With the graduation of Jalyn Holmes and Tyquan Lewis, the sophomore is ready to wreck havoc at defensive end for the Buckeyes.

“I got all this hype on my name, so I can’t come short of it.”

Ohio State defensive end Chase Young via Doug Lesmerises, Northeast Ohio Media Group

After a freshman year in which he registered 3.5 sacks in limited time on the field, things are about to get real for defensive end Chase Young. Even though he came to Columbus as one of the highest rated players recruited by Urban Meyer at Ohio State, Young had some time to get his feet wet with the depth Ohio State had at defensive end last year.

Now with both Jalyn Holmes and Tyquan Lewis having graduated, the spotlight is shining bright on Young, which is just how he wants it. The sophomore from Maryland knows just how high the expectations for him are, and he has the confidence to be even better than many are expecting him to be.

With Nick Bosa starting at one of the defensive end positions, and Young at the other, Ohio State has one of the scariest defensive lines in the country heading into this year. Young showed flashes of greatest last year in limited time, and the scary thing is that he says he has gotten even better as he heads into his sophomore year. Quarterbacks playing Ohio State this fall should be frightened that they’ll have to find a way to stay upright against the combination of Bosa and Young.

“You know how people always say the quarterback on the defense is the middle linebacker. But I really felt he was the quarterback of not just the defensive line, but the entire defense.”

Ohio State defensive end Jalyn Holmes on Tracy Sprinkle via Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Defensive tackle Tracy Sprinkle wasn’t invited to last month’s NFL Combine, so today’s Ohio State pro day is where Sprinkle is going to have to show scouts he is worth a pick in next month’s NFL Draft. Sprinkle was the only one of Ohio State’s 12 non-returning starters to not be invited to the NFL Combine, so to say that he has a chip on his shoulder might be a bit of an understatement.

After suffering a knee injury in the 2016 season opener, Sprinkle returned with 16 tackles and three sacks last year. The low production on the stat sheet is likely why Sprinkle wasn’t invited to the Senior Bowl or NFL Combine, but the defensive tackle’s impact on the game goes well beyond his statistics.

Sprinkle has been preparing for Ohio State’s pro day down in Florida, and he is ready to show NFL teams that he has the skills to be a contributor at the professional level. Despite the disappointment of not being invited to the NFL Combine, Sprinkle isn’t letting it get him down, and he knows the snub will only make him stronger as he works his way towards the NFL.

“He was really the difference for us in a lot of games, and as a coach, you’re saying ‘Man, is there a way I could have gotten that out of him earlier in the season.’ You’re kind of racking your brain trying to figure that out as a coach, but man, was he good for us.”

Ohio State men’s basketball head coach Chris Holtmann on Kam Williams via Chris Lauderback, Eleven Warriors

Who knows just what Ohio State’s season would have looked like had the Buckeyes gotten the type of production out of Kam Williams all season that they saw in the NCAA Tournament. The senior truly did save his best for last, scoring in double figures in each of his last five games this year, including 22 points in the First Round NCAA Tournament win over South Dakota State, and 19 points in the loss to Gonzaga.

With the injury to Keita Bates-Diop last year, more was asked of Williams, and he slowed down the stretch as the Buckeyes struggled mightily in Thad Matta’s final season. Heading into his senior year, there was plenty of uncertainty surrounding Williams and the Ohio State basketball program. The Buckeyes made a change at head coach by hiring Chris Holtmann, but the move happened in early June, which didn’t give Holtmann much time to make adjustments to a roster decimated by transfers.

Williams struggled early in the year, but as he started to heat up in December, so did Ohio State. Even though a three-game suspension produced many questions, Williams returned and didn’t take long to regain his footing. The end of Williams’ Ohio State career could have closed quietly after his suspension, but Williams made the most of the short time he had left.

While there were plenty of ups and downs in his Ohio State career, Williams still scored over 1,000 points during his time in Columbus, and made two NCAA Tournament appearances. Williams won’t go down as one of the most memorable Buckeyes, but when he found his shot he was fun to watch.

“I’m letting it hit me right now. We’ve been through so much. It just hurts you. The way you go out and that sensation I had about two weeks ago. So you think you can not only stay on that high horse, but play with that much confidence and play with that much focus.”

Ohio State guard Kelsey Mitchell via Colin Hass-Hill, The Lantern

It was supposed to be the fairy tale ending for Kelsey Mitchell in her final season at Ohio State. With the Final Four in Columbus this year, this was supposed to be the year where Mitchell and the Buckeyes finally made it to the national semifinals. Instead, the Buckeyes were upset in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament by Central Michigan.

Mitchell did all that she could to help the Buckeyes advance, scoring 28 points in the loss. The lone bright spot for Mitchell in the loss was that she passed Jackie Stiles to become the second all-time leading scorer in NCAA history. Even though it was a tremendous accomplishment for Mitchell, it still didn’t take away the sting that Monday night’s game was the last of her Ohio State career.

Despite the struggles of the Buckeyes in the NCAA Tournament, Mitchell will be remembered as one of the greatest players in Ohio State basketball history. Mitchell is hoping the success that she found in Columbus will help bring more talented players to Ohio State. While there will never be a Kelsey Mitchell in the Ohio State program, if they are able to get a player or two that is close to her caliber, they’ll reach their first Final Four since 1993.

Ohio State Pro Day: Did the top NFL prospects improve their draft stock?

All 32 NFL teams were in Columbus to watch some of the Buckeyes’ top prospects.

Of the 18 now-former Ohio State players to participate in this year’s Pro Day workout in Columbus, 11 had already gotten some face time with NFL scouts and coaches by way of the NFL Scouting Combine in early-March.

Several prospects opted out of certain drills at the combine, and Thursday’s event was another opportunity to complete those and further improve their draft stock -- there were also a handful of players participating who didn’t get a Combine invite, and were hoping to garner some attention.

Completing the Combine

Not every Buckeye who was invited to the Combine participated in every event, but those players made sure to fill in their drill results in Columbus on Thursday.

DL Tyquan Lewis missed a good portion of the on-field workout in Indy thanks to a nasty case of the flu, but was finally able to run his 40-yard dash (in the 4.6’s) and complete his broad jump (10’7).

Buckeye Sam Hubbard wasn’t injured, but chose not to run the 40 at the Combine. He had a decent sub-5.0 run in front of scouts at Pro Day, and solid performance during the position drills.

IMG_4971.JPG

Lots of players forewent the 3-cone drill at Indy, and it wasn’t particularly better for them on their home turf. Jalyn Holmes slipped at least once during the drill, and then went on to complete his broad jump (10+ feet) after skipping that particular drill in Indy.

Three Ohio State players also tried to one-up their Combine performance by re-running the 40-yard dash: Marcus Baugh, Damon Webb, Chris Worley. Their times were pretty consistent with what they ran in Indy, and may have helped their draft stock ever so slightly by shaving off a couple hundredths of a second.

Position drill standouts

Some players didn’t re-do any of their metrics at Ohio State’s Pro Day — for guys like J.T. Barrett, who was already a top performer with a 4.70 40-yard dash time at the Combine, it doesn’t make sense to negate their top score. Barrett did have a good showing in front of scouts during the passing drills, and had help from some former Buckeyes. Cardale Jones served as Barrett’s “center” for the drill, and with few receivers to line up, Brian Hartline was back in the mix.

Linebacker Jerome Baker had a few rough drops early on during the LB position drills, but after a few push-ups (!?) in between sets, he was back in the game and made some tough catches to finish out the afternoon. The Buckeye also spoke to the media after his workout and was one of the most thorough interviews of the day. Even if his on-field work did little to improve his draft stock, I’d imagine that the more he gets in front of teams and talks to them, the more that they’ll make sure that he’s on their draft board in April. (He really reminds me of Joshua Perry, in the best possible ways.)

Similar to Barrett, Denzel Ward ran an impressive 40-yard dash at the Combine, and opted to sit out of those particular drills early on in the afternoon. He showed good footwork and a nose for the ball during the DB drills, and made a couple big one-handed grabs to finish out the day.

There was only one offensive lineman — which seems almost impossible — working out at Ohio State’s Pro Day, Jamarco Jones. (Granted, there would have been two if Billy Price didn’t undergo surgery after the Combine.) He was the opposite of some of his brethren, recording a very not-so-impressive 5.50 40-yard dash in Indy, and decided not to make things any worse on Thursday. Jones showed good explosion during the OL drills and definitely garnered interest from several NFL teams.

Combine snubs

In addition to the 11 Ohio State players who got an invite to this year’s NFL Combine, there were seven draft-eligible Buckeyes who didn’t. Those players finally got their chance to impress scouts at Pro Day.

Some of the surprising omissions from early-March’s Combine were DT Michael Hill, SAF Erick Smith, and DL Tracy Sprinkle. Hill and Sprinkle both had good days, especially during position drills. They weren’t the fastest guys to go through the high knee drills, but did show effort and dominance in the tackling drills.

Some other Buckeyes who had their first opportunity to perform in front of scouts were DB Trevon Forte, WR Elijaah Goins, DL Nick Seme, and TE/FB Zach Turnure. Goins and Turnure provided some able-bodies for Barrett’s QB drills, and Goins specifically had an excellent broad jump. Forte ran a solid 40-yard dash and is built like a defensive back-linebacker hybrid. Seme struggled a bit during the three-cone drill, but showed solid effort — against some of the top DL talent — during his position drills.

IMG_4920.JPG

NFL sightings

  • New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick was in the building, working with the defensive lineman during drills and making notes during the DB drills. He was front and center to watch Sam Hubbard — someone considered a perfect fit for the Pats.
  • The Titans coach was helping to run the linebacker drills — which, given the former position of new Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel, isn’t all that surprising.
  • Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer was seen talking to Denzel Ward (and watching the DB drills pretty intently), while the team’s GM (Rick Spielman, the brother of OSU great Chris) was talking to Billy Price. Could Minnesota bring in Price to offset Pat Elflein? I’m sensing a Buckeye reunion sometime soon.
  • Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is always at Ohio State’s Pro Day, but he took some time to speak to Jerome Baker, as well as to say “hi” to his mom. (The Steelers picking an Ohio State LB to fill in for Ryan Shazier would be the ultimate power play.)

Georgetown Series from Nick Swisher Field @ Bill Davis Stadium Columbus, OH

Baseball: Ohio State plays three-game home series against Georgetown

The Ohio State baseball team is like an employee taking inventory on this six-game winning streak. It has checked all the boxes.

Everything has seemed to go right for the team. During the stretch, the Buckeyes have a 3.17 team ERA while averaging 7.17 runs per game. The stretch has included a win against Coastal Carolina, which has been ranked at times this season, and a sweep of a strong North Carolina-Wilmington team.

“Gives us confidence going into every weekend, knowing that everything is working for us,” junior pitcher Connor Curlis said.
Now the Buckeyes (14-6) will look to keep the momentum alive this weekend when they face the Georgetown Hoyas (5-14) Friday in a three-game series at Bill Davis Stadium.

Ohio State’s offense features five hitters batting above .300, and produced at least seven runs in five of the six victories on the recent tear. The Buckeyes’ lineup could continue to stay hot against the Hoyas, a team that has struggled to keep opponents off the scoreboard, combining for a 6.36 team ERA.

Georgetown’s starting rotation features only one player with an ERA below 6.14. That’s sophomore and Friday night starter Brent Killam, who threw seven innings of one-run baseball against Princeton his last time on the mound. The Hoyas’ bullpen only contains two pitchers with more than two innings of work to that list.

Curlis, fresh off a 6.1-inning, one-earned-run performance against California State University, Northridge, takes the hill first for the Buckeyes against a Hoya offense that has hit only four home runs this season. What it lacks in power it makes up for in speed.

“They’re going to run the bases,” head coach Greg Beals said. “They’ve got some stolen bases on their mark.”

Twenty-six stolen bases on their mark to be precise, and in just 28 attempts. That 93 percent mark ranks first in the nation.

At the plate, Georgetown’s offense is headlined by freshman phenom Eddie McCabe, who bats .356 and leads the team in RBI with 15 — no other Hoya has more than nine. Senior left fielder Austin Shirley leads off the lineup as the team’s top base stealer, and gives himself plenty of opportunity to commit baserunning thievery with a .410 OBP. Shirley has seven steals through his 19 games played.

Junior Ryan Feltner, 2-0 with a 6.26 ERA, will start the second game of the series for Ohio State while redshirt senior Adam Niemeyer gets the nod for Game 3.

Ohio State gets some love on Twitter from 4-star DE target

This DE happens to be the brother of a current Buckeye basketball member, Micah Potter.

Even though both basketball programs are done for the season, and football is still gearing up for the spring game, there are still postseason events happening for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Men’s hockey plays on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, and a dozen Buckeyes will be represented in the fencing championships.

Now, with that OSU athletics PSA out of the way, onto the main point for why you’re here: recruiting.

The football program got some good news. Whether it was in the form of getting some love on social media from a high-touted recruit, or getting some future visits penciled in, it was a pretty good day on the recruiting trail for the Scarlet and Gray.

It must run in the family

Already, the Buckeye basketball program has one of the Potter brothers. Micah Potter was part of the 2016 class that then-head coach Thad Matta brought in.

Flash forward a couple years later, and one of his other siblings is being recruited by the Buckeye football program. Or, is the younger sibling recruiting Ohio State?

#GoBucks pic.twitter.com/n4e7A04y13

— Noah Potter (@noah_potter10) March 21, 2018

Noah Potter, a four-star defensive end in the 2019 class, got the people on social media talking after posting that ‘Runs in the Family’ graphic on Twitter. Some people thought he commit to the Buckeyes, but that was not the case.

Even though he didn’t verbally attach himself to Urban Meyer’s program, things are still looking good for the Scarlet and Gray to pick up the Mentor, Ohio, native. According to 247sports, there are 15 crystal ball predictions in for Potter; all of them point toward the DE committing to OSU. Granted there haven’t been any new predictions in about a month, but with a recent offer from the Alabama Crimson Tide, and an unofficial visit to Wisconsin last week, the fact that nothing has shook the foundation of a Potter-to-OSU prediction seems like a good thing if you’re a Buckeye fan.

Potter already holds over 20 offers, with the likes of Penn State, Georgia, Florida, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame already in the game for the No. 8 talent in Ohio’s 2019 recruiting class.

A packed campus in early April

It appears that a trio of Sunshine State talents are making their way up north in the first week of April for a visit to the OSU campus. All three of them come from the same powerhouse high school, St. Thomas Aquinas.

According to Miami DieHards, safety Jordan Battle, cornerback Jaden Davis and linebacker Anthony Solomon are the three members that will see what the Buckeye program is about. All three members are part of the 2019 recruiting cycle—but only one of them has crystal ball predictions that lean the Buckeyes’ way.

Battle is the one that looks to be leaning toward OSU, with all 10 crystal ball predictions going toward the Scarlet and Gray. The four-star prospect also had offers from Georgia, Miami (FL) and Michigan, just to name a few. Earlier in the week, he spoke with SB Nation recruiting analyst Bud Elliott about his recruitment. With that being said, whatever Meyer and the Bucks did since offering Battle a scholarship on Feb. 23 seems to be working, and it might be worth pulling out the same stops for Solomon and Davis.

Solomon, like Battle, holds a four-star rating and has a slew of offers under his belt. However, Michigan and Miami (FL) are seen as the two programs that are trending in his favor. There are currently seven predictions in for Davis, and the Wolverines hold 86 percent of those predictions on the crystal ball; the remaining 14 percent go to the Hurricanes.

The last of the trio, who also happens to be a four-star, is Davis. The Hurricanes are the second leader for him, too, but unlike Battle and Solomon, a Big Ten program is not leading the predictions. The in-state Florida Gators are seen as the leader at the moment, but that has potential to change. According to his profile page on 247sports, the week after Davis visits Ohio State (April 6), he’s expect to take an unofficial visit to the Oklahoma Sooners.

Who knows how the Columbus visit will end, but with Battle already leaning on the Buckeyes, he could convince his teammates to flip to the Scarlet and Gray. If anything comes about the visit, we’ll definitely keep you updated.

LGHL Ohio State is one of few schools producing pro-ready offensive lineman

Ohio State is one of few schools producing pro-ready offensive lineman

usa_today_10504930.0.jpg

Plus, 12 Buckeyes will compete for the 2018 NCAA fencing championships, and more.

“There are only a handful of schools that routinely use pro techniques, even in a “spread” offense, and those schools do produce pro-ready offensive lineman — Ohio State, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, USC, Iowa, Alabama, and maybe a few more.”

-Geoff Schwartz, SB Nation

NFL free agency sees teams, coaches and players year-after-year in a week-long frenzy to try and make the best deal possible. Former NFL player and SB Nation contributor Geoff Schwartz recently wrote about how some of the recent BIG MONEY pay days to league veterans is in large part due to the lack of OL talent coming out of the college ranks.

Granted, even Schwartz knew not to lump Ohio State in with the schools who don’t produce pro-ready lineman. The Buckeyes are one of the few teams whose offensive line players -- as tackles, guards and centers -- not only succeed at the next level, but wind up having long careers, too. These facts help explain why Andrew Norwell is now one of the highest paid guards in the NFL, having signed a new five-year deal worth over $66.5 million with the Jaguars this offseason.

Schwartz’s analysis is good news for league veterans and good news for rookies out of Ohio State. When a team doesn’t want to throw the bag at a player who has almost a decade of wear and tear, they’ll at least have some options to go young with Buckeyes and other players already developed in a pro scheme.

“The Ohio State fencing team travels to University Park, Pa. for the 2018 NCAA Fencing Championships this week. Hosted by Penn State University, the event will run from Mar. 22-25, with championship bouts taking place at 1p.m. on the 23rd and 25th.”

-Ohio State Buckeyes

The Buckeyes will be represented by 12 fencers at this year’s NCAA Championships. Ohio State fencing has a long history of success competing for an NCAA title, finishing in the top-5 for the past 16 years, including three championship wins (2004, 2008, and 2012).

The team finished at No. 2 the past two seasons, and there is only one Buckeye competitor (Maximilien Chastanet) who has already claimed a national championship — winning gold in foil in 2016. Despite that being the sole win for anyone on this year’s Ohio State team, there are eight competitors who have been to the championships before. OSU is also one of only three teams to send the maximum number of fencers (12), along with Columbia and Notre Dame.

This is one of the fencing events that you should be able to catch on TV, with ESPN covering the semi-final and final bouts on ESPN3 (and live stream at WatchESPN).

“Even at a position loaded with touted recruits, the most intriguing weapon at wide receiver might be one who walked on to the Ohio State roster.”

-Austin Ward, Land of 10

For the most part, Zone 6 will look the same heading into the 2018 season. With spring practice now underway for the Buckeyes, the experience of the wide receiver group is obvious with so many draft-eligible players deciding to return to Columbus for one more season. One of those players started his Buckeye career as a walk-on, but became a household name in 2017: C.J. Saunders.

Ward notes in his article that Saunders has gained about 10 pounds since last season, and is working on both being more explosive in his route-running and adding bulk to his frame. With the extra weight, he already feels stronger and faster, telling Ward he wants to build on the opportunity he had last season.

“I always felt like I could play with these guys,” Saunders said. “But it was just really cool [last year] to actually see it happen. A lot of guys don’t get that chance, but I was fortunate enough to get that opportunity to get out on the field and show what I could do in front of a live audience, TV game, whatever it is. That was just really special.”

According to Ward, Saunders’ teammates are vying for him to have a spot in the rotation as well, with Parris Campbell considering him among “one of the elite receivers”. He may not have had the same kind of blocking skills as the other (bigger) receivers, but he brings other talents to the group and should see additional playing time in the season ahead.
