A healthy Booker adds even more firepower to the OSU defense.

“Booker played on special teams on the 2014 national title team and got almost 100 snaps in 2015, but he is mostly an unknown to outsiders. But those inside the program believe Booker, a fourth-year junior, has all the qualities to emerge quickly as a star.”

Bill Rabinowitz on Dante Booker looking to rebound from injury | The Columbus Dispatch

As Ohio State football continues camp, linebacker Dante Booker is looking to continue getting back onto the gridiron after missing last season with an MCL tear. In an article by Bill Rabinowitz of The Columbus Dispatch, Booker talked about how it was the end of last season that he felt healthy enough to play, however, with the way Jerome Baker was tearing up the linebacker role, it didn’t make sense for Booker to utilize his eligibility.

Last season, Baker returned an interception for a touchdown against Oklahoma, and picked up 13 tackles versus Wisconsin. Combined with a healthy Booker, who had experience on the 2014 national champion team, the linebacking corp looks ready to put on a tour de force performance in 2017. Especially with Booker, who said there was an “even greater fire” in getting back on the field, expect great things to come from the fourth-year junior.

In his career at OSU, Booker has played in 23 games and started in one—the Bowling Green game he was injured in, and has accumulated 31 tackles.

“There have been many peaks during his tenure, but Meyer's success since heading to Columbus has been incredible. Though he was criticized early on for playing in a "down" conference and scheduling weak out-of-conference opponents, he scoffed at the notion.”

Brad Shepard on the greatest college football teams since the start of 2000 | Bleacher Report

With the football season just weeks away, Brad Shepard of Bleacher Report broke down a list of the best college football programs since the start of the new millennium. To no surprise, the Buckeyes showed up on the list—but not at No. 1.

Through the work of Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer over the course of the last 16 seasons, OSU ended up as No. 2 on the list of best programs since 2000. OSU has gone 181-39 with four different coaches at the helm. In that time span, the Buckeyes have gone to 3 BCS national championship games, 2 College Football Playoffs, and won 2 national titles. Throw in the handful of Fiesta Bowls and other top bowl games, and the Buckeyes’ success has been one of the constants in the ever changing football world.

For those wondering, Ohio State was the only team from the Big Ten to crack the list. The Buckeyes are sandwiched between SEC foes—and foes that they’ve faced in big games. LSU ranked No. 3 on the list, and Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide was the No. 1 team on the list.

“The Buckeyes host...Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. Saturday in Columbus...The Buckeyes, led by 21st-year head coach Lori Walker-Hock, return 16 letterwinners and five starts off a 2016 team that finished with an 11-7-3 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, marking Ohio State’s seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in the last eight seasons.”

Ohio State women’s soccer continues on their exhibition schedule | Ohio State athletics

We’ve been highlighting football, but with school coming back to session, there are a slew of other OSU sports that are starting up, too. Tomorrow, the women’s soccer team kicks off another exhibition contest; this time it’s at 5 p.m. against Pittsburgh.

The last time the Buckeyes-Panthers played was back on Aug. 28, 2013 in Columbus. In that regular-season match, the Buckeyes walked away with a 2-0 win behind goals from Kayla Varner and Alexis Degler, and improved to 3-0 on the season.

All of OSU’s exhibition and regular-season contests at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium are free of charge. So if you can’t catch the Pitt match on Saturday, there are 11 regular-season games to see the Scarlet and Gray.

NFL (2017 Season)

A place to discuss various happenings around the NFL.

Kicking off with some trades today...

The Bills dealt perpetually hobbled WR Sammy Watkins and a 6th rounder to the Rams for CB E.J. Gaines and a 2nd rounder. They then turned around and acquired WR Jordan Matthews and a 3rd rounder from the Iggles for CB Ronald Darby

Interestingly, Matthews, a 2nd round (2014) pick has topped Watkins, the 4th overall pick that year, in every category.

The NFL has finally finished their investigation and have made a decision about the former Ohio State running back.

Former Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott has been in the news a lot over the past few months, but it really all began just after he was drafted in 2016 at No. 4 overall to the Dallas Cowboys. After over a year of investigating the initial alleged domestic violence incident, the NFL has finally handed down their punishment, a 6-game suspension.

Charges were never filed against Elliott following the alleged assault in July 2016, with the Columbus City Attorney’s Office citing conflicting and inconsistent evidence. The prosecutor’s office would only say there wasn’t enough evidence for a conviction, not that Elliott committed no wrongdoing.

The July incident marked the second time the same woman called police against the running back; the first being in Florida back in February 2016, as later reported by Sports Illustrated. Again, Elliott was never arrested due to lack of evidence and witnesses.

Elliott finished up his rookie season without facing any league punishment, but proceeded to make headlines. In March 2017, Elliott was recorded pulling down a woman’s top during a St. Patrick’s Day parade, and last month was allegedly involved in a bar fight with a bouncer at a Dallas club.

A long list of future and potential Buckeyes received more accolades on Thursday.

If you’re verbally committed to Ohio State, chances are you’re one of the top recruits on the high school level.

Besides shining on the field, most of the future Buckeyes have received off the field honors. From the look of things, that won’t be changing anytime soon. On Thursday, five OSU pledges were named among the recruits to make the 2017 U.S.A. Today American Family Insurance All-USA preseason team.

Below are the group of Ohio State commits that made the cut.

  • 5-star DT Taron Vincent
  • 5-star DE Brenton Cox
  • 4-star LB Teradja Mitchell
  • 4-star LB Dallas Gant
  • 4-star S Jaiden Woodbey

The Buckeyes are sitting solid with 16 verbal pledges at this time, and the aforementioned prospects have already ended their recruitments, but a solid amount of recruits who are still on the market with OSU interest made the list too.

  • 5-star OT Jackson Carman
  • 5-star DE Micah Parsons
  • 5-star CB Anthony Cook
  • 5-star CB Tyson Campbell
  • 2019 5-star DE Zach Harrison
  • 2019 4-star WR David Bell

Can the Buckeyes add even more of the Family Insurance All-USA team to their 2018 class? I guess we’ll have to wait and see how everything pans out.

Jones sets commitment date

Ever since coming to Columbus, Chris Holtmann and his group of assistant coaches have hit the recruiting trail hard trying to add more talent to the Buckeye basketball roster.

Climbing up the top lists of many class of 2018 targets, one of Ohio State’s recent offerees will end his recruitment this weekend.

Announcing his college commitment between the Buckeyes, Duke, Minnesota, UCLA, and USC on Sunday, five-star point guard Tre Jones will make one coaching staff extremely happy.

I am blessed to be in this position. I appreciate all the schools that have recruited me. I will be making my college decision on Sunday.

— Tre Jones (@trejones03) August 10, 2017

While the Buckeyes are definitely on the hunt for lead guard depth, The Apple Valley High School (MN) standout probably won’t end up running the Buckeyes' offense.

Jones, the younger brother of former Duke standout and current Minnesota Timberwolves guard Tyus Jones, is considered the top point guard and ninth-overall prospect in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Many experts are pegging the Saint Paul native to follow in Tyus’ shoes and suit up for coaching legend Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils.

A true leader on the court, the 6'2, 170-pound Jones averaged over 20 points and seven assistants a contest last season as a junior to help pace Apple Valley to the Minnesota state playoffs.

Quick Hits

  • 247Sports released their rankings for the 2020 recruiting class on Thursday. A number of potential Buckeyes, including strong side defensive end and top-rated player Bryan Bresee (Damascus, MD/Damascus), find their name among some of the best in the sophomore class.
  • Five-star class of 2018 power forward Simisola Shittu (Saxtons River, VT/Vermont Academy) told D1Vision.com that Ohio State, Arizona, Arizona State, Kentucky, North Carolina, Notre Dame, and Vanderbilt are currently recruiting him the hardest at the moment. Planning on trimming his list down soon, the 6'8, 210-pounder had the following to say on the Buckeyes program: “There’s a lot of history to the school. It’s pretty close to home and they have a lot of pros.”

The next product of Ohio State’s #LBU will be sidelined his rookie season.

Former Ohio State star linebacker Raekwon McMillan was sidelined during his first NFL preseason game with a right knee injury after punt coverage. It’s being reported that he has torn his ACL and is expected to miss the remainder of his rookie season with the Miami Dolphins.

I can confirm the Dolphins believe rookie LB Raekwon McMillan tore his ACL, as @thewiwitos reported.

— Andy Slater (@AndySlater) August 11, 2017

McMillan was drafted at No. 54 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft and was expected to be a starter to begin his rookie season. After an impressive spring and an equally impressive training camp, he was primed to be a big contributor for the Dolphins’ defense. The linebacker is building off a three-year Ohio State career, one that included 275 total tackles (18.0 for loss), 6.0 sacks and a pick-6.

The Buckeye was a fan favorite on and off the field, and he’ll keep that reputation at the next level. Even though he won’t be able to contribute as expected on the field, he’ll still be a valuable asset to the Dolphins’ locker room.
