The Buckeyes’ gritty efforts in Omaha ended with an 8-1 loss to Minnesota.

Hopes of a second Big Ten tournament title in three seasons ended for Ohio State baseball on Saturday in Omaha. The Buckeyes were eliminated by top-seeded Minnesota, 8-1, due in large part to one sloppy inning.

Minnesota came in as one of the hottest teams in all of college baseball, ranked 11th in the country by both Baseball America and D1 Baseball, a squad with seven All-Big Ten honorees, including three on the first-team. This is a strong, balanced club that will almost assuredly be hosting an NCAA regional.

The Gophers had some struggles getting hits with runners on base early in the contest, but their long lineup proved too much, wearing down Ohio State and using a six-run sixth inning to cruise to victory. Buckeye pitchers gave up four hits and walked four in that inning, with an error also contributing to the troubles.

Ohio State entered the game sitting at No. 34 in the country in RPI, which should put the team comfortably into an NCAA regional. The Buckeyes jumped six spots after their win against Michigan on Friday, and two places total in the past week. The loss to the Gophers should not result in too large of a hit to that positioning.

With the three members of the weekend rotation having already been spent, head coach Greg Beals turned to redshirt senior swingman Yianni Pavlopoulos on the bump. The righty made his fifth start of the year, and 17th appearance overall. The last time the Homer Glen, Illinois, product stepped onto the mound at TD Ameritrade Park, he picked up the win in relief as the Buckeyes captured the tournament title in 2016.

This time Pavlopoulos walked a fine line, fighting command issues but escaping several jams. The traffic on the bases caught up to him, though, as he departed with the bases loaded and nobody out in the fourth inning. One of those runners would come around to score, giving Pavlopoulos a line of one run allowed in 3-plus innings of work, yielding five hits and walking three while striking out a pair in a no decision.

Minnesota countered with right-hander Patrick Fredricksen on the mound, the Big Ten’s Pitcher and Freshman of the Year. The 6-foot-6 Gig Harbor, Washington, native, who went 8-0 with a 1.80 earned run average during the regular season, performed as advertised, giving up just one run on two hits, with two walks, a hit batsman, and one strikeout while tossing six innings for the win.

Ohio State left fielder Tyler Cowles continued his quest for All-Tournament team accolades, hitting a home run and walking twice. For the tourney as whole, the senior went 5-for-13 at the plate, with three doubles, one longball, three walks, and six runs batted in.

The recurring theme for Ohio State this week has been grabbing the early lead, and today’s game was no different. With two down in the bottom of the first, Cowles pulled his hands in on a hanging breaking ball on the inner half of the plate and launched a long drive down the left field line. The ball connected with the foul pole, and the Buckeyes jumped out to a 1-0 advantage.

Unfortunately for the Scarlet and Gray, though, it would be all the scoring the team would muster.

As mentioned, the Gophers put constant pressure on Ohio State’s pitching and defense, and finally broke through in the fourth. After Pavlopoulos loaded the bases with nobody out, a sacrifice fly by Toby Hanson tied the game. Freshman Griffan Smith snuffed out the threat without further damage, getting another fly ball out and a strikeout to end the inning.

Fredricksen settled in after the first inning homer, stifling the Buckeyes’ bats by allowing just four baserunners the rest of the way. Pitching to contact and utilizing his sinker-slider mix to keep the ball predominantly on the ground, he needed a mere 77 pitches to get through six frames.

In the sixth, Minnesota blew things open. After stranding nine runners through the first five innings, a walk to Jordan Kozicky and a triple by Hanson over the head of Dillon Dingler in center field made it a 2-1 ballgame. Luke Petteren followed with a single to plate Hanson and end Smith’s appearance after two innings of work.

Kyle Michalik relieved and couldn’t stop the bleeding. A fielder’s choice and a pair of walks loaded the bases, and a single by Cole McDevitt plated two more runs, making it a 5-1 Gopher advantage. Beals was forced to go back to the bullpen, but Andrew Magno came on and issued a walk to reload the bases, and after yet another pitching change, Curtiss Irving yielded a two-run single to Kozicky.

Alex Boxwell was thrown out at third by Cowles on the play, but the damage was done. A thirty-one minute, six-run inning made it 7-1 and effectively ended Ohio State’s chances.

The Gophers added another run in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Terrin Vavra, rounding out the 8-1 win, as Jackson Rose and Jeff Fasching shut the door with three scoreless innings combined out of the bullpen. Minnesota, which has now won eight in a row and 12 of its last 13, advanced to the tournament final on Sunday with its 40th win of 2018.

Ohio State will now await its NCAA tournament fate. The field of 64 will be announced on Monday at 12 p.m. ET live on ESPNU.

The Buckeyes stayed alive and sent their rivals home.

For the second straight day, the Ohio State baseball team staved off elimination in the Big Ten tournament. The Buckeyes used a solid pitching performance from Adam Niemeyer and the bullpen, and actually showed some offensive firepower, in knocking off Michigan, 5-3.

After not having met during the Big Ten regular season, it seemed almost predestined that the conference’s two biggest rivals should meet in a game with everything on the line. The three-seed Wolverines are now going home to await their NCAA tournament fate.

Seventh-seeded Ohio State had scored just four total runs in its first two tourney games, and will now play another elimination game on Saturday against Purdue, who sent them down in defeat by a score of 8-2 in Wednesday’s opener.

“We’ve got nothing to lose, so we’re just playing loose,” said sophomore Dominic Canzone after the game. “We’re all just coming together. That’s just who we are.”

Niemeyer, the redshirt senior co-captain, took the ball for the first time at TD Ameritrade Park since starting the championship game in 2016. Much as he did that day, the right-hander gave his club a great chance to win, allowing just one run on five hits in five innings. Neimeyer walked one and struck out four to earn the victory.

The Buckeyes’ seniors came through in a big way offensively, as Tyler Cowles, Noah McGowan, and Bo Coolen all produced runs in the victory. Cowles has now driven in five runs in Omaha, making a push for the All-Tournament team.

Junior Kobie Foppe also drove in a run, and Canzone had a multi-hit day and was on base four times, despite dealing with a thigh contusion that has forced him into the designated hitter role.

Now three games into the tournament, Ohio State has scored first in each. In the bottom of the third, Canzone doubled and Foppe singled to give the Buckeyes runners on the corners with one out. Cowles then delivered an RBI double, and McGowan followed with a run-scoring single.

— Ohio State Baseball (@OhioState_BASE) May 25, 2018

Two runs was all they would muster, though. A poor squeeze bunt attempt by Connor Pohl resulting in Cowles being cut down at the plate, and a liner off the bat of Jacob Barnwell snared by pitcher Ben Dragani ended the threat with no further damage.

Michigan would get on the board in fifth against Niemeyer, cutting the Ohio State lead in half. Harrison Salter doubled to lead things off, moved to third on a single by Dominic Clementi, and came home on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Engelmann.

The Buckeyes would get that run back a couple of innings later, though, when Coolen launched a first-pitch fastball into the right field bleachers. It was the first home run of the tournament for the scarlet and gray, as the park plays very big.

Ohio State wasn’t done, either, tacking on another two runs to make it a 5-1 ballgame. Noah West worked a four-pitch walk and Canzone singled and stole a base to put two runners in scoring position with one out. A Foppe single and a sacrifice fly by Cowles brought the two runs home.

Head coach Greg Beals relied on his bullpen to bring the win home, as he’s done all season long. Senior Austin Woodby tossed a scoreless sixth inning before running into some trouble in the seventh, allowing a two-run single to Brock Keener that cut the lead to two.

But Beals went to his relief ace Seth Kinker after Woodby issued a one-out walk in the eighth. Kinker struck out the first two batters he faced to end the frame, then came back in the ninth and worked around a one-out double to retire the side, earning his second multi-inning save in as many days and 15th on the year.

The Buckeyes are still alive for a tournament title, and will now get a shot at revenge against the Boilermakers. More importantly, though, the two wins in Omaha have likely solidified Ohio State’s case for an NCAA regional bid.

Saturday’s first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET, with the game being televised live on Big Ten Network.

So what if they were in the middle of a Big Ten Tournament game ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Ohio State baseball team is working toward a Big Ten Tournament title game, but the guys couldn’t help but have a little fun in the top of the fifth against Michigan on Friday. Up by two runs, the dugout got a little creative while head coach Greg Beals was being interviewed by the Big Ten Network, and it’s hilarious.

As far as videobombing goes, this is pretty A+ work from several different players. Not only do you have some Stonecold and Triple-H action at the beginning, but then the commitment to the team squat in the back really took things to another level.

The Buckeyes are now 3-1 in the B1G tournament after their win over Michigan on Friday and will face Purdue in their bracket finals on Saturday. OSU must beat the Boilermakers twice to advance to the B1G championship game. Regardless of how their title run ends, they should earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. And hopefully we’ll get some more dugout antics when the cameras are on Coach Beals. (Fingers crossed.)

Plus, updates on the $40 million Schumaker Complex and NCAA results for Buckeye rowing and track and field.

“Elsewhere in the Big Ten, Ohio State’s a narrow favorite to beat Penn State in Happy Valley.”

-Alex Kirshner, SB Nation

So, even before training camp officially begins for college football programs throughout the country, the odds for games next season are starting to make their way to the internet. Admittedly, I think it’s way too early to be thinking about Ohio State opening as 9-point favorite over Michigan, when a lot can happen in the weeks leading up to the final regular season game of the year — even if I love being projected to beat TTUN by more than a touchdown.

Some other betting lines to come out include Ohio State at -12 over TCU, -6 over Michigan State, and a narrow -1.5 over Penn State. Vegas having faith in the Buckeyes is nothing new, but they also have Michigan (-3.5) over Penn State, and Michigan State (-1) over Michigan.

So, while it’s a little too early to know if any of these lines even make sense, it’s seems safe to say that the competition at the top of the Big Ten East could get very interesting as the season progresses. Ohio State will go into fall with a firmly entrenched starting QB, now that Joe Burrow made his decision to transfer, but still have a long way to go before the still fairly-green Dwayne Haskins is ready to carry the team on his shoulders.

The new Schumaker Student-Athlete Development Complex is expected to open on October 25, 2018 and will be connected to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center off of Olentangy River Road. Ohio State demolished the Biggs facility in order to build a bigger, centralized location for several Buckeye programs.

The facility will be the new home for seven sports: Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Softball, Rowing and Field Hockey.

The new SSADC (Is this what we’re going to call it? Or maybe just The Schumaker?) will feature training facilities, strength and conditioning rooms — which are all windowed, allowing the athletes to take in the fields around them while they hit the weights —, lockers rooms, and lounges.

Speaking of the Rowing team...

Heading into the NCAA Championship weekend, the Buckeyes were ranked No. 3 in the CRCA/US Rowing Coaches poll with 422 points, behind Washington and California with 499 and 456 points, respectively.

For the First Varsity Eight event on Friday, the Buckeyes were ranked No. 5 and were set to compete in Heat 4 against UCF, Wisconsin, Texas, Brown and Rhode Island. Ohio State ended up finishing No. 2, clocking a 6:27.62 finish behind Texas, and earning a automatic spot in the 1V8 A/B Semi-Finals on Saturday morning.

The first heat for the Buckeyes in the IIV8 didn’t quite go as well as the rest of the morning races, with Ohio State finishing third (6:37.54) against the likes of Michigan, UCF, Yale, Brown, and Navy, forcing them to wait until late-afternoon for their last chance to qualify for a spot in the Semi-Finals, Friday evening at 6:26 p.m. ET.

In the Fours race, the Buckeyes were the No. 1 seed in Heat 3, and were lined up against Navy, Indiana, Yale, Iowa, and Jacksonville. The Buckeyes started off holding the third place spot for the first 500m of the race — behind Iowa and Yale —, but Ohio State quickly pulled ahead and finished the heat in first place (7:15.87). Once the Buckeyes made their move, they didn’t slow down, and continued being a “freight train” (as described by the event’s announcer) through the finish.

With an automatic bid to the Varsity Four A/B Semi-Finals on Saturday, the Buckeyes have an opportunity to add some points to the overall team score as well.

“The Ohio State track & field team got down to business on the first day of the NCAA East Preliminaries on Thursday held at the USF Track & Field Stadium in Tampa, Fla.”

-Ohio State Athletics

Yesterday was the first day for the Buckeye men’s and women’s track and field athletes to attempt to earn spots in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. On Thursday, three Buckeyes earned tickets to Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon for the title run; Cole Gorski (pole vault), Zack Bazile (long jump), and Christine Frederick (10,000m).

After Thursday’s initial races and events, several more Buckeyes qualified to compete in the regional finals throughout the remainder of the weekend. Bazile will be going to the Championships regardless, but he did not qualify on Friday in the men’s 100 meter event.

Friday saw a host of first round runs and regional final events, with another Buckeye, senior Maggie Barrie (400m), punching her ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and four more Ohio State athletes qualifying for the regional final in their respective events on Saturday.

— Ohio State T&F/XC (@OhioState_TFXC) May 25, 2018

Tomorrow, looking to advance to the NCAA Championships, will be Chantel Ray (110m hurdles) and Avania Battle (200m), along with two Buckeyes advancing in the men’s 200 meter event, Eric Harrison Jr. and Nick Gray. Harrison set a personal best in his qualifying run of 20.27, and Gray ran a season-best 20.51, on his way to the finals.

So far, Ohio State has four athletes for sure heading to Eugene, Oregon for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, but there are plenty more that have the opportunity to join them with solid finishes in their respective regional finals over the weekend.

Here’s a LINK to the live results.

If you haven’t heard yet — ad nauseam —, Ohio State has a reputation as DBU, and with first-round draft picks year-after-year, it should be no surprise that the secondary, along with the Buckeye defense, is often the best in the country. This has been particularly true under Urban Meyer, and the video above illustrates exactly why that is.

The Ohio State defense isn’t just focused on stopping other teams, but also in capitalizing on any scoring opportunities they might get as well. There’s a good group of guys looking to continue that tradition in the 2018 season, with Kendall Sheffield emerging as the new leader in the secondary, and ready to work with Damon Arnette and Jordan Fuller to continue the now-legendary reputation of their position group.

Urban Meyer tweeted out a video on Friday showing former Ohio State football player Zach Boren speaking to the team about the commitment that he and his teammates had to the university, and to each other, heading into the 2012 season.
