The Buckeyes add another play making receiver to their talented class of 2018.

It was only a matter of time.

Urban Meyer and crew have brought the spatula out once again. Similar to other years, the Buckeyes coaching staff have successfully flipped themselves a talented prospect out of his verbal pledge to another program and into calling Columbus his future stomping grounds.

Just like his Christian Brothers High School (MO) teammate and fellow four-star rated wide receiver Kamryn Babb did earlier today, Cameron Brown, a longtime Nebraska pledge, has announced his intentions to suit up for the Ohio State University next fall by signing his National Letter of Intent with the Buckeyes during the early signing period on Wednesday.

The 6’1, 175-pound Brown will add another quick, soft-handed pass catcher to Ohio State’s arsenal of playmakers at wide receiver.

Playing for the state champion Cadets, Brown, the 59th wide receiver, and 340th overall prospect in the class of 2018, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, hauled in 58 receptions for 931 yards and 13 touchdowns even though he missed most of the postseason with an injury.

Giving Ohio State his word just weeks after officially visiting the Ohio State University campus, Brown now has Ohio State currently sitting at 22 commitments going into the new year.

Scouting Report

Brown can fly down the field to get the football. If you’re a defensive back, you have to keep your eyes on him, or you risk giving up a big pass play down the field. On top of that, Brown will go after and attack the ball. This past season, Brown’s high school, Christian Brothers College, brought home a state title. Now at Ohio State, don’t be too surprised if he helps bring home hardware to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

While he may not be Antonio Brown, Cameron Brown is electric as an offensive threat. (Who knows, maybe he’ll become OSU’s version of the Steelers’ wide out).

It sure looks like it.

Entering the first day of the Early Signing Period, the Ohio State Buckeyes were seen as a main contender for Ohio’s top prospect, offensive tackle Jackson Carman. There was also stiff competition from USC for the five-star from Fairfield, too.

However, as Carman made his announcement at around 11:30 a.m. ET, it was neither the Buckeyes nor Trojans who would get the OT. It was the defending national champions, the Clemson Tigers, who got Ohio’s best prospect.

But how did they do it? Well, it looks like the recruiting spin was of a negative variety toward Ohio State.

Dabo Swinney told Jackson Carman during his recruitment that Urban Meyer is on the back end of his career in terms of years left. “It wasn’t a major factor, but it was an underlying one,” Carman said.

— Ari Wasserman (@AriWasserman) December 20, 2017

It’s no surprise that negative recruiting occurs. Especially when it looks like a coach may be on his way out, or if a school is under the watchful eye of the NCAA, expect other programs to pile on and do what it takes to convince a prospect to look at their school.

The shocking thing here is how quickly it was divulged that negative recruiting occurred. Carman had just made it known that he’s going to Clemson, and then told the media what was said by Dabo Swinney during the recruitment process.

Recruiting is a wild ride, and these types of things do happen, but Swinney’s approach is weird. He beat the Buckeyes last season, but, according to the tweet by Ari Wasserman, still resorted to telling Carman that Urban Meyer was on the back end of his career. If that’s what it took to get Carman, instead of just showing him the Fiesta Bowl film from last season, that’s an, uh, interesting thing to do.

What do you think about negative recruiting? Sound off in the comments.

Once a centerpiece of the 2018 class, the blue chip QB will be playing somewhere else.

Once thought to be one of the centerpieces of Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class, Emory Jones will officially be signing elsewhere.

After taking visits to Florida and Florida State recently, Jones made it official, signing paperwork to join the Florida class of 2018.

— Brad Crawford (@BCrawford247) December 20, 2017

The high four-star QB would have been one of the highest rated QB recruits in recent Ohio State memory, and had offers and interest from virtually every other major program, from Alabama to Auburn, Clemson and more.

The Buckeyes won’t be without a quarterback in this cycle, as they recently flipped three-star Matthew Baldwin from Colorado State. But, this does mean that another elite option will not be joining what is already a pretty crowded quarterback room at Ohio State.

Even with the possibility of other late flips away from the Buckeyes, Ohio State is poised to sign yet another elite recruiting class, one that could finish as high as No. 1 in the country, depending on how things break elsewhere.

The Buckeye offensive line just missed out on a huge in-state 2018 prospect.

Ohio State started off the morning on the receiving end of 20 signed National Letters of Intent, but there was one guy they missed out on. In-state prospect, five-star offensive tackle Jackson Carman announced his decision to attend Clemson over Ohio State.

Jackson Carman: “As of today, I will be a Clemson Tiger.” pic.twitter.com/snQHbNkDLV

— Marcus Hartman (@marcushartman) December 20, 2017

The 6’6, 330-pound OT out of Fairfield, Ohio is the No. 1 player in the state and the No. 1 player at his position in the 2018 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s also ranked as the ninth best player in the country at any position.

This is huge blow to the Buckeyes, especially from an in-state guy. Although, early quotes from the prospect made it seem like he didn’t like being called a “lock” to suit up in Scarlet and Gray. (You don’t know me.)

It’s no wonder the highly-coveted prospect held offers from 41 programs throughout the FBS, but the tackle only took five official visits. Among the top possible landing spots for Carman, were Ohio State, Clemson and South Carolina.

Despite missing out on one of the best incoming 2018 players, the Buckeyes still landed 6’6, 289-pound OT Max Wray out of Middle Tennessee.

Scouting Report

It’s not surprising that the nation’s No. 1 offensive tackle is one of few high school players to already possess D1 size. Carman utilized every bit of his 6’6, 330-pound frame in both the run and pass game — and he also has a mean streak. It seemed hard for most defensive ends to even get around Carman in time to get to the quarterback, let alone defeat his block and get pressure.

Carman had a fantastic tendency of finishing the play on top of his man, but it’s his ridiculous athleticism for a man his size that should routinely produce impact blocks via pulls and traps in QB-run schemes.

It’s been a busy morning for the Buckeyes, who received 18 signed Letters of Intent before 10 a.m. ET.

Ohio State has been BOOOOM-ing this morning.

With the NCAA allowing an Early Signing Period for incoming college football players, the Buckeyes have almost completely filled their 2018 class. When Urban Meyer took to the podium to talk to the media this morning, Ohio State had already received 18 signed National Letters of Intent from players across the country.

The first two players to send in their LOIs were four-star LB Terajada Mitchell and the No. 1 DT in the country, five-star Taron Vincent. The fax machine I’m guessing then exploded, because players were sending in their commitments at record speed.

Here’s what Meyer had to say about the incoming 2018 class, as well as what the team expects over the next two days of the Early Signing Period.

Overall thoughts on the 2018 class

  • He opened by thanking the staff for the urgency they showed the past two weeks. Normally, Meyer keeps things all about the players, but the staff went above and beyond while still trying to prepare for the rivalry game and Big Ten Championship.
  • Meyer said he can’t remember a December like this one in forever. It’s been two weeks of intense travel and in-home visits.
  • The head coach said his process for recruiting changed a lot when his daughter was going through recruitment a few years ago. He learned that it isn’t just about what’s happening with the program, but how they will grow academically and as people.
  • Originally, Meyer was “dead set against” the Early Signing Period, but after seeing the results from this morning, it’s hard to argue that it won’t be beneficial.
  • One of Meyer’s biggest concerns is that the NFL entry deadline is on Jan. 15, so as far as scholarship spots available, the coaching staff isn’t sure yet how many they’ll have. When he’s mentioned that to some of the recruits, at least one told the head coach that another program would pull their offer if he didn’t sign during the Early Signing Period, putting the player and Ohio State in a tough spot.
  • Meyer retorted, “It’s hard to fill a roster when you don’t know who is leaving.” Which is fair.
Overall thoughts on the 2018 class

  • The first thing that he spoke about from the 2018 class was extending a special thanks to the families of the players, noting, “It’s a heck of a group.”
  • Meyer was surprised with how many LOIs the team received this morning, “We did very well, I can’t imagine we would have this number early sign.”
  • The head coach talked QB Matthew Baldwin, and Meyer said from the film, he saw a “dominant performance by a senior.” Meyer also said he respects Baldwin’s decision to stay and play at Lake Travis, a high school that typically sees kids leave for more exposure.
  • Meyer added that Baldwin will be the only QB in the class, meaning that previous commit, Emory Jones, will not be signing with the Buckeyes.
  • One of the latest recruits out of New York, has Meyer excited, “Jeremy Ruckert might be the best tight end I’ve ever seen.”
  • Ohio State nabbed two big-name recruits from Middle Tennessee, Max Wray and Master Teague. Meyer on Wray, said, “We needed tackles,” and on Teague, “He’s big. he’s fast, one of the greatest kids you’ll ever meet, great student, great family”
  • When asked how many spots that OSU would look to fill on the traditional February signing day, and he reiterated that he just didn’t know, because until the NFL entries are complete, he won’t know his final roster number.
Getting players from Ohio

  • Meyer admitted that the coaching staff is a little less worried about losing kids from the state of Ohio once they commit to the Buckeyes, but not by much.
  • He also spoke about how he was expecting the Early Signing Period to really only be tailored to guys like Jaelen Gill who are local prospects and Buckeyes for Life. Fortunately, that doesn’t appear to be the case with LOIs coming in from around the country.
  • Ohio State has had some issue recruiting kids out of the state, including academic issues with a few.
  • Meyer was asked about Jackson Carman out of Fairfield, Ohio and the possibility of losing him to another program, but the Ohio State head coach wasn’t able to discuss.
Other notes

  • Meyer was asked about Larry Johnson’s tweet about staying with the Buckeye coaching staff, and Urban said that he wasn’t aware of the social media drama until the assistant coach told him that he was going to address it. Meyer added that Johnson had a spot on his coaching staff for many years to come.
  • The head coach also lauded his coaching staff as, “the best group of young coaches we’ve had.”
  • That list of coaches includes quarterback coach Ryan Day, who Meyer noted had an opportunity to be a head coach in the SEC, but instead chose to stay and coach at Ohio State.
  • On the self-imposed recruiting violation, “we don’t have many of those here.” He expanded, “I get extremely upset when I see something was done incorrectly, even if it sounds minor, its not minor...everyone in our program should know the rules”

The pipeline from New York to Columbus keeps getting stronger; this time with an offensive lineman.

The Empire State pipeline for Ohio State once again comes through, as four-star Matthew Jones has now officially signed with Ohio State.

Jones is the No. 2 highest ranked recruit in the state of New York, — only behind fellow Buckeye, tight end Jeremy Ruckert -- and hails from Eramus Hall in Brooklyn, the same school that gave the Buckeyes Curtis Samuel and Jahsen Wint.

Originally rated as one of the elite defensive tackle prospects in the country, Jones is now rated at the top center prospect nationally, and that’s where Ohio State intends to play him. The 247 Sports Composite lists the 6-4, 300-pound Jones as the 55th best prospect in the country, regardless of position. He picked the Buckeyes over major powers like Clemson, Alabama, Oregon, Michigan and others.

Here’s a look at what exactly he brings to the table.

Scouting Report

Jones is unique, because he’s one of those rare players that could excel playing a number of positions at a school like Ohio State. He plays on both sides of the line for his high school, Erasmus Hall, and truly has the talent to play offense or defense at the next level. While Larry Johnson and Greg Schiano would certainly love to have him at defensive tackle, he’ll likely start his career in Columbus at offensive guard or center, because of the depth Ohio State currently has on the defensive line.

Jones spends most of his time at tackle right now, but has the perfect size and athleticism to move inside to guard or center. True centers are few and far between coming out of high school, so finding a player with the size of Jones (6-foot-4, 315) and the mobility needed to play center is a big deal for any school.

When it comes to his on the field play, Jones is one of the most refined offensive lineman in the entire 2018 class. He uses his legs extremely well, and often over powers defenders with his strength. If there’s anything Jones needs to work on, it’s his pass protection, as Erasmus prefers to run the ball, but that’s pretty common with high school lineman. He’s not bad in pass protection, he’ll just need to work on reading the defense and leverage related things. That’s what Greg Studrawa is for, and that’s something they’ll spend a ton of time working on.

Barring any injuries, Jones shouldn’t have to start as a true freshman, and that time to grow and learn the system will be extremely valuable to his development. Once Jones does see the field at Ohio State, he should be ready to go, be it at guard, or center.

The former Auburn lineman is officially a Buckeye.

What a long strange trip it’s been for four-star defensive tackle Antwuan Jackson.

A U.S. Army All-American in 2016, Jackson decided to enroll at Auburn over scholarship offers from Ohio State, Florida, and Georgia. Fast forward nearly two years, and the 6’3 305-pounder will don the Scarlet and Gray on the college level after signing his national letter of intent with the Big Ten powerhouse.

After being blocked to transfer to Ohio State and others when he decided to leave Auburn after redshirting his true freshman season, Jackson found his own way to end up in Columbus.

It’s been a long journey but you’re finally a Buckeye! Welcome to the Rushmen, @Hercules__52!#GoBucks #Supreme18 #NSD18 pic.twitter.com/qV7nSvBQsF

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) December 20, 2017

Deciding to take his talents to the junior college ranks at Blinn Community College (TX) to bounce back to the Division I level, the Buckeyes didn’t wait long to offer him a full ride scholarship, which was too much for Jackson to turn down, committing to OSU just weeks later.

One of the top overall recruits on the JUCO market, Jackson is considered the second defensive tackle, and third overall prospect on that level, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Showing why some of the top programs in the country were after him, Jackson snatched up 70 total tackles, and nine quarterback sacks in his only year with the Blinn Buccaneers, and was named the most valuable player of the Southwest Junior College Football Conference for his play on the field.

Arriving in Columbus next season with three years of eligibility left, Jackson has a chance to crack Larry Johnson’s rotation along the defensive front in 2018. Although the Buckeyes are expected to return letterwinners such as Dre’Mont Jones, Robert Landers, Jashon Cornell, Davon Hamilton, and others, expect Antwuan and his pass rushing specialties to be pretty hard to keep out of games very early on during his career with Ohio State.

Scouting Report

After missing out on Jackson in 2015 when he committed to Auburn over the Buckeyes, Urban Meyer finally got his man. Standing at 6’2, 305 pounds, he’s got a little more size on him than the other two members of the highly-touted defensive tackles, but it also helps that he has two years of collegiate weight room experience under his belt.

Jackson’s quick first-step stands out on tape, which is something that Larry Johnson will most certainly utilize on the interior. He’s an extremely disruptive three-technique who will most likely find his way into a rotation during the 2018 season. The likely return of Dre’Mont Jones (if we trust Nick Bosa) puts another body in front of Jackson, but his collegiate experience gives him a leg up on both Taron Vincent and Tommy Togiai.

Idaho’s top DT is officially a Buckeye!

After committing to the Buckeyes somewhat out of nowhere on December 12, the Idaho native Tommy Togiai is now officially an Ohio State Buckeye.

The country’s ninth best defensive tackle according to 247Sports brings incredible depth to the defensive line haul for the Buckeyes in 2018. As one of the three elite defensive tackles to become Buckeyes, Tommy gives Ohio State their first Idaho pledge and a serious pat on the back for going into enemy territory and holding off schools such as USC, Washington, and Utah who were all serious threats to land the four-star.

At 6-foot-3, 290 pounds, Togiai brings a veteran-style body that will only continue to improve once he gets to Columbus under the tutelage of Micky Marotti and the rest of the strength and conditioning staff. With his incredible abilities, Larry Johnson has to be excited about what is heading to campus with the rest of the 2018 haul. Having put in serious work to land Togiai, the signature itself makes all of the hours more than worth it.

A 2018 U.S. Army All-American, Tommy will be able to showcase why he is a top 130 player in the country and just how fortunate the Buckeyes are for signing this elite prospect to help bolster the defensive line and continue the trend of unstoppable rush-men. The thought that Ohio State couldn’t land the elite defensive tackle prospect has officially come to an end and Togiai is a major reason why.

Scouting Report

Togiai didn’t face the country’s best competition at Highland high school in Pocatello, Idaho, but the 6’3” 290-pound tackle shouldn’t be discredited for routinely being a man among boys on the field. His first step and ability to gain leverage is apparent, and Togiai fits the mold of an elite run stuffer thanks to his ability to control and shed blocks at the line of scrimmage.

He demonstrated excellent awareness in reading screens and trap blocks, but could struggle to find the field as a three-down linemen until he develops some consistent pass-rush moves. Given the Buckeyes’ perennially loaded front, don’t be surprised if Togiai works his way into the lineup after a redshirt year as an early-down defensive tackle.

Despite a strong push by Oklahoma, Proctor kept his commitment to Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes.

Since Urban Meyer and Kerry Coombs arrived in Columbus, Ohio State has turned into a secondary factory, routinely turning out NFL-caliber defensive backs at an alarming rate. The next player to join the B.I.A. position group is Owasso, Okla.’s Josh Proctor, who just faxed in his National Letter of Intent.

The recruiting process for the No. 8 ranked safety in the country has been an interesting one, starting with a surprise commitment in April, to rumors of a potential flip, but in the days leading up to the Early Signing Period, the four-star Proctor made his intentions clear, and he made good on his commitment today.

The second ranked player in the state of Oklahoma, the 6’2, 190-pound safety comes to Columbus as the nation’s 76th ranked player according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Defensive coordinator Greg Schiano led the recruiting on Proctor, who also held offers from Oklahoma, Michigan, Georgia, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Michigan, Texas, and more.

While it’s become normal for OSU DBs to wait their turn to get regular playing time, Proctor just might have the talent to see the field early and often for the Buckeyes.

Scouting Report

Proctor is one of the best prospects Oklahoma had to offer. According to the 247sports composite, the four-star is the No. 2 rated player out of the Sooner State. A combination of athletic ability and long arms has propelled Proctor to not only being one of the best in his home state, but a top-10 safety in the 2018 class. He helped bring Owasso High School a state title after stuffing the stat box; Proctor nabbed four interceptions and 35-plus tackles, while also seeing time on the offensive side of the ball, too.

He’s dynamic, and has the potential to be a star at the next level.

Less than a week after committing to the Buckeyes, the wideout has made it official.

It was a bit of an odd recruiting cycle for Ohio State. Not in the way that the Buckeyes were missing on talent (they certainly weren’t), but rather that a large number of Ohio State’s late commits had been targets for years, and took all the time they could exploring their options, rather than committing early.

MO➡️OH

Welcome to #Zone6, @kamm_o! #GoBucks #Supreme18 #NSD18 pic.twitter.com/l0JDyuLyrH

L’Christian “Blue” Smith, K’Vaughan Pope, Jaelen Gill and Jeremy Ruckert all took at least a year after receiving an offer to commit to Ohio State, though not many took their time like the newest Ohio State signee, Kamryn Babb did.

Babb, who committed just over a week ago, December 12th, received his offer back in June of 2016, and accumulated more than 20 offers in the year and a half since, though Ohio State never left the driver’s seat. Despite a season ending injury, the Buckeyes’ interest in Babb persisted, and after multiple visits to campus, Babb finally pulled the trigger and joined the class.

When he committed, Babb was the 20th member of the 2018 class, and the second receiver, alongside L’Christian Smith. The Christian Brothers College (St Louis, MO) product is ranked by 247Sports as the 65th best player nationally, 12th best receiver, and number two in the state of Missouri.

Scouting Report

Babb doesn’t fit the Buckeyes’ recent infatuation with freak-sized receivers, but the 6’1, 189-pound athlete is about as shifty as they come. Babb regularly made something out of nothing on the very same flash screens that offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson made a staple of the Buckeyes offense this season. He was also regularly deployed in the wild cat, although we haven’t seen the Buckeyes consistently return to that package since Braxton Miller graduated.

Babb offers the right combination of explosiveness and route-running ability to thrive as an H-back on offense, and the nation’s No. 5 receiver has more than enough ability to make an impact from Day 1 on offense. Still — don’t be surprised if Babb earns some early-career special teams reps due to his combination of speed and physicality that he displayed on the defensive side of the ball in high school.

The Florida-to-Ohio recruiting pipeline is alive and well.

Ohio State went into Florida yet again to grab a skilled player, as 4-star Orlando CB Sevyn Banks signed his National Letter of Intent, and is now a Buckeye.

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) December 20, 2017

Banks initially committed to Ohio State in April, and a torn ACL that cost him his entire junior season wasn’t enough to stop programs like Florida, Tennessee, LSU, and Florida State from also offering the 6’1, 180-pound corner.

Banks is rated as the No. 235 overall player, and No. 26 CB in the class of 2018 by the 247Sports Composite. He joins DT Taron Vincent, S Tyreke Johnson, and RB Brian Snead as the four Floridians expected to sign with the Buckeyes so far in this year’s class.

Scouting Report

The biggest thing that pops on Sevyn’s film is his sheer athleticism. He plays both ways in high school, and handled kickoff returns, and dominates in all facets of the game because of that athleticism. At 6-foot-1, his versatility and experience at receiver help him greatly at his true position, cornerback, where he’ll suit up for Ohio State.

He has outstanding ball skills, and plays with aggression and confidence, two things Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano values. He’s a surprisingly willing tackler, and knows how to use his frame to make plays in run support.

Technically speaking, he’s still pretty raw, and will need work, both in the weight room and with defensive backs coach Kerry Coombs before he’s ready to play significant time in Columbus. However, with his height, athleticism, work ethic, and pure speed, the ceiling is extremely high for Banks.

The four-star standout has signed his letter of intent with the Buckeyes.

When four-star rated tight end Jeremy Ruckert received his scholarship offer from Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer in May of 2016, the New York native shared the following with Land-Grant Holy Land.

“We were on the phone for a while and had a great conversation about football and my family and he ended the conversation by saying I have an offer to play football at the Ohio State University. It felt so surreal and it was an honor to get it from him.”

Well over a year later, the 6’5, 240-pound U.S. Army All-American can now be considered an Ohio State student athlete after inking his national letter of intent with the Buckeyes during the early signing period.

Verbally committed to the Buckeyes since July, the wait is finally over for Ruckert and the Ohio State coaching staff.

With numerous tight ends returning to the program in the fall such as Rashod Berry, Luke Farrell, and Jake Hausmann, Ruckert will add another quality option for the Buckeyes, who look to replace longtime starter Marcus Baugh.

A big time athlete with soft hands, Ruckert, the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of New York, proved he can make things happen on both sides of the ball as a senior for Lindenhurst High School.

Leading the Bulldogs to an undefeated 12-0 season and a state championship, Ruckert, the top overall tight end, and 29th overall prospect in the entire class of 2018, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, accounted for nearly 1,100 receiving yards, and 13 touchdowns, while also securing 61 tackles and 13 sacks as a senior.

Scouting Report

As blue chip prospects go, Jeremy Ruckert had somewhat flown under the radar up until late-June in his recruitment. He holds 30 offers from some of the nation’s elite programs, but it wasn’t until Nike’s The Opening event two weeks ago that the recruiting world was truly introduced to Jeremy Ruckert. Ruckert put on a show, both in drills and in 7-on-7 for team Alpha Menace. He was named 1st team offense following the conclusion of The Opening, along with fellow Buckeye commit Jaelen Gill. Catches like this one are a big cause for Ruckert gaining his fifth star in the newest 247sports player rankings.

Ruckert’s newfound attention has been well-deserved for a while. He’s been the top tight end in the 2018 class for months now, and it’s great to see him finally getting recognized. He’s the complete package as a tight end, and plays a very similar game to former four-time NFL pro-bowler and all-pro Jeremy Shockey. He has the athleticism of a wide receiver, despite his larger frame (6’6, 240 lbs), and is a matchup nightmare for corners and linebackers alike. He plays almost exclusively as a wide receiver for his high school, and is the first tight end recruit we’ve seen under Urban Meyer that could truly play the “Jordan Reed position” we saw him deploy at Florida.

Because of his time spent at receiver in high school, his need for development in his blocking skills could keep him off the field as a freshman (similarly to what we saw with Binjimin Victor or Austin Mack last season), but his strength and athleticism will likely make for an easy transition at the next level, especially with Kevin Wilson leading his development. Ohio State hasn’t seen this athletically gifted of a tight end since Dr. John Frank, who was arguably the best tight end in Buckeye history.

The Tennessee native puts pen to paper and is now officially a Buckeye.

The long wait to officially sign his letter of intent with the Ohio State University is now over for four-star class of 2018 running back Master Teague.

Committing to Ohio State over the likes of Georgia, Auburn, and others after having the chance to sit down with Urban Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff during a visit to the Columbus campus for a summer camp, Teague puts pen to paper nearly seven months after giving OSU his verbal pledge.

TN➡️OH @MasterTeagueIII is officially a member of @ToteNation! Welcome to the family!#GoBucks #Supreme18 #NSD18 pic.twitter.com/jhXm5uzK5W

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) December 20, 2017

Teague spoke to Land-Grant Holy Land back in the fall about what led him to end his recruitment in favor of the Buckeyes soon after announcing his commitment.

“There were several things that caused me to like OSU. I really liked their culture. I liked what they do with Real Life Wednesdays. I like the internships I saw their guys go on. I like the Athletes in Action opportunities. I like that Coach Meyer is not only feel responsible for helping his guys get an education but also getting a job. I like that we will be able to win a national championship. I am a very motivated person but the coaches at OSU added more motivation in me that was unique.”

While he didn’t earn his scholarship offer from the Buckeye coaching staff as an underclassman like many others, Teague has proven that he has what it takes to lead an offense down the field time and time again as a member of the Blackman Blaze (TN).

Rushing for over 2,000 yards and 24 touchdowns as a junior, Teague was well on his way to another excellent season before sustaining an ankle injury that cut his senior campaign short. Although things didn’t end the way he would’ve liked, the 5’11, 210-pounder accounted for around 725 yards and 11 scores on the ground during his final year with the Blaze.

Joining a stacked Ohio State backfield that will consist of players such as Mike Weber, J.K. Dobbins, Antonio Williams, Demario McCall, and fellow 2018 commit Brian Snead, Teague, the 12th running back, and 259th overall prospect in the class of 2018, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, might end up behind the eight ball when it comes to early playing time during his first season with the Buckeyes.

Needing bodies on special teams, Teague, like other true freshman, could see the field next year, but most likely will be inline for a redshirt season. Sitting out next season to bounce back fully from the left ankle injury and learn the playbook might be in his best interest, as it has worked out for many Buckeyes including current Ohio State standout Mike Weber, who wasn’t 100% early on at OSU.

Scouting Report

Teague’s skill set on the football field is extremely rare. At 5-foot-11, 210 pounds, Teague runs a 4.31 40 time(!!!!!). For comparison, Ohio State running back Mike Weber is 5-foot-10, 214 pounds, and runs a 4.52 40 time. That’s not saying that Weber is slow, it’s just saying that Teague is a freak athlete.

With Teague, as is usually the case with freak high school athletes, he’s pretty raw, and has some developing to do on the technical side of the running back position. He’ll need to learn the nuances of the position before he sees the field in Columbus, and thankfully for him, Tony Alford is one of the best running back coaches in the business.

With the sheer amount of raw talent and athleticism that Teague possesses, if he continues to work at honing his craft at Ohio State, he could be in the NFL a few years from now. As a runner, Teague is already very skilled. He has very solid footwork, cuts up the field with purpose, hits holes quickly, runs downhill, and plays with a lot of power. His ability to cut, paired with his strength, is a very dangerous, and very rare combination.

He still needs to work on the things a lot of young running backs need to work on. His patience is good, but it could be better. He has a tendency to get tunnel vision, he needs to survey the entire field so he doesn’t miss open holes, opting instead for more contact, and usually, less yardage. He also needs a lot of help in the passing game, both blocking and receiving, though there’s another back in this class that will likely do a lot of the receiving out of the backfield in place of Teague.

Could the Lake Travis star be the future for Ohio State?

If you’re looking for a high school to call a quarterback factory, look no further than Lake Travis, in Austin, Texas. The Cavaliers have produced an incredible eight straight D1 quarterbacks, and Ohio State signee Matthew Baldwin is the latest in that incredible line.

The streak reaches back to 2006, with Todd Reesing, and went through Garrett Gilbert, Michael Brewer, Colin Lagasse, Baker Mayfield, Dominic DeLira and Charlie Brewer. While the bar set by Baker Mayfield is very high, Baldwin could ultimately be one of the best of the bunch, especially if Ohio State lets him play his game.

Baldwin committed to Ohio State just under two weeks ago, on December 7th. Baldwin had been committed to Colorado State for months, but decommitted on November 30th, mainly because Ohio State had offered in early November.

While the three-star title and former pledge to a G5 school may scare some, Baldwin is a legitimate Ohio State caliber quarterback. He had a monster senior season, and has picked up a ton of major offers over the past four months, as he’s led his team to the Texas division 6A state title game.

Baldwin is ranked by 247Sports as the 442nd best player, the 18th best pro style quarterback, and number 58 in the state of Texas.

Scouting Report

Baldwin is relatively new on the scene of Ohio State recruiting. He’d flown under the radar for much of his recruitment, as he had been committed to Colorado State since July. However, in the past two months, he’s absolutely blown up, picking up six offers since November, after an outstanding senior season that saw him throw for 3397 yards and 41 touchdowns to only six interceptions.

Baldwin may not be the prototypical Urban Meyer quarterback, but in a Kevin Wilson system, he fits extremely well. He’s a capable runner, but his greatest strength is certainly his throwing ability, specifically his accuracy. He’s a smart player, and reminds this blogger a lot of Andrew Luck.

The latest addition to the 2018 recruiting class could begin a new family legacy of Buckeyes.

Four-star offensive tackle Max Wray couldn’t deny the opportunities playing at Ohio State would create, and after flipping to Ohio State from Georgia earlier in the year, he made things official during the Early Signing Period and faxed in his National Letter of Intent.

TN➡️OH

Big man @maxwray10 is officially a Buckeye! Welcome to the family!#GoBucks #Supreme18 #NSD18 pic.twitter.com/JxljEUD4tw

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) December 20, 2017

The 6’6, 289-pound OT out of Franklin, Tennessee is the No. 9 ranked player at his position, and No. 3 overall player out of the state, according to the 247Sports Composite. He held offers from most of the top programs in the country, including Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, and even his home-state team, Tennessee.

His decision to change his commitment from the Bulldogs did not come lightly, and once he made that decision, he was all-in for the Buckeyes. He told Land-Grant Holy Land that he was taking online courses to be able to enroll at Ohio State early — all part of his plan to contribute right away.

Well, me and Coach Studrawa are really tight. He’s an awesome guy and a really good coach. I’m really excited to work with him in the future. They basically told me, though, that they want me to come in and participate and compete as early as I can. They gave me an opportunity and it’s up to me to work for it.

The newly minted Buckeye could also be the first of two Wray brothers to end up playing football at Ohio State. Max’s younger brother Jake also plays OT, and despite only being a sophomore, is a beast at 6’5, 290 pounds. Never too early to look at the 2020 recruiting class, the Buckeyes hosted Jake during Max’s visit for the Oklahoma game, and could add another set of brothers to the Scarlet and Gray legacy soon enough.

Scouting Report

Wray likely didn’t face many players that could match up to his 6’6, 289-pound frame in high school, but Ohio State’s NFL-sized line could require him to redshirt and bulk up as a freshman before vying for playing time. Wray played right tackle in high school and displayed uncanny athleticism and flexibility for a player his size. He routinely won at the line of scrimmage with hand placement and strength.

Wray’s devastating ability to block down and create gaps in the run game will fit right in with the Buckeyes’ power-spread run scheme. His frame and ability to move in space could prove to be scary after a few off-seasons in the Buckeyes’ strength and conditioning program.

Another Trinity Christian Academy defensive back is headed to Columbus

Ohio State’s defensive back pipeline isn’t ending anytime soon. It’s hard to argue that any position group has been as consistently excellent under Urban Meyer as the defensive backs, as evidenced by seven draft picks from the group since Meyer’s arrival, including five first rounders. Another first rounder is likely on the way this season as well, with Denzel Ward expected to declare for the draft.

Aside from great coaching, be it from Chris Ash, Greg Schiano, or Kerry Coombs, the main cause of that DB dominance is excellent recruiting, and the 2018 class is no different. After landing six top 200 defensive backs in 2017, Ohio State added five more in 2018, and one of the best of the group is Tyreke Johnson (Jacksonville, FL)

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) December 20, 2017

Johnson committed just a few weeks ago, on December 5th, shortly after an official viait to Columbus. He was the 21st commit to join the class.

247 Sports has Johnson ranked as the nation’s 38th best prospect, the seventh from the sunshine state, and the fifth best safety in the 2018 class.

In terms of first year impact, the safety position opposite of Jordan Fuller is pretty much open next season, with Damon Webb and Erick Smith both set to graduate following the season. However, with Isaiah Pryor, Kendall Sheffield, Jaiden Woodbey, Josh Proctor, and Wayne Davis all set to battle for the spot next year as well, it would be surprising to see Johnson anywhere but special teams as a freshman.

Scouting Report

The Buckeyes’ never-ending thirst for long defensive backs continues with Johnson’s commitment. Standing 6’1, 190-pounds, Johnson possesses ideal size, athleticism, and ball skills that he routinely demonstrated on both sides of the ball at Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Florida.

Johnson’s willingness to come up and tackle in the run game, combined with enough speed and aggressiveness to lock down his side of the field, makes him an ideal outside corner in Greg Schiano’s press-man scheme. Ohio State doesn’t recruit corners who can’t play man coverage, and Johnson stands out in his ability to also get his head around to ultimately make plays on the ball downfield.

A crowded defensive backs room full of four- and five-star corners could delay Johnson’s arrival on the defensive side of the ball, but his physical mentality and straight-line speed makes him an early candidate to join the piranhas on the kickoff unit.

Following in his brother’s footsteps, the papers are in for the next great legacy at cornerback.

Ohio State football is a brotherhood, and never more so than when the program becomes a landing spot for more than one player in a family. Like Joey and Nick Bosa before them, Marcus Hooker is looking to follow his older brother Malik’s path to the NFL by way of Ohio State. Marcus has made his commitment to the Buckeyes official during the Early Signing Period and faxed in his National Letter of Intent.

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) December 20, 2017

The three-star CB out of New Castle, Pennsylvania is the No. 57 ranked cornerback in the 2018 recruiting class, and No. 21 ranked player in his football-proud home state, according to the 247Sports Composite. Hooker held offers from multiple Big Ten schools, including Penn State and Rutgers, as well as WVU, Cincinnati and others.

Ultimately, the 6’0, 185-pound legacy is looking to follow in his brother’s footsteps, and then some. Older brother Malik Hooker ended up being featured in just one season in Columbus before becoming a first round draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts.

It’s rare to enter the NFL with just one year of film, let alone to get drafted at No. 15, but if that’s what Malik Hooker was able to pull off, then his brother’s ceiling could end up being even higher with more time to develop.

Scouting Report

Marcus is built a bit differently than his brother is. He’s two or three inches shorter, and not as freakish of an athlete as Malik is, although not many people are. Despite a bit of an athletic gap, Marcus is still an extremely long, athletic defensive back that catches the ball very well, just like most Greg Schiano defensive backs. He’s listed as a cornerback right now, but will shift to safety at the next level, as his skill-set dictates.

He may not be the Olympic level athlete that his brother is, but at least according to his high school coach, Marcus may be a better player than Malik was, at least coming out of high school. His game is a bit more refined than Malik’s was, in terms of his coverage skills, tackling ability, and overall technique. He doesn’t have the center fielder-like speed of his brother, but he more than makes up for it with great anticipation skills, and long strides that allow him to cover a large amount of space.

However, that doesn’t mean that he won’t have a lot to learn once he arrives in Columbus. Most of Marcus’ high school success has come on the offensive side of the ball at wide receiver, due to his athleticism. The foundation is there, but as I said, he’ll need to spend a year or two developing his game, especially when it comes to tackling, and the nuances of the safety position in Ohio State’s defense.

Ohio State wouldn’t have offered him if they didn’t think that he had the ability to play at the Big Ten level, and both Greg Schiano and Kerry Coombs are confident that they can mold Marcus into the second Hooker brother to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft.

smith_jump.gif

Hailing from the same high school as Buckeye great Braxton Miller, the Wayne (Huber Heights) product committed to Ohio State in August over offers from Kentucky, Cincinnati, and others.

Here’s what he brings to the field:

Scouting Report

When it comes to wide receiver skills, there are two main things that can turn a good receiver into a great one, and neither of those skills can be taught: height, and speed. L’Christian Smith has both, in excess. Despite being one of the tallest receivers in the country, Smith isn’t very bulky (sub 200 pounds), and runs an incredible 4.4 40-time. That number may be a bit generous, but his speed is not in question, especially with the ball in his hands.

You won’t see Smith running at full speed very often, because for the most part his job at receiver is to track down the often underthrown deep-balls, which he has become very good at over the years. He’s not the most fluid route runner in the world, but his long strides and massive frame allow his to essentially box defensive backs out on inside routes, much like Bengals receiver A.J. Green does.

Smith will never be a huge run after the catch guy, but he’s unlike anyone currently on the roster, and will serve as a great target for whoever is playing quarterback in Columbus a few years down the road.

Here’s what the Sunshine State running back brings to the table:

Scouting Report

The Buckeyes hit another home run out of the Sunshine State. Brian Snead is electrifying with the football in his hands and definitely has the size (5’11, 200 lbs) and running style to be an every-down back. Tony Alford will have to work with him on being patient and not trying to bounce everything outside or reverse the field, but his athleticism and elusiveness is off the charts. Snead is excellent in making defenders miss and possesses breakaway speed. Snead and Jaelen Gill will be a lethal 1-2 punch in the future.
