Only Wake Forest stands in the way of a Buckeye national title in tennis.

The third-seeded Men’s Tennis Buckeyes won a convincing, and extremely long, match over the second-seeded UCLA Bruins, 4-1, in yesterday’s NCAA Men’s semifinals.

Starting the match all three doubles matches were incredibly close, with each match trading breaks—and no one able to gain the upper hand. UCLA finally was able to take a lead in the best-of-three doubles point with Martin Redlicke and Evan Zhu taking down Ohio State’s Martin Joyce and JJ Wolf in a narrow 7-5 victory.

The remaining two deciding matches were just about as close as one could be, with both going to best-of-seven tiebreaks after being tied 6-6. Just minutes apart Ohio State captured the crucial doubles point with 7-6(4) and 7-6(3) wins in tiebreakers by Mikael Torpegaard/John McNally over Keegan Smith/Austin Rapp, and by Matt Mendez/Hunter Tubert over Maxime Cressy/Bryce Pereira.

With the momentum from the nail-biting doubles point win in hand, the singles matches started—but momentum was derailed by mother nature. With the games just starting, thunderstorm and lightning in the area delayed the match for over three hours, with Ohio State needing to take 3 of the 6 singles matches to advance.

After the first delay Ohio State and UCLA were very even, with each side taking the first set in three matches, and with Ohio State’s No. 6 ranked Torpegaard going to a third set with UCLA’s No. 1 ranked Redlicke. It was shaping up to be a thrilling finish when lightning once again entered the area and delayed the rest of the match for another hour.

Shortly after the second restart UCLA tied the overall score 1-1, with their Connor Hance finishing off his match against Hunter Tubert with a 7-5, 6-3 win and Tubert’s second straight singles loss. The match would not stay tied for long though with Torpegaard having consecutive breaks to close out his huge match, and upset 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Needing only two more wins the Buckeyes seemed to be in great position, but dropped the second set in two of the remaining matches and had dropped the first set in the other two. The third set for these matches proved make or break and the Buckeyes showed they were up to the task late.

Kyle Seelig in the No. 4 singles spot quickly posted his 10th straight win with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Logan Staggs. This left Ohio State needing only one more singles victory out of three with a commanding 3-1 lead in the match.

Just a few minutes after Seelig’s win the Buckeyes finished it out, courtesy of Martin Joyce with a huge 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Maxime Cressy.

Region Rookie of Year honors for Fukuda

On the women’s side of tennis, a Buckeye brought home some honors. Shiori Fukuda received the ITA Midwest Region Rookie of the Year accolade on Monday afternoon. The Midwest Region RoY is just another trophy to put on the shelf for Fukuda, a native of Tokyo. Already she has captured B1G Freshman of the Year, been named as an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete, and picked as a First Team All-Big Ten selection. The last honor being by unanimous decision.

Ranked as No. 101, Fukuda compiled a 23-10 singles record and a 15-3 doubles record. She climbed as high as No. 43 in the rankings this past season, and ended the season with just one loss in her final 13 matches.

Fukuda becomes the third Buckeye in the last five seasons to bring home the award. Even numbered years seem like good omens for the Bucks and this honor, as Gabriella De Santi took home RoY in 2014, and Francesca Di Lorenzo received the same award in 2016.

Emergence of Connor Curlis gives Ohio State baseball a true ace

curlis.0.jpg

The junior lefty has developed into the frontline starter the Buckeyes needed.

It was St. Patrick’s Day in 2016, and instead of drinking green beer at an Irish pub in downtown Cleveland, I was soaking up some sun 2,000 miles away. Sitting in the stands of Goodyear Ballpark to take in a spring training game between the Tribe and Reds, I found myself surrounded by snowbird Ohioans seeking refuge from what had seemed to be a never-ending winter.

Case in point was the gray-haired couple sitting to my right. I’ve long forgotten their names, but I remember they said they were from Findlay, Ohio. And I remember the name they asked me about when, in the course of our chatting, it came up that I wrote about the Ohio State baseball team here at Land-Grant Holy Land: Connor Curlis.

At the time, Curlis, who had starred at Findlay High School, was a freshman for the Buckeyes. The left-hander saw little action for a team that went on to win the Big Ten tournament and secure a spot in an NCAA regional. Still, I tucked his name away in my mind, along with the memory of that day in Arizona and the kindly old couple I spent a few innings talking with.

Fast forward to today, and what we have seen from Curlis is exactly the type of development every coach hopes for when they bring a young man into their program. After making just four relief appearances as a freshman, the southpaw appeared in 20 games (eight starts) as a sophomore a season ago, showing flashes of the talent that brought him to Ohio State in the first place. Curlis won a team-high five games for a 2017 Buckeye squad that endured a disappointing 22-34 campaign.

So Curlis went into the summer knowing his teammates would be counting on him to shoulder a larger load in 2018, and to do so with consistency. What he didn’t know at the time was that the summer would put him into position to emerge as the ace of Ohio State’s starting staff.

Playing for the Champion City Kings of the Prospect League, Curlis had a memorable run, going 2-3 with a 2.63 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP, striking out 82 in 58 innings of work. Most impressive, though, was a three-start stretch in which he allowed just two earned runs in 19.2 innings, striking out 35. In the last of those three performances, he tied the Prospect League record with 16 punchouts.

curlis1.jpg
Champion City Kings

“He opened some eyes,” Rick White, his summer league coach, told Press Pros Magazine. “Suddenly Connor Curlis was on the radar of scouts who came to see him pitch.”

Riding that momentum, he put together a solid fall ball season, including a “Cy Young”-winning performance in the Scarlet and Gray Series. A year’s worth of development had turned Curlis not just into a member of the weekend rotation, but the Friday night starter’s role, one reserved for the unit’s top arm.

“From the time I saw him in high school until now, the thing I’ve liked about Connor is his willingness to compete,” head coach Greg Beals said prior to the start of the season. “He’s gotten steadily better along the way, and with the summer he had after last season – and with what he showed in fall baseball – there’s no reason that he can’t come on this year and have his best year as a Buckeye.”

At the outset of the season, Curlis ranked as the No. 21 prospect for 2018 in the Big Ten by Perfect Game.

And throughout this resurgent season for the Buckeyes, Curlis has acted the part, racking up a 7-3 record, posting a 3.59 ERA, and notching 2.5 strikeouts for every walk surrendered, all while limiting opposing bats to a .260 batting average in 77.2 innings. He has been a workhorse for Beals, and along with fellow-junior Ryan Feltner, has given the club a potent 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation.

As Big Ten baseball site 10 Innings wrote of Curlis, “[He] has ran with the role of weekend ace. But the title means less to him, it’s more what he can do to set the tone for the weekend.”

“It feels awesome to have the coaches tell you that you’re the Friday starter, but more it’s to go out there and give it your all for the team,” Curlis said. “Every Friday night, that’s what I’m trying to do.”

With the Big Ten tournament beginning Wednesday, and a strong chance for an NCAA regional berth upcoming, Ohio State is going to need Curlis to do just that; compete, be the ace, and set the tone.

The Buckeyes continue to try to add a tight end to its 2019 recruiting class; and the basketball Buckeyes hope to earn a commitment later today.

Recruiting never stops for the Ohio State Buckeyes football program. Urban Meyer knows that the way to achieve prolonged success in the college football landscape starts with recruiting.

In order to continuously bring in top-rated recruiting classes, coaches must build strong relationships with the top high school talents in the country, along with their families. Going along with this, Meyer is one of the best in the world at recognizing talent early in a kids recruitment, which gives the program a head start.

Ohio State was at it again Monday as the program offered an up-and-coming tight end in the 2019 recruiting class.

Three star TE Jalen Wydermyer (Dickinson, TX / Dickinson) took to Twitter Monday afternoon to announce that he is the latest member of this year’s recruiting class to receive an offer to Ohio State.

Truly blessed to receive my 21st D1 offer from Ohio State University pic.twitter.com/oF46A1ZS78

— Jalenwydermyer (@Wydermyer81) May 21, 2018

Wydermyer is the 13th tight end in this year’s class to receive an offer from the Buckeyes, joining the likes of four-stars Hudson Henry, Keon Zipperer, Jahleel Billingsley and Ethan Rae.

Wydermyer is a three-star prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and he is the No. 17 TE in the country. While these rankings may seem low for a prospect on Ohio State’s radar, Wydermyer has had a busy year receiving offers from the likes of Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, Florida, Texas A&M, Nebraska and Minnesota.

Wydermyer has started to take some unofficial visits but has yet to take any officials. Expect the Buckeyes to try and ride the wave for tight ends this year but if the above names start committing elsewhere, Wydermyer could become a priority for the Buckeyes.

4-star PF to commit today

Later today, one of the top prospects will announce where he will play college basketball.

Ohio State already earned a commitment from one of the top forwards in the 2019 recruiting cycle when Alonzo Gaffney pledged his services to the University in April. Adding another elite forward to the class would instantly set up Chris Holtmann and the Buckeyes to bring in one of the best classes in the country.

Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, it appears that four-star power forward Romeo Weems (New Haven, MI / New Haven) will look elsewhere to continue his basketball career.

While Weems did include Ohio State in his top five schools this past weekend, it would be surprising if he were to chooses the Buckeyes later today. Michigan State has long been viewed as the leader in his commitment, but DePaul has been trending in his direction ever since he announced he would be making a decision.

Final 5 Decision coming Tuesday May 22 pic.twitter.com/j4RhE7A4T9

— Romeo Weems (@romeo_weems_0) May 19, 2018

One of the most dominant players on the court in this year’s class, the 247Sports Composite Rankings has Weems listed as the No. 7 PF in the country and the No. 37 overall prospect despite position. Again, Ohio State is a long shot in this, but Holtmann has established himself as one of the top recruiters in college basketball.

Weems will be announcing his decision at 4 p.m, ET on his personal Instagram.

The Buckeyes are once again projected to have a top-five finish in 2018.

“The Buckeyes lose some key members from last year’s team that claimed the Big Ten title, but the conference title still runs through Columbus in 2018.”

-Steven Lassan, Athlon Sports

The top teams in the college football universe have remained remarkably consistent in recent years, especially with the advent of the College Football Playoff in 2014. In the four playoffs since, four teams have made the four-team pool on multiple occasions. Alabama has earned a bid all four years, Clemson three and Ohio State and Oklahoma two apiece.

All four of those teams look to comeback strong in 2018, according to Athlon Sports’ rankings of the top-25 teams in college football, which projects the final standings after the season rather than a preseason ranking.

Ohio State is expected to repeat as Big Ten champions, despite a tough road schedule which includes matchups against Penn State (No. 11 in Athlon’s rankings) and Michigan State (No. 12). Obviously, they’ll face a final test for Big Ten East supremacy versus Michigan (No. 5) Nov. 24 in Columbus.

Still, the Buckeyes will enter the season having incurred significant losses in the spring. Seven players were taken in the NFL Draft this year, including cornerback Denzel Ward and center Billy Price in the first round. And while he was not drafted, quarterback J.T. Barrett--who started for Ohio State since the CFP began in 2014--has also moved on to the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Saints. Per the usual when it comes to Urban Meyer squads, however, the Buckeyes have already shown that they are able to reload at most critical positions, headlined by Dwayne Haskins at quarterback.

Alabama remains No. 1 in Athlon’s rankings after becoming the first team since the start of the BCS era (1998) to win back-to-back titles. Clemson comes in at No. 2, again, as one of the most consistent teams in recent memory. Georgia, under third-year head coach Kirby Smart, sits at No. 3, and will once again have to contend with Alabama for a shot at the SEC title.

Behind Ohio State sits a heavy Big Ten contingent in the top-15. In addition to Michigan, Penn State and Michigan State, Wisconsin came in at No. 9 in the rankings as the top team in the Big Ten West.

“We’re going to (South) Africa. We’re going to Johannesburg and Cape Town and we’re going to do a safari. How about that? How about a safari?”

-Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, via Nick Baumgardner, Detroit Free Press

Jim Harbaugh has made international travel a regular thing since his arrival in Ann Arbor, perhaps traversing the world for a way to beat Ohio State. First, he took the entire Michigan football squad to Italy in 2017 (when Harbaugh met the Pope), with the entirety of the $800,000 bill covered by donors Bobby Kotick. Last month, Harbaugh took his squad around France for seven days, including stops in Paris and Normandy, with the trip co-funded by Kotick and Don Graham. Both Kotick and Graham are Michigan alums. In 2016, the head coach had also taken his team to IMG Academy in Florida.

The world tour is set to continue next year, as Harbaugh announced a trip to South Africa. Harbaugh had been debating between such sites as Greece, Cuba and Spain, but the chance for a safari and shark-watching in Cape Town ultimately won out, despite the 17-hour flight from the U.S.

While the trip to Rome did involve some football practices, the trip to France seemed to be more cultural in nature and featured no football. The trips are optional, so the team chose to conduct its 15 spring practices in Ann Arbor this year. Instead, Harbaugh described the trips as “a great learning experience, a great team bonding experience” for his unit. The international travel does comply with NCAA regulations, according to Harbaugh, as the trips are not conducted during spring break and are planned to begin instead at the end of term. Players also get the month of May off after returning from the trip to allow for pursuit of other opportunities, such as study abroad or internships. However, the coaching staff did conduct a clinic in Paris during the trip this spring as a way to bring college football to an international audience.

“To be quite honest I really feel like over the years, in recent years, there hasn’t been the emphasis that I’m used to being put on that game. Every game has been out on the same level of that game and that’s not the way we were brought up, that’s not the way we were raised around here.”

-Charles Woodson, via Bryan Fischer, NBC Sports

Former Michigan star Charles Woodson has been quite outspoken this offseason regarding his alma mater’s rivalry with Ohio State, focusing on Michigan’s need to turn things around in what has been a lopsided competition in recent years. Last month, at Michigan’s spring commencement ceremony, Woodson guaranteed a Michigan win over the Buckeyes when the teams square off in November. He also acknowledged that the fact the senior class graduated without beating Ohio State “hurts my heart.” Woodson also addressed the Wolverines last season prior to their matchup with Ohio State as he tried to fire them up for the rivalry game.

Most recently, at the ChadTough Gala this past weekend, Woodson said that he feels that his former team has not put enough “emphasis” on the game with their rivals, perhaps contributing to the fact that Michigan has not beaten Ohio State since 2011 and only won twice since 2001. “We had no shame in saying (we were going to beat Ohio State),” Woodson said. “And every time I watch our team in recent years, it’s ‘oh, it’s another game.’ It’s not.”

Woodson was clear that it isn’t a lack of talent or good coaching keeping Michigan from winning, but not being able to finish. “In my opinion, it’s the focus you put on that game that allows you to finish,” he said. “We’ve got to get back to that.”

The Buckeyes are riding a six-game winning streak in the rivalry, dating back to Urban Meyer’s first season as head coach. On the flip side, Jim Harbaugh is 0-3 against the Buckeyes. The rivalry has certainly been one-sided in recent years--a far cry from what Woodson, an Ohio native himself, experienced when he was playing in Ann Arbor. Woodson, a Heisman Trophy winner, went 3-0 against Ohio State from 1995-97 before going on to an outstanding NFL career. The future Hall of Fame defensive back played both ways in college while also starring on special teams.

The Buckeyes will hit the court again on Monday as they look to best UCLA and claim a spot in the championship.

The Ohio State men’s tennis team won a nail-biter against Mississippi State 4-3 to advance to the NCAA semifinals against UCLA — which will get underway Monday, May 21 at 2 p.m. ET.

The big story of the quarterfinals game was the comeback by the Buckeyes, who dropped the doubles point for the first time in 20 straight matches, to fall behind 1-0. After Ohio State’s Hunter Tobert dropped in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) to Mississippi State’s Trevor Foshey, Ohio State was down 2-0 and needed to take 4 of the remaining 5 matches to advance.

The Buckeyes tied the match 2-2 after successive victories by No. 112-ranked Martin Joyce, who was dominant in a 7-5, 6-1 defeat of Florian Boska, and by No. 92 John McNally, who was able to defeat higher seeded No. 84 Stranhinja Rakic 6-4, 6-3. Both were solid victories with strong second sets, showcasing the incredible depth of Ohio State’s lineup.

Despite the two strong victories to tie things up, the match became way more dicey for the Buckeyes when No. 41 J.J. Wolf — who has had a fantastic sophomore campaign — dropped 6-4, 6-3 to MSU’s No. 23 Giovanni Ordini.

Shortly after that match concluded though, Ohio State once again tied things up with No. 96 Kyle Seelig’s 6-1, 7-6(5) defeat of Niclaus Braun. This victory came right as the second set on Court 1 between Ohio State’s No. 6 Mikael Torpegaard and MSU’s No. 2 Nuno Borges was ending, setting up their third set to be the decision-maker for their match and the match-at-large.

The pair split the first two sets, with Torpegaard taking the first 6-4 and Borges taking the second 3-6. Torpregaard through quickly gained momentum, breaking Borges in the second game and holding to go up 3-1. After that, his strong serve and decisive second break carried him the rest of the way to an almost easy 6-1 third set victory capped with an incredible match-point ace.

The victory handed Ohio State the narrow 4-3 win and sets them up to face second-seeded UCLA in the national semifinals Monday at 2 p.m. ET. The match will be a tough one for the Buckeyes, but they will look to pull off the upset and avoid a second straight semifinal loss.

More good news came post-match for the Buckeyes, as two Ohio State tennis players, and Coach Ty Tucker, received ITA Midwest awards. The Buckeyes’ No. 1, Mikhael Torpegaard was honored with the ITA Midwest Senior Player of the Year Award while No. 3 John McNally was named the ITA Midwest Rookie Player of the Year.

In addition, Coach Ty Tucker won his seventh ITA Midwest Coach of the Year award after guiding the Buckeyes to another fantastic season and a 13th straight Big Ten Title.

Make sure to continue to follow the Buckeyes today as they take on the Bruins for a spot in the National Championship on Tuesday, May 22.
