The Wide Receiver room at Ohio State is arguably one of the deepest and the most talented positional groups on the roster. It boasts an impressive collection of high four-star players, a few five-stars and a lot of underrated three-star athletes and players that have found the position that suits their skills. Former WR coach Zach Smith had quite the hauls prior to his departure, but now former player and now Coach Brian Hartline is looking to improve the quality and the production of players in his room in 2019 and beyond.

Fast forward to the 2019 season, after losing not one, not two, but three team captains at the wide receiver position in Johnnie Dixon, Terry Mclaurin and Parris Campbell–how would this team fare without that leadership element from the more seasoned members of the team? It is truly a deep void to fill, but all is not lost this season because there are trio capable members that could grow into the leaders this offseason in K.J. Hill, Austin Mack, and Binjimen Victor.

Early on, the had to grow with and under the wings of the three that have recently departed for the NFL, but this year they will be leading the charge. Hill, a fifth-year senior has the most experience and he even turned down an NFL shot in favor of being “the go-to guy” at Ohio State and to possibly grab a few records in his last season in the Scarlet and Gray.

Both Austin Mack and Binjimen Victor are returning for their senior seasons at Ohio State and they will try to go out with a bang. Mack was seriously hurt following the Purdue loss and he will look for a bounce-back type of season without the help of his former roommate Dwayne Haskins. He will take the field with Justin Fields or Gunnar Hoak so there is a lot of work to do with new signal-callers on the roster.

With Victor, he had an up and down season, but he turned it on late into the season with a spectacular game-saving grab and a little RAC to set-up Hill’s game-winning TD to stun Happy Valley in another thriller to the rivalry. Victor among the three potential leaders in the room is the least vocal player in the room, look for him to develop more as a vocal leader through the offseason and well into the season.

Behind the next big three are a slew of talented and yet forgotten prized recruits that could shine in limited action. The players that immediately come to mind are Elijah Gardiner and Jaylen Harris, two big-bodied receivers that have been waiting for their time to shine. Then there is the legend himself Chris Olave and incoming five-star signee Garrett Wilson, who just barely scratched the surface of their potentials. Close behind them are Kamryn Babb and Cameron Brown, who are all speed burners. Unfortunately, Babb suffered another major injury, but the staff can turn his situation into another feel good, Dixon-like story (which would be awesome!), so keep fighting kid!

After that is a collection of walk-ons with C.J. Saunders leading after defeating the odds. Even after losing Blue Smith and Garyn Prater to Cincinnati, the walk-ons are still good players. Alec Koch, Austin Kutscher, De’Shawn White, and Sam Wiglusz. There is also Craig Young, who was recruited as an Athlete, so you never know if he will break through and earn some reps at receiver.

Looking into the future, the 2020 receiver group is headlined with another five-star stud in Fleming, who is the #1 at his position in the nation. Scott Jr and Smith-Njigba are also no slouches either. The 2020 class is looking pretty deep with one or two more possibilities left. The 2021 class has no one committed, but that could change after they added Marvin Harrison Jr’s high school QB, but you never know, but the future is really bright with Hartline leading this groups development.

This is definitely the room that generates the most excitement, especially with the potential of Day’s offensive mind at the helm. This room will have to step up and learn fast, but all signs point to the Zone 6 group kicking it up a notch. Go Bucks!

Projected Depth Chart:

WR 1: Binjimen Victor, Jaylen Harris, Cameron Brown

WR 2: Austin Mack, Garrett Wilson, Elijah Gardiner

Slot: K.J. Hill, Chris Olave, C.J. Saunders

WR 4: Alec Koch, Austin Kutscher, De’Shawn White, Sam Wiglusz

Future WR’s: 2020: Julian Fleming, Gee Scott Jr, Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

The Buckeyes entered the recruiting race for one of the top 2020 prospects from Ohio.

Did you miss out on some the latest news this weekend surrounding Ohio State football recruiting?

Don’t Worry! Land-Grant Holy Land is here to get you caught back up with things.

Buckeyes offer instate tight end

One day after showcasing his talents in front of Ryan Day and the rest of the Ohio State coaching staff at camp on Thursday, Cincinnati Elder class of 2020 tight end Joe Royer, a high school teammate of current OSU verbal pledge Jakob James, now holds an opportunity to suit up on college level in the Scarlet and Gray.

Locking in his scholarship from the Buckeyes on Friday, the 6-foot-5 225-pound three-star prospect adds Ohio State to a offer list that previously consisted of programs such as Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State, West Virginia, and many others.

I am extremely excited to have received an offer from The Ohio State University!! Thank you @OSUCoachKDub and @ryandaytime for this opportunity! Go Bucks‼️ pic.twitter.com/pL3nU689p3

— Joe Royer (@JoeRoyer25) June 7, 2019

More than just a blocker for Elder, Royer has shown big play ability when the football is in his hands. Last season as a junior for the Panthers, he hauled in 32 receptions for over 600 yards and five touchdowns to help pace his squad to an overall record of 8-5.

See what Joe Royer could add to the Buckeyes offense with these highlights of him in action:

Quick Hits

  • Bergen Catholic (NJ) 2020 safety Jordan Morant named his final five on Friday. With plans set to announce his commitment on January 4 2020, Morant will pick from OSU, Michigan, Texas A&M, USC, and Penn State.

Toutant was committed to the Nittany Lions since November 2018.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are anticipating a big summer, as they have tons of high profile visits planned in both June and July, and it looks like the fireworks have started a little earlier than expected on Sunday night. Longtime Penn State tackle commit Grant Toutant shocked the recruiting world, announcing that he was decommitting from the Nittany Lions, and flipping to Ohio State.

— Grant Toutant (@toutant_grant) June 10, 2019

Toutant, currently ranked as the 324th best player in the country (27th OT) by 247Sports, was considered by many to be as solid a commit as they come, visiting Penn State several times over the past few months after his commitment in November. It seems, however, that Ohio State’s new high powered offense was enough to convince the Warren, Mich., prospect to reconsider.

Toutant is the fifth offensive lineman to join Ohio State’s 2020 class already, along with Paris Johnson Jr, Jakob James, Tre Leroux and Luke Wypler. With those five in, Ohio State may actually be done recruiting the offensive line for the 2020 class, which gives Ryan Day and Greg Studrawa a big head start on the big boys in 2021.

While Studrawa is Toutant’s position coach, Greg Mattison is actually the coach credited for this commitment on 247Sports, which means that those new Michigan ties are already starting to pay off for the Buckeyes.

Toutant’s commitment give Ohio State 11 overall, and moves the Buckeyes up to eighth in the national class rankings, right behind Notre Dame.

LGHL will have more on Toutant’s commitment soon.

They may not be suiting up for Team USA, but there are some Ohio State alumni to root for!

The Women’s World Cup is underway, and while there may not be any Buckeyes on Team U.S.A., there are still three former Ohio State alumni competing for the World’s top prize: Tiffany Cameron (Team Jamaica), Lindsay Agnew — a Dublin, Ohio native — and Nichelle Prince (Team Canada). All three women will be competing in their first World Cup action.

Team Jamaica

The player

Tiffany Cameron played for Ohio State from 2009-2012, and has spent the past seven years since her time in Columbus playing professionally for the National Women’s Soccer League (Seattle Reign and Kansas City), and many teams abroad, currently competing for Stabaek FC in the top league Norway.

She’s previously represented Canada in international competitions, but after a historic qualification by the Reggae Girlz Jamaican team, she’ll play for them this year instead.

Some of Cameron’s accomplishments, according to Ohio State, include:

“An NSCAA second team All-American in 2012, Cameron remains the Buckeyes’ all-time leading goal scorer with 40 and 96 career points. The Mississauga, Ontario, native led the Buckeyes with 21 goals in 2012, shattering the previous school record of 13. A two-time first team All-Big Ten selection, Cameron’s nine game-winning goals in her senior season were the most in the country and her 19 career game-winners tied for fourth-most in Big Ten history. Cameron added five assists in her senior campaign to tally 47 points, also an Ohio State single-season record.”

Team Canada

The Players

Agnew and Prince are fairly recent Buckeye alumni, both playing for Ohio State from 2013-2016. The pair also became the first players in program history to be selected in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Draft, with Agnew going No. 19 overall to the Washington Spirit and Prince going No. 28 to the Houston Dash.

Not only did Agnew and Prince play together at Ohio State, but Agnew was traded to the Dash just a year after being drafted where the duo linked up again, even before being selected to play for Team Canada in the 2019 Women’s World Cup. Prince has a bit more experience on the big stage having won bronze at the Olympics a few years ago with the Canadian team.

According to Kim McCauley at SB Nation, Team Canada will need someone to step and one of the two Buckeyes could fill that need.

“The legendary Christine Sinclair can’t create her own scoring chances very often anymore, but the Reds’ all-time leading scorer has morphed into one of the world’s best advanced playmakers. And if Canada is going to make a deep run, she needs one of her attack partners to start scoring more goals.

Nichelle Prince, Janine Beckie, and Jordyn Huitema have rotated in the striker role for Canada, and none have yet to lock it down. They’re all talented players, but extremely inconsistent finishers. Of the three, Beckie is the safest option, Huitema has the highest ceiling, and Prince is a compromise between the two.”

Lindsay Agnew

Some of Agnew’s accomplishments, according to Ohio State, include:

“The co-captain and 2016 CoSIDA second team Academic All-American concluded her career fourth in program history with 19 assists, tied for 13th with 55 career points and 15th with 17 career goals. Agnew was a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, a three-time Academic All-Big Ten pick, a 2016 second team NSCAA Scholar All-East Region selection, a 2015 and 2016 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.”

Nichelle Prince

Some of Prince’s accomplishments, according to Ohio State, include:

“Prince, an Ajax, Ontario, native, was a 2016 second team All-Big Ten pick while finishing third on the team with five goals and ranking second with five assists and 15 points after missing the first two matches of the season while earning a bronze medal representing Canada at the Olympics. Prince, a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and OSU Scholar-Athlete, scored game-winning goals against Texas and at Michigan, while assisting on two other game-winners this season. She is fourth on the Buckeyes’ career assist list with 20, sixth with 74 career points and tied for eighth with 27 career goals.”
