pushed back further.

All he does is make big plays.

Ohio State sophomore Malik Hooker reads the quarterback eyes better than just about anyone.

Not even a year after he reportedly quit the football team multiple times as he struggled to adjust to both college life and the rigors of major college football, Hooker’s turned into one of OSU and Urban Meyer’s secret weapons.

After a sluggish, lackluster (look ahead to Oklahoma?) start to the Buckeyes’ game against Tulsa, Hooker took matters into his own hands and expanded OSU’s lead just as a series of storms made their way into Columbus:

If Hooker keeps making plays like this, days like Saturday’s when the Buckeyes’ offense struggles to get into gear — though not ideal — will be far more palatable.

What Do You Want To See? Tulsa

Buckeyes will need to pressure the QB this week.

Due to gaffe on my part, we failed to run the season-opening edition last week.
But What Do You Want To See is back and better than ever. I hate that cliché but oh well.
Each week our crack staff, and our staff on crack will present a wish list of sorts, highlighting expectations for the OSU game that week.

Ready?

Chip

Interior DL play: Hill and probably Jones will be tested against Tulsa this week. The loss of Sprinkle has OSU very inexperienced at a position where recruiting has not been strong.

Better pass rush: Yes, BG was getting rid of the ball quickly, but OSU was not making the Falcons rush throws. OSU was fortunate to have BG’s WRs drop several passes.

More JT Barrett runs on passing plays: If the receiver isn’t open, take what they give you on the ground for positive yardage scrambling upfield.

JT Barrett needs to run a bit on passing plays that aren’t there.

Quicker rotation of the backup players: No reason to keep anyone in if there is a huge lead in the third quarter. The 2014 season is still very fresh in my mind; play Burrow and Haskins. Play the backup OL, LBs, secondary, etc.

Scott

A win: Can’t lose to this team.

A shutout: Defense only gave up three last week. Let’s see Tulsa blanked.

No injuries: Can not afford any with Oklahoma coming up.

Burrow: Get it over with early so Joe can get some more minutes.

Brandon

Defensive line pressure: It was hard to see against BG because the QB did not hold onto the ball long. OSU needs to pressure Tulsa and its high-powered passing attack.

Sound coverage in secondary: I think they are still working out the kinks back there as Lattimore and Webb work into game shape. A few missed tackles against BG could have led to big plays.

Offense keeps going: Keep the pressure going against Tulsa and don’t let off the pedal. The Buckeyes are running 6-10 deep at WR, continue to move them in and out while keeping the high-tempo.

Mike M.

Health: With Sprinkle going down last week, the last thing we need is anyone else being out. OU may have been embarrassed at NRG in Houston, but being there, it sure didn’t feel like UH manhandled them until very later. They will be tough in Norman.

Stop the broken record: Make it so we don’t all put in “defensive line pressure” next week. I know BG is a quick pass offense, but the young Bucks on the DL should still be able, on talent and technique alone, to beat these OLs they are facing now.

Weber: I know we all love JT and Samuel had his coming out party last week, but Weber will be the key to this offense throughout the B1G schedule. I want to see him continue to grow, power the football when needed, and I would like him to get into the end zone. Last week was a great game for the Cass Tech product, and I am excited to see what else he does.

Ben

A solid win with no injuries: We need everyone healthy when we travel to Norman. I would again like to see more of the second and third team play to gather experience. Just an overall good game put away early so we can focus our attention on Oklahoma.

On the same day, Michigan had two decommitments.

Welcome to a special edition of Ohio State recruiting on Land-Grant Holy Land. Typically, you see the recruiting news from Monday thru Friday, however, some big Buckeye offers went out late Thursday and early Friday – as well as a noteworthy decommitment from the Michigan Wolverines.

4-star ATH gets OSU offer

On Friday, Ohio State made an offer in an attempt to get a head start on their 2019 recruiting class. Jordan Whittington (Cuero, TX / Cuero) got the offer to be part of the Zone 6 family. Through Twitter, Whittington let the world know that he picked up another college offer.

VERY blessed and excited to receive my 10th offer from THE Ohio State University #ZONE6 pic.twitter.com/wBz8VQs8at

— Jordan❄Whittington (@J_Whitt3) September 9, 2016

Being from the state of Texas, it’s only natural that the home state programs have shown interest in the 6’1 athlete. Baylor, Houston, TCU and Texas A&M are just some of the programs interested in keeping Whittington inside the Lone Star State. Because he is a 2019, the recruiting rankings aren’t out for the Cuero star, but, if he’s picking up top tier offers this early in his recruitment, then he has to be the real deal.

As time goes on, we’ll see where Whittington will decide to play at the next level.

California Dreamin’

Ohio State also made an offer to four-star outside linebacker Solomon Tuliaupupu (Claremont, CA / Claremont). Late Thursday evening, the No. 6 OLB in the 2018 class made the news apparent on Twitter that he had an offer from the scarlet and gray.

Blessed to receive an offer from The Ohio State University ☝ pic.twitter.com/7Rf2Wp8PDZ

— Solomon Tuliaupupu (@nokeakua) September 9, 2016

Right now, the 230-pounder holds a total of 16 offers, according to 247Sports. Some of the notable schools that are looking for the services of Tuliaupupu include: USC, Oregon, Michigan and Notre Dame. Two predictions on the 247Sports crystal ball has the Claremont, Calif. native staying on the West Coast – and attending USC.

We’ll have more on Tuliaupupu’s recruitment as the news develops.

4-star ILB decommits from Michigan...

Making a rumbling in the recruiting world, 2018 inside linebacker Antwuan Johnson (Dayton, OH / Dunbar) decommitted from the Michigan Wolverines on Friday morning. Johnson is ranked as the No. 14 player in the state of Ohio and No. 6 ILB in the country.

Johnson made the decision via Twitter that he was going to reopen his recruitment.

I look forward to getting back into this recruiting process pic.twitter.com/j8tdxIbcwS

— Antwuan Johnson (@Antwuan21) September 9, 2016

Jumping onto the radar for Johnson’s services are the Louisville Cardinals. At the moment, Johnson is scheduled for an unofficial visit with the Bobby Petrino coached squad on Sept. 17, according to 247Sports. However, there are eight other schools that have offered the Dayton product a chance to play college football at the next level.

Big Ten programs Iowa and Indiana have offered the 6’1 linebacker, as well as in-state schools Cincinnati and Bowling Green. While Ohio State hasn’t sent an offer toward Johnson, they may take a closer look at the Dunbar High product. Currently, the Buckeyes have two commitments on their 2018 board – and none of them are on defense.

As time goes on, Luke Fickell and Urban Meyer might make the move to keep Johnson inside the Buckeye State.

...and a 3-star decommits from the Wolverines, too

Around the same time as Johnson’s decision to look at other programs, 2017 tight end prospect Carter Dunaway decided to look at his options, too. While the Buckeyes aren’t pursuing Dunaway, a few other Big Ten programs are. Indiana, Nebraska and Purdue all have sent offers to the 6’6 TE from Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

It’s not too uncommon for players to decommit from a program. Ohio State’s 2017 class had two decommitments; the Wolverines now have three. But, if you’re a Buckeye fan, watching the Wolverines lose a commit can only help make your day a tad bit sweeter.

Saturday at halftime of the Ohio State vs. Tulsa game at Ohio Stadium, the Scarlet and Gray faithful will get their first look at the newest members of The Ohio State Athletic Hall of Fame.

Created in 1977, the Ohio State Athletic Hall of Fame has honored 294 male and 116 female student-athletes (Men have been inducted since the inception and Women started being inducted in 1993). The Hall of Fame was created by former OSU AD Ed Weaver with the help of Varsity “O” president Ralph Waldo “To pay tribute and extend recognition to those individuals who through the years have contributed to the honor and fame of The Ohio State University in the field of athletics, and who have continued to demonstrate, in their daily lives, the values learned in intercollegiate athletics”

There are a few eligibility requirements also. The players can not be inducted until at least 5 years after their class has graduated and they must have earned at least one Varsity “O” Letter. For coaches, they must have served OSU for at least 15 years.

The 2016 Hall of Fame class includes 8 new members. The class includes the very first Hall of Fame Athlete from the outstand OSU men’s pistol inductee. He will be joined by the 6th men’s tennis player, the 21st diver, the 24th track & field athlete, the 13th women’s basketball athlete, the 38th men’s basketball athlete, the 6th softball player, and the 22nd baseball player.

The former Buckeyes to be honored are Justin Kronauge (men’s tennis), John Machado (baseball), Jantel Lavender (women’s basketball), Randall Larson (diving), Sam Marder (softball), Dan Taylor (men’s track and field), Evan Turner (men’s basketball) and Paul Zelenak (pistol). The official induction was held last night (September 9th) at a dinner, and meet the public Saturday during halftime of the football game.

Can the Buckeyes keep the points parade going?

With a 77-10 win over Bowling Green in their season opener, the Ohio State Buckeyes moved up to the No. 4 spot in the AP Poll behind just Alabama, Clemson and Florida State. Now, the Buckeyes move on to week two facing the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Ohio State had a very promising start to its 2016 campaign, with a record-breaking wallop of Bowling Green on offense. Quarterback J.T. Barrett left little doubt as to his abilities, having accounted for seven of the team’s 10 offensive touchdowns. Curtis Samuel fit extremely well into his hybrid roll, scoring two touchdowns through the air and one on the ground. And the youth on the team demonstrated that they are ready for the big stage in their opener, with impressive performances on both sides of the ball by the likes of Mike Weber, K.J. Hill and Rodjay Burns.

While many in Buckeye nation are looking ahead to next week, when Ohio State travels to Norman to face a now winless Oklahoma squad, Tulsa is not to be overlooked. Head coach Philip Montgomery, formerly Baylor’s offensive coordinator, has taken the team from a 2-10 record in 2014 to a 6-7 performance last season, culminating with an appearance in the Independence Bowl against Virginia Tech. The Golden Hurricane are now 1-0 on the young season, with a 35-point victory over San Jose State last week.

The Buckeyes can’t afford to look past Tulsa, and will need to close them out of the game early on both sides of the ball. With one game under their belt on the season, the young Ohio State team will need to continue to gel together and improve as they prepare for their big test against an angry Sooners team next week.

When is the game and how can I watch?

Game Date/Time: Saturday, Sept. 10, 3:30 p.m.

Location: Ohio Stadium

TV: ABC

Online: WatchESPN

Radio: 97.1 FM/1460 AM

Where is GameDay this weekend?

After opening the season at Lambeau Field with a shocking Wisconsin victory over LSU, the Gameday crew is heading to Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee for an ACC-SEC matchup between Virginia Tech and Tennessee. This is the first time that Gameday has opened the season at two neutral sites, and is the 75th-different city that Gameday has aired from. Tennessee moved out of the top-10 following a 20-13 overtime win over Appalachian State, despite being 20.5 point favorites. Virginia Tech, meanwhile, comes to Bristol after a 36-13 win over Liberty.

Thoughts on Last Week –

I sure wasn’t expecting that outcome in the first game of the season! The team came out firing on all cylinders – minus that pick-six – and showed it has the potential to be a serious playoff contender this year. When you put up 77 points and 776 yards of total offense in the first game of the season, there’s a lot to be happy about.

I personally liked seeing so many young guys make their debuts for the Buckeyes against Bowling Green. Last year we only saw four true freshmen break into game action, and we’ve already seen 10 so far this year. Skill players like Joe Burrow and Demario McCall had good days – Burrow had his first collegiate TD pass, which happened to go to McCall. One of the most popular talking points last game was the selection of Michael Jordan on offensive line. He’s the first true freshman to start on the line since Orlando Pace did it in 1993. Jordan’s no Orlando Pace, but he surely held his own on Saturday despite a few penalties. We also saw Nick Bosa rack up his first career sack (the first of many, I’m sure), and Rodjay Burns take one to the house on a pick-six late in the 4th quarter.

This team is very young with only six seniors on scholarship, but after what we witnessed last week, the future at Ohio State is bright with all the talent that Urban and Co. is bringing in on a year-to-year basis.

Players of the Game –

Curtis Samuel – I know J.T. Barrett won Big Ten Player of the Week, but without Samuel, he probably wouldn’t have. Samuel provided that true H-back Urban has been looking for since he got here. Eighty-four yards rushing on 13 carries, 177 yards on nine receptions, and three touchdowns probably would’ve won Samuel the award any other week.

Malik Hooker – I mean, he put on an interception clinic on Saturday. The first one was simply amazing. The fact he was able to cover so much ground to get to the ball, jump up as high as he did, tip the ball, and then concentrate enough to come down with it was simply spectacular. On his second interception, I thought the Bowling Green receiver had it, but then I see Hooker running away with the ball. He again ran across the field to make the play and stole the ball right out of the hands of the receiver. It’ll be fun to watch him prowl around the secondary all season, that’s for sure.

On Tulsa –

Tulsa comes to us from the American Athletic Conference, which is the home to some quality football programs like Houston, Cincinnati, and ECU. They defeated San Jose State last week 45-10 and racked up 512 yards of offense in doing so. They have experienced leaders on offense in senior quarterback Dane Evans and junior running back D’Angelo Brewer. Considering they ran the ball 58 times against San Jose State, I expect they’ll try it again against the Buckeyes. Unlike San Jose State, though, Ohio State will be ready to plug the gaps. Tulsa held the Spartans to 287 yards of offense and only 10 points last week, but I think the Buckeyes will at least double those numbers with their arsenal of speed and weaponry.

What am I looking for out of this game? I want the Buckeyes to come in focused on the task at hand and not looking ahead to Oklahoma next weekend. If they do that, they should win this game pretty easily. I hope to see a more dominate offensive line that can open additional holes for Mike Weber, Curtis Samuel, and the other backs. Watching Samuel and Dontre Wilson catch balls is nice, but I really want to see the other wide receivers step up. Guys like Noah Brown and KJ Hill, even Austin Mack and Parris Campbell, both of whom were held without a catch last week, should get more involved this week.

On defense, I’m hoping to see more of the same. We kept big plays in check against Bowling Green, and we need to contain Tulsa in a similar manner. We didn’t hear much about the linebackers on the television broadcast last week, but that’s because the defensive line was doing a great job plugging the holes and limiting Bowling Green’s running game to 2.5 yards per carry. The secondary will continue to gel around Gareon Conley and Malik Hooker, with Marshon Lattimore and Damon Webb continuing to grow in their roles. The loss of Tracy Sprinkle for the year certainly hurts as far as depth goes, but the show must go on. I’m looking for Davon Hamilton and Dre’mont Jones to come out of their shells and shore up that defensive tackle spot.

Overall, I don’t think we’ll see the same offensive output as last week, but I still expect us to have a decent showing. My prediction: Ohio State 59, Tulsa 13.

Musings –

Like most of America, I watched a lot of college football over the weekend, and I’ve come to the conclusion that preseason polls need to go away. Yes, I understand they generate discussion and make the offseason a little more bearable, but after what I saw last weekend, preseason polls – as always – mean squat. LSU was a preseason top-five team and looked pretty terrible against Wisconsin. Tennessee was ranked 9th and needed overtime to take down Michigan-slayer Appalachian State. Oklahoma was preseason #3 and lost to Houston in a game the Sooners never really had much of a chance to win. Texas held on against ninth-ranked Notre Dame, and FSU came from behind to take down #12 Ole Miss.

How about we hold the rankings until teams have played five weeks of football? By then, everyone will have played a cupcake or two, a tough non-conference opponent, and a few conference opponents. Then we can really see who’s who. I know I shouldn’t get so riled up about these polls since the only one that matters is the one the College Playoff Committee puts out at the end of the year, but I can’t help it.

The polls are just too subjective. Let’s take for instance Jon Wilner, who’s an AP poll voter for the San Jose Mercury News. His preseason #1 pick was Ohio State, but after one week, he dropped them to the 9th spot. His reasoning –

“You’ll note that the top-eight teams on the ballot all played marquee opponents, not cupcakes. The rankings are based on my view of the quality of the individual win — Alabama over USC being the best, followed closely by Texas over Notre Dame.”

I’m sorry Jon, but that’s not how it’s done. You rank teams based on their overall performance, not just the “quality” of a single win. You ranked Ohio State preseason #1 with the knowledge that it opened with Bowling Green and Tulsa. You knew the Buckeyes would probably blow both teams out of the water, but you put them #1 anyway. Then, after a great weekend of college football, the Buckeyes’ 67-point win over Bowling Green wasn’t as impressive as Texas’ three-point win against Notre Dame? Sure, Texas was probably under-rated going into the season, but catapulting them from unranked to #2 in the country based on a double-overtime win against the #10 team seems a bit farfetched. Yes, it was a good win, but seriously, #2? If we follow Jon’s reasoning, Ohio State is only two ticks better than TCU, who struggled until late with FCS foe South Dakota State.

Let me end on this: I enjoy the preseason hype as much as the next person, and discussing college football year-round makes me happy. But when I have to read and listen to 15 voters put out 15 different top-25 rankings based on their personal logic, then all credibility for the voting system goes out the window. I’d rather the voters wait five weeks, see teams in action against a variety of opponents, and then make a logical Top 25. Sure, I put together my top four at the end of this column, but I don’t get paid to look like a fool. I do that for free.

A Fan’s Week 1 Playoff Predictions –

Alabama – A dominate performance on a big stage against a ranked opponent with a freshman quarterback. Not much more you could ask for, in my opinion, but Nick Saban will demand more from his team as they prepare to enter the SEC gauntlet later this year.

Houston – I called it last week when I said they would beat Oklahoma, but I didn’t see it being so easy. They shut down Baker Mayfield and provided the Buckeyes with a great scouting report on how to win. I expect old friends Tom Herman and Urban Meyer to discuss what went down as Ohio State gets ready to make the trip to Norman.

Clemson – Until they lose, I still think they belong here. Yes, they struggled against Auburn, but it was a road game in a hostile environment. We saw what the Deshaun Watson-to-Mike Williams combo is capable of, and I expect them to be a dynamic duo the rest of the season. Again, the battle with FSU looms large, as the winner of that game will most likely be playoff bound.

Ohio State – Yep, I’m biased, but the way the Buckeyes played on Saturday made them look like a playoff contender right out of the gate. The offense got rolling after the early pick-six, and the defense shut down the likely MAC champions. We’ll see what these young Bucks are made of in two weeks in Norman.

A Fan’s Week 1 Heisman Standings –

Christian McCaffrey – If you didn’t see the punt return that wasn’t, look it up. We might’ve seen a Heisman moment in the first game of the season if not for a weak block-in-the-back call that reversed it. Add 22 carries for 126 yards and two TDs (not counting the infamous punt return touchdown) and seven receptions for 40 yards to Mr. Does-It-All’s resume. Right now he holds the top spot for me.

J.T. Barrett – A six passing, one rushing touchdown performance in the first game of the season vaults Barrett up a spot in my rankings. He bounced back from an early pick-six to settle into a rhythm. Although he favored Curtis Samuel quite a bit, he completed receptions to eight other receivers, and he looked good running the read-option as well.

Nick Chubb – Boy, did he return from a season-ending injury in a big way! In a game against a tough North Carolina opponent, Chubb put up 222 yards on 32 carries and two touchdowns in Georgia’s come-from-behind victory on Saturday. Chubb didn’t look rusty at all as he ran through the Tar Heel defense.

Deshaun Watson – Yes, he didn’t look great against Auburn. He didn’t throw or run the ball particularly well, and he has high expectations on his shoulders this year since he’s leading a team that lost very few offensive pieces. He’ll continue to get better throughout the season, and I fully expect him to end up at the trophy presentation at the end of the year.

Brandon’s look through Woody’s eye’s . . ,

“Holy crap! Week one of the college football season was absolutely amazing. From watching our Buckeyes dominate Bowling Green to Texas beating Notre Dame and all the SEC losses in-between, the “greatest opening weekend” definitely lived up to its billing! Unfortunately for us, as great as the first week was…the second week is that bad. It’s really a toss-up what is the most important game this weekend? Let’s take a look:”

“While the Ohio State football team’s first game of the season may have gotten the most attention, the biggest Buckeye games of the weekend belonged to the OSU women’s soccer and volleyball teams.

After opening the season with four straight wins, the Ohio State women’s soccer team faced their toughest test yet of the season on Thursday when they traveled to Blacksburg to take on 16th ranked Virginia Tech.”
