Buckeye business owners

I’m not sure how many of you are looking to get a PPP loan to help you get through this. If you are, and like me have been frustrated with dealing with larger banks and their black hole of no information I may be able to help.

We filed an application through the PNC portal last Saturday after it opened. We provided all documentation up front to complete the loan process. Black hole. No communication. No response to calls. No response to emails. Nothing. Like many small businesses across the country our business is down. Way down. So I decided to do something about it.

Today I connected with a small bank in south Texas. I dealt with the president of the bank directly. I submitted my application with him. I was just hoping to get an SBA loan number and get the ball rolling. Instead in less than two hours I got a full loan approval for a PPP loan.

If any of you are dealing with similar frustrations send me an email at [email protected] and I’ll put you in touch with Robert. You will deal directly with the president of the bank and he will take care of you. He’s earned me as a customer for life.

2020-2021 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

Lundardi projects Ohio State as 5 seed in 2021 NCAA Tournament

The country as a whole, and specifically the college basketball world, was robbed of the 2020 NCAA Tournament by the coronavirus pandemic that swept the nation just days before the tournament's field was to be announced. The cancelation of the NCAA Tournament was unprecedented and its effects will likely be felt beyond this year.

And while teams across the country were impacted by not taking part in the Big Dance, some were affected more than others. One of those teams that could have benefitted the most from taking part in the NCAA Tournament was Ohio State.

The Buckeyes finished the regular season winners of nine of their last 12 games, including three ranked victories -- teams that were surely going dancing -- in their last five contests. The Scarlet and Gray were also poised to get back forward Kyle Young, the all-hustle, do-everything junior, who missed the final four contests of the regular season. Had the Tournament been played, Ohio State was poised to make a run and where they ended up was anyone's guess.

Fortunately, the NCAA Tournament happens every year and we expect that at the end of next season, there will be postseason play. And while that is a year away, and there remains a full offseason and regular season to be played before we get there, it's never too early to look ahead, especially if you're ESPN's Joe Lundardi. The college basketball expert released his "Way-Too-Early March Madness bracket for 2021, Version 1" this week and you should not be surprised to find the Buckeyes back in the Big Dance.

Despite the flurry of recent turnover within the Scarlet and Gray program, Lunardi projects Ohio State to be a No. 5 seed come the 2021 NCAA Tournament, the same seeding he predicted for the 2020 Buckeyes.

There certainly is uncertainty when it comes to the 2020-21 season for the Scarlet and Gray. Junior center Kaleb Wesson, Ohio State's leading scorer and rebounder last year, declared for the 2020 NBA Draft and said he plans to hire an agent. While NCAA rules permit Wesson to return to college after working out for teams if he chooses, that does not seem like that is in the cards for the Columbus native. This means the Buckeyes must replace a 6-foot-9, 270-pound big man who could score in the paint, shoot from the outside (42.5 percent from three-point range last year) and defend.

In addition, the Scarlet and Gray's lone scholarship senior, Andre Wesson, graduated. Freshman point guard DJ Carton and sophomore guard Luther Muhammad both elected to transfer and freshman Alonzo Gaffney left the program after one year, likely to test the professional waters. In these departures, Ohio State loses a veteran leader, two very good defenders, a freshman who showed a lot of promise before missing the final 11 games of the season and another freshman who the team hoped to groom into an effective player.

But it hasn't been all losses for the Buckeyes since the season abruptly ended. The Scarlet and Gray added Harvard graduate transfer Seth Towns, who brings his size and scoring ability from the Ivy League to the Big Ten. Playing with Ohio State, Towns won't have to be the offensive force he was for two years with the Crimson, but he has the ability to put the ball in the basket when needed.

Also, the Buckeyes will add Justice Sueing to the rotation in 2020-21. The former California forward had to sit out last year but brings 14.3 points and six rebounds per game from the West Coast to the Midwest. The Scarlet and Gray will also get Young, who averaged 7.5 points and 5.8 rebounds last season, and junior guard Musa Jallow back from injuries. Both players need to continue to expand their games, but each has a role to play for Ohio State.

And it shouldn't be forgotten the players who performed well for the Buckeyes last season and will return in 2020-21. Guards CJ Walker and Duane Washington each continued to elevate their game, especially once Carton wasn't playing and roles were clearly defined. EJ Liddell emerged as a legitimate option in the paint and will continue to build on a strong end to his freshman season. If Justin Ahrens can continue to develop, the Scarlet and Gray have a ready-made catch-and-shoot player to deploy. Finally, Ohio State has four-star shooting guard Eugene Brown and three-star power forward Zed Key set to enroll this summer, two players the coaching staff is high on.

John B. Eckstorm (Former HC Football 1899 - 1901)

24 Club: John Eckstorm, OSU’s First Great Coach

John Eckstorm might be the best Ohio State coach you’ve never heard of.

There have been 24 head coaches in the history of Ohio State football. Each has a story and legacy. This offseason, Land-Grant Holy Land’s new series 24 Club will help you get to know the coaches from past and present who built the program. Today we look at one of the best coaches in the early days of the program — John Eckstorm.

Name: John Eckstorm
Seasons Coached: Three (1899-1901)
Overall Record: 22-4-3

Where Does He Rank in the 24 Club?
Overall Wins: Tied No. 10 out of 24 OSU Coaches
Winning Percentage: Tied No. 4 out of 24 OSU Coaches

How would you describe the OSU football program entering its tenth season? Well, it wasn’t very good. Heading into 1899, Buckeyes teams had posted only two winning seasons. Poor play and cratering attendance led the athletic department to briefly suspended operations in 1897.

Athletics got up and running again, but things were still on the wrong track. OSU wobbled to a 3-5 season in 1898, which included a 29-0 loss to Kenyon. The Lantern summed up the game, which could have been a summary for many of the team’s games, “the visitors outplayed the varsity at every point.” It was clear that OSU needed a spark. Who better to lead the program than the coach that had dealt OSU one of its worst recent losses? A coach who ran circles around the Buckeyes in game-planning and execution. Ohio State hired Kenyon head coach John Eckstorm.

(Eckstorm) took a program that was accustomed to losing and set the bar at winning championships.

Eckstorm immediately breathed life into the program. OSU breezed through their 1899 schedule — allowing points in only a single game — and finished with a 9-0-1 record. It was Ohio State’s first undefeated season in program history. The Buckeyes also claimed the only championship of the day that mattered — the championship of the Ohio schools. The Lantern summed up Eckstorm’s single-season resurrection of the program:

“The OSU football team has risen from a second rate, second class team, to a first grade first-class team in Western football...As far as Mr. Eckstorm is concerned, he is second to no coach in the United States, and it is to him more than anyone else that the success of the team is due.”

Eckstorm’s teams continued to excel but tragedy struck. Ohio State center John Sigrist died as a result of a freak injury he suffered in a game against Western in 1901. The pain of losing a player was too much — Eckstorm quit after the season ended. Eckstorm told a friend that the season contained more hard luck than all the hard luck he had faced in all his years. Eckstorm was not done coaching though — he would go on to coach at Ohio Medical and Kenyon. He would eventually serve as Chief Medical Officer at the Ohio Penitentiary.

Mack Brown wonders if 2020 college football season could be in jeopardy in wake of COVID-19 pandemic

gettyimages-1171408995-e1567469133707.jpg

The college football season is still months away from kicking off, but the fear that the season could legitimately be in jeopardy could be growing from the coaching community.

“There is a fear of ‘would we have a season?’ ‘Would we have a partial season?’ ‘What does a partial season mean,'” North Carolina head coach Mack Brown said in a report published by The News & Observer in North Carolina on Monday. “There is a great concern because of the remedy that comes in with football.”

Brown, like every other football coach in the country, is currently working through this unique situation that sees football coaches trying to do as much work as possible without the ability to have any close contact with each other and players. The ACC has shut down all spring athletic activities, including spring football practices and games, and every other conference and the NCAA has enacted similar decisions in the interest of the health and safety of as many as possible As a result, the question of when things will return to normal continues to be a mystery to everyone.

“The biggest problem is you’re not sure when it ends, and we can’t get those answers at this point.”

And therein lies the problem. With continued updates from the nation’s top health officials and those beyond the borders beginning to suspect social distancing measures may be recommended for extended periods of time, the scenarios continue to inch close to the start of the college football season. Those concerns have been expressed around the college football world as officials and conferences must look farther down the line to see what can and cannot be done.

Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall has discussed the possibility of the upcoming season not being able to start on time. Playing games in stadiums with no fans is certainly one option, although ADs have been quick to point out the economics of that option don’t exactly add up in anyone’s favor. This is part of the reason why some college football coaches have begun to do their part to spread the word about the urgency of this pandemic, including LSU head coach Ed Orgeron (HERE) and Texas head coach Tom Herman (HERE).

According to NBC News, citing information and data from the World Health Organization, there have been over 35,054 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States, with 448 confirmed deaths as of about 12:30 pm eastern on Monday (those numbers have since been updated and continue to rise).

Week 0 is scheduled for August 29. The clock is ticking.

2020-2021 College Basketball Discussion (Official Thread)

Villanova tops college basketball's Way-Too-Early Top 25 for 2020-21

We're entering an offseason of uncertainty in college basketball. Not only is there trepidation on the part of potential NBA draft early-entrants and athletic directors looking into making coaching changes, but it's also impossible for coaches to go out and recruit the final players in the 2020 class. Moreover, we could see transfer eligibility rules changing in the near future.

In other words, rosters could look dramatically different a few months from now -- or there could be much less turnover than we're used to.

Either way, here's our first guess at the landscape of the 2020-21 season. We're going to constantly update this throughout the offseason as players declare for the draft and transfers and recruits make decisions. The most likely outcome in terms of early-entry players is factored into the rankings.

It's only 232 days until the 2020 Champions Classic ...

Which Ohio State will show up next season? The one that started 11-1 and sat near the top of the rankings? Or the one that lost six of seven to drop to 2-6 in the Big Ten -- or the one that won nine of its last 12? I think it's something more like the third option, even though there are some personnel issues entering the offseason. One of those was addressed over the weekend, when Harvard graduate transfer Seth Towns -- our No. 1 transfer -- picked the hometown Buckeyes over Duke. Towns will add perimeter shooting, while California transfer Justice Sueing brings scoring punch after sitting out last season. C.J. Walker, Duane Washington and Luther Muhammad are all back in the backcourt. What happens up front? If Kaleb Wesson turns pro, coach Chris Holtmann could be short on interior options. If Wesson returns, Ohio State will rise several spots in the rankings.

Which forwards are most likely to play "starter minutes" next season?

Jallow, Sueing, Liddell, Towns, Young, Ahrens, Key, Brown... take your pick of 3.

Some people think we are playing primarily 3-guard next season but I can't see it with our quality depth strength at forward and only 3 guards total on the roster (though that is subject to change if they take a grad transfer guard).

This is a tough call between some of the forwards. I think I am leaning Sueing, Liddell, Young but not sure if that's enough shooting/scoring (have to play Washington at SG with that group). Towns might play the vast majority of whatever minutes at 3-4 that Sueing and Liddell don't, but I don't want to discount what 4th-year Jallow could bring to the equation.

I am higher on Brown than most but kind of hard to see how he is going to get on the court now his first two seasons. Maybe we find backcourt minutes for him somehow because I would hate him to be another "we hardly knew ye" situation. I think with some refinement his combination of athleticism, length, and shooting will eventually result in a special player.

What are you doing while on Shelter-In-Place/Lockdown?

Good thing I have all on last season's game (except for the Fiesta Bowl) on DVR. Think I'll run through the season chronologically a game a day (maybe two on the Saturdays and Sundays) and repeat (along with alternating with BluRays of Star Trek I~VI movies and Bourne movie collections. Also have a 12-pack of Sapporo beer in the fridge...
