From Eli Apple having a career day, to Michael Thomas passing 1,000 receiving yards, it was a good week for Buckeyes in the NFL.

As the postseason inches closer, former Ohio State players continued to impress and outdo themselves in Week 15 of the NFL. Specifically, second-year players had a hell of a week, and made lots of headlines, for more than just their on-field performances.

Michael Thomas hit a new career milestone, Eli Apple and Jeff Heuerman claimed new career-high stats, Ezekiel Elliott is more than ready for his return from suspension, and more. Plus, Ryan Shazier made his first public appearance, since his injury, at the Steelers-Patriots game Sunday afternoon, and was welcomed with thunderous applause.

Here’s how Buckeyes in the NFL fared in Week 15:

Thomas reaches another career benchmark

Second-year wideout Michael Thomas has been an instant success for the New Orleans Saints, and continues to set new personal, franchise and league bests.

— NFL (@NFL) December 17, 2017

In Week 15, Thomas hauled in nine catches for 93 yards and a touchdown, good for his second 1,000-yard season. With two games still to play, the Buckeye receiver is well on his way to besting his 1,137-yard rookie season.

Bosa gets some tips from an NFL veteran

Following a Saturday night matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs, two of Ohio State coach Larry Johnson’s pupils met up, with the younger of the two, Joey Bosa, receiving some tips of the trade.

Tamba Hali of the Chiefs (and Penn State alum under Coach Johnson) took some time after the game to work on Bosa’s pass-rush technique. The Buckeye, in just his second year in the NFL, has 11.5 sacks so far in 2017 and claims 22 in his career. There aren’t many players out there who do things better than Bosa, but he was eager and all ears when a 12-year league vet took an interest in helping his game.

Apple active again for the Giants

After missing time to take care of his mom following brain surgery, Giants’ CB Eli Apple was then benched due to missed practices and a rumored attitude problem in the locker room. He was active in Week 15 for the first time in weeks, and had a career-high game finishing with seven solo tackles (nine total) against the Eagles.

It’s been a strange year, not just for the Buckeye CB, but for the New York Giants organization as a whole. From having one of the worst records in the NFL (2-12) to firing head coach Ben McAdoo a week after benching the longest tenured starter in franchise and league history, it’s been a bumpy road.

Following the Nov. 11 game against the 49ers, it was reported that Apple nearly walked out of the team facility after a position meeting that was particularly critical (read: honest) of the Buckeyes’ performance. Dealing with a struggling organization and a position group that has seen multiple conflicts, all in addition to the personal situation of caring for his mom, would be understandably overwhelming.

It wasn’t just his near walk-out that has kept Apple in the headlines. During last week’s NFC East matchup against the Cowboys — a game in which Apple was inactive — the Buckeye took to Twitter to show his former Ohio State teammate and now-Dallas rusher Rod Smith some love on a stellar performance.

Firing up more than just Giant fans, interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo remarked, “I told him I was disappointed. We’ll decide exactly what we do with it.”

Apple’s first performance back on the field should do enough to quell any questions people may have about his dedication and commitment to his craft — whether he’s all-in for the Giants is yet to be seen, but he’s at least making a case for a roster spot should the team make any changes in the offseason.

Elliott set to return next week

After finally serving his six-game suspension, Cowboys’ running back Ezekiel Elliott will be back in action for the team’s Week 16 game against the Seahawks. Following his suspension being upheld — and without additional options to appeal -- Elliott left the United State in an effort to refocus his energy and get away from the headlines.

(The move felt very Kayne West circa 2009 after the first Taylor Swift debacle. It worked for the rapper, who returned to a clean slate to build upon.)

It seems Elliott’s time away was well spent, with the running back looking to be in top shape ahead of his return. During the legal process, and the first half of the season, Elliott’s weight became a topic of discussion as the player known for rocking a crop top wasn’t leaving any gain to the imagination. In Ian Rapoport’s most recent update, you can see a picture of a shirt-less Zeke and some very chiseled abs.

#Cowboys RB Zeke Elliott returns from Cabo today after 6 weeks of intense training (pic included). A full-length documentary on his time away has been in the works, so you can see for yourself soon ... And that #Bengals coach Marvin Lewis update we promised, too. pic.twitter.com/uynGN4PGoB

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) December 17, 2017

Rapoport also noted that Zeke has been documenting his six weeks away from the league, and will release a full-length documentary about his journey.

Smith continues TD streak for the Cowboys

There is one guy who might not be so eager to see Zeke back at practice Monday morning, running back Rod Smith has seen a big increase in targets and carries in Elliott’s absence. This week in primetime against the Raiders, Smith claimed a short-yard trip to the endzone, marking his fourth game in a row with a rushing touchdown (for five total scores on the season).

Plays of the Week

Jeff Heuerman

The former Buckeye tight end had a career-high game coming off of just one catch on Thursday Night Football. Heuerman caught a big pass from Broncos (sometimes) QB Brock Osweiler for a 54-yard touchdown. It marked the longest catch and most yardage in a game in the TE’s two-year career, as well as only his second career TD.

Ryan Shazier

Before his back injury two weeks ago, Steelers’ LB Ryan Shazier was almost a weekly fixture among the Players of the Week, and even though he isn’t back on the field, he’s still making the list. With little news out of the Shazier camp since undergoing spine stabilization surgery last week, it was encouraging to see the Buckeye in a suite for the Steelers game. Even better, the incredible reaction from fans and teammates when they showed No. 50 on the big screen.

.@RyanShazier is here.

And this is what happened.#SHALIEVE pic.twitter.com/qnLvw7Foya

— Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) December 17, 2017

There still hasn’t been a definitive report as to the extent of his injury or recovery, or to the extent to which he can move his lower body, but attending a football game so soon after surgery is a good sign. Regardless of the prognosis, he seems to be in good spirits and surrounded by an excellent support system — from family, friends, and fans alike.

Other Notables

  • Despite finishing 2017 on IR, Colts OG Jack Mewhort will be looking for a new contract during the offseason. With his injury issues the past two years, a four-year or longer deal seems unlikely, but the Buckeye is being projected to land a 3-year deal with Indianapolis worth upward of $21 million.
  • It was a good week for some former Ohio State defenders, with several nearing career-high games, including Kurt Coleman (10 total tackles), Marshon Lattimore (5 total tackles) and Darron Lee (7 total tackles). Steelers’ DE Cameron Heyward also recorded a sack against Patriots’ QB Tom Brady in Week 15.

— Pro Football Focus (@PFF) December 17, 2017
  • Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins had a big game in a Week 15 win against the Giants with 9 total tackles and a blocked kick.

— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) December 17, 2017
  • Packers’ center Corey Linsley was snapping to a familiar face on Sunday, with Green Bay welcoming QB Aaron Rodgers back to the field after a broken collarbone sidelined him for a good portion of the season.
  • Despite nursing an injury, rookie Pat Elflein was still able to be a big contributor for the Vikings on Sunday in a win over the Bengals.

The Buckeyes are still trying to add pledges from a pair of standout pass rushers.

Every since the decommitment of five-star defensive end Brenton Cox, the Ohio State coaching staff has been on the recruiting trail trying secure pledges from outside pass rushers.

Hitting the road to watch a pair of big time targets play basketball, Urban Meyer and crew kicked off the weekend by watching four-star end Tyreke Smith and Cleveland Heights take the hardwood on Friday night.

24 hours after visiting with Smith, Urban Meyer, Larry Johnson, and Greg Schiano made the trek up to New Jersey to preach the Buckeye gospel to another four-star talent, Jayson Oweh.

Thank you @OSUCoachMeyer @OSUCoachSchiano and @R2X_Rushmen1 for coming to my game tonight. Enlightening talk!

— Jayson Oweh (@JaysonOweh) December 17, 2017

Smith was once thought of as a Penn State lean, but has many around the scene starting to believe that the Buckeyes are now in front for his services.

While Smith’s recruitment might be starting to lean in favor of OSU, Oweh still has scouts and reporters thinking there is a very good shot that he’ll end up in Happy Valley when it's all said and done.

Both Smith and Oweh will wait until after the early signing period to announce their college plans. Following in the footsteps of a long list of standout recruits, the pair will shut down their recruitment at the Under Armour All-American game on January 4, 2018.

Needing help on the edge, will the Buckeyes keep these talented defensive ends away from Penn State and others? We only have a few weeks left until we find out. Stick with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest.

Underclassmen check out OSU

While Urban Meyer, Larry Johnson, and others are still working their tail off to make sure the Ohio State class of 2018 finishes off strong, the Buckeyes are still keeping an eye out for top tier underclassmen.

Having the opportunity to show recruits around the Ohio State campus before the quiet period went into effect, the Buckeye staff played host to numerous prospects from the 2019 and 2020 classes.

Want to know who visited? Land-Grant Holy Land has your back. Here are just a few of the recruits who made it to Columbus over the weekend.

Baldwin, Lake Travis to play for title

Recent Ohio State quarterback pledge Matthew Baldwin and his Lake Travis teammates will have a chance to win a Texas state championship after running away to a 28-14 win over previously-unbeaten Katy High on Saturday.

In the big win, Baldwin, a three-star prospect, connected on 22 of his 30 passing attempts for 225 yards through the air.

It wasn’t all smiles for Baldwin. Leading his squad down the field, the signal caller went down awkwardly after a quarterback keeper and left the ball game in the fourth quarter with a reported meniscus injury.

While it was definitely a scary situation, all signs point towards Baldwin suiting up for the Cavaliers and playing next week.

Trying to win the state championship for the second straight season, Lake Travis will take on class of 2019 Ohio State quarterback target Grant Tisdale and Allen High next Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

For the first time in NCAA history, college football recruits will have a chance to sign their LOIs in late-December.

The NCAA changed some rules earlier in 2017, one result was an early signing period for college football recruits. Now, incoming players have a three-day window between Dec. 20-22 to sign their National Letters of Intent to the program of their choice, ahead of the traditional National Signing Day on the first Wednesday in February.

Programs are expecting up to 80% of their incoming freshman class to sign their LOIs during the early signing period, officially ending their recruitment and building an early picture of what teams will look like next fall.

How does the early signing period work?

The new three-day window will be similar to National Signing Day. Prospects will sign their National Letters of Intent and will fax them in to Ohio State, who will then announce them throughout the day. (I still can’t get over that in 2017, we’re still using fax machines to send LOIs, but here we are.)

How does the early signing period affect recruiting

Losing over a month of recruiting time hurries things up for the Buckeye coaching staff, who, in addition to the early signing period, are also focused on preparing for the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 29.

Immediately following Ohio State’s Big Ten Championship win, the coaching staff hit the recruiting trail, planting flags in Georgia, Florida, and up and down the East Coast. Urban Meyer met with four-star DT Tommy Togiai who would end up committing with less than a week before being able to sign his papers.

Fortunately, unlike several other programs (cc: Tennessee and Florida State), Ohio State hasn’t had to worry about filling coaching spots while also trying to formalize a 2018 recruiting class. The instability among some of the top FBS programs gives the Buckeyes an extra advantage with some players still on the fence.

Who does Ohio State expect to sign early?

The Buckeyes are expecting about 17 players to sign their National Letters of Intent during the three-day early signing period, including recent commits like Kamryn Babb and Tommy Togiai. Ohio State is still expecting to receive a signed LOI from QB Emory Jones, who has been taking high-profile visits to other programs (most notably to Alabama and this past weekend to the University of Florida) after making his verbal commitment to the Buckeyes in 2016.

The group of expected early signers is deep at the defensive tackle position (3) and at linebacker (2), plus two additions to the offensive line. There’s also a smattering of skill positions that’ll be filled with the incoming freshmen, including one or two players with the potential to be the next true-freshman phenom for the Buckeyes.

Are any Ohio State targets waiting for National Signing Day?

Yes. There are a few players who are expected to wait another month and a half before making their official decision. Still expected to land with Ohio State, legacy CB Marcus Hooker (Malik Hooker’s brother) and RB Brian Snead are expected to wait to put pen to paper in early-February.

There are many reasons why a player might wait another month before signing their LOIs, from wanting to take a few extra visits to trying to see how they might fit into the incoming class once the rosters are more complete. Jaiden Woodbey, for example, while once a heavy Ohio State lean, could wind up flipping by the time National Signing Day comes around.

How can you keep up with Ohio State’s latest 2018 pledges?

Land-Grant Holy Land will have profiles on everyone who signs during the three-day period, all conveniently located in one place.

The Big Ten Network will also be covering the early signing period, beginning Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 9 a.m. ET.

usa_today_10294349.0.jpg

The year is 1987, and for the first time in Cotton Bowl history, a Big Ten team took the field. It also marked the culmination of the first season in the collegiate coaching ranks for a young graduate assistant named Urban Meyer.

He showed up on Ohio State’s campus with a mustache and a mission. The goal? To land his first collegiate coaching job as a graduate assistant coaching defensive backs. First, he’d need to impress Ohio State head coach Earle Bruce.

As Urban Meyer sat waiting to interview for the job, something unexpected happened. Recalling the moment years later, Meyer was approached by then graduate assistant Tim Hinton who told him to forget about the defensive side of the ball. Hinton's advice: go over to the offense and coach the tight ends. Rather than pouring coffee as the defensive backs coach, the role with the tight ends would actually get a shot at some real coaching.

Minutes later in Bruce’s office — Earle asked the aspiring graduate assistant what role he wanted to coach. Taking Hinton’s advice, Meyer rolled the dice and answered 'tight ends,' even though he had no real experience with that unit.

As Bruce readied to press Meyer on the X’s and O’s of his coaching philosophy with the tight ends, Meyer could feel the sweat begin to bead up in his brow. Then an intervention came. Bruce’s secretary interrupted the interview with news — a major recruit was swinging through campus unexpectedly. All of a sudden Bruce had bigger fish to fry — and coach looked at Meyer and said, “You’ll be fine.”

Bruce was right. And the 1986 season was a fine one for the Buckeyes, too. They would finish the regular season as co-Big Ten champs and a 9-3 record, and ranked No. 11 in the country. Their prize, for the first time in school history — for the first time in Big Ten history — was a trip to the Cotton Bowl.

The Cotton Bowl at that time pitted the champion of the Southwest conference against the SEC or another major foe. This time, the Cotton came calling for Bruce, Meyer, and the Buckeyes — to take on the No. 8 ranked Texas A&M Aggies, the back-to-back Southwest Conference champions. The Aggies were also looking for back-to-back Cotton Bowl wins after dominating Auburn 36-16 in the 1986 game. A repeat in the Cotton would be a rare feat. The 1987 contest would mark the 51st Cotton Bowl, and only Texas (in 1969 and 1970) had ever won two consecutive Cotton Bowl Classics.

On game day, wide receiver Chris Carter and running back Vince Workman powered the OSU offense. But it would ultimately be Chris Spielman and Michael Kee’s pick-sixes of Aggie quarterback Sonny Gordon that would open up the game, and eventually put it out of reach. Ohio State would win by a final score of 28-12, powered by five defensive interceptions.

The Buckeyes finished the season ranked No. 6 in the country. But after a 6-4-1 record the following season in 1987, OSU would fire coach Earle Bruce. Meyer would leave to become a linebacker coach at Illinois State.

When the Buckeyes clash with the Trojans, they will return to the bowl game that marked Meyer’s biggest win in his young coaching career. For the Big Ten, they’ve become used to sending teams to Arlington; the last three Cotton Bowls have featured Big Ten programs.

Now, Meyer and the Buckeyes are back—and aim to claim another Cotton Bowl Classic for the trophy case.

For the first time in college football history, incoming freshman can sign their National Letter of Intent in late-December.

This year marks the first time that the NCAA has given college football prospects an opportunity to sign their National Letters of Intent during an early signing period. From Dec. 20-22, Ohio State (and the other 129 FBS programs) are expecting to add up to 80% of their incoming 2018 class, with the remaining few scholarship spots to be claimed on the traditional National Signing Day in early-February.

The Buckeyes are expecting about 17 LOIs to be faxed to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center during this early signing period. Players firm in their commitments aren’t waiting any longer to make their pledge official, and can now shift their focus toward their collegiate careers and leaving their recruitment in the past.

Urban Meyer and the coaching staff took to the recruiting trail immediately following the Big Ten Championship, using their conference title and Cotton Bowl bid as a last testament to the strength of the program. Despite falling short of a College Football Playoff bid, the Buckeyes finished with only two losses on the season and are looking toward another impressive haul in the NFL Draft.

Stay tuned for updates as the Buckeyes get BOOOOOM-ing during the early signing period, and lockdown some of the top talents from the 2018 recruiting class.
