Which one do you hope OSU goes with this fall?

With the departures of veteran leaders Keita Bates-Diop, Jae’Sean Tate, Kam Williams, and Andrew Dakich, the Ohio State men’s basketball team is going to look considerably different when they start play in November. However, that won’t be the only thing that looks different, as yesterday the university’s athletic department unveiled the four finalists to be the new court design for the Value City Arena.

Check out all four options and vote for your favorite below.

Thanks for your feedback Buckeye Nation!
Here are the four finalists for the Schott court.

Last week, OSU asked fans to vote on their favorite designs, and four made the final cut. From there, the options will be turned over to the men’s and women’s basketball programs, who will have the final decision as to which hardwood will be gracing the Schottenstein Center this fall.

Fans were initially given 10 options to choose from, with varying colors, designs, patterns, and buckeye leaf integration. You can see all 10 of the original options here. Check out the finalists below.

While the final decision is in the hands of Chirs Holtmann, Kevin McGuff, and their basketball teams, if it were up to you, which version of the court would you like to see the Buckeyes play on this upcoming season?

The Buckeyes offer Leonard Manuel, the country’s No. 2 WR in 2020.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have been one of the more active teams in the recruiting process this spring. The Buckeyes have earned multiple commitments in the last month including four-star OT Jake Wray, the teams first commitment in its 2020 class.

However, the recent string of commitments is only the beginning for Ohio State as the program continue to build towards the future. The Buckeyes have targeted a plethora of the nation’s top talents and continue to offer elite prospects in the country.

Monday was no different as the Buckeyes officially sent a scholarship offer to a former Miami 2020 wide receiver commit, Leonard Manuel (Ocala, FL / Vanguard.)

Blessed To Receive An offer from The OHIO STATE!!!!! @OSUCoachMeyer pic.twitter.com/HuHUfWuRcC

— DANGER (@Begreatliltone2) April 23, 2018

Despite only receiving an offer to play for the Buckeyes this week, Manuel is a name that is familiar among those following Ohio State recruiting. Just last week, Manuel announced his top 11 schools since de-committing from the Hurricanes and the Buckeyes made the cut.

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer and Buckeyes’ WR coach Zach Smith have taken the reigns in recruiting Manuel, and the two have done an excellent job. Georgia is currently the favorite to land a commitment from the elite WR prospect, but Ohio State has been gaining ground in his recruitment this spring and are thought to be legitimate contenders in his recruitment.

Manuel is undoubtedly one of the country’s best athletes in the 2020 recruiting cycle. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have him listed as the No. 2 WR in the country and he is the No. 13 overall prospect despite position.

He has yet to visit any school since his de-commitment and he has plenty of time to visit schools, giving that he has two years of high school football to complete before he has to make a decision. Look for Ohio State to try and get him on campus multiple times in the next year in efforts to secure a commitment. With the Buckeyes looking to lose an enormous amount of talent at the position following this season, the WR position will be one of the more crucial positions for the Buckeyes in the 2020 class.

Top Ohio State target sets commitment date

As was previously mentioned, Ohio State has been busy adding multiple members to its 2019 recruiting class in the last month. The Buckeyes will be looking to add to this impressive haul later this year as one of their top targets has settled on a decision date.

Three-star safety prospect Jalyn Phillips (Lawrenceville, GA / Archer) announced Monday afternoon that he will announce his decision on his birthday this summer.

Committing On August 20th. Save the Date!

— JP⁵ (@jalyn_phillips) April 23, 2018

Phillips recently included Ohio State among his top schools and has already started taking official visits to those schools, most recently being Oklahoma.

The Sooners are thought to be the leading contender in Phillips recruitment, as the announcement comes on the heels of his visit to Norman, Oklahoma. However, he will likely take advantage of the four remaining official visits allocated to him by the NCAA in the coming months.

If Ohio State is serious about trying to secure a commitment from Phillips they will almost certainly have to be one of those teams to get him on campus. If Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff are successful in this attempt, the Buckeyes would have to be considered a serious contender for his services.

Phillips is currently a three-star prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, but after a successful spring camp season, he could easily see a fourth star added next to his name if he has a strong senior season. He is the No. 26 safety in the 2019 recruiting class and is the No. 370 overall prospect.

Future Buckeyes all over new ESPN Top 300

ESPN announced their first Top 300 rankings for the 2019 recruiting class Monday morning and several future Buckeyes were included. Making ESPN’s cut were the following:

  • No. 74 OT Doug Nester
  • No. 78 ATH Ronnie Hickman
  • No. 206 OT Ryan Jacoby
  • No. 225 RB Sampson James
  • No. 245 ATH Steele Chambers
  • *Not ranked was DE Noah Potter

As was noted by ESPN’s college and recruiting reporter Tom VanHaaren, the Buckeyes are sitting among the top college football programs in the country with five commits making the list.

Here is the ESPN300 commit scorecard for the updated rankings:

Alabama/FSU/A&M: 8
Michigan: 7
Georgia/Oklahoma: 6
Clemson/Ohio State/Notre Dame: 5
Miss. State: 4
Texas/LSU/Miami: 3
Illinois/Tenn/Auburn/South Carolina/Florida/Wisc/Wash/PSU/Ole Miss/MSU/Iowa: 2

Apparently the Terps crossed the line...literally.

“We’re not scared of anybody. We came out, and we knew they were going to try to intimidate us.”

-Ohio State lacrosse midfielder Jack Jasinski, via Edward Lee, The Baltimore Sun

Big Ten lacrosse may be a relatively new endeavor (it only became an official conference sport in 2015), but rivalries are already becoming strongly ingrained in the cultures of the six participating teams. Maryland and Johns Hopkins, which is part of the Big Ten in both men’s and women’s lacrosse, have the longest-standing rivalry, with a series dating back to 1895. Recently, though, things have started to get tense between Ohio State and Maryland whenever the two teams face off, including the pair’s most recent match yesterday.

The Ohio State lacrosse team has had an up-and-down season, but yesterday marked the biggest high of the year as the Buckeyes took down top-ranked Maryland in College Park by a score of 12-10. With the win, the Buckeyes stay alive in the Big Ten as they head into their final regular season matchup against Rutgers this weekend. The game was a rematch of the 2017 NCAA Championship game, which the Terps won 9-6.

In both instances, tensions broke out among the two squads. Yesterday, during the post-game press conference, junior midfielder Jack Jasinski, who recorded a career-high five assists and two goals in the win, alleged that Maryland players broke an unwritten rule during warmups which bars players from crossing the opponent’s 50-yard line. “We stood our ground and told them ‘Hey, you’re not going to come here and bully us,’” said Jasinski. “So that was what we did on the first play of the game. Came down the field, one shot and one goal.” Ohio State head coach Nick Myers backed up Jasinski when asked about the incident.

Maryland, meanwhile, alleged that Ohio State players were barking at them during warmups and crossed the 50 themselves. “We don’t seem to have this problem with other teams,” said head coach John Tillman.

The teams scuffled following last season’s Big Ten Championship game, also won by the Terps.

“I feel like I am the best safety here. I’m a hybrid safety. I can play in the box, I’ve got post range and I can also play man-to-man.”

-Ohio State safety Damon Webb, via Dan Hope, Eleven Warriors

Ohio State had 11 players invited to the NFL Combine earlier this year, but, of this group, only seven seem to be sure draft picks heading into this weekend’s NFL Draft. Cornerback Denzel Ward is projected as a consensus first-round selection, while defensive end Sam Hubbard and center Billy Price will likely go within the first couple rounds. Offensive tackle Jamarco Jones, linebacker Jerome Baker and defensive ends Tyquan Lewis and Jalyn Holmes are all currently projected to go within the first five rounds or so.

That, however, is where the uncertainty begins. Safety Damon Webb is considered by some to be a late-round pick, while quarterback J.T. Barrett, tight end Marcus Baugh and linebacker Chris Worley haven’t appeared on most major mock drafts at all. Webb is listed as the No. 156-overall player and the seventh-best strong safety in this year’s draft according to CBS Sports. Some analysts, like Pro Football Focus’s Steve Palazzolo, have called Webb the “best pure free safety” in this year’s draft, but with the other talent at safety, that’s no guarantee that Webb will be selected.

Barrett, despite his outstanding college career, is listed as just the 15th-best quarterback in the draft. Baugh, meanwhile, is going up against a number of outstanding tight ends from the Big Ten, including Mike Gesicki from Penn State, Ian Thomas from Indiana and Troy Fumagalli of Wisconsin. Worley is listed as the No. 20 outside linebacker in the draft. While the chances of getting drafted may be slim, all three of these multi-year starters have a shot at getting picked up as free agents after the draft.

In addition to this group, defensive tackles Tracy Sprinkle and Michael Hill and safety Erick Smith, who worked out for NFL scouts at Ohio State’s pro day, will likely not be drafted, but do have a chance to break into the NFL as free agents.

“We are fortunate to add Brian Maisonneuve to our outstanding lineup of head coaches. He has competed at a high level and coached in one of the most successful collegiate programs nationally. We look forward to the opportunities our student athletes will have under Brian’s direction.”

-Ohio State AD Gene Smith, via The Ohio State University

Ohio State athletics is welcoming a local star back to Columbus to lead the men’s soccer team following the retirement of John Bluem, who led the team for more than two decades. Bluem retired in March as the winningest coach in program history, having accrued a 206-161-58 record in 21 seasons. Now, Brian Maisonneuve of Columbus Crew fame will be taking the helm in the first head coaching role of his career back in Columbus.

An associate head coach at Indiana for the past nine seasons, Maisonneuve helped lead the Hoosiers to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and a national title in 2012. Maisonneuve was paired with head coach Todd Yeagley, a former college teammate and the son of legendary Indiana coach Jerry Yeagley. While at Indiana, Maisonneuve was consistently recognized as one of the top assistant coaches in the country, including earning the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Assistant Coach of the Year honors for the Great Lakes Region twice. He also spent two seasons as an assistant at Louisville and four years with the U.S. U-17 national team.

A former Hoosier himself, Maisonneuve was an All-American at Indiana under Yeagley, taking his team to the national championship as a senior and earning the Hermann Trophy as the nation’s top college soccer player. He finished his time in Bloomington as a two-time All-American and Big Ten Player of the Year. After college, Maisonneuve was allocated to the Columbus Crew prior to the start of the first MLS season in 1996. He wound up spending his entire professional career with the Crew. On the world stage, Maisonneuve was part of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, leading the unit with two goals, and 1998 World Cup squad.

BOOOOM!! Just like his older brother, Wray is a future Buckeye.

Move over Borens, and Bosas; another family is about to suit up for the Ohio State football team.

Following in his brother Max’s footsteps— Max is a 2018 offensive lineman who enrolled at OSU in January— Jake Wray, a class of 2020 tackle, has now shut down his recruitment in favor of the Buckeyes.

Committing to Ohio State just a couple weeks after the spring game, Jake, a four-star rated prospect became the first 2020 recruit to give Urban Meyer and crew a pledge.

While he might only be a sophomore with a couple years left to grow and mature, Wray, a Franklin, TN native, held scholarship offers from some of the top programs in college football. Before his commitment to Ohio State, the 6’5 290-pounder was pursued by the likes of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Miami, Oregon, Tennessee, and UCLA.

According to the 247Sports Recruiting Rankings, Wray is currently pegged as the 14th offensive tackle, and 91st overall prospect in the class of 2020.

The Land-Grant Holy Land recruiting team will have much more on Wray’s commitment to Ohio State soon.

Williams will be transferring to North Carolina.

Today, Ohio State Buckeyes running back Antonio Williams announced that following this month’s spring game, he has decided to transfer, and to continue his football career at the University of North Carolina.

New Chapter! Go Heels! #GDTBATH pic.twitter.com/K60b6dXa7R

— Antonio Williams (@A_B_Williams26) April 23, 2018

The rising-junior began to see playing time, as the backup to the dual starters Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins. As a sophomore for the Buckeyes, Williams rushed for 290 yards and three touchdowns. He also had five receptions for 25 yards.

However, with both Weber and Dobbins back for 2018, and with true-freshman Master

Teague showing his skills in the spring game, apparently Williams felt that it was in his best interest to continue his collegiate career elsewhere.

Williams is a New London, N.C. native, so he will be returning home to continue his career. In his transfer announcement he thanks coaches Urban Meyer and Tony Alford for giving him the opportunity to play at Ohio State and for their guidance over the years.

After he sits out the 2018 season, Williams will have two years of eligibility remaining.

How did the Buckeye defense improve this spring?

usa_today_10319534.0.jpg

Are there reasons to think this year’s defense will be better than last year’s?

Last week I took a look at how the offense improved throughout the spring — now it’s the defense’s turn.

Ohio State’s defensive ends will be better than last year’s, and may be the best in the country

I’ve already written about this a few times this offseason, but I think the 2018 defensive line — and defensive ends in particular — will be the best Meyer has had at Ohio State, including last year’s deep group.

With Chase Young and Nick Bosa backed by Jonathon Cooper and Jashon Cornell, the two-deep talent at defensive end is just ridiculous. Those four players average a 247 Composite rating of .9824, which would rank 31st overall in this year’s 247 Composite rankings. All were five-stars at some point in their recruiting cycle.

In the spring game, Young said that he would have had six sacks if he’d actually been allowed to hit quarterbacks. According to Bill Landis, Young said, “I told Dwayne (Haskins) if we could tackle, I would’ve hit him three times today and the ball would’ve popped out. He knows that. I let him throw. I told him before the game ‘I’m gonna be on your butt.’”

This is tough for opposing offenses because they can’t get away with double-teaming one star defensive end — like Joey Bosa was used to during the 2015 season. If they double team this Bosa, then that means opening themselves up to Young, Cooper, or Cornell flying off the edge.

Ohio State was 19th in adjusted sack rate last season, but 78th in 2016. While last year’s group was deep too, it actually didn’t have the same top-end talent that this year’s group of ends will have. Hubbard, Holmes, and Lewis are likely going to be taken in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft, but Young and Bosa could be top-10 picks overall.

Having this kind of talent at defensive end means that quarterbacks won’t have as long to set up deep passes, will be forced to adjust blocking assignments to compensate, or will be forced to throw quick, short passes all game long (which, as Indiana demonstrated in last season’s opener, can still be deadly!).

Defensive tackle depth is the best in Meyer’s tenure

That’s a lot of words about the defensive ends, but this is probably also the best group of defensive tackles that Meyer and Larry Johnson have had at Ohio State. Dre’Mont Jones is the clear leader of the group, presenting a pass rushing challenge nearly equal to the defensive ends.

But beside Jones is an incredibly deep group of tackles. This rotating group includes Robert Landers, Davon Hamilton, Antwuan Jackson (who didn’t play in the spring game), Haskell Garrett, and early enrollee Tommy Togiai. Togiai, who has a lot of talent ahead of him experience-wise, became the first freshman to lose their black stripe from the 2018 class. Oh, and the top-rated 2018 defensive tackle, Taron Vincent, is coming this summer. These players will provide pass rushing pressure up the middle, but importantly they’ll also clog running lanes and free linebackers to make plays.

Baron Browning looks ready to explode as a sophomore

Speaking of linebackers, Baron Browning’s spring game performance and reports from all of spring practice suggest that he’s ready to emerge for the linebacker corps.

Browning was one of the few Meyer mentioned by name in the spring post-game, saying “I thought Baron Browning played very good today.”

It sounds like Browning is only at middle linebacker while Tuf Borland is out with an injury, and that he could shift outside when Borland returns (leaving Hilliard and Borland in the middle). That would leave Browning, Malik Harrison, Keandre Jones (and potentially Dante Booker) outside.

Taver Johnson has (at least) four solid corners

Denzel Ward is gone, but the good news is that Kendall Sheffield seems to have upped his game this spring, while young blue chippers Jeffrey Okudah and Shaun Wade are ready for more responsibilities.

Sheffield set a school record in the 60m dash with the track team this spring and seemed to continue his growth from the end of last season. Sheffield is expected to fight with Okudah to be the top corner this season. Okudah missed the spring following shoulder surgery, but clearly has the talent to be an elite corner, even if his freshman performances were a little uneven.

But it’s also encouraging that Shaun Wade and Marcus Williamson had solid showings in the spring game. The young corners could force a four-man rotation at the position and will at least provide depth in case of injury. Elite cover corners could be necessary, since no one claimed Damon Webb’s open safety spot this spring.
