With vacant starting spots limited on the line, the former four-star recruit will continue his playing career elsewhere.

Via a social media post, redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Matthew Burrell announced that he would be transferring from Ohio State following the recently wrapped spring practice.

A former four-star recruit out of Woodbridge, Virginia, Burrell had been thought to be in contention to take over one of the vacant spots on the line this season, but as other options emerged, his standing in the rotation declined.

Screen_Shot_2018_04_18_at_5.56.30_PM.png

After playing in 13 games during his redshirt freshman campaign in 2016, Burrell saw action in 12 games last season, including the final 10. However, with Thayer Munford working his way into a likely starting position, there just weren’t a lot of options for the 6-foot-3, 306-pounder to crack the starting lineup.

In his social media post, Burrell thanked everyone at Ohio State for his opportunities, and said that he was not sure where he would continue his collegiate career. Wherever the lineman ends up, he will have two years of eligibility remaining.

We wish Burrell the best at wherever his journey takes him.

Player Safety: Helmets & Pads

New shoulder pads, no longer an NFL afterthought, could save stars like Luck, Rodgers

XTECH's shoulder pads fast becoming favorite of coaches and players, including draft prospects Josh Allen, Josh Rosen

Urban Meyer's reaction was priceless.

The Ohio State head coach's face was a mix of panic and confusion as he leapt away from the desk where a man he had just met was brandishing a helmet in his left hand. The man was Bob Broderick, a former New York Giants ballboy and longtime marketing consultant who is the founder of innovative shoulder pad and protective equipment company XTECH, and he had just hoisted the helmet above his head to make a point.

Broderick's right hand was already tucked between two thin pieces of patent-protected, scientifically-designed foam and in an instant the entrepreneur was slamming the helmet, quite violently, across the desk into the padding, scattering bottled waters and other items to the floor. Broderick quickly pulled his right hand up off the desk – clearly no worse for wear – and extended it to Meyer, who shook it somewhat sheepishly, still trying to grasp how Broderick had escaped without so much as a bruise or scrape. Turns out the combination of that foam, known as XRD Technology – the brainchild of an MIT-trained chemical engineer – and the design concepts Broderick and his partner Ted Monica, a former equipment manager in the NFL and USFL who once oversaw shoulder pad design at Riddell, had created was a perfect marriage. And Meyer had just become the latest XTECH convert, joining a legion of players, coaches and NFL, college and high school programs.

xtech.jpg

Left to right: Ted Monica of XTECH, Rutgers coach Chris Ash, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer and Bob Broderick of XTECH.

Player health and safety is a constant buzzword across the football world, but it's generally couched in terms of helmets and head and neck injuries. Just this week the NFL and NFLPA announced 10 models of helmets they were banishing – including the headgear of choice for Tom Brady, perhaps the greatest player in the history of the sport – and sensitivities are heightened following a 2017 season in which a succession of star quarterbacks were felled by what amounted to season-ending injuries, whether it be Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Luck, Deshaun Watson, Carson Wentz, Carson Palmer or Sam Bradford. Shoulders – those of $20M-a-year quarterbacks in particular – have never been more vital to the fabric and finances of the game, yet shoulder pads have long been something of an afterthought, with many players unsure of which model they wear and long-accustomed to simply throwing on whatever the equipment guy hands them at the start of the season.

Changing attitudes

Perhaps that is slowly, finally changing, as Broderick, Monica and their growing stable of investors, including former Super Bowl-winning coach Brian Billick, are convinced that this technology has the capacity to make the game much safer. They believe that Rodgers, had he been in their model, would not have suffered as severe a collarbone break last season, and they are eager to get an audience with him, while Luck, who has essentially missed two seasons due to shoulder issues, is scheduled to meet with Monica in two weeks and has long been considering switching to XTECH for his comeback.

Meyer, for his part, after speaking with Broderick and Monica for a few more minutes about their technology, promptly called his equipment manager and medical staff right there on the spot (Rutgers coach Chris Ash and then-Temple and now Baylor coach Matt Rhule were also in the small office at the time, their teams already in XTECH). Two weeks later, XTECH was on campus in Columbus, Ohio, meeting with Meyer and sizing players. Soon, roughly 80 percent of the Buckeyes would be in the pads. Josh Allen and Josh Rosen, two of the top quarterbacks in this year's draft, are big believers in the product. Players on 29 of 32 NFL teams now wear them, as well, as do more than 250 colleges and over 200 high schools (including Trevor Lawrence, the top-ranked 2018 prep quarterback who is headed to Clemson, and Taron Vincent, a five-star recruit headed to Ohio State whose father, Troy, just happens to be a former All-Pro defensive back who is the head of the NFL's football operations department).

"You can go through the matrix and talk about all of the technology and the science and the testing numbers," said Billick, who was in the room as well when Meyer was initially spooked. "But when you see that demonstration with the helmet – and that's real, that's not some stunt – that shows you the quality of these pads. And I'll challenge any other equipment company to come in with their hands, and we'll do it with our pads and you can try it with yours.

"I've known Bob for years and when he brought the product to me it was in the development stage and he was deciding whether he was going to take this on or not, and he said, 'What do you think?' And I say this all of the time, with the concussion protocols and rule changes we are taking the head and helmet out of the game, but that means even more stress on the shoulders and those injuries. And with this XRD Technology and XTECH patented design, basically these are custom-fitted, lightweight pads that allow for greater range of motion and protection.

"This is where pads need to be and obviously they are evolving in other sports as well, and when I saw this product I said, 'I'm all in.' You ask players what gloves they wear and what shoes they wear and they can tell you exactly what in any conditions or cold weather or whatever. And then you ask them which shoulder pads they wear, and you get a blank stare. The shoulder pads really hadn't changed in 25 years, but they are now, and they need to."

LGHL How Dwayne Haskins is approaching Ohio State’s QB battle

How Dwayne Haskins is approaching Ohio State’s QB battle

usa_today_10518476.0.jpg

There’s a lot of speculation about who will be the No. 1 quarterback for the Buckeyes in 2018, but Haskins is trying to rise above it.

There has been a lot of focus since the final snap of the 2017 season on who will end up being the new No. 1 quarterback for Ohio State. After so many years of counting on J.T. Barrett, the three-time captain is no-longer an option, and Urban Meyer has said repeatedly throughout the spring that none of the three QB options have stood out enough to name the starter this far ahead of the season.

The three guys competing for the starting job are red-shirt junior Joe Burrow, red-shirt sophomore Dwayne Haskins, and red-shirt freshman Tate Martell. Burrow was the expected heir to the position, having earned the backup spot in 2016, but hand surgery ahead of the 2017 season opened the door for Haskins to get more heavily involved.

It was a bad year for Burrow to miss out on taking those garbage-time snaps, since it was in those minutes that Haskins developed enough to help lead the Buckeyes to another win over rival Michigan once Barrett was sidelined with an injury. Haskins’ performance throughout the 2017 season had some fans calling for him to take the starting job before Barrett was even out the door.

This is where things get tricky for Meyer and his staff. With a healthy Burrow back taking snaps, and Haskins already having in-game success -- not to mention, Martell’s incredible athleticism — the QB battle is apparently neck-and-neck-and-neck and the decision will be a big one.

Why are Ohio State fans excited about Haskins?

After taking a redshirt his freshman season in 2016, Haskins had fallen to No. 3 on the depth chart during spring practice in 2017. Burrow winning the backup competition was a bit surprising to fans who were expecting Haskins to come in like a young 12-gauge and start throwing bombs 70-plus yards. (He didn’t.)

But when Burrow was sidelined just ahead of the season, Haskins slid into the No. 2 spot and did everything he could to capitalize on his snaps in garbage time and stay atop the QB options behind J.T. Barrett.

Haskins saw playing time in eight games last season and went 40-of-57 for a 70.2 completion percentage, 565 yards, four TDs and only one interception. He also carried the ball 24 times for an additional 86 yards — he’s certainly no Braxton Miller, but I see him being a little more mobile than say, very-large Cardale Jones.

Haskins earned fans trust during The Game against Michigan, when he was able to fill in for an injured Barrett and lead the Buckeyes to a come-from-behind win over their rival.

During the spring game, the quarterbacks rotated between teams Scarlet and Gray, but Haskins finished the day going 9-of-19 for 120 yards and two touchdowns through the air, including a 43-yard long-ball. He may not have notched quite as many yards as Burrow on the day (238 yards), but Haskins also didn’t commit a turnover, so...

What is Haskins doing to earn the starting spot?

The quarterback won over Buckeye Nation when he committed to the program, and video surfaced of a young Haskins touring the Ohio State facility and talking about his dream of playing quarterback for the Buckeyes. Following in the foot steps of his favorite player — at least back when he was nine years old — Troy Smith, Haskins is looking to fully realize his dream and take over as the team’s starting quarterback.

After the spring game, Haskins spoke to the media about the quarterback competition, and noted that even though the team can’t really do football stuff ahead of fall camp, that he’s taking his potential role as the leader of the Buckeyes seriously. From offseason workouts to working with his receivers on Saturday mornings, he focused on “showing the coaches that I’m dedicated and ready to be in”.

Organizing workouts with his offensive teammates is a good first step in creating chemistry on the field, as well as to show coaches how seriously he’s taking the opportunity to be the starter. Haskins knows there is a lot more involved in being a No. 1 QB at a program like Ohio State, and even admits, “I feel like I’m ready, but I’m not ready.”

He explained further, “It takes time, you have to go through fall camp, and keep building our relationship, keep building the team. It’s going to take time to get there; it’s a journey more than it is a race, so we’re just working every day to get to that point.”

When it comes to putting in the work, Haskins has done everything that has been asked of him — and more — and at the end of the day, that’s all he can do. Burrow is an insanely talented quarterback as well, and Buckeye Nation is lucky to have so many qualified players to lead the charge. But what’s good for the team, isn’t necessarily great for the player, and we all know what can happen when a QB competition goes all the way through camp (cough, 2015 cough).

Haskins isn’t prepared to back down anytime soon, and while he’s not necessarily sick of talking about the QB battle, he’s “going to keep doing what I have to do until it’s no longer a question.”

How might the competition affect Burrow and Martell?

IF Haskins wins the starting job, there are pretty big implications for the rest of the depth chart. Joe Burrow is graduating from Ohio State this spring, and if he isn’t the heir-apparent for the starting job, he’s already made it known he intends to transfer -- and as a graduate transfer, he wouldn’t be forced to sit a year before getting back on the field.

With such high stakes on the line for Burrow, Haskins is well aware that the quarterback competition can’t seep further into the group of three’s friendship off the field. Martell is the young guy in the group, and he isn’t likely to go anywhere based on this year’s decision. Plus, the coaches have alluded to coming up with some packages to get him on the field.

“I mean we’re all fighting for the same thing, we all know that,” Haskins said after the spring game. “The biggest thing for us is still being friends at the end of the day.”

Putting a priority on their off-field friendship is important, especially for those who will still be on the roster in 2018. We all saw how quickly a backup QB can be called upon, and you’d be crazy to think that Barrett’s friendship with Cardale Jones didn’t at least contribute to the team’s success through the 2014 postseason.

So who does Haskins think will be the starting quarterback in 2018? “I feel like I should be the guy, but I’m going to keep doing so until it’s proven.”

It could be a busy couple of weeks for the Buckeyes.

There’s been a pretty steady flow of Ohio State Buckeyes recruiting news in the past few months. The Buckeyes added two commitments: Ryan Jacoby and Sampson James, in March. Additionally, they’ve picked up two thus far in April, Noah Potter and Ronnie Hickman—both of which happened in the last couple of days.

That flow could be interrupted in the next few weeks, however, as several Buckeye targets will be announcing their commitments before summer rolls around. Let’s take a look at who some of those recruits on commitment watch are, and when Buckeye fans should expect to see them announce their college decisions.

Garrett Wilson

Of all the names on this list, Garrett Wilson is pretty easily at the top for my pick for next recruit to commit to Ohio State. He was on campus this past weekend for an official visit, and had a fantastic trip. He’s headed to Texas for an official visit this weekend, and will be making his commitment announcement shortly after finishing that visit.

The trip to Austin is, in my opinion, a precaution, and just Wilson’s way to confirm his decision, whilst staying true to his commitment to visiting Texas. He has a very good relationship with Texas’ staff, and may ultimately just be visiting as a courtesy. Ohio State is at the top of his list right now, and I don’t expect that to change before his announcement.

Wilson, a Lake Travis product, and former teammate of Buckeye quarterback Matthew Baldwin, is ranked No. 46 nationally, and sixth among all receivers.

Cade Stover

Cade Stover is a very familiar recruit to Ohio State fans. He picked up an offer from Ohio State more than a year ago, and has been on campus quite a few times since then. He’s been pretty open about Ohio State leading in his recruitment, and nothing leads me to think that his mind has changed recently.

He visited Oklahoma this past weekend for their spring game, and while he had a good visit, Ohio State still led his recruitment after that trip. He’s heading to Columbus this weekend, and I’d be pretty surprised if he didn’t leave as a member of Ohio State’s 2019 class.

Stover is the 126th player nationally and the No. 8 ranked linebacker. He’d be the third recruit in the class from Ohio, along with Noah Potter and Ryan Jacoby.

Harry Miller

Harry Miller may be the recruit (outside of EJ Smith, the son of Emmitt Smith) that generated the most buzz this weekend at Ohio State’s spring game. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound center from Buford (Georgia) looked like a grown man roaming the sidelines, and was rumored to be a possible commit before the weekend ended.

While that commitment didn’t come, Ohio State does sit at the top of his list, and as of now, this is a two team race between the Buckeyes and Stanford. Miller will be making his announcement before he goes on a mission trip this summer, and right now, Ohio State is pretty heavy favorites.

Jordan Battle

One of the longest tenured members of the commitment watch list, this one is becoming slightly less likely everyday. Battle was extremely close to committing back in mid-March, but ultimately decided to hold off. He was scheduled to visit Columbus for the spring game, but ended up at Miami’s spring game instead, because of the possible bad weather.

While Ohio State is still at the top of Battle’s list, the commitment of Ronnie Hickman isn’t an encouraging sign for the chances of Battle joining this class. Ohio State is only looking for two safeties in 2019, and with the addition of Hickman, they only need one more. I think Battle is at the top of their list right now, but this recruitment may go into the fall depending on how Ohio State wants to play it.

Battle is 357th nationally and the 30th best safety, according to the 247sports composite.

Grant Gunnell

Ohio State could be landing their quarterback for 2019 very soon. After examining a number of options at quarterback, the Buckeyes have honed in on the pro-style (noticing a trend these past few seasons?) star from Houston. Gunnell, a former Texas A&M commit, is set to take his official visit to Columbus in two weeks, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends his recruitment shortly after that visit.

Ohio State leads this recruitment, and while Oklahoma State, LSU and Oregon are still present, this is Ohio State’s battle to lose. A good visit could very well deliver Urban Meyer his quarterback for this class.

Gunnell is ranked No. 54 nationally, and second among pro-style quarterbacks.

Price’s injury during the combine has NFL teams a little concerned.

“I’m glad I did that. To hear it from me, to make sure I can set the record straight. I control the narrative and say, ‘Hey, I’m going to be fine. I can show you everything you want to see. It’s not as significant as everyone is making it to be.’”

- Billy Price via Alexis Chassen, SB Nation

Former Ohio State center Billy Price is out on a mission to let NFL teams know that the injury he suffered during the NFL Combine isn’t going to keep him out any longer than planned. Price’s timetable for a return to health is in June, which leaves plenty of time to be ready for the season’s start. The question now is whether or not the injury will cause Price to fall some in the draft. Originally looked at as a first-round pick after switching from guard to center last season, Price might have to set new expectations depending on how the draft goes.

The good news for him is he could end up in a better situation than before, and that might help his growth in the long run as he becomes a professional. Right now, Price is expected to drop into the middle of the second round, or even further, depending on what teams decide to do. All of the doctors he’s checked with have him coming back on time but it will be up to teams to have faith in Price.

“And, just for the record, Brian Snead and touted H-back Jaelen Gill aren’t even on campus. It also doesn’t account for Demario McCall, who figures to be involved in the running game in some capacity despite primarily looking like more of a slot receiver at this point. So, if any unit qualifies as having an embarrassment of riches, Ohio State’s collection of tailbacks has to be on the short list.”

- Austin Ward, Land of 10

Ohio State has a bit of a problem. It’s a good problem to have, but a problem nonetheless. The Buckeyes have one of the deepest positions in the country at running back. For starters, you have J.K. Dobbins, coming of a Big Ten Freshman of the Year candidate performance, and Mike Weber, who has rushed for over 1,000 yards himself. From there, you have Antonio Williams who has shown marked improvement over his spring and throw in Master Teague - an early enrollee - and just those four are enough to make any football program jealous. The real problem is that there’s only one ball to give and not nearly enough minutes for all of them over the course of the game.

Add to it that the Buckeyes are also expecting Jaelen Gill later in the year and as mentioned above, Brian Snead is not expected to be a slouch either. There’s no way you can really take carries away from Dobbins or Weber so it’s going to be a tough assignment for the coaching staff in action, but running backs coach Tony Alford has done a great job in the past of making sure his players get the time.

“I think Jeremy Ruckert might be the best tight end prospect that I’ve ever seen and recruited. His skill set is ridiculous. Now it’s a question of getting him ready to play.”

- Urban Meyer via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

There are five incoming freshmen that aren’t with Ohio State this spring that could still make an impact this fall, and Ryan Ginn of Land of 10 has them all listed. Offensive lineman Nicholas Petit-Frere, running back/H-back Jaelen Gill, defensive end Tyreke Smith, safety Josh Proctor, and tight end Jeremy Ruckert all have the potential to see the field in 2018 and in expanded roles depending on how their fall camp goes.

Ruckert, especially, to me seems like he has a chance to stand out. With Marcus Baugh moving on, the spot is somewhat up for grabs but the competition has been fierce this spring.

Luke Farrell, Rashod Berry, and Jake Hausmann have been working all offseason for the starting job, so Ruckert will definitely have his work cut out for him. But if he’s as good as Meyer thinks he is, then he could be competing for that starting spot when it’s all said and done. And obviously, with all of the offensive line shifting, Petit-Frere could have an excellent chance at seeing some playing time as well.
