#2 Purdue at Ohio State, Sunday, February 18, 2024, 1 PM ET, CBS

SHH! IT'S A SECRET. While Chris Holtmann will not be at Ohio State vs. Purdue on Sunday, the 1998-99 Ohio State men's basketball team will. Indeed, the Buckeyes, who won [REDCATED] games and reached the [REDACTED] of the 1999 NCAA Tournament, will be honored when the Buckeyes host the Boilermakers at Value City Arena this weekend.

But shhhhhhhhh!

Don't tell the NCAA about it.

Ohio State can no longer recognize the Final Four team after the school accepted NCAA sanctions for a fallout that led to coach Jim O’Brien's termination in 2004. However, Adam Jardy of The Columbus Dispatch reported Ohio State will honor the 1998-99 team on Sunday for an achievement the NCAA cannot revoke:

As part of its season-long celebration of 25 years of the Schottenstein Center, Ohio State will officially welcome back “The USA Today Coaches Poll No. 4 Team.” It’s not a recognition of a Final Four run that helped put the program back on the national radar, or an acknowledgement of a 27-9 overall record, but it’s a way to give some due to a team went from 8-22 the year before (and 1-15 in the Big Ten) to the Final Four.
George Reese and Scoonie Penn are excited for the event:

“Every time we come into the building people still talk about that team, so why not?” Reese said. “That elephant in the room was always there, like, come on man, we remember it. You see all the stuff the NCAA does, now it’s our time to actually be recognized. The NCAA can’t take that away.”
...
“It’s nice to have something, to be recognized, but it still has a sour taste in my mouth and I’m sure the rest of the guys, coaches, everybody that was a part of what we did that special season feels like that,” Penn said. “The people who were around, they understand, they remember. But what about all these people who became Buckeyes and Buckeye fans these last 22 years that go into the Schottenstein Center and don’t see that? Hopefully those who don’t know, this will help them recognize and understand a little bit better.”
Including family members, “The USA Today Coaches Poll No. 4 Team” will have about 70 representatives on Sunday. Penn told Jardy the players and their loved ones will arrive in Columbus on Saturday, reuniting nearly the entire team for the first time since their postseason banquet in 1999. The team will also have a brunch at the arena before their in-game recognition.

I love this.

Kudos to whomever at Ohio State put this event together for the 1998-99 Buckeyes. Michael Redd, Penn, Jason Singleton, Ken Johnson and Reese are some Ohio State basketball legends and deserve praise for their contributions and performances in one of the best seasons ever for the program. I can't wait to see them receive that praise from Buckeye Nation this weekend.

Re: I love this.
Just sayin': Me too........

Buckeyes at No. 20 Wisconsin Tuesday Night

Ohio State starts a big week of games on Tuesday night as the Buckeyes head to Madison to take on No. 20 Wisconsin. That will be followed by a game with No. 2 Purdue at home on Sunday. Tip-off Tuesday is set for 9 p.m. ET and the game will be streamed exclusively on Peacock. Paul Burmeister and Robbie Hummel will call the action.
  • This will be the 174th all-time meeting and the Buckeyes officially lead the series 91-76. Wisconsin leads 48-31 in Madison, but the teams have split the last four meetings in the Kohl Center.
  • The recent series has been close. The teams have split the last 12 meetings 6-6 and over the last six meetings, the teams are tied 3-3 and the Buckeyes have outscored Wisconsin by just two combined points, 422-420.
  • Earlier this year, Wisconsin pulled-away late in a 71-60 victory in Columbus on Jan. 10. The Buckeyes used a 10-2 run to lead 56-52 with 6:19 to play, but Wisconsin closed on a 19-4 run to run away with the victory. Jamison Battle posted 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting from long range. Max Klesmit scored all of his team-high 18 points in the second half to lead the Badgers.
  • The Buckeyes snapped a five-game losing skid on Saturday with a hard-fought 79-75 double-overtime victory over Maryland. Point guards Bruce Thornton and Jahmir Young dueled down the stretch and it was Thornton who scored last, lifting the Buckeyes with a driving lay-up late in double-OT. Thornton finished with team-highs of 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Roddy Gayle Jr. added 17 points and played stellar defense on Young down the stretch.
  • The game Saturday was Ohio State’s 19th double-overtime game in program history. They have won each of the last two and are now 10-9 in those games.
  • Bruce Thornton returned to form last Saturday with 24 points in the win over Maryland. Thornton burst out of the gates this season, but his pace slowed over the last month. He got his bounce back and willed the Buckeyes to the double-OT victory, leading the team in scoring, rebounding, and plus/minus. Here’s hoping that’s a sign of good things to come down the stretch.
  • Jamison Battle went 0-for-3 from long range Saturday vs. Maryland. That was his first game this season without a three-point make. So that means he’s due for a big game from deep on Tuesday, right? Interestingly, his previous game without a three-pointer also came against Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament last season.
  • Wisconsin enters Tuesday on a skid. The Badgers have dropped four-consecutive games, three of which have come on the road. Wisconsin has used the same starting lineup in all 24 games and those five are five of the team’s six leading scorers. AJ Storr leads the way at 16.4 ppg.

OHIO STATE CAN EMBRACE NOTHING-TO-LOSE MENTALITY IN NEXT TWO GAMES AGAINST NO. 20 WISCONSIN AND NO. 2 PURDUE

145501_h.jpg

Ohio State almost has no choice but to play with nothing to lose.

What else is there to do but gain from here? The Buckeyes aren’t on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament at this juncture, slotted at 71st in the NET rankings with a combined 1-9 record in Quadrant 1 and 2 games.

Their only way back in is to win where nobody expects them to. And almost nobody outside the program expects Ohio State to beat No. 20 Wisconsin on the road on Tuesday or No. 2 Purdue at home on Sunday.

“I think the reality is that that can be a help at times,” Chris Holtmann said on Monday. “But you’re really just focused on learning from what we did in the Wisconsin game good that we can do better and maybe where there’s some things we need to tweak or change going into that (game). Then after that, tackling this Purdue team, figuring out the best way to put a gameplan in for those guys.”

Wisconsin could be a more winnable game than it appears at first glance.

The Badgers are on a four-game losing streak, plummeting from No. 6 in the AP Poll to No. 20 in just two weeks. Their two most recent losses were at Michigan and at Rutgers, the teams currently placed last and fourth to last in the Big Ten.

“I know Wisconsin’s had some bumps in the road here with playing three out of four on the road and their one home game was Purdue,” Holtmann said. “They’ll certainly be hungry, we’re hungry, and it should be a great atmosphere there.”

Ohio State hung tough with a hotter Wisconsin team in Value City Arena on Jan. 10, leading 56-52 midway through the second half before the Badgers dismantled them with a 19-4 extended run to close a 71-60 victory.

Despite those trends working in the Buckeyes’ favor, the fact remains that they have been downright abysmal on the road the past two seasons. They are one game shy of equaling the school record for longest road losing streak, having lost 15 in a row in hostile environments.

The good news for these teams is one of the teams has to win. Ohio State hasn’t been good, but with the way the Wisconsin has played as of late, I am just not sold on them finding success here. Ohio State is averaging 75.3 points and they are going to have no issue running up the score here. This Wisconsin defense has been a problem and Ohio State will find success here. Back Ohio State against the spread.

LB Joey Velazquez (Official Thread)

A former Michigan Wolverine is now an Ohio State Buckeye.

Michigan graduate Joey Velazquez – a Columbus native and DeSales High School graduate – has transferred to Ohio State, a program spokesperson confirmed to Eleven Warriors. A three-star recruit in the 2019 class, Velazquez will be a walk-on for the Buckeyes in 2024.
The 6-foot, 222-pound linebacker appeared in 16 games across five seasons with the Wolverines. His appearances came as a freshman in 2019 (one), a redshirt sophomore in 2021 (10) and a redshirt junior in 2022 (five). He did not see any action in the 2020 or 2023 seasons. Velazquez finished his Michigan career with eight tackles and one fumble recovery.
Velazquez also played baseball at Michigan. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Wolverines as an outfielder and helped advance to two NCAA Regionals in 2021 and 2022. In 100 games, Velazquez made 68 starts and hit .255 with 17 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 51 RBIs. An Ohio State spokesperson confirmed Velazquez will play only football for the Buckeyes.
On Sunday, Ohio State's linebacker room watched Super Bowl LVIII together, and graduate assistant James Laurinaitis posted a photo of the coaches and players. Velazquez can be seen in the back of the photo wearing a black Nike jacket.

Maryland at Ohio State, Saturday, February 10 @ 4 PM ET, FS1

Buckeyes Close The Week vs. Maryland Saturday Night

Ohio State completes its two-game home stand on Saturday evening by hosting Maryland in the teams’ lone meeting this season. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. and the game will be televised on FS1. Chris Vosters and Nate Bahe will call the action.
  • This will be just the 22nd all-time meeting between the two teams. Maryland leads the series 11-10 and also holds a 9-6 advantage since the Terrapins joined the Big Ten Conference prior to the 2014-15 season.
  • Last year, the teams met twice during the regular season, and each would hold serve on its home court. The Terrapins won 80-73 on Jan. 8 in College Park behind 30 points from Jahmir Young. Brice Sensabaugh led the Buckeyes with 22 points. In the meeting in Columbus on March 1, the Buckeye seniors celebrated Senior Day by combining to score 37 of the 73 points in a 73-62 victory. Justice Sueing led all Buckeye scorers with 16 points. The Buckeyes were also a program record 20-of-20 from the foul line in that win.
  • Tuesday night’s loss to Indiana was another tough setback in a string of tough games for the Buckeyes. Ohio State surrendered an 18-point lead and fell to the Hoosiers 76-73. Jamison Battle and Roddy Gayle Jr. each had 19 points in the game while Evan Mahaffey finished with eight points, a team-high six rebounds and also had two assists and two steals.
  • Despite recording his first game this season without an assist on Tuesday, Bruce Thornton continues to lead the country in assist-to-turnover ratio at 4.22. He has 97 assists and just 23 turnovers.
  • On top of leading the league in three-point shooting, Jamison Battle has also been sharp from the free throw line, having made his last 34 attempts. That is the best stretch of his career, and in fact, he attempted just 32 free throws in 29 games all of last season.
  • Roddy Gayle Jr. is right there with Battle, having made his last 30 free throw attempts. The Niagara Falls native has had his struggles shooting this season but is 22-of-44 (.500) over his last four games, while averaging 16.5 ppg.
  • Maryland enters Saturday’s game at 13-10 overall and 5-7 in the conference. Starting on January 2, the Terrapins have been on a little streak of two losses, followed by two wins, two losses, two wins and now two losses. The Buckeyes are hoping to buck that trend on Saturday. Jahmir Young leads the Terrapins and is second in the Big Ten at 20.6 ppg.

Who will win tonight's NCAA basketball game against the spread?
Tony Sink's Pick: Take Ohio State

Winners and Whiners: Prediction, Preview, and Odds

You look at the talent that Ohio State possesses and it makes no sense that they are 3-9 in the Big 10. This is a team that beat Alabama in non-conference play on a neutral site and started the season out at 13-2. There is still time to turn things around and when you look at Maryland, they are not going to get much better. If you can slow down Jahmir Young and fatigue is hampering his game since he's playing over 35 minutes in every game. When you have no bench, there's only so much you can do on the road and the Buckeyes are the better team here. If they get a big lead this time, they will hold on.
Prediction: Ohio State -2.5

High School Bowl Games

ALL-AMERICAN BOWL NOW ALLOWING JUNIORS TO PARTICIPATE

The yearly All-American Bowl traditionally reserved for the top high school seniors in the nation to showcase their talents is making a significant change starting with next year’s game.

Per the All-American Bowl, high school juniors will now be allowed to participate in the event in addition to the seniors selected for the game. The change was implemented in hopes that more juniors would announce their commitments during the live broadcast on NBC and to mitigate opt-outs of the bowl from seniors who enroll in their college of choice in December.

Indiana at Ohio State, Tuesday, February 6, 2024, 7 PM ET, Peacock

Buckeyes and Hoosier Meet for 200th Time on Tuesday

Ohio State vs. Indiana
Date:
February 6, 2024
Time: 7 p.m.
Venue: Value City Arena – Columbus, Ohio
Watch: Peacock

Ohio State is back home to host a pair of home games this week, starting with a Tuesday evening matchup against Indiana. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed exclusively on Peacock. Jac Collinsworth and Robbie Hummel will call the action.
  • This will be the 200th all-time meeting between Ohio State and Indiana. Officially, the Hoosiers lead the series 109-84 after taking into account vacated games.
  • The teams met exactly one month ago, on Jan. 6 in Bloomington, and the Hoosiers came away with a 71-65 victory. Indiana built a 10-point lead with less than four minutes to play. A three-pointer by Jamison Battle and four points from Felix Okpara helped cut the deficit to just two at 67-65 with 1:44 left. But Indiana made enough plays down the stretch to hold on. Battle led the Buckeyes with 17 points on 5-of-10 from long range.
  • Ohio State battled Iowa in a back-and-forth game but fell on the road 79-77 last Friday night. Battle led four Buckeyes in double figures with 17 points on 3-of-5 from long range. Big man Felix Okpara tied a career-high with 14 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds and two blocks. Bruce Thornton also had 14 points and five assists.
  • Thornton leads the country in assist-to-turnover ratio, dishing out 97 assists and committing just 21 turnovers. He has had at least two assists in every game and has had 18 assists and three turnovers over the last four games.
  • Okpara is one of two players in the country (with at least 15 games) to have one or more blocked shots in every game they have played. He is third in the Big Ten and 11th in the country with 52 blocked shots this season.
  • Freshman Devin Royal has come off the bench and provided a start over the past month. He has scored 35 points in roughly 52 minutes of action since Jan. 15 on 14-of-23 (.609) shooting. Royal is coming off of playing a season-high 17:21 at Iowa and finished with nine points and three rebounds.
  • Battle’s shooting 45 percent from long range, which is sixth-best in the country and tops in the Big Ten. The 6-7 forward is also the only Big Ten player on the Julius Erving Award late season watch list.
  • Indiana enters the game having lost four of its last five games, including an 85-71 loss at home to Penn State on Saturday. The Hoosiers are led in scoring by Malik Reneau at 16.0 ppg. Big man Kel’el Ware, who had a solid game against the Buckeyes in Bloomington, is averaging 15.3 points and a team-best 9.5 rebounds per game.
Just sayin': I did see that Ohio State was actually a 6 point favorite over Indiana.
