LGHL Ohio State’s Urban Meyer has a new focus, and it comes off the field

Ohio State’s Urban Meyer has a new focus, and it comes off the field

Coach Meyer has long been worried about on the field problems, but his focus has shifted over the years.

“This is a topic of conversation among my colleagues in the profession now. It’s constant now. Fifteen years ago, no. Back then it was, Tell me about the spread offense. Tell me about punt return. Now it’s about the mental and well-being of your players.”

- Urban Meyer via Bruce Feldman, Sports Illustrated

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has had a well-documented history of his competitiveness and desire to win games. It essentially drove him out of Florida due to health issues often caused by the stress to be perfect. Obviously, that Urban Meyer is long gone, and though the competitive drive remains, he’s figured out how to balance his time and family with his job in football. Now, Meyer is doing even more to learn and promote things regarding mental health. Bruce Feldman did a wonderful article on it and how it affects players such as defensive tackle Robert Landers.

Meyer makes a great point when he says that mental health in sports is getting so much more awareness than before. Look no further than Kevin Love from the Cleveland Cavaliers or DeMar Derozan for the Toronto Raptors, both of which opened up about their struggles with mental health. Meyer has instilled an importance in the topics similar to that and has “Real Life Wednesdays” every week where they have a speaker and talk openly about problems they face.

“You can win a lot of games in any conference with the ability to develop players (look at Michigan), but Indiana will never be INDIANA again without recruiting a whole bunch of big-name players. ”

- Marcus Hartman, Dayton Daily News

We got a small glimpse at what could be last season when Ohio State and Indiana met on the basketball court. Buckeyes coach Chris Holtmann and Indiana Hoosiers coach Archie Miller have begun the process of rekindling an old rivalry between Ohio State and Indiana and with the recent recruiting success for both teams, things could heat up quickly. The Hoosiers picked up Romeo Langford, a five-star shooting guard. Holtmann, meanwhile has had similar pickups, most recently getting Alonzo Gaffney for the 2019 class.

Holtmann has also had success with getting transfers from other teams. Based of last season alone, Holtmann has the edge right now in the rivalry as he led Ohio State to a 25-win season, while the Hoosiers and Miller struggled, finishing 16-15. Either way, both coaches have a bright future ahead of them and there will almost certainly be plenty of high-stake matchups between the two in the coming years.

“And I think there’s a really good chance that what truly has him energized right now, both as a recruiter and in getting ready to contend on the field again this season, is erasing the painful, puzzling memory of what happened last November at Iowa.”

- Austin Ward, Land of 10

Has Clemson helped Urban Meyer get some of his motivation and inspired him at all? The answer is probably not, but it’s still an interesting question. I think Austin Ward of Land of 10 makes a great point when he says what’s probably motivating him the most right now is the loss to Iowa last season, when the Hawkeyes dismantled the Buckeyes in Kinnick Stadium. That loss essentially knocked Ohio State out of the national title picture, after the Buckeyes had previously dropped a game to Oklahoma at home.

Alabama and Clemson provide a nice benchmark for Meyer to match however, as both have won championships since the Buckeyes last hoisted the trophy in 2014. The Tigers have beaten Ohio State both times they faced each other under Meyer, so it’s understandable to think that Dabo Swinney might be a thorn in Meyer’s side. Hopefully the Buckeyes will be able to exact some revenge or find the peak of college football again this season.

LGHL 4-star WR includes Ohio State in top schools list

4-star WR includes Ohio State in top schools list

The Buckeyes makes the cut for a wideout target, while another WR target sets his commitment date.

Just days after earning a commitment from what could be the No. 1 wide receiver in the 2019 recruiting class in five-star Garrett Wilson, the Ohio State Buckeyes continue to anticipate a massive departure at the position following the 2018-19 season. The Buckeyes could realistically lose the majority of their current group of receivers, making the position one of great importance for recruiting.

Luckily, the Buckeyes are off to a terrific start and the team is hoping to watch that streak continue. Early Monday morning, one of Ohio State’s top remaining targets at the position announced his top eight schools—and the Buckeyes made the cut.

Four-star WR TJ Sheffield (Thompson’s Station, TN / Independence) included Notre Dame, Penn State, Louisville, UNC, Purdue, Virginia Tech, Arkansas and Ohio State in his list of schools he will focus on for the remainder of his recruitment.

Top 8 pic.twitter.com/TDge1uD8pm

— Tj Sheffield (@the_tj2) April 30, 2018

Sheffield is ranked by the 247Sports Composite Rankings as the No. 233 overall prospect and is the No. 37 WR in the 2019 recruiting class. He was committed to Tennessee for most of last year before decommitting from the program last October.

The Buckeyes just offered Sheffield a couple of months ago but he has already found time to see what the program has to offer, taking an unofficial visit to Ohio State on March 31.

Though, he also then took an unofficial to Purdue one day later, who also made his cut.

Ohio State WR target sets commitment date

Sticking with the importance of the WR position for Ohio State in this year’s recruiting cycle, Ohio State learned Monday that one of its top WR targets will be naming his college selection later this month.

Just one month after including Ohio State in his top six schools, Ramel Keyton (Marietta, GA / Marietta) will choose between Auburn, Miami, Ole Miss, Penn State, Tennessee and Ohio State on May 17.

I will be announcing my commitment May 17th .

— Holiday ‍♂️ (@Wlmel10) April 30, 2018

Keyton is a four-star prospect and is considered the No. 165 overall prospect in 2019 and is the No. 27 WR according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

While Keyton is likely higher on Ohio State’s big board compared to the aforementioned Sheffield, Keyton has yet to make it to campus. The fact that the Buckeyes are included in his top six schools speaks to the abilities of WR coach Zach Smith.

Keyton is likely going to be heading to Tennessee here in a couple weeks, but if there is one thing going in Ohio State’s favor it is that he is teammates with current Buckeye pledge OT Jake Wray. Look for the Buckeyes to try and get Keyton on campus in the coming weeks but even if they are able to set up a visit, it will be surprising if Keyton goes anywhere other than Tennessee.

That being said, if the Buckeyes do miss out on Keyton, expect them to go all out on Sheffield and their other targets at the position including four-stars John Dunmore, David Bell, Marcus Washington, Zion Puckett, Jameson Williams, Trey Knox, Jalen Curry, Lance Wilhoite, and Elijah Higgins.

Ohio State offers elite 2020 OT

Urban Meyer has never shied away from saying football games are won in the trenches and because of that, the Buckeyes target the best offensive linemen year in and year out in recruiting.

The Buckeyes proved this true as they offered one of the best in the 2020 recruiting cycle in offensive tackle Turner Corcoran (Lawrence, KS / Lawrence Free State.) The 6-foot-6, 285-pound sophomore took to Twitter Monday to announce his Ohio State offer.

Blessed to have earned an offer from THE Ohio State University! #GoBucks @markpantoni @CoachStudOL pic.twitter.com/lZIzbPaU8P

— Turner Corcoran (@turnercorcoran) April 30, 2018

With just two years of high school football under his belt, Corcoran has already shown enough to be considered one of the top prospects in the country. 247Sports has him listed as the No. 93 overall prospect in 2020 and is the No. 15 OT.

Corcoran has built an impressive offer sheet, despite his age, that includes Kansas State, Iowa State, Notre Dame and now Ohio State. Expect that list to only grow in the coming years. He has already taken one unofficial visit to Iowa State and expect the Buckeyes to try and do the same in efforts to secure him.

Future Buckeyes earn invitations to The Opening Finals

The Opening Finals will be held from June 30 through July 3 and will be moving to Dallas this year after previously taking place at the Nike HQ in Beaverton, Oregon. Multiple Ohio State commits and targets have been invited to the finals including multiple from last Sunday’s Dallas Regional which sent a record 17 of the country’s top prospects.

Ohio State’s most recent commit, Garrett Wilson, was one of those to receive an invitation, as well as Buckeye targets five-star safety Daxton Hill, four-star DB’s Jeffery Carter and Erik Young. Both Carter and Young have Ohio State listed among their top schools while Hill has been trending towards the Buckeyes in recent months.

The current list of Ohio State commits and targets who have invitations includes:

  • 5-star wide receiver commit Garrett Wilson
  • 5-star safety target Daxton Hill
  • 5-star defensive end target Nolan Smith
  • 5-star linebacker target Brandon Smith
  • 5-star athlete target Horace McCoy
  • 4-star offensice tackle commit Doug Nester

LGHL Chris Holtmann has a lot of roster to work with next season

Chris Holtmann has a lot of roster to work with next season
Meredith Hein

Despite losing four players, the second-year coach has veteran talent, transfers and true freshmen to take over this fall.

“Much like it did the first year under Holtmann, the starting lineup will likely be pretty fluid once the season tips off. There are a lot of new pieces to work with in year No. 2, and it will take a few games to see what lineups work best together in game action.”

-James Grega, Eleven Warriors

Chris Holtmann managed to do a lot with a little in his first year as head coach at Ohio State. However, in retrospect, he actually had a lot of talent on a limited roster. Keita Bates-Diop wound up being named Big Ten Player of the Year. Jae’Sean Tate ended his senior year with 1,512 career points. Kam Williams continued to be a threat from range, and Andrew Dakich proved to be an excellent addition as a grad transfer. Holtmann himself earned Coach of the Year honors as he was able to merge this veteran talent with young, unproven players to lead his squad to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Unfortunately for Holtmann, the four aforementioned players will not be on the roster next season. Bates-Diop is foregoing his final year of eligibility and is a likely first-round pick in the NBA Draft in June. The other three have no eligibility remaining. Still, all hope is not lost. Holtmann was very creative with his lineups last season, giving 13 players time on the court which will prove valuable now that much of the veteran leadership is gone. In particular, center Kaleb Wesson ended last season averaging 10.2 points per game and has an opportunity to play an expanded role in 2018-19. Guard C.J. Jackson will be entering his senior season and will likely be the de facto starter at point guard next season. Forwards Kyle Young and Andre Wesson also look to figure into the early starting lineup.

Additionally, Holtmann has made Ohio State an attractive landing spot for transfers, including Wake Forest guard Keyshawn Woods and Florida State guard C.J. Walker, bringing ready-made veteran talent to the young team. The coach has also enhanced the recruiting pipeline in a single season, drawing in four-star recruit Luther Muhammad, who will likely start at shooting guard come the fall.

“With an enviable mix of young talent and experienced players who returned for their final year of eligibility, Ohio State should be in position to produce another big haul in the 2019 NFL Draft.”

-Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

The dust may still be settling on the 2018 NFL Draft, which saw seven former Buckeyes selected, but analysts are already eyeing a number of current Ohio State players who could be taken early on in the 2019 draft.

First, and perhaps most obvious, is defensive end Nick Bosa, who will be entering his third season at Ohio State this fall. A five-star recruit coming out of high school, expectations were through the roof for the younger Bosa before he even stepped onto the field at Ohio State, not the least due to the fact that his brother was selected third-overall in the 2016 draft. However, Bosa delivered and then some, earning Big Ten defensive lineman of the year honors on a unit which featured three draft picks this year. Some analysts are already projecting Bosa as the top pick in 2019.

H-back Parris Campbell, who is coming back to Ohio State for his senior season, also has potential first-round talent, with one mock draft picking him to go 31st-overall. Credited as one of the fastest players on the team, Campbell could be a game changing type of player at the next level. He is also joined by a host of other draft-eligible receivers, including Johnnie Dixon, Austin Mack, Binjimen Victor and K.J. Hill.

Defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones opted to return to Columbus for his redshirt junior season, despite being listed as a possible first-round selection in the 2018 draft. Urban Meyer had high praise for Jones’ spring practice, stating, “The guy probably that has probably had the best spring of anybody on our team this spring is Dre’Mont Jones.”

Finally, and unsurprisingly, Kendall Sheffield could be the next in line of first-round talent at defensive back. Like Bosa, Sheffield came to Columbus as a five-star recruit. The corner continued to improve throughout the 2017 season, and new cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson praised Sheffield’s effort in spring practice in improving his technique.

“I’m telling you here today, 212 days from now, your Michigan Wolverines team will go down to Columbus, march into that stadium and we will beat you know who to bring back that familiar feeling of victory back to the University of Michigan again.”

-Charles Woodson, via Barrett Sallee, CBS Sports

A former Michigan great had some fighting words for his collegiate rivals over the weekend. Heisman Trophy winner and future hall of fame defensive back Charles Woodson spoke at Michigan’s commencement Saturday and pronounced that, come this fall, Michigan will break its six-year losing streak to Ohio State in Columbus. Woodson never mentioned Ohio State by name, but referred to the team as “you know who” in what probably was not actually--but could have been--a veiled reference to Harry Potter’s arch nemesis, Voldemort.

The recent trend of the rivalry has to be painful to Woodson, an Ohio native, who went 3-0 against Ohio State while playing at Michigan from 1995-97. Woodson starred on both offense and defense and was a standout on special teams, returning a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown in 1997 which all but locked up the Heisman. In his speech, Woodson referenced former Heisman winner Desmond Howard, also a native of Ohio, who managed a similar punt return against the Buckeyes in 1991. Woodson wound up being selected fourth-overall by the Oakland Raiders in the 1998 NFL Draft. The all-around player stated that the fact the senior class at Michigan graduated without beating Ohio State “hurts my heart.”

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh was at the helm of the Wolverines for the rivals’ three most recent matchups. Meanwhile, in Columbus, Urban Meyer holds a sterling 6-0 record against TTUN. Heading back to the days of Jim Tressel, Ohio State has won 13 of the last 14 matchups, the only loss coming in Luke Fickell’s interim head coaching year. The Buckeyes took the most recent iteration of The Game 31-20 in Ann Arbor, rallying after going down 14 in the first half.

In other recent rivalry history, the spot was good.
